I agree, they actors/actresses are just as such, Actors... One cannot expect them to embody all that the character is. So long as they do a good job at their role, which I think Suranne has done, then that is good I believe.

I think Suranne and Sophie are absolutely perfect for these roles. their onscreen chemistry is amazing and it doesn't bother me that they are both straight actors, all I care about is the perfect portrayal they both give Anne Lister and Ann Walker. I could not see anyone else in the role of Anne Lister, Suranne has absolutely nailed the part. I am a lesbian, I love the Lister/Walker story. This show is amazing and I am so glad it has brought not only Anne Lister and Ann Walker into the light, but also shown how much of an amazing actress Suranne is.

I agreed with both of you. Suranne represented the character, the historical personality, and the sense of lesbian so well and may even be better than most (straight or not). Such an extraordinary story teller actress. and how thoughtful her answer was to this stupid question. if you never been abused, are you not qualified to portrait and tell the story?! interesting point indeed

I don't see how anyone could have played it better. She doesn't need to justify anything. A gifted actress and committed to this role, Suranne has taken acting to a whole new level. Brilliant in every way, with her drop dead smile, and on point delivery, this is a masterpiece of entertainment and education. Kudos to the whole cast and crew, led by the incomparable Suranne Jones.

I really couldn't care less whether a actor playing a gay/lesbian role is really gay/lesbian, for me it's
important that the role they play is done well and respectfully, and Suranne plays this role so perfectly that no-one can really complain too much, but that's just my opinion, and I know there will be people having a say about it, but, who cares, she's doing a brilliant job!

I agree, It is an actor's job to bring a character to life on the stage or screen. Any director or producer should be looking for the best actor to play the role. I also feel that there is a great danger if it becomes considered politicaly correct that only gay/lesbian actors play gay/lesbian roles then might it not follow that only straight actors play straight roles? If that was to follow gay and lesbian actors would be basically put in a ghetto.

And that is exactly what she is doing. I think she is bringing Anne Lister back to life A little.. She is doing it with so many passion. It's amazing! Her eyes light up when she talks about her and about her playing her. She learned so much about her to getting to know her. To become the best Anne she could be. And she is.. And i love it! As Anne Lister Surranne is amazing in every way to have brought Anne Lister to life for me to witness on screen and to portray all the emotions, the antics, the love, the friendships, the family and business life, Anne endured as a human being, a woman in a man’s dominant world is incredible to see and feel! I simply can’t imagine any other actor playing this role. As a lesbian actor I truly get the argument and concerns and perhaps there is a woman who could have done it. But people forget how difficult it is to been given the opportunity to be seen in this business. Did they put out a “looking to cast a ‘real’ lesbian for this role” type of call or was it simply a standard breakdown? Who knows... I know that I love Suranne in this role. I’m giddy that she’s so intelligent and funny and has the absolute most endearing smile I’ve ever seen. TV/Film is all about the visuals first and the a lot of times the acting second... but even more important its about the networks. Take note of how long she’s been in discussion and how long she’s known the director and production teams. It’s also the networking that truly opens the doors. My 2 cents...

When they interview Jones and Rundle, and since their straight I would like for them to ask them what is it like to kiss the same sex. When they kiss is the kissing different then kissing a man and do they enjoy kissing each other. In the scenes they sure look like they enjoy it. But then again that acting.

Bravo! She is a fantastic artist and I appreciate her addressing this question with thought. Someone who is part of the lgbt community I find the question of those upset as to why they did not choose an actual lesbian women ridiculous. An actor is a performer for a variety of chacters. It is there job to be convincing in these roles. Like she said she has played other roles that she had not had real life experiences in, gathering information from people whom had these experiences is part of being an actor. It would be nice to see more lgbt lesbians particularly have more presence on screen, but not to type cast them but to challenge their acting abilities. I thought I might be the only one who didn't care that Suranne wasn't a lesbian. But it seems I am not the only one and that makes me glad. They are actors/actresses for crying out loud. Did you expect Johnny Depp to be a real pirate? I think these days we are offended often for no reason at all, and that it is a small minority that complain so hard that it gives the illusion of an actual significant populace of people who disapprove... When in reality, most people don't care and enjoy the show!

I think the conversation shouldn't be whether straight actors can o can not play lgbt characters but rather a) has the character and their story been well constructed and has lgbt people been involved in that process; and b) lgbt actors should never be denied roles just because they're part of the lgbt community, the whole idea of "straight actors can't play gay characters" comes from the fact that gay actors are denied the chance to play straight characters, so the solution is not to relegate gay actors to play gay characters but to open up the posibilities to lgbt actors (it's obviously a way bigger issue when it comes to trans actors and trans characters)

Poor Miss Lister☹️ the woman was an absolute Queen. A bit of a snob, admittedly, from what the show seems to insinuate about her manner which at times can ruffle my working class feathers…but a Queen nonetheless. Absolutely a woman to be admired. A woman out of her time. If only she had been born during the 21st century she would’ve found the love and happiness with another that she was so desperately seeking in her own time💔 I love this show and Suranne’s portrayal is (I believe) well done. Due in large part (obviously) to the countless actual lesbians who have poured themselves into telling Anne Lister’s story to the world. Like Suranne said…she is merely the mouthpiece, the face…through which others may express themselves. A real ally.

I couldnt wrap my mind about the thought of lesbians/bis getting upset over Suranne's casting. Like really?? Dear gays, there is really little to none to complain about! A lot of us agrees that it was an incredible performance! It's 2019 and gays are still making a fuss over straight people cast on gay roles? Respect begets respect, for this one there shouldnt really be any issue with Sureanne's powerful portrayal of AL.
PS, before anyone starts barking. I am queer.

What's all this nonsense about lesbians should play lesbians?
We had this sort of shit years ago, when people said that white actors should not black up and play Othelo.
No one moans when a female plays the roll of a man in a Baroque opera (such as in Handel's Julius Caesar)
And no one moans about an actor playing a cowboy, when they've never been a cowboy.

I don't think this whole "she's straight" thing should matter. Otherwise actual Lesbians shouldn't play straight characters, which is rather absurd. The job should be given to the ones who can tell the story the best, not the one who relate to it the most.

I think Suranne is not just straight, but she probably bisexuals too. Because, a real straight person wouldn't want to care or involve about a gay thing. This is what I've experience or maybe my country was just too religious and they do has a open minded about LGBT but for them to involve with its, won't happen.

I don't know what country you're in, but in England/UK, Australia, America, Canada, and others, there are several shows where straight women play gay or bisexual roles with complete devotion to the character. Suranne and Sophie are both straight, they just truly respect, love, and appreciate the LGBTQ community and had no issues immersing themselves in these roles.

In the Filipino tv series, The Rich Man’s Daughter, the actresses who played Jade and Althea are straight in real life too. But they were amazing in the roles and gorgeous to boot. And wonderfully committed to their roles. Just like Anne and Ann in GJ.

@@mysnood That's wonderful to hear, I will have to try to find an English translation of it. I have seen shows from many different countries, like Cable Girls from Spain, and the progress and quality of telling our stories continues to amaze me. It's very sad that some countries still don't support these kinds of shows.

Dear LGBTQIODSBYFZMLR "community". You are not a community. Please check the dictionary for the definition of actor / actress. Stop feeling entitled. You're not.
