    Edit: Additional note and disclaimer, someone told me about the situation with Bad End Theater - And while that's a murky situation, note my praise is only for the game and not the creator - I'm someone who can separate the art from the artist, and the development of this video was BEFORE any of this happened. I won't get into details, but don't assume that EVERYONE knows about the situation, because not everyone looks into drama on everything. In addition, I made a mistake, Steph does not betray you despite your choices... Which if you ask me just seems rather stupid since the game takes away more options.

    What if Gabe's death was handled differently? She's an empath, that's the whole point. What if Gabe was stabbed with debris or something, dying on the ground and going through all these emotions from anger stemming from his own recklessness to grief and fear. It would seem from the side that he would try and comfort her and stay calm until his last breath, but... Alex would see what he would really feel. How scared he was, how he didn't want to leave her. Just violet fear and then it would only leave his body, when he would collapse - dead.
    Why didn't they utilize her power and used this opportunity to make the loss hit harder?

    So, on the “spoiler” that Gabe dies, I don’t really consider it a spoiler. It’s a framing device-Gabe’s death is what the game mystery is going to be about (or rather, that’s intended as such). Lots of stories do this-a loved one is lost and the main character needs to grapple with the loss and do something in relation to the loss.
    The problem, to me, is the execution. If knowing a spoiler “ruins” the story for someone, then it’s a bad reveal or poorly executed. Bonding with Gabe is intended to make the loss of him hurt, even if you know it’s coming. This is a good idea, especially if the player is supposed to be as invested in finding out who is responsible for his death. However, the first chapter of TC doesn’t really have Gabe and Alex reconnecting that much-we don’t know much about their history until a lore dump in Chapter 5, and it doesn’t have much weight beyond “oh, he seems like a nice big brother.” Alex spends more time wandering the town and then they go on a hunt for an idiot kid (who had fallen in a spot where the landslide wouldn’t have affected him, apparently). Also, Gabe dying like Goofy in KHII ruins so much of the emotional weight. Why not have the rock slide sweep the ground out and Gabe cuts the rope so Alex doesn’t die too (instead of Ryan needing to do it)? Yeah it’s a worn trope, but it still works for dramatic connection between Alex and Gabe seconds before he dies. Or maybe a fallen tree kills Gabe in the commotion, so the characters have to deal with his corpse? A bouncing boulder that knocks him off-screen definitely worsened the impact of shock and sorrow in that moment.
    Knowing Gabe dies in the trailer didn’t have to be a weakness if DeckNine worked at making the death actually feel upsetting. Barely knowing a guy before he gets Goofy-ed off a cliff wasn’t it.

      Maybe if they put the dream sequence stuff first, to show how Alex's relationship to her brother is so tightly wound and how important it is to her. That would have helped a hell of a lot

    • @Rikrobat
      @Rikrobat Před 2 lety +23

      @@Zynet_Eseled - At least some of it, yes. Having Alex’s past sprinkled through all chapters would have been much better than a “lore dump” in the eleventh hour. We didn’t need all of the details between her and Gabe off the rip, but we definitely needed more to emphasize that they’ve been separated for a long time, dealing with emotional baggage, and they didn’t have that chance to reconnect because he was senselessly killed right after they meet again.
      Even having them have a longer conversation on the rooftops before the “Ethan distraction” happened would have been so helpful. We started seeing that Gabe doesn’t know how to connect with Alex because of her troubled history with violence, and the Mac outburst was a lot to take in. But there isn’t enough time to let the characters breathe. Giving them a hallucinatory therapy session later isn’t going to emotionally connect the player with their struggles; it might work for some people, but it definitely fails on a general scale.

    • @Zynet_Eseled
      @Zynet_Eseled Před 2 lety +3

      @@Rikrobat interlacing it through episode prologue, and maybe carrying some form of angel or devil idea for the binary Choices, perhaps represented by colors, could work. But those colors would only appear through connecting with the characters, to get a clearer understanding of how these actions are likely to affect them.
      Either way, I'd say that the game should have had a prologue with the lore dump stuff, interlaced with the information about the therapist conversation. Would better demonstrate the connection.

    The fact games all about choices have no bad endings really pisses me off. Let the player make mistakes. Let the player fail. If you're searching for evidence for a crime, force the player to actually consider how they go about it, because if they go around asking literally everyone in town, you're GOING to tip off the people involved and they're GOING to get rid of any evidence. Have that be a failure state, that they actually cover their tracks because you were too obvious.
    Something as simple as that, and you can do MUCH more with it too. It's such a waste of potential.

    The problem with Mac’s confession is even if she got it on tape? It’s hearsay. It wouldn’t be admissible anyway. The company would just say “NUH UH, we totally didn’t get a call like that, it’s your word against ours”. Without an a recording of the call there’s no way to back his claim up. It mostly just exists here to put us on the right track. And also to show that he’s not just some cardboard villain who let people die, even if he didn’t like our brother.
    But there IS physical evidence on that flash drive later. That’s something the cops can use. That, COMBINED with witness testimony from Mac and others who can argue “Yeah we saw Gabe call and tell them to stop the explosion “, would be enough in court. “Sure, you could choose a different door, but it’ll just lead you back in the same hallway.”
    Honestly, this’s the very same thing The Stanley Parable made fun of, where whenever you go against the arbitrary path the game has you forced on, it just reverts you back to it to show how little “player choice” actually matters in most if not all videogames. And for a narrative-focused, choice-driven adventure series like Life is Strange, having your choices not matter is definitely a large mark against the game itself. As much as I enjoyed the OG Life is Strange, faults and all, my main issue with the future games is that they seemed to just repeat the same formula instead of actually improving upon it. The same awkward, stilted dialogue, bland characters with little to no development, plot contrivances and/or plotholes and messages that are either hypocritical or are so unsubtle that they might as well be branded in neon lights.
    True Colors seems to combine all these mistakes in a game that should’ve been by all means great due to ditching the episodic structure of the previous game to just have one single, focused narrative…but for some reason sadly didn’t. I guess that’s what happens when your game gets a bunch of awards and praise, since at that point, what incentive would you need to actually improve?
    So tl;dr, even as someone who likes the OG Life is Strange, the reason the sequels never landed for me is sadly due to repeating its flaws while never really improving on it in remarkable ways.

    Yeah, Kamen's right about spoiling Gabe's death. If you're going to do that in the trailer, you need to either make Gabe die in a dramatic way really early in the story or make Gabe so compelling that his presence is felt throughout the entire game, even after he does since his death is supposed to play a major role. I know they went for the second one, but these writers need a lot more time on their stories.
    Regardless of if you've seen the trailer, selling story-driven media is about hype and intrigue. If you fail to deliver either, it'll negatively affect sales and perception about the game.

    I have a feeling that a bunch of people are going to force feed you that cash in a couple months, but yeah, Life is Strange constantly has its head up its ass. It feels like it wants to have your choices matter and yet wants to tell a linear story at the same time. Except that's a line that's pretty much impossible to walk without falling one way or the other. Even Deltarune, try as it may, shows some indications of leaning towards your choices actually mattering in the Snowgrave route. Granted, the ending is still the same, but there are still little things that could possibly build up over time. If there is a Life is Strange 4, they need to finally make the decision to either tell a linear story like any other game or have your choices change anything like in Dying Light 2, Undertale, and The Stanley Parable.

    • @Birthday888
      @Birthday888 Před 2 lety +8

      I mean, we don't even know what "your choices don't matter" means in the context of Deltarune yet. For example, Flowey starts off Undertale by saying that it's "kill or be killed" but the entire premise of Undertale revolves around how that isn't true.
      There are also other theories that the "Your" in that sentence isn't referring to the player, but is instead referring to Kris and that it's talking about how the Player is essentially overriding Kris' free will in order to play the game. Kris can't influence anything, only the player can.

    • @tonysonic456
      @tonysonic456 Před 2 lety +12

      @@Birthday888 True, but the “your” could also apply to the player since we can’t change how the first two chapters end no matter what we do. While yes, Undertale did have that message, it worked because Undertale was a game about choices affecting everything. Flowey was simply encouraging you to be like him. Deltarune however is a lot more strict with its premise. You’re outright told that your choices are meaningless and even see how meaningless they are every step of the way. At least in chapter 1. Chapter 2 does sort of lean towards your choices mattering.

    Honestly the devs of life is strange should consider playing a Japanese visual novel since those are basically what their games are, minus the bad endings. And their games can benefit from said bad endings. Either way to me the biggest issue with these Life is Strange games are the characters. Whoever has been in charge of writing them needs to replaced. Dialogue is terrible and the characters (who are suppose to be good) end up being insufferable. In the last game, if I had the option of letting the blue haired girl die. I would take it without hesitation.

    @alexblake5369 Před rokem +11

    Good review, I just wanted to make some quick points.
    1. The biggest thing I wanted to point out is at times Alex's powers feel more like just straight-up mind reading than being an empath. For starters, it's already VERY unusual to have her be able to read thoughts, most empaths in other fiction can only tell emotion (auras) and not read minds. The writers try to place a limit on this by saying she can only do it when people feel a strong emotion but "strong" emotion is completely subjective and by just walking around town very common everyday worries like for ones job, future, crushes etc. are strong enough to let Alex mind read them so it clearly doesn't take much. This makes it even more stupid that Alex couldn't read Jed and realized he was involved. Also as you pointed out in the lore we're constantly told that Alex has a hard time maintaining control of herself in the presence of strong emotions but after the Mac encounter, this is completely dropped and forgotten. And don't get me started on her ability to read emotions on objects; given how random some of these flashback emotion scenes are this entire town should be literal in item emotions that Alex can read. It's clearly just a plot device to flesh out character motives and give Alex information in lazy fashion.
    2. Okay so this is actually a correction to your point above which I don't blame you for considering the choices you made. So Gabe being killed is Ethan's fault, I mean not just his but he is one of the people responsible for it. If you tell Gabe early it's revealed that Ethan has been warned and even punished for playing in the mines before but still does it anyway; not to mention the blasts and warnings were posted all over town so it's a little weird that Ethan does this, to begin with, but I guess kids will be stupid. So with that in mind, it's understandable that Char would blame Ethan, and she even states she feels guilty for this and feels like a bad mother for it.
    Likewise, her blaming everyone (including Alex) is a normal part of the grieving process. Alex taking away emotions is supposed to be the wrong choice here, since without anger a person spirals into a numb empty feeling. That's why Char votes against Alex since she was the last person whom she talked with before feeling this empty and dead inside. But you would be forgiven for not knowing this since other than a throwaway line by Alex before the choice the game never properly tells the player what their choice means. Also for some reason when you take away Pike's fear it gets him to vote for you which is a good thing; the only justification fans can come up for this is that taking away Pike's fear is a good thing for Alex in that moment but in the long term it's probably going to be bad for Pike since fear is important.
    3. To give the game it's due while as a mystery the game utterly fails, as a game about dealing with grief and moving past it I think it sometimes nails it. It feels realistic to have people projecting their guilt with anger, feeling anger at everyone, shutting down, sadness etc.

    • @munchkette
      @munchkette Před 11 měsíci

      I didn't like that it essentially forced you into taking away Pike's fear, I didn't want to sign the affidavit but I also didn't want to take away his fear but the there was no alternative option.
      Regarding taking away people's emotions I got the impression it was emotions specifically relating to a particular topic not that they would never be able to feel anger or fear ever again.

    • @alexblake5369
      @alexblake5369 Před 11 měsíci

      @@munchkette The game's understanding of how law enforcement works is very interesting. I mean that's not to say corruption isn't a thing, and Alex could have been arrested on false charges but the game constantly forgets that her friend and ally Ryan is a PARK RANGER, aka he is a law enforcement officer.
      Granted the game never clarifies what his jurisdiction is but even still if the charges are outrageous and clearly corrupt Ryan should be able to get it thrown out and get Pike in a lot of trouble. Alex would too, eventually but it's easier for other law enforcement officers to request assistance from higher level agencies when dealing with other departments.
      Also this could have been an opportunity for the game to make the side quests and your choices matter more. Like picking the right set of options would gain Pike's loyalty and give Alex the option of talking Pike down but instead the game wants to force this choice on us that as far as we can see has no downsides to messing with Pike's head.
      Speaking of Alex's powers, that brings me to your second point. It's hard to say how Alex's powers work since the writing is very inconsistent and uses it as crutch for the plot a lot of times. Based on the limited interaction with Char it seems like its affecting all aspects of her life, but that could be because Gabe's death is affecting all aspects of her life, we just don't know or have enough evidence to draw a conclusion.

I am a sucker for the empath trope and I was curious how it could be used it influence characters or plot points. But well, it's pretty obvious that the game does nothing useful or consistent with these abilities, eventually switching Alex to a telepath / Elsa who can read memories from objects instead of water. I was really interested in the fight between Mac and Gabe (stationary posing nonsense aside), but as Kamen points out, it's the only time where Alex is truly overwhelmed by someone else's emotions and we don't get to see her learning how to overcome this sort of danger.
    I think the greatest issue I take with the Life Is Strange games is that all of them have a lot of potential. Part of the reason I consider them so polarizing is because they have great ideas in there, but the execution is often weak or unsatisfying, which leaves the overall experience very frustrating. They definitely work for a core audience, but I think that's from the audience seeing some elements they enjoy and focusing on them only. For outsiders who try to engage with the game, the mediocrity and lack of achieved potential just leaves a bad taste. At least for me, I know LIS titles could be so much stronger or critically engaging, but they just never dig deeper or try to make a cohesive experience with the mechanics and choices. It feels more like a bare minimum effort and walking away because it's "good enough."

    Can't really agree. The game has HUGE pacing issues because of obviously being forced out early, but as a whole I enjoyed it a lot. I enjoyed interacting with the characters, the soundtrack was good, and the environment was charming. There were only two killer flaws I'd say: the game was WAY too short for what it needed to be flesh out everything, and the villain was needless, and the plot would have been improved by removing a "villain" entirely and just let the plot be about Alex dealing with this new situation she's in/the loss of her brother.
    But terrible? Fuck naw, it's a 6/10, going up to a 7 if you're somebody that's just looking for a relaxing means to while an afternoon away.

I felt the decisions actually mattered rather than the given ending of a lot of games of this genre. I liked the side characters way more than Chloe and the people in the first game. This game isn’t perfect by any means, but I had a great time playing this. I respect your opinion and the video gave a lot of insight on things I definitely missed. Where a fair number of decisions made in both side and main missions, lives spared or killed, how you reason with certain characters, even your play style, comes back to affect the games in both minor and major ways. Heck I would even say they even curb check the Metro games substantially in this regard too due to how frustratingly limited that series’s options are compared to Deus Ex. And I love Metro.

    I think Charlotte being angry at Ethan and Alex made sense in her grief process. Regardless of the company's nefarious scheme, Gabe would not have died if he hadn't been in the area trying to find Ethan in the first place. She lost her partner because her son disobeyed her, it's only natural to bear some anger and resentment in the early stages of grieving.
    Her anger at Alex is more circumstantial in that she represented a major change in Gabe's life then within a week of arriving Gabe is dead.
    If anything didn't make sense I would say it's how well adjusted Alex was only a week after Gabe's death. You'd think she'd be a mess she literally just reunited with her brother after years apart and within the space of a day he was dead, instead of being inconsolable she was making quips about sculptures and consoling other people.
    I think they killed Gabe off far too quickly, I knew he was going to die as the game premise was she uses her power to solve his murder. However I think we should have been given more time to get to know his character. They were clearly going for a traumatic event right at the start of the game like in Life if Strange 2

    i personaly think the backstory dump was placed in the later chapter becuase its not meant to give further information, its meant to show new information. meaning its meant to show that Alex never actually had powers but that she is telling herself that she does simply as a way to tell herself that she can control and know the situation around her. she wants thinks to be clear and one dimentional becuase she cant handle that sometimes emotions and things (like your dad leaving or not getting adopted) just dont have a set reason. its why the version of gabe thatś there is telling her to see and understand. it would also be why she is so randomly manipulative: she can't stand not being in control of everything all of the time.
    that being said me saying that Alex doesnt have anything resembling powers but simpy gets confused herself when dealing with the strong emotions of others is just a theory that i choose to somewhat stand by becuase otherwise the last chapter would just be too random and dumb like some other points already are anyway.

    • @Rikrobat
      @Rikrobat Před 2 lety +4

      Empathy could be wielded as a power, but the story has to be willing to engage with the pros and cons of this sort of ability. If someone can tap into the emotions of someone, can they also maipulate them? Is it invasive to use an "empathy power" to calm someone down to diffuse a situation or make them at ease when they have every right to be upset or afraid? LIS3 knocks on the door of these possibilities but doesn't engage with them. Was it right or wrong to remove that one woman's anger in that moment? It eliminated the anger but left her an empty husk-that creates a possibility for consequences. But in the confrontation against Jed, she's still bitter towards Alex, so what is the difference made by this choice?
      Having a character that can be overwhelmed by the strong emotions of other people could have been interesting too, but it happens once with Mac and half-assedly with Ethan, then stops being relevant. Deck Nine clearly didn't know how to get Alex the info she needs from people, so they abandon the "empathy superpower concept" and blend it with telepathy instead.
