    I love thats she was a real person with real emotions and real complexities. Her life and her history normalizes the existence of lesbians and gays and includes us in history. I’m so proud of this show. It is also wonderfully acted, written and produced.

    i know this is probably a bit of a weird comment, but can we just give a shout out to the interviewer here? He has clearly done his research and knows so much about particularly Sally's work. None of the interviews I've seen of either of these ladies has had as much background work done by the interviewer and also not limiting the topics to Gentleman Jack either was great - I really appreciate him talking about the other things they've done because they really are amazing individually and an excellent team. it's also nice to see how relaxed and informal they both appear here too. If anything is written by Sally or starring Suranne I know I'm not going to be disappointed.

      Not weird at all, your observations are spot on. You can tell how pleased Suranne and Sally are to answer and elaborate, and that was thanks to the interviewer.

    It's a very local story for me [I know Shibden well and was born and brought up in nearby Huddersfield] and I wondered if that played into it seeming so real and so contemporary in feel for me. So it's interesting to hear people in a completely different geography speak of how current it feels. Last time we visited Shibden, was the reopening just after the filming had finished for the second series and we had a long conversation with one of the curators [Suranne was obviously popular with everyone on site].
    It's a bit silly to feel proud about achievements you have nothing to do with, but I can't help but feel proud of being of the same place as Sally Wainwright, who I consider one of the greatest dramatists of our current era. Great interview - this pair always seem so accessible and normal.

    HBO once again put out a great non-fiction show with Gentleman Jack and I’m sad it’s over. Last nights season finale was great. Ann Lister went from thinking she had lost Shibden and was financially ruined and alone forever, to seeing Ms Walker and truly getting engaged to marry. I’m so glad Ms Walker didn’t end up with that bastard that was scheming to marry her for her fortune. Great job on Gentleman Jack to everyone involved and I really hope Suranne Jones gets some kind of award for her acting out of Ann Lister.

      I've not watched it yet but I do know the scene which introduces *Anne Lister* was filmed in *Little Germany, Bradford.*
      Those same streets have been used in at least 20 different productions in the last 10 years alone with the some of the most recent ones being *Downton Abbey* (2019), *Peaky Blinders* and *The ABC Murders.*
      She parks the stagecoach on *Cater Street* which is around the back of:
      Tommy's factory in *Peaky Blinders,*
      The theatre exterior in *The ABC Murders,* and
      The place where the Beligians are hiding out in the flashback scenes of *The ABC Murders.*
      The entrance to that warehouse building is on *Hick Street.*

    Correction - *Gentleman Jack* is the *BBC's* latest costume drama.
    *HBO* will try to claim credit for at least nine British shows this year.
    1 - *Gentleman Jack* is a *BBC* show.
    2 - *His Dark Materials* is a *BBC* show.
    3 - *Chernobyl* is a *Sky UK* show.
    4 - *Leaving Neverland: Michael Jackson and Me* is a *Channel 4* show.
    5 - *Brexit: The Uncivil War* is a *Channel 4* show.
    6 - *The Hunt for Jihadi John* is a *Channel 4* show.
    7 - *Years and Years* is a *BBC* show.
    8 - *Catherine the Great* is a *Sky UK* show.
    9 - *The New Pope* is a *Sky UK* show.
    There's no doubt other British productions in 2019 which *HBO* will try to claim all the credit for.

      I don't know about the rest of these shows, but Gentleman Jack was *co-produced* by BBC and HBO. That is the only claim to it that HBO has. We're not dumb over here, we know who wrote it, who directed it, and who starred in it and we can all recognize that it wasn't born in the USA, no matter what HBO people imply. People in the USA wouldn't have the guts to handle this kind of story properly. Too many far right people hating on gay people right now in America... not to even mention the fight we are facing with women's rights over here. The release of this show is very timely. Thank you Sally Wainwright, and thank you BBC for making it happen!

      The top hat is a modern invention. Sally decided the hat Ann Lister actually wore did not signal anything to a modern audience so she substituted the top hat because it speaks so clearly to us these days: it is assuming the power and status of a male businessman and member of society. There are other interviews with Sally that delve into the tweaking necessary to transform factual material not written as narrative into narrative for a modern audience.

    I wonder though why they've chosen to dramatize these 2 years of Anne Lister's life? They could've started with earlier affairs and heartbreaks (Marian & Vere) and finish the show with this big fat happy ending with Ann.

    • @frogmouth
      @frogmouth Před 4 lety +2

      This is more intense. The structure you suggest is more conventional. Also it leaves open the possibility of other series of different periods without cherry picking her life to make it a smooth narrative. In fact we evolve over our lifetimes and behave differently as we become more knowledgeable about people. We remember our former selves but feel oddly removed. Some continuity of course but many changes.

    • @MrMacrotus
      @MrMacrotus Před 5 lety +5

      She did ride especially on holiday but I guess Halifax wasn't that far and she had so much energy and maybe parking was a problem :). I am still reading her biography at the moment.

      I have seen some of Suranne Jones other shows like, doctor foster, unforgiven, an frozen I wasn't impressed I got bored. But when she played the roll of Anne Lister in Gentleman Jack I believe that's when her career went to the highest point she was magnificent in that roll, she nailed it. When Sally Wainwright picked her to play that part of Anne Lister she was perfect u couldn't have got any better.

I rarely see crossover in GJ of any Rachel or Gemma. She makes them rather believable individuals. Maybe the stories were not your taste and not her talent.

First of all I didn't say anything about her talent If u read the comment again I said she was magnificent in the roll of Gentleman Jack a she portray Anne Lister hands down what more can I say. I know I can't be good at everything I do I am not perfect. But then again maybe ur perfect u can do everything wright.
