    Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle are brilliant in their roles!! And their chemistry is absolutely PERFECT!! And Gemma Whelan is awesome as Marian Lister, Anne's sister. Marian and Anne had conflict, but she loves her sister and wants her to be happy. And I just realized that I am in love with a woman who lived 200 years ago!!! Thank you Miss Lister and Miss Walker for being who you were born to be!!! I ❤️ Gentleman Jack!

    this is a superb interview, both because Wainwright and Jones are so great at their craft, and articulate about the knowledge they've gleaned while developing their historical character, but also because Christiane Amanpour is one of the classiest journalists alive.

    I've lived near Halifax and known Shibden Hall all my life, but as Sally Wainwright says, Anne Lister was hidden, so the house was just a museum with little real context, merely the former home of a prominent local family, with it's most notable inhabitant some kind of dark secret instead of being celebrated.

    I have read The Anne Lister books by Helena Whitbread and watched the tv show, and often think what an amazing woman Anne must of been, such a forthright woman for her times, going against what was percieved as the norm for that time period, It then astounds me when i read and hear about some woman around the world who are having to stay hidden in this day and age for fear of attacks or being criminalised for who they choose to love, and its makes me heart sore that the countries/governments and communities are mentally still living in them times, The world has not moved forward with the times for those women. :(

    The show should be celebrated however the narrative has been twisted out slightly in terms of a modern context view by the newsreader. Women historically always been the protected sex and men more disposable ,now...and then too. The lesbian women were not executed in 1830 simply because the culture protected women and they were more aware of staying under the radar. Gay Men would appear not to have had the same opportunity to stay under the radar as mens roles was more active in work and commerce. in general society, work and culture Before the wokes wade in...tread carefully and do your homework. I have spent time at Shibden Hall studying the social dynamics of the times in Halifax during that period.

    • @kimlinden2280
      @kimlinden2280 Před 4 měsíci

      You say "women historically always been the protected sex"? That is not accurate if you are considering a worldwide view of how women have been treated, the last two centuries, in various parts of the world, especially. And, the reason it was not illegal for lesbian women in the 1830's is not because women were "culturally protected". It was because leaders and authorities simply did not understand that a woman could physically have sex with another woman.

      Walker could and would give her money when asked. Instead of milking that cow, Anne admitted Ann to a mental hospital when sending her to her relatives didn’t work. Ann was manipulated by everyone, but Anne brought her everywhere to interact with people and GROW, find purpose. Lister did manipulate Walker, but what was the alternative? Friendship? Lister was desperate to fall in love, with anyone convenient.

    • @unnamed3932
      @unnamed3932 Před 11 měsíci

      @@randdiamond8090 Lister borrowed the majority of her money from other sources and not from Ann Walker. And Anne did not put Ann in a mental hospital. Anne arranged for Dr. Belcombe to see Ann privately while Ann stayed at a place she rented while seeing Dr. B. Anne wanted to make sure that Ann got the treatment she needed and was fit to make a Will b/c she did not want to take advantage of her if she was not fit to do so. Ann wanted to see Dr. Belcombe. The legitimacy of Ann's Will might have been questioned had Ann not been deemed fit to set forth her wishes and execute her Will. Ann and Anne knew each other before their courtship and Sally Wainwright said that she thought Ann was a lesbian and that Ann had long been rather taken with Anne Lister. Ann had an issue with being same-sex attracted and her internalized homophobia caused her problems. Anne Lister accepted herself as she was. Anne took good care of Ann and opened the world to her (as you said) and helped her build confidence in herself.
