ACACIA PARK HISTORY:
In the late 1910s the Masonic Fraternity of Chicagoland decided to develop cemeteries that would be limited to Masons, members of the Eastern Star and their families. Street Lightfoot was hired to accomplish this because of his cemetery expertise and background in Masonry. Lightfoot developed the Acacia Park Cemetery on Chicago's north side, and the Cedar Park Cemetery on Chicago's far south side for the Masons.
The newspaper of the day trumpeted the news. The announcement came in the January 18, 1925 edition of the Chicago Daily Tribune:
WORLD'S FINEST MAUSOLEUM FOR CHICAGO MASONS
$800,000 Structure to Be in Acacia Cemetery.
Chicago is to have one of the most magnificent mausoleums in the world - a solid marble, concrete and bronze structure - dedicated to Masons and their families. The $800,000 Acacia mausoleum was designed by R.G. Schmidt & Co., of Chicago, who were the architects of Medinah Temple, Medinah Country Club, and other Masonic temples throughout the country.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named âThe Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

My grandmother always said donât fear the dead. Itâs the living you need to worry about. I always feel at peace when visiting cemeteries.
My mother used to say âthe dead canât hurt you, so donât be afraidâ.
So true. The dead is at peace. Evil is still Roaming.
Oh absolutely. I feel so at peace visiting my family plot in the cemetery.
My grandmother used too always say, don't fear the dead...their dead! Now get back to your choirs!
Your Grandmother was right. I feel very peaceful at cemetaries as well.
That upstairs room with the layout you were wondering about. It was set up exactly like a Masonic lodge room. There were chairs for the worshipful master and the senior and junior wardens etc. kind of a celestrial lodge.
I've always regarded a mausoleum as a filing cabinet for the dead
@Lola Briggada Another good comparison!
LoL đ
Haha...Good one Mr Orville
waste of money. and cemeteries, its peaceful walking thru them, but don't get me started, return nutrients to the soil not contaminate it. stop embalming
With each of your vids, I am reminded as to how short are our lives & how long is eternity.
And.... how soon we ARE forgotten.
My daughter is not have children and when I'm gone, I'll be forgotten within one generation.
@Ann. I too am the last of my family. I have a sister, but we only share our mother.
Yes, me too. We place such energy to achieving material goals in our short lives only to realize how meaningless they actually are when we are in our graves for eternality. True joy and happiness to savor is more important than wasting time chasing things that give us pain and lose precious time for enjoying life.
Forgotten only here. Never forgotten in Jesus and there with fellow believers
If you are trusting Jesus as your Savior, it doesn't matter what happens down here. To die is to be present with Him and you be be rejoicing for eternity... I don't have children and I could care less if I'm remembered down here.. eternity with Jesus is all that matters...
This absolutely made up my mind not to be placed in a storage facility for the dead nor put in the ground. I want to travel wherever the wind takes me. I've never felt such utter loneliness and despair until you walked the mausoleum and columbarium.
My brother wanted to go in the wind...so my son went up in an airplane and spread his ashes from the window. So cool. Have a photo of that and it made me feel soooo good.
Yup. These places are morbid. Let me fly like an Eagle!
I agree..so cold and lonely..
Put me in one of these so i can rest peacefully
@@jcgjcg3844 I live in a place where 95% of the dead is cremated there is no option for me at all. O would like to be able to go to rest in a little mausoleum on a hilly site but I know it is impossible. Hopefully I go to The Lord in the rapture in my life time. I pray
TM- I have always loved old cemeteries. Even used to take my kids with me. Brought sandwiches and cold drinks. I'm a old granny now and still love the peace and history that I find in our TX cemeteries!
Yes, the compass and square is the sign of Free Masonry. The star on the ladies is for the Order of the Eastern Star. The Star and Sword is for the Shriners. Free Masonry does conduct a ceremony when one of their members pass.
I've always regarded the Freemasons as a Gypsy Union LOL hidden in plain sight and Amazingly beautiful with such gorgeous architectural decadence for the spirits of their proud past...
Wow! Thank you.
I once was at a parade and the Shriners were in costume waving scimitars. Of course the tiny cars were there too. People were clapping when I heard a voice behind me say, âThe Shriners are great, but itâs the Masons you canât trust!â Once again, a know-it-all who has no idea about Masonry is but thinks they do. Iâve had several friends who were the same way and later became Freemasons and told me that they were so wrong about what they had thought.
All I know is that when my time comes, Iâll be seeing 1/3 of our Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Edison, Paul Revere, Ben Franklin, Mozart, SimĂłn BolĂvar, Mark Twain, Churchill, Hoover, John Elway, John Wayne, and thousands of more. Even all seven of the Ringling brothers. I think Iâll be in pretty good company.
They conduct a ceremony IF the deceased brother or his family requests it.
Ron the look on your face is priceless when you heard those footsteps! You sure got out of there quick!
Maybe Ghosts were making those noises ........... creep- O

I would be worried about getting lost and couldn't find my way out.... The front door closing and spending the night in there.... đł
That's what I was thinking. Something similar happened to me and a friend at the Lexington Cemetery in Kentucky. We weren't aware of the closing time, and got locked in car and all. Not quite the same as getting locked in a mausoleum but somewhat unsettling just the same.
If that happens to me I would probably get an anxiety attack and passed out maybe it looks really creepy in there đł
Iâm gonna have nightmares tonight. That ritual room is the creepiest thing of all. I was waiting for the lights to start swinging. Youâre a brave man.

I'm not one who feels cemeteries are haunted, I don't feel creepy in them and I never feel that kind of energy. I guess the way I see it, if I was/got to be a ghost I wouldn't lurk around my old body... I would be Haunting something more fun, like family membersđ»đ
It's possible if there is something like that, human spirits could be going back and forth between family and their grave/urn/marker. Who says you would have to stick to one location. Most of us don't know how it would all work though. If there are spirits, with that many graves, with thousands of graves, you'd think the odds would be high of some being around there at some point in time.
Lol ancestorstalker!
@@corallewis3788 đ I do a lot of genealogy work for myself and others, which led to the name that is absolutely true. Genealogy also leads you straight to cemeteries and forming a fascination with them. â€

It's rare to a sprit stay with their body,I've seen to sprit and neither were at a graveyard.
Creepy indeed! It was like watching a horror movie waiting for a demon to jump out! I found it curious that a lot of Mason's buried there! It's possible the Masonic lodge paid for the stained glass. That is their symbol! I've investigated a lot of haunted houses and have never been as scared as watching this! The chapel area upstairs looks similar in layout to a masonic lodge. Great video Ron!
This place is long overdo for a good cleaning! It would seem the Masons have a large hand in this mosoluem. Good explore.
They need to give it a good spring clean, they already have the aprons!
Very beautiful old Masoleum/Cemetary, & super interesting crematorium! Thanks for bringing us along!
The one thing I have never understood about storing bodies in Masoleums is; families tend to forget the generations that go beyond their Great Grandparents. Generally, once these buildings reach 100 yrs old or more, nobody is alive anymore that once owned them, AND, nobody wants to buy these ancient, moldy body-filled crumbling structures. They are usually very old and in need of repair, generally with very little room "left" to inter any new bodies within their walls. If you search long enough on CZcams, you'll run across videos of completely abandoned and semi abandoned mausoleums, all because everyone that owned them died, (among other reasons).đ
The architecture of the Mausoleum is amazing. I'd say nearly impossible to do today. I think it would be cost prohibitive.
Very few Masons in the US that could do that kind of work, you'd have to bring in European Masons.
Talking of butt prints. I once attended a meeting at the local council in the councillorsâ committee room. There werenât enough chairs so I sat on the old and highly waxed, committee table at the back of the room. Meeting over, I got up to leave when I noticed that the wax had melted leaving a detailed imprint in the shape of my backside!
Needless to say, I was the last to leave the room - I met the caretaker on his way in! Bet he still wonders to this day, who the culprit was.

I use to work part time for a friend who did cleaning of Funeral Homes and I would clean the Funeral Home and Mausoleum at the contract he had which was about 3 miles from my house. Use to start at midnight and leave about 4:00 a.m. twice a week. And, yes, they had open coffins almost all the time. the conversations were a little one sided. As for the Mausoleum, it was a bit spooky. Always thought of that show Phantazam bc the coffin placements are high above you. I always got that building done very quickly, as it was poorly lit, especially at night. That Chapel looks like a Masonic "gathering" place and is generally off limits to non Masons.

When you asked the man that you saw about midway through, if anyone goes there, I wasn't surprised that he said hardly ever. The dates of so many of the crypts just goes to show that so many decedants are forgotten. The grandiose crypts are for the families/friends. Hopefully the decedants knew that their "treasures were laid up in Heaven."
The thought crossed my mind- that man he spoke with, was he ALIVE?
Yes, the compass and square are the signs of Free Masonry and ''G'' means God. In masonry usually God is called ''The Great Architect of the Universe''. I've just discovered this amazing channel. It is an amazing one. Greetings from East Europe, Romania.
I don't think I've ever seen another living person in these places you explore. It definitely adds to the mournful, reflective atmosphere of your videos. Great job, as always!
What a magnificent structure. 800,000.00 in 1925, imagine the cost today and the amount of time to build, thanks for the great tour.
All that marble at today's prices.... millions
Strange as it sounds that black and red tile floor is what we had in our Chicago apartment ,in the kitchen, that was built in the 1910s! Great tour, beautiful architecture, but looks so sad some how.đč
Very spooky; you are a VERY BRAVE man!! Bless your heart for taking us along.Thank you, I always enjoy your videos. You are so awesome!!! Take care, please stay safe, God bless you!
when you're dealing with Freemasons when you see a black and white tile floor or anywhere else it is emblematic of Freemasonry and has to do with the good and bad in life as you step on the white and black tile.
Once a Mason has become a Master he has the option to join other orders within the fraternity. Some of those orders are Knights Templar, Cryptic Rite, Shriners, Eastern Star (female order), Royal Arch, etc. Many Masters usually don't join these other orders btw. If one was initiated within a blue lodge, they can then join a York or Scottish Rite lodge; however, some are directly initiated within those lodges too.
The symbol upon one of the stain glass windows of the cross and crown is known as crown and gown. It's associated with York Rite and Knights Templar. So basically the symbols upon the stain glass was showing the observer which order the Mason interred there belonged too, The part of the mausoleum that Ron pointed out, with the positioning of the benches and chairs, was an actual Masonic lodge. The placement of the setting is for the different offices held within the lodge. In order to hold an office within the lodge one must become a Master first, aka completed their first 3 degrees of initiation. In order to open a lodge, begin a meeting, all officers must be present. If not, the lodge cannot be open. If an officer cannot be present, one who has held their elected office can replace them for the opening and closing of the lodge. This may have been a lodge to perform Masonic funerals, obviously. I'm also surprised to see that some of their wives were interred in this mausoleum. Usually the Masonic burial plots I have seen are that of members only. I'm not referring to a personal plots where a Mason is buried btw, but Masonic plots with multiple members interred within them. The Masonry is anal about stuff like that. I guess it depends on the country one resides, etc. Btw wonderful find, Ron.
I'm a Mason btw, have also held some offices within the lodge, and I can assure everyone who may think negatively about them that it's just a fraternity. As for me, I will soon be quitting this fraternity because I no longer believe that they serve their mission. In my opinion Masonry is irrelevant in this day and age. Many of the members are good people, no doubt, but it's not the gentlemen's club that it use to be. And I also do believe that there are lodges which are still functioning in the best interests of the communities in which they are located; however, that cannot be said for all of them!!! It's a dying fraternity. Many lodges are being sold off due to a lack of membership. Nowadays they just take young men for the sake of keeping the fraternity alive and to collect membership fees, aka to help pay the bills. So as one can imagine it's not drawing the best of the best within it anymore. Now mind you, it also depends on the country in which one dwells. I do believe that in the USA it's still well established. If any of my Masonic brethren out there read this don't take what I said as an insult. If the fraternity provides some meaning to you then Godspeed. To each their own.
When the camera turned around, that scared the mess out of me. You are brave to go all over this place. It would be too spooky for me. Great video.
Hi Ron, great video! Yes the symbolism is for the masons and the G stands for God. The seats at the front would be for the Grand Master, I know a little as my father was a mason. It isn't cultish as people think, not any more than the Shriners. Thank you for the video, stay safe!! Sorry I forgot to point out, the Star will only be on Womens tombs, known as the Eastern Star, female version of the masons.
Very interesting. I wonder, did your father tell you anymore about the Mason's?
If its the "female version" as so many r saying, why was my Father Worthy Patron in Eastern Star???
Stands for geometry I was told. And the higher degrees know much more.
@@ghostcityshelton9378 Wow very interesting. I never knew anything about the Masons. I have heard of them and always wondered about them.
I think they get the reputation of being a cult because they don't allow people to know what they do or believe. As a Lutheran we were never allowed to be Mason's due to this fact. I don't think there are as many Mason's around today but it is every bit as secretive.
The white walls reminds me of the Mausoleum in the 70's classic called PHANTASM. Waited for the tall man to come around the corner. Spooky place, Oh, and a darn good movie too.

This was amazing! Architecture was phenomenal! Each crypt so beautifully built. One could say itâs Heavenly! I must say this tour was suspenseful, to say the least. Iâm wondering when this was built? The one crypt showed someone was born in 1850 and died in early 1900âs. How did you feel wondering in those halls not knowing what might be for you around the next corner? The Masonic Lodge is very secretive, symbalistic, ritualistic and mysterious. My Grandfather was a Mason in a very small community. They moved into another community nearby, and after attending one meeting, he refused to be involved. Years later, just after his death, the members spent time with his body before the family did. The first thing they ask my Grandmother was " Where is the ring?" The funeral upset my father with the staffs, white apron and gloves and they carried the casket. I'm not trying to judge, it just seemed that they took over as the family stood confused. There was a lack of compassion for our family. Please forgive if I've insulted anyone. My intentions are not to hurt anyone. JFK said many times that secrets were never a good thing...I agree, as full disclosure/explanations, may not have hurt my family as much. â„ïž As for the butt print, it couldn't have been more perfect if a naked butt had made it...lol

I have never seen a columbarium quite like this one. It reminds me of a library. In Britain they have those curtains and at the end of the service, the casket goes via conveyer belt to the crematorium private area.
Seems today they cremate before the service. I am so sadden I can't pay my respects to the person. I don't like cremation and would like to see someone in death. I is closure for me.
"I'm out." Brought a smile to my face.. Love it. One of your best so far.
The mausoleum was very spooky, the footsteps. scary!
Usually the coffin would come through curtains after a service and then cremated. I doubt people would wait as an average cremation takes an hour and half and then cooling time before you can cremulate the ashes. Funeral director here

Hopefully the Lodge that might own this mausoleum has set up a perpetual fund. The lack of maintenance and that so many lights are not on doesnât bode well for this place. @@rubysmith8818 , thank you.
You find the coolest places. Those are the retorts (the actual furnace where the cremation takes place.) Those burners were likely oil and the peep holes were to make sure the burners were actually working and to check to see if any more time was needed for the cremation process, in case the person was large, or the casket was burning evenly. The curtain was so family didn't have to sit during a service and think about the cremation and the retorts and what was about to happen and concentrate more on the service.
It was interesting the way you put about all the lives, the dreams or heartache, the good times and things that may of happened in each one of those people's lives.
The Mason mausoleum was a real treat. The marble and architecture is so cool. Too bad the ceiling is starting to go. It's usually a sigh of the beginning of the end. Hope they fix it. Thank you.
I found this very interesting and just kept thinking as you were exploring that you are quite a brave person.
When you drop the đŠ.I almost jumped out my skin.wow what a good episode
There's a saying my mum always says to me!!!! Be careful of the living not the dead!!!! She's rightđ©đŹđ§đŹđ§đŹđ§đŹđ§đŹđ§
I was glued to my screen realizing my hand was up to my mouth in suspense. The building architecture was awesome and the suspense of what was around the corner, nerve racking. :0
All your videos are great but this is definitely the best! I was on the edge of my seat just waiting for someone to jump out at you! Such a beautiful place. So many forgotten. Thanks for sharing!
"There's a butt print" LOL that's exactly what I said.
Did anyone else notice in the room with the marble chair with the masons sign above it, that there was no dust on anything? No but prints in that room!
Several. It had at least 2 per bench

Good day everyone!
Definitely in the top 5 of favorite videos you have filmed if not my number one fav. Amazing marble work. Will have to make a point of visiting.
well you will then like my stained glass mausoleum episode next week. stay tuned.
This is one of my favorites! Very intriguing! Did startle me when you flipped the camera around! Also when you heard the footsteps coming twords you! Well done!
Thank you sir ! I absolutely enjoyed this journey. Up the stairs, peaking into cracks and beautiful marble etches inside the deafening silences of those of the no longer that speaks volumes. How much do you want to bet me that the janitors room you didn't go in was most probably more beautiful than my whole flat. The pink marble was a treat to even loom. I could go on and on, so much hidden history of the "transformed " libraried exquisitely winning honourable mention. I can hardly wait for our next adventure ! Thank you so much for sharing this with us brother.

You scared the crap out of me when you turned the camera around. Those symbols and their history have always intrigued me. I can only imagine how cool it would be to know all that.
This place is fascinating
Thankyou for taking us along on your journeys. I love that you tell true stories along with the detail and locations. Also for letting the deceased person's stories be told.
Ron, I thought my heart â„ïž almost gave up on me. That was funny when you heard footsteps and you looked spooked and then you said âguys Iâm outta here, see you in the next one.â Ron I was laughing so hard I thought I was going to pee in my pants. đ Sorry Iâm just being honest. Thank you đđœ for the video and the laughter. I needed that Ron. Be safe!
We await our entrance through the gate.........
I don't mind waiting just a bit longer.
@@TippyPuddles The live show is over. No waiting! :)
That mausoleum is very spooky! I couldnât go in there alone! The echoes and the silence together -
Eerie!
Ron, this is absolutely one of my fav. vids that you have done. What an extraordinary and beautiful mausoleum. Yes, the "G" is a symbol for the "Free Masons". I am not a scary person at all & will go to any cemetery or graveyard, by myself...my friends think I'm crazy. But I have to say, there is no way in h*ll I could go into this place alone. As beautiful as it is, it is equally creepy & unsettling. You are a very brave man. Thanks so much for going, so I don't have to, lol. Safe Travels, My Friend!
What a beautiful mausoleum. The Freemasons are so secretive about their lives and rituals. Is so interesting to see this portion.
YAY! Story Time with Ron
Mason's symbol, what a great adventure, so interesting, hope you didn't get into trouble.
This is one of the loneliest looking mausoleums I've ever seen. So cold. So eerie.
