    When the Lesbian Culture and those men & women who support them had come together, they created a powerful GJ audience and had a 'big impact.' I would hope Amazon Prime looks to GJ as they are constantly looking for great ideas for an ever growing digital audience, well beyond HBO who keeps trying to sell subscriptions for only what they offer. I bought my digital series 1 & 2 of GJ via Amazon Prime.

    I've heard one of the issues with viewers was the lack of interest in Anne Lister's business interests. The most memorable quote from the Gentleman Jack series that I will never forget is from her coal negotiations with Jeremiah Rawson, "226 pounds 17 shillings and six pence." I loved both series and would like to see more. Sally's scripts are genius. Nothing is accidental or coincidental. Her use of the Sowden subplot to juxtapose Sam Sowden's death with Ann Walker's "le petit morte" and Thomas and Suzannah's wedding with Anne and Ann's commitment at Easter 1834 was pure genius. There is so much subtext in the scenes. One of my favorites was Series 2 Episode 1 when Anne Lister was dealing with the new groom who refused to wear "cast-offs." Ann Walker is in the background the whole time admiring Anne Lister dealing with the situation. I don't know if anyone else out there caught the subtext but I did and it was thrilling to watch Ann Walker's enjoyment of Anne Lister's complete command of the situation.
    I'm hopeful for more of the story and Sally's wonderful scripts.

    • @crimson5k440
      @crimson5k440 Před 2 lety +2

      The same when she straps on and off the guns...she's in awe of her wife and how she handles situations that would otherwise be taken care of by a man.

    • @kk33613
      @kk33613 Před 2 lety +7

      @@crimson5k440 Certainly the pistols have an affect on Ann Walker. I mean she is all aquiver watching Anne Lister handle the situation. She is absolutely enthralled by her butch wife's appearance and attitude. IRL most femmes do get a kick out of watching their butch handle shit. Even though the lesbian plot is main text, there is plenty of lesbian sub-text and if you don't know what your looking for you'll miss it. It's almost like an inside joke. Well sometimes I think it is an inside joke that is a nod to the lesbians in the audience because I would think that it probably goes straight over the heads of the straight audience. I give a great deal of credit to Suranne Jones' acting chops for her ability to play Anne Lister. However there are certain gestures and mannerism that are unique to lesbians and Suranne got them spot on, as did Sally's script.
      It;s really a shame that HBO dropped out but hopefully one of the other major producers will pick it up.

    Hi,mi always enjoy your chats Pat, & wherever Sally talks I find her & closely watch her too, absorbing every step of the process to bring each episode to us, your grateful fans, both straight & gay, because it’s a history lesson, in so many areas, covering many decades that fill in gaps & expose so much more than we could have hoped for.
    Can’t you sell merchandise? Like Pats mug, the badges, postcards of the house, (many people have jumped on those already, so I know they sell) the stars, could sign photos etc. the realm of raising funds to prove how serious we are, could help someone pick up the show.

Suranne Jones is ridiculously hot (as is Sophie Rundle ❤) & a show about a younger version of Anne is - to me - only acceptable as an addition to the GJ universe - not a misogynist and ageist replacement.

    So I call bullsh*t on HBO's excuse for cancelling this show. This is about some hetero white men leaning in to the extremist right wing homophobia movement.
    Every year look carefully at which shows get cancelled. Most are female led or produced, or prominently gay themed vs 1 or 2 token gays on an otherwise white hetero show. Misogyny and homophobia is alive in Hollywood still.

    How can HBO say there’s not enough interest? I thought 40million viewers absorbed each show, a,college was named after Anne Lister, tourists bring finance to the region, the house is swarming with visitors more so than ever before, the books are flying off the shelves, being borrowed, resold, reread, the advertising, the talk show interviews, showing the costume designers & makers. What more do they want to prove it’s a success? If they pull out, & another group pick it up, I hope HBO is ridiculed, for dropping a huge success. Then later, like other period pieces, a feature film could tour the cinemas. It’s endless, I know teens who now want to make studies of them all as part of their exams, & if the plug is pulled & we miss out of the following seasons, they won’t have a definitive conclusion, or comparison to Now! That will be so sad.

      The BBC is being bled dry by the current UK government, so doesn’t get a fortune… and it’s not their choice to cancel, it’s HBO and their money grabbing mentality!

    HBO really made a big wrong decision to cut the production line of period drama. So far the video contents in discovery channel is very duplicated and boring. My feeling is period drama always warm ppl heart especially in this trouble world right now.

    The show Lucifer got picked up by Netflix, so hopefully a different channel will pick it up.
    HBO sucks. They cancel such a brilliant show - their only show with lesbian characters as the leads - yet keep on shows that are not even close in quality and social impact.
    The Gilded Age is fine. Mindless entertainment but in reality just a hetero soap opera based in the gilded age.
    Maybe HBO wants to allocate the GJ money to trans & homophobic "comedians" and wife beater actors like Netflix.
    This world is going in a very scary direction.

    I wish we could have a series on Anne when young. Things start getting a bit depressing with Ann Walker as time goes on. I think the romance of the first series was lacking in the second. The various love interests of a younger Anne Lister would re-energize things on the romance front. Brave lady, Pat. So sorry you missed Halifax. PS. I prefer when you direct, Sally.

    I’m sorry the second season was bad. We waited 2 1/2 years for the second season. And it was not good. The banter between the sisters was not there. Honestly I cannot believe she had two And a half years to write this and it was bad

    I loved this show, and sad that it was not picked up by HBO for S3. And I understand its impact and glad that it existed as a catalyst. But a full-on campaign to renew it with actual letters? There are an awful lot of much more serious REAL LIFE issues affecting women and LGBTQ+ people all across the world, RIGHT NOW, that need this kind of organized activism. Your letters and tweets and phone calls could actually improve lives, rather than saving a biofic television program. Priorities, people, FFS.
