- How to make beautiful music with an Ableton Push 2. In this video, I cover the fundamental concepts necessary to develop your playing with the Push.
By learning a few simple shapes and patterns, you can unlock endless creativity when coming up with chord progressions, melodies, and solos. The Push has helped me push my music to places I never thought possible. It makes learning advanced chord theory more attainable.
Some people might argue this isn't a "real" instrument. What do you think? What defines an instrument?

Absolutely beautiful work! I just got myself a Push 2 and started putting together short performance videos. Your stuff is next level inspirational! Keep 'em coming! :)
I appreciate that, thank you! Have fun getting familiar with the Push :)
Same thing im doing with touchable pro, it is cheaper then push, if u have good tablet...
@@jxmieblake Amazing stuff, spine tingling music. I would love to learn how to play this piece, is it your own?
For most RND and music gear it’s well past it’s shelf life if looked at simply on the count of how many years old it is. But, at the product - all I could see them adding is a higher res screen. If I had a wish list or a “in a perfect world” list, this would have faders and those touch knobs, but seeing as how we live imperfectly - putting faders would mess with the detentions and this thing is already built like a Mac truck. Still surprised we hadn’t even heard rumors. Or I haven’t at least.
imagine being the bar musician and arrive just with that push and everyone will look like wtf but then starts playing it!!
Haha I’ve done it and that’s usually people’s first response
@@jxmieblake Awesome! Then start to build up the rhythm loops and play to it... so cool! I suck at theory I hope I can learn to play like you on the Push :)
a new local hero was born
that would be the maschine mk3 standalone.
Great video man! Some of the best improv playing I’ve seen on the Push thus far. Love that thing.
Not false advertising... mind blown in about 4 seconds. Wondering how I've been oblivious to this instrument when I've been trying to learn synthesis/sequencing from a guitar background? My mind is also blown that somebody gave this a downward thumb.... Thanks for sharing! Truly inspiring!
Thank You for this inspiring video Jamie!
So amazing!!
Finally!
This is awesome. Keep it up man!
I'm using Push & Push2 through several years but mostly for fingerdrumming. All Push users were needed a such content, and Im so glad to find such uniq chanel like yours!
Thank you! I’m glad you found it too 😊
Uhh, so lovely chords and melodies reminding me of late George Duke... Wonderful playing and great video, thanks!
so helpful and clear. thank you!
This was amazingly beautiful and also encouraged me to fill in a huge gap that has always existed in my own music production: actually learning to play my Push 2 like an instrument, and using improvisation to come up with ideas. Thanks so much.
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻
@@jxmieblake Wow, I'm super impressed that you even take the time to reply to comments!
May I ask, how do I get from knowing the theory behind how chords are constructed, and how to (slowly) play a given chord on the Push, to doing what you're doing here? I mean I totally get the theory, and I understand how the shapes on the Push work, but...how do you do THAT? How do you just string a bunch of chords together and it sounds good? Especially when it comes to chromatic/accidentals which you're doing all the time? Are there certain combinations that you have just learned over time and then it just sort of automatically comes out when you want to improvise? What do I need to do to work toward what you're doing here? :)
absolute hero - #pushgoals please keep doing more of these. desperate to learn more!!
Very inspiring! thank you!
Just cant get enough from this video. Please make more chord progression tutorials like this. Outstanding...To play in scale is good for me as beginner. Jnthn stein is awesome too, but he plays without push scales..only chromatic c major. Its freakin hard for a beginner. Push 2 is a freakin awesome instrument.
Keep practicing! I appreciate the support, thanks for watching 🙏🏻
One of the best beginner videos I've found so far. Makes me want to buy a Push and give it a try. Thanks!
Genius. Thank you.
unbelievable !!!
You know when you find a video that covers a niche subject really well? Now imagine there are multiple videos like that on a channel that extrapolate enough to create an actual understanding. These are amazing! Thank you so much! You're an awesome teacher!
Your content is pure gold bro. I'm waiting for your course, I am 10000% confident I'll learn a lot from you. Using the Push as a piano is something I'm looking for, thanks!!!
Holy moly!
I recently got an Ableton Push back in July and let me tell you honestly my friends, this is a multi purpose instrument that has the tools to change and elevate your game as an inspiring producer like no other tool that I’ve ever used in my life. If you have a good ear for music and have had some experience with learning music or have used instruments in the past or present, this instrument would be a game changer for your production skills and take it to another level!
FORALL2HEAR TV facts! Push 2 is the truth.
You don't even have to be a producer. The way the Push presents possibilities to you, it makes you a better musician, a better songwriter, and lets you capture all of your idea and tweak them however you want. The sticker price is expensive if you look at it as a midi controller, but if you look at it like an INSTRUMENT then the price is actually pretty cheap.
But what if you already know how to play the keyboard really well and you're already used to a mouse style workflow, would it be of any benefit or a waste of money? I'm up or trying new things I just fail to see how the workflow of this would be any faster than a mouse, it's just not logical + you're limited with your VI selection
Great video.... excellent music lessons
Best explanation of using the chromatic scale i've seen!! Beautiful
Thanks!
These kind of devices redefine even more how sound and music can be made. And it's still changing...
Awesome explanation. Big thanks!
most inspiring Push demo on CZcams. Thank you
Man, love you videos. Solid material.
Thank you!
Love the video!
insane... awesome
I've been looking for this video for over a year. Thank you!
it is absolutelt an instrument on its own right. i am streaming live unprepared improvs with it every day, its fantastic. fantastic performance & great explanation in your video thank you.
brilliant 👏
Lovely jam my man
lovely
Very nicely presented and super helpful video. It's certainly worth noting though that you've done this in the "new" 4th's Layout for the keys. People coming to Push from Bass, as well as guitar, will love this and you're giving them a really clear idea of just how quickly things can translate from their to the Push! You make me want to hook up my sustain pedal too! :P
Dope
Wow. Very cool.
Great playin man, that piano sounds amazing!
Thank you!
Wow! I also got myself a Push 2 now and this was epic to watch man
Have fun with your Push!
very nice explanation of the Push 2 basics with soundful music inserts and examples...thx 👍
No problem!
When I bought it, firts three months I tough: damn, this is not what I wanted, and I left it a par months playing as always my cello. But then I started to play it again and know I don’t conceived to make music with out it. It’s an amazing instrument!
GREAT video on the push!
Thanks!
ok...been using Push for a year now...can't believe I just stumbled upon your tutorials only now. Won't miss any other one from now on. Definitely a good primer for learning chord patterns with Push.
I just started the channel in September, you haven’t missed much 😊 thanks for supporting!
oh man! I'm pretty convinced that you were playing the piano! awesome skills on Push!
Dayummm dude nice job
That’s some good push skills
Sick !
Great video man, would love even more Push 2 playing tips!
Going to be releasing videos again soon 😊
How in the hell, did he play like I play on a piano on that thing? That is bananas! Great video. That is amazing.
super helpful, thank you.
Glad it was helpful for you. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
This is very helpful buddy. The push has been one of my best purchases
Glad this was helpful 😊
Thanks...great video!
Thank you!
give mi more from this stuff its amazing
Amazing stuff man! Really helpful and also shows me I can use my push 2 to play piano, no need for midi keyboard, just takes a different approach.
Glad this was helpful!
круто! Тоже хочу себе Ablrton Push 2 🎹
DUUUDEEE! SO GOOD WHAT
🙏🏻
Nice, sounds good.
this is super helpful!
Thanks for watching!

Thank you for supporting 🙏🏻
Great video!!
Veikka thank you! 🙏🏻
Man just checked your soundcloud channel..... soo much talent... hats off.... thanks for sharing this info......
This was really helpful! Just got a Push 2 and really want to go beyond root position triads/Maj 7 chords.
this is fantastic. I get my push 2 this week
Have fun!! 😁
Wow, now I really want to Push
Great video
Dope,...
As a keyboard player this was Very impressive to see. Kind of like guitar. Just shapes may be ill buy push just to break out of a mold
If you have the means it’s definitely worth trying!
This video is awesome. :)
Thanks!
Bro ur on some Nujabes type wave, I love it!
Nice work, this is the exact skill I need to focus on the most with the Push2. For many years, I learned about music theory, and was a trumpet and piano player, before becoming more interested and invested in Ableton and computer music, however I was never so good with improvisation.
You've actually reminded me how I should approach the Push2 as an instrument, not just device for sound exploration and experimentation.
More please? :)
Glad you dig the video 😊
so beautiful
, best push 2 performance using that grand, so tasty, so much respect for this artist
Thank you 🙏🏻

That's great but I haven't seen too many tutorials on using Push with chords and piano playing. I was hoping to use the Akai Force in the same way.
2 Things!
1.How did you do this?
2.Can i sing over this song?
Love it!
Beautiful work! I've been looking at Isomorphic keyboards and I may have to use something like this or a Novation Launchpad. How would you play something like Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier on something like this?
Insanliciously Done🏋🏋🏋🏋🎯
Hi, can you please tell me what plugin and sound you are using for this performance if you don't mind? I'm just blown away by the pad pressure sensitivity.
I second this!
Very nice tutorial. Subbed:-)
Thanks!
it is, and you are !
Thanks Jamie, I’m new to the Push 2, you really inspired me to get more into this instrument. I’m a vocalist and songwriter, but I don’t play piano or guitar. Any help from you is greatly appreciate.
Hope you’ve been enjoying your Push 2 😊
Man... just happened over here. Great vid. Subbed and liked.
Thank you for supporting 🙏🏻
Are you familiar with the Linnstrument? Same grid layout, but with some crazy cool ways to bend notes and change the sound by rocking your fingers on the individual squares.
The video has definitely confirmed my suspicions about Push 2 being an instrument. I wonder if the recent Launchpad systems can be used similarly.
Yep, the old launchpads can be used the same way too. The chromatic key layout is the way of the future and lets you really be free with improvising. I've been doing it since I got a launchpad a few years ago. Here's a recent example czcams.com/video/LUCBKunnjBE/video.html
Love what your doing and where can I get a Push exactly like yours and I love the video
This inspires me to start playing with my push more 🙌
Should I learn how to play piano as well or do you think it’s okay not to delve into it much? I know how to build scales and basic chords but I don’t know whether I should put in the time into piano or the push... I am a decent producer but I want to be able to play live with musicians.
why not both? the theory is the same on any instrument. you wanna be a good producer? or do you wanna be a good musician that can produce play [X] instruments including the push?
@Jamie Blake, what piano VST are you using? Sounds so good!
You played so fantastic! Is it okay if I sample a part of what you played in this video my man?
Jamie, your piano instrument sounds so nice. What do you use? None of the built-in ones I've found in Ableton sound this nice!
Jamie plz, we wanna know
@Jamie Blake 😭
Sounds quite similar to NI ALICIA'S KEYS.
Awesome, Jamie! I Would love to know more about the isomorphic scale. Would you know any books or reference material? Keep on the great work! Cheers from BRASIL
Unfortunately I don’t know of any books about isomorphic layouts. Going to look into it now though 😊
Great video! I see how you design and colour individual chords. I’d love to know how you decide what chords go well together in a sequence... In other words how do you ‘progress’ from one chord to the next. Keep it coming mate this is gold
That’s a good idea for a video! Short answer is to learn about relative notation and then experiment 😊
Thanks for supporting!
I think you would really like the synthstrom deluge if you like the push 2
Dope I’ll check it out!
Great video! What is the piano sound you are using? Is a Ableton stock sound?
Can you do this with other input devices? I've got a launchpad but I'm currently too broke to buy any new controllers and I've been needing the piano sound.
Very soothing! Can you please tell me which Piano Instrument you are using because it has a lot of expression with very natural realistic quality as opposed to some plugin instruments available. Thanking for sharing!
It’s called The Giant from Native Instruments 😊
@@jxmieblake Also .. a joy that you respond to comments .. It is a big failing with many contributors here but in your case you are setting a high and positive standard that others should follow! thanks for your swift reply.
No problem!
Hey man! Loved this video and subscribed to get more like this. Jnthn Stein is another person I follow that plays soulful stuff on the Push. If you're familiar with his videos, how does your style of playing differ from his on this instrument? Thanks!
Which piano sample are you using for this? Is it the Ableton grand piano with a lot of sustain / reverb? Sounds BEAUTIFUL.
Love the tips, but I've got a question: I'm hesitating getting a Novation Launchpad X to improvise like this (cheaper than the push2), but there is no sustain pedal input. How important is having a sustain pedal for the kind of improv done here ? Thanks!
Get the push1. It's the same price as the launchpad but not so different from the 2nd and better than the launchpad if you are interested all the other things the push does
Get the push. You'll regret not getting it if you get a launchpad. Like dude above Mr just get the push1...I have all the launchpad and as soon as I got the push2 I was done with them.
Freaking awesome 👏🏻 i want to sell my Pisano, buy push 2 and practice enough to play like you 🔥
Is this in 3rds 9r 4ths? Vertical or h9rizontal
Thanks dude! and you suggest a theme for another video: do the same thing as this one, but more in depth;) is it possible ?? thank you for your videos. interesting very
