It's wonderful to be in the company of folks like yourselves, who place the stories within the time and space where they occurred. Mariana's part of the story is certainly fascinating, and we appreciate you for eliminating some of the judgements we make about these people, by keeping us focussed on the facts that history presents. All in for Anne Lister and her story :)
I recently visited Church Lawton in Cheshire and the Lawton family grave. Nearby are two graves in memory of Lawton servants. One was erected by Mariana to their long-serving housekeeper, Mary Routledge died 1832. The second was to one Harvey William Buckley, died 1905, butler for 10 years to the late W.P.Lawton. (This was a descendant of Charles, Mariana's husband.)

I don't think we do but she must surely have been heartbroken.
wow, this is truly an eye opener. Little we know about women back in 1800's. I think what Marianna's decision to marry Charles was merely to help her family, which i think, there is nothing wrong during her time. She is family oriented and I think she did the right thing. Besides, the Lawtons were not poor at all. They were somehow regarded as middle class so Marianna ending up with the rich guy is given.
