    Just wanna make a shout out to the host, he is really a good interviewer! It's very rare to see this kind of a gem. The way he asked and transitioned to the next question is very smooth. This is a host that did his own research or even watch the show (Gentleman Jack) just because he's going to interview a cast from it, it is a refreshing thought to see a host who does not rely on the keynotes that their producers handed to them. KUDOS to this guy! And of course, how could I not give praises to Sophie Rundle. What a MAGNIFICENT actress! Her portrayal of Ann Walker is such AWE that I can't find words to describe how amazing she is. I can see award season calling her name, they better be!

    Perfection as Walker. Loved the two final scenes when Walker & Lister meet at the coal pit. Rundle's face glowed in the outdoor scene; the dialog between the two characters/actors was amazingly real, lovely, perfection right into their kisses. The chapel scene was heart-rending and joyful. All very believable. Wainwright is amazing with her real visions of how it really goes and should go. She and the actors gave me a gift in their skills. More... Season 2.

    only lesbian actors should play lesbian parts? who comes up with this nonsense? does this mean lesbians can't play straight? ffs, it's called ACTING!

    • @mathru96
      @mathru96 Před 5 lety +72

      Some people have started saying that because some straight actresses were really super off the mark. For straight people, they don't know we are nothing like that but us lesbians are rolling our eyes at some performances where the actresses obviously have no idea what it's like be a lesbian. Being a lesbian is not just loving women, it influences everything about you. Your interests, the way you carry yourself, the dynamic you have with people, the way you dress. That's why we talk about gaydar. Gaydar is really just knowing how to spot signals that a lot of us carry in the community.
      In the case of Gentleman Jack, I don't know about Sophie, but having watched every interview of Suranne about this show, I can tell you she's the most well informed straight actress I've ever seen. It's incredible. She knows the whole lingo, she's a great advocate, she takes the time to educate others about the LGBT community. She's the perfect example every straight actress should look up to.
      I think she did a deep dive into the community to know how much she knows and when it comes down to it that's what separates great straight actresses who play lesbians from not so great ones. As I said, being a lesbian is not just loving women so you have to get to know the community to play one faithfully. I feel like it's rare that there's this level of research and that most straight actresses, with good intentions, stop at "we're all human, it's not that different from loving a man". Like, yes, it's nice that you want to be tolerant and consider us as equals and whatnot but... in reality, this is erasing our differences. We are different. It's just that one isn't better than the other.

    • @jlo4543
      @jlo4543 Před 5 lety +14

      An alias surely that’s down to casting and direction? An actress who isn’t good at playing a lesbian shouldn’t get the job that’s why they have chemistry tests. I think we need more lgbt creators, directors, camera crew, so that the actor/actress is told how to play it if they need help 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @vexylrei3406
      @vexylrei3406 Před 5 lety +9

      I think this just goes with everything though, like who cares what the actors sexuality, beliefs, personalities etc are, it's acting. As long as they look and play the part who cares?

    • @danimarkus8626
      @danimarkus8626 Před 5 lety +8

      An alias has some very good points but in addition to that I think this demand stems from the demand that only trans actors should play trans roles. Which I totally agree with because for trans actors and actresses it's hard getting roles that aren't trans, especially for those who started their transition after puberty. So it's really shitty to give a trans role to a cis actor when there is a trans actor who could've played the part - and most likely better than the cis actor. Because being trans is not just about putting on clothes of "the other gender" and take another name. It is so much more that cis people (myself included) just cannot fathom and deliver. As for lesbian and gay actors it's becoming easier to get jobs I think, at least when they already had a career before coming out. So if a straight actress can play a lesbian convincingly (like Suranne for example, she is just marvelous) that's fine by me but some really don't get it and that's really annoying and frustrating to watch. I don't know if Sophie Rundle could've pulled of playing a convincing Anne Lister (I haven't seen her other work) but she is definitely great as Ann Walker, in portraying that inner struggle. So I am happy with the cast in Gentleman Jack and wouldn't want it any other way.

    • @Tatiana_Palii
      @Tatiana_Palii Před 5 lety +8

      It probably sounds strange, but I'm a lesbian myself and I agree, that it's a very strange idea. I think it's just a problem of good vs. bad acting, directing and researching. Having a certain profession, like being in the army, for example, also has a huge impact on one's whole life, but that surely doesn't mean that only people who'd been in the military can play soldiers in the films. The whole idea of acting is about pretending to be someone else - a totaly different person with their own story and life experiences. Sometimes men play women and women play men, especially in the theatre, but who cares, if they are good at what they're doing? And yes, should gay actors only play gay characters then? I understand that we can draw a parallel with race here, but that would be false since someone's private life is just that - private, it's not written on the actors face, so it doesn't affect the audience's impression in a straightforward way that race does. If you see the actor for a first time, you can only tell how good they are at their acting - not what their sexuality in the real life is.

      'The secret diary of Anne lister' was very much a golden kick start to dramatising Anne lister's love life in the early days, however in a one off one hour episode doesn't truly depict the entire plight, progress and triumph that Miss Lister went through as well as the extent on being a entrepreneur and traveller as well as a diarist. Gentlemen Jack covers these areas and so much more, I promise you! Watch the entire series :)
