  • Why Do Parrots Bite? Lets talk about many of the reasons behind aggressive bird behavior and what your bird is trying to tell you.
In this video there are many personal examples of why my birds have bitten me. I wanted to talk about parrots biting their owners because I think it is really important to be able to decode the birds reasoning in order to prevent future bites from your bird. A bird bite could be very dangerous if lets say you have a large Macaw and a small child, so it is important to contribute in the comments your stories of bird bites and the reason why you believe you got bit. Decoding bird behavior can really be tough for new parrot owners so anything you contribute might set off a lightbulb in someones head and help them decode their bird. I believe ve this sets a better life for them and their parrot and prevents the bird from being abandoned and the owner from being stressed.

Bummed. I missed your live stream. Great topic. They bite for many reasons. Jealousy. Defensive. Scared. Excited. Sometimes they are just playing but don’t realize how painful their play is. My bird goes after my toes. So what always use shoes. When they are doing bad things I give my bird quiet time. A kind of a reset.

I'm super happy to get these vidoes again! I have a monk parakeet that we rescued from the park, he had a broken wing and leg. Rambi is the name we gave him but he insists that we call him RamBOY. All I have to say is that I was really underestimating the birds.

One of the things I love about your videos is the balance between behavioral science and allowing the birds to be birds. It’s so hard to find real life experiences from the birds point of view in one and objective reasoning in the other. It really paints a bigger picture.

Thank you for making these videos. I just got an INR 6 days ago and I was told he was mean and bit whenever someone got close or let him on your shoulder. But 5 days into it he gave me a kiss and backed up to me . I was able to kiss his back. He is such an amazing bird. He yells at me every time I leave the room mostly in the morning when I am going to get his breakfast. Or when I get home from work.

I have a Meyers parrot - female who is very determined to chew something and will attempt to bite me if I try to remove her from the situation. She also squawks a lot when it is bedtime - which doesn't change when our clocks change between British Summertine and the autumnWinter Equinox. Despite my early socialiation with my Husband which was fine until she bit in the back of the neck and the bond was destroyed never to be rebuilt. So I only allow her out in our special room and that is best so stress levels are avoided. I love that your birds all like and love both of you. Thank you for your knowledge.

Hey Marlene. I live in Belgium, Europe. We have wild green Indian ring necks all over the place.
There's a beautiful male eating at my feeder RIGHT NOW two meters from me!
I wish I could send you images somehow. They also come ON the feeders ON the window...
It's crazy. I also took some shots of a blue one who probably escaped from someone's and live his best parrot life with a beautiful wild green girlfriend...
Amazing! I see them everyday! And SOOOO many other species...
But this would never have happened if I hadn't clicked on one if your videos years ago!... Many years...
You instilled the love of bird in me. And it's become a fascination!
    Thank you ❤

Wow, that's incredible!! What a life to be able to watch them in the wild right there at your feeder!! I bet your are right, the blue one is someone's bird that found a nice green girlfriend. I have seen them wild in Greece, Portugal, Spain, Israel, and here in Los Angeles, but have never seen a wild blue one. They have such amazing survival capabilities to adapt to city life. My parents live half the time in Lanzorate, and this one place they were staying had them come to the balcony every morning. My dad loved it. He was feeding them daily, and then, like clockwork, they would come yell at him to wake up and give them nuts.
You can email me the pictures if you like...marlene@parrotstation.com. I'd love to see them.
I'm so glad you came across my channel and found a love for birds. They are really something special that I believe are a gift to experience. You are extra lucky to get to watch them in such close proximity, wild as they should be!💙

Thanks for all of your advice it really helped me. My rescued lilac we call her Indy has a lot of broken baggage. He or she came to us with a broken wing, plucking, full of poop on its feet and wings and clipped wings (it looked like the person tried to do it themselves). I have been bit many times and I had to try undersrand what Indy went through. I had to take time even if it was just next to me sitting side by side for hours trying to read her reaction. Now Indy can be picked up and sit on your shoulder.

Marlene, thanks for the mention. But I am serious… BFA are destructive. My Rio has ‘Eliminated’ an average of 12 inch off their Manzanita Tree , within a week. which as you are well aware, is Pretty HARD wood. Same tree had been with a SCC for years without as much as a single scratch or dent. But Rio disintegrated a full section of it within days.
Story … well, on the day we got my Koko (at the time 2 yr old F CAG), my Kitty (7 yr old F YNA) bit me under the eye.
Reason : she ‘Discovered’ a new breed/species of bird on the premises, COLOR unfamiliar (All Grey, NO Green, the BASIC color for her compadres, Amazons) and Koko was NOT Willing to ‘Kiss the Ring’, so to speak. So Kitty was overly excited… and well, I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. That was Sept 2021, so almost 3 years ago.
On the more recent instance, my Koko (now 5 yrs old F CAG) Pierced my Ear last weekend, because she didn’t approve of me removing the ripped cardboard pieces that she had shredded on the bottom of the cage. Not that I can put my head on the block for it, but a theory is that she had collected it to utilize in making herself a nest, and by me removing it, I am hindering her from ‘providing’ for her ‘None Existing’ babies 😉😉😉. But she’s only 5, not yet totally ‘Sexually’ mature, yet, so that’s just a postulation. And my Koko , though stubborn, is NOT aggressive … in the almost 3 years, she has bitten me (that drew blood) about 2 times.
My Batman (8yr M CAG) is probably the one that has actually drawn blood the most… all from ‘I don’t wanna go to bed’ to ‘How dare you be close to Ba Khat (my son who is also 8 and Batman’s BFF). And mind it, I can actually tell him ‘Gimme Kiss’ and he’ll reach up and ‘FRENCH Kiss’, figuratively speaking.
The ONLY of my birds who has NEVER as much as nibble on me is my Willie, (11yr M YNA). He’s a sweet pie. Well, to be honest, neither has Jesper (12yr old F OWA), but she has hissed. But that’s just her personality… the OWA is more ‘Look but don’t touch’. The same would be with my Pele (M OWA, age uncertain).
Marlene, one thing that wasn’t mentioned, but that can be a factor as to WHY the bird bite you is the environment… there is something in the surroundings that they don’t agree with… it can be a bug walking under the cage to a bald eagle flying over the mountain 20 million miles away… and or something that you may have done 160 centuries ago… the Grudge factor.
My experience is primarily with Amazons (7 of them , YNA, OWA, BFA & DYHA), and African Grey (CAGs), thou I do have 2 Sunnies and 11 Budgies as well. And to be honest, when talking about bites, the CAG is the one with the worst … cuz the grab on and just latch , won’t let go. Mind it, I don’t have any experience with the giants, Macaws and next to none with Toos. So I can’t really comment much about those species.

@@MARLENEMCCOHEN: there was a topic that would be interesting to address. ‘Loss of a Companion Bird’.
I am Not trying to rip up any old wounds, so I apologize if it causes any grief. But you have experienced BOTH Kind of Loss (Passing of George Vs Escape of Picasso). Which would you say is the hardest to encounter , and, thou we never really do, which one would be the considered easiest to get past.
Again, I apologize for any hurt it may bring up.

    • @MARLENEMCCOHEN
      @MARLENEMCCOHEN  Před 3 měsíci +1

@thomasbangash5808 Wow, that is such a good question and a very interesting topic. I've had this conversation with a few people, and i think whichever each person is going through at the time is what they perceive to be the hardest, but as someone who had both happen, George passing was extremely traumatic and I think I had a year or more of depression, but at least I knew where he was. Losing Picasso came with hope that I might find him, so that let me down easier, but all in all I would say that was much harder because there is no closure and has major guilt attached, from the moment, the day, to everything I might have done wrong to not find him in time and the idea that I could still be missing out on finding him, in listings or anything, kills me. Someone said I lost light in my eyes when I lost Picasso. I looked back on videos and agree that is true. Every day, Brando reminds me how much I miss Picasso. With her bratty attitude!! I love her, of course, but Picasso was so special. George was my life. He was such an incredible speaker, full sentences, reading flashcards, if you guys could have seen him, you would have been so stunned! I worked him him so much and hopefully in my life, I will get another chance to work with a Grey in the same way I did when it was just me and him. I had a dream i will have that one day, and I will name him Garfield.

I have a double yellow headed Amazon parrot. I'm not sure why, but my mean sister, who I don't talk to anymore. And we're old I was 60ish . She brought her home. I don't know anything about Ruby's age I know nothing! To make a long story short. Ruby adopted me. To this day, it's been 6 years. Has never taken a bite off me. She would attact my sister from the get go. My sister was very mean and would and has always hated me and has hit me. Ruby would guard me from her. If my sister would try and come in my room. Ruby would take flight and would attact her to the point I'd have to grab her off my sister's body. My sister sold Ruby to me. She is my true blue bird.

I take in rescues. I have found that two of my birds don't like bare hands. They step up great if I wear a glove. I can't imagine what might have happened to make them that way but the first Macaw I found this to be the case was a breeder bird. He stayed in a dog crate for nineteen years. 😢 I don't know what made me think of it but I thought...what if they hadn't been touched by humans ever or infrequently. I put my gloved hand up and he stepped right up. It blew my mind. When I had a similar situation happen with a Red Lord Amazon. The previous owner kept her in a cage for 40+ years. I also noticed she seems to lack balance. I get bot to the bone every time I put my hand up for her to step up. I think the glove may make her feel more comfortable. She seems to prefer the glove. If you get an older bird that may be what was used.

I purchased Angel 6, and Snowie 3 from a lady who was having personal problems, and found she could no longer give them the love they both deserved. The lady purchased Snowie at 12 months old. For some reason, she purchased Angel after having Snowie for 12 months, and cared for them both for a further 12 months.
There was no doubt they had really bonded. Angel will not let Snowie out of his sight. We had a basic history of them both, and I have managed to keep them busy and happy.
The problem I have, Snowie doesn't like going to bed. She will scream to let me know, it's her bedtime, even though Angel is in the cage waiting for her. When I try to open their cage door, to try and put Snowie in, he will do everything to try and bite me.
Snowie is a Madam, but very placid. Angel is very unpredictable, he wants cuddles, then tries to bite me. I only touch his head, even though he keeps lifting his wings. I must confess, at 60 years old, and not in the best of health, I should not have bought them. I have now been a proud owner of these two beautiful birds for 15 months, they keep me busy, and I sleep well. They are very healthy, and they have their own room, so flight isn't an issue. Thank you for your time.

The bedtime story and how they reach act, is pretty much the d between our two Cockatoo's, Thai (male) and Jersey (female). Jersey had complete fomo, she screams at bed time but doesn't want to go to sleep and Thai will go to bed so easily.

My African Grey is a bit more "devious"... while she does exhibit territorial behavior she also has this thing she will do where all is going well and she will come over to "taste" you and then continues to add pressure until you react. Almost like she is angry about something and making you aware of her dissatisfaction with some behavior or lack of attention. Hard to evaluate causes because the behavior is so random.

@@MARLENEMCCOHEN a little more on my situation... "Lucy" is almost 9 years old, she is my first parrot. I had to take her at 6 weeks old because of personal issues with the breeder/seller. It was a learning experience... feeding every couple of hours until she got old enough to start eating on her own. She and I were bonded from this but the last few years I have had to work overseas and she stays with my mother. She and my mother get along well BUT she tends to be a bit aggressive with her from time to time (hormonal, territorial... ) In my case I am suspicious that she is punishing me for being away so much.
