    Dr David, I had a knee replacement 4 months ago. My recovery has been hampered by a tight IT band and is still very painful, although my surgeon is pleased with my progress and says the new knee is functioning as it ought. My PT is a little baffled but is trying everything she can think of to get this IT to loosen up. I'd appreciate your thoughts about this.

I did a little herbal oil gentle massage on the outside of the knee where i had pain and stiffness. By God's grace this injury seems to have repaired itself as this problem is 90% resolved.

  • @miriamroche671
    @miriamroche671 Před 2 lety

    Hey Dr D what causes the joint to stiffen so much when you have arthritis and torn meniscus - which I have in both knees. When the cartilage thins or tears does that prevent the joint from moving as freely as it would normally ? Or is it to do with the synovial fluid - or both ?

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  Před 2 lety +2

      Great question Miriam! Yes thinning of the cartilage/meniscus leads to stiffness. It's also that there's usually too much compression in the joint from muscle imbalances (quads too strong) and this leads to the knee cartilage getting dehydrated. Knee cartilage is ~70% water and when it gets chronically smashed, it loses water and loses it's slickness. This means there will be more friction in the joint. The good news about this is that if you can re-hydrate the cartilage by taking pressure off the joint, then you can un-stiffen your knee! The exception would be if you have lost too much cartilage and there are too many bony changes in your joint...then stiffness may only mildly improve.

    Thank you so much for this video. I found your video after going to my family doctor and getting x-rays. I wanted to know what was going on with my right knee. Your videos are very informative and educational. My family doctor advised me to take 2 Aleve a day and if that didn't work he would recommend knee injections. I don't agree with this treatment. I have a ruptured disk in my neck so I go to a chiropractor who has helped me with my knee pain and swelling. I will be looking for a good physical therapist in my area. Hi Muqaddas, there are various reasons why you could be experiencing outer knee pain. We would need to conduct a proper evaluation to be able to determine what the cause in.
      Generally, you could be experiencing a tibial shift which cause pain on the inside or the outside of the knee. It could also be a tight Tensor Fascia Latae muscle that could be pulling on the IT Band causing pain.
      We have an IT Band playlist that could be beneficial to your situation. You can access it here:

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  Před 2 lety

      Hey DeLila! Sorry to hear that you've got a knee problem without a diagnosis. This happens all too often sadly, most healthcare professionals don't really know what to do to solve knee problems for the long term. They likely couldn't see anything dramatic on your x-ray so they didn't convey much certainty to you. You might not get very far with that orthopedic. If they can't figure it out, then they like to do more tests and usually end up wanting to do a surgery. Your best bet is to educate yourself about knee problems so you can make the best decision about how to handle it.

    • @miriamroche671
      @miriamroche671 Před 2 lety

      Hi DeLila. I had similar results where xrays showed up nothing but I was still diagnosed with arthritis and given injections into both knees and shoulders - which helped for one week. I was in so much pain 6 months later, with no help offered, I insisted on an MRI which showed torn meniscus in both knees. Now my doc wants me to see an orthopedic but I said no I'm sticking with Dr Davids 28 day knee program which helped me immediately. You can get a refund in the first 7 days. But trust me you won't want it cause it's worth every penny. Good luck ☘
