Great interview John. The guy behind the guys who was there for it all !! He's the fly on the wall all of us fans wish we were and love that he gave mad props to Ant. What an insane amount of talent there was in that group.

I met Richard once at a Genesis tribute gig. He’s exactly the same off camera as he is on. Lovely guy.
Thanks for this, John. A nice present for the weekend!

I met Richard too at a Genesis tribute concert. I chatted to him briefly.. A lovely man, and he signed my copy of his book.

What did they eat? what time did they go to sleep? musical rehearsal schedules? books did they read? How did they create such incredible music!

Your getting into stalker territory there dude:) They ate sausages and potatoes and other 'basic fare' according to Anthony. They worked 9 to 5 according to the album by album interviews with Steve. Science fiction according to Tony Banks. They all brought there 'bits' to 'the crucible' according to this video and the most dominant voices bludgeoned their way into the dominant melody while others 'would back off' and play something sympathetic, according to Anthony. Peter and Tony apparantly argued the most, but Anthony says that Peter "would mostly be ignored" on arrangement (which was a mistake) and spent more time on lyrics and contacting agents.
Their melodies came from all over, with Fairport Convention (particularly with Sandy Denny, particularly when they had their keyboardist, particularly when they had two guitarists) being big, but late classical withTony, the Nice, and In the Court of the Crimson King, and Family, Love, and later The Weavers drummming according to Phil. Yes I remember way too much of this stuff.
I was joking at first, because I get your interest, its interesting to listen to the tracks on trespass and try to think of who did what. Then you find out something like that the drum beat in Mama isn't Phil, and in Land Of Confusion its mostly Tony 'on drums', which are synthesized. Its like a puzzle.
What I find most interesting is the fact I can't imagine ANY of these guys arguing at all, and yet apparantly thats ALL they did. The closest I've seen is Tony saying he'd say "your ruining it, your ruining it". Which I find both adorable and hilarious (not being there) and Phil talking about the costumes and saying "Pete would probably say 'oh for fucks sake leave it alone' " which I can't even remotely imagine coming out of Peter Gabriels mouth.

Beans and toast. Isn't that what all the legendary bands ate before the became big? Lol
