  • I have a bunch of scrap soft maple and walnut from previous projects that were perfect for making small keepsake boxes. I made a variety of them and filmed making this variation. I love the simplicity of this box, the size, the slight elevation provided by the bottom panel, and the thin lid. Overall, I'm pleased with how they turned out!

    Thanks for watching! I've been having fun making a variety of these types of small boxes. They're pretty quick to make which I like and make great gifts, which is always nice this time of year! Finally, someone who doesn't need $thousands of power tools to make a small box. This is the only way to encourage newcomers to the craft.

    I enjoyed this video very much. It's so good to see someone doing it all with hand tools. I have a suggestion for this box. I would chamfer the edges of the top. Also I may add a tiny handle made of a small piece of the same wood. I think this would add extra appeal and value to the item. Thanks for sharing. Good stuff.

      Thanks Greg! It has been fun to learn the hand tool approach! Thanks for the suggestion too. May have to make another one using your suggestions.

    I want to get started with hand tool only woodworking but it looks so intimidating. Seems like you need so many different kinds of tools

    • @DaughtersWoodCo
      @DaughtersWoodCo  Před rokem

      It can for sure be very intimidating! And there are many tools you can get but I do think it is possible to get started with a somewhat limited tool set. It still may feel like a lot at first, but I think totally possible!
      Here are the minimal tools I think you'd need to get started. A #5 hand plane, a ryoba pull saw (which has rip and cross-cut teeth so it's a two in one saw which is nice), a chisel set (1 in, 3/4in, 1/2in, and 1/4in) or you could just get a 1/4 in and 1/2 in to start. A combination square and a cheap hobbyist woodworkers vise (there are ones on Amazon for around 20 dollars which will get the job done). A set of diamond sharpening stones (there are thin ones Paul Sellers has recommended that appear to work well and are relatively cheap). And lastly some sort of work surface that can be as simple as a piece of 3/4 in mdf set on a simple 2x4 base (that's what you can see I have in this video).
      I know that's 6 or 7 different items, which can feel maybe still feel like a lot, but some of those things you may already have. And once you have that I would suggest watching tutorials for how to make a simple box and then just start trying to build stuff!
      Hope that's maybe helpful and if you have any questions please feel free to ask!

      That is a great compliment to be compared to him! Although I don't know if I have his talent for tool building...I do have a spare iron blade that I've been trying to figure out what I might do with. Been looking to Stavros for some inspiration.

      @DaughtersWoodCo  Před 3 lety

      Thanks! And yeah, I cut it on my chisel. You'll notice I have my chisels hanging down with the edge open and one day I had my phone underneath them, I went to check the time and when I brought my hand back my finger caught the edge of the chisel. It hurt pretty good.

    not afraid that the glued bottom can break the structure when the humidity changes?

    • @DaughtersWoodCo
      @DaughtersWoodCo  Před rokem

      I thought about that, but I think the width is small enough that the wood movement is pretty negligible.

    Can i ask what on earth happened to your finger nail?

    • @DaughtersWoodCo
      @DaughtersWoodCo  Před rokem

      So you see how I have my chisels hanging right above the bench? One day I had my phone sitting right below them and went to check the time. I pressed the home button and then quickly brought my finger back and caught the corner of one of the chisels. It sliced right through and as you could imagine hurt pretty bad. I now have some blood stains on the garage floor as a nice memory of the experience! I guess the lesson is if you have any exposed chisels hanging somewhere to either be really careful or maybe think about covering up the sharp bits.
