Theyre great friends, Phil was Petes drummer on his solo tour, a session player on his third album, Pete sang on Phils third album and Phil was Petes best man at his wedding. If anyone pushed Peter out of Genesis passive aggressively it wouldve been Tony Banks.
Genesis definitely became more mainstream and "radio friendly" after Phil Collins took over as lead singer; but it was a major step backwards when it came to the artistry of the music. We started out with Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and eventually ended up with We Can't Dance.
A trick of the tail, wind and wuthering, duke are all fantastic albums. Even stuff from abacab, self titled and invisible touch are outstanding. Phil is not the issue.
The artistry never left, it takes a lot of talent to compose really good bangers like Genesis did in the 80's. Think about most of the 70's prog bands that tried to went pop in the 80's, almost none of them hit the charts like Genesis did. Even Gabriel succeed becoming mainstream.
It wasn't a step backward, at that Point in time you go big or get buried. And they went big. They had to reinvent themselves, surely can't do another supper's ready in 1988
I definitely enjoy the Gabriel years better, but a lot of that has to do with hackett being there....... They just got a little bit too commercial in the eighties for me.
I think the Phil direction got them a lot more mainstream play. I like their songs well enough when they're on the radio. But it's Peter's stuff that brings me to a dead stop and sends chills up my spine.
Exactly this! Phil's front man era does nothing for me but if catapulted them into the mainstream which is brilliant. Peter's era was always so much more musically invigorating and creative
literally the statement just before this clip of Peter he talks about how his child was in an incubator for a month and the band didn't really have any care at that time for family things, nor did he appreciate their not understanding why he would prioritize his child over genesis. He was ALSO offered opportunities to "revolutionize Hollywood".
Wow its almost like a yesterday I went to a concert of Genesis with Eugene and Peter walked out had no clue who he was 😀 very young nieve girl i was. 1977 I believe
The whole of Genesis from beginning to end puts them in the same conversation as Floyd, Zeppelin, Who, Stones, Beatles and Moody Blues. Who among them, produced a star like Collins? To outdo a talent like Justin Hayward is amazing.
I love Genesis! Feels like we are living Suppers Ready & this being the year of the Dragon I’m just waiting for them to show up “shimmering silver head of wisdom looking at me” lol❤
I love Genesis who ever is frontman, but for me Peter Gabriel's time being front man for Genesis is my favourite time of listening to music,TLLDOB is the greatest album ever made,,some may have other favourites but me 50 years on its still my favourite, not just of Genesis but all albums,I am quite literally obsessed with it,"John is drifting out of sight" but not totally,😂😇
So many people keep crediting & / or blaming only Phil Collins for what Genesis did following the departure of Peter Gabriel, but that's ignorant. Tony Banks was clearly the dominant songwriter in Genesis for at least a couple of albums after Pete's exit. Eventually, Phil became equal to Mike Rutherford & Tony Banks in terms of songwriting in Genesis. However, Phil was rarely if ever the band's dominant songwriter, and he was certainly never the boss of the band.
Years ago Peter said he and his wife had a new baby and he couldn't do it all and invest all the time while being a father too. That's why it was sort of abrupt. The baby came into the equation. That's how I heard him tell it. They're both great and not that similar in singing voice. You can like one or the other, or both. I like both. I didn't get my first record till seconds out.
Phil was great with Genesis but nothing will ever replace the original Genesis Peter Gabriel years. If you were listening to UKProg at this time, you know exactly what I mean. From America 🫶🏻
It's a fairly well-known fact that when Phil Collins became the lead singer of Genesis, he tried to sing the way Peter Gabriel did. They auditioned other singers, but Phil's singing was closer to Peter's than anyone else's was.
They never argued, there's also a photo of the lm at the end of such concert hugging each other. If anything, It was Banks Who had something against Gabriel
Phil Collins did not take over -- if you mean that he took over control of the band. He did take over the lead vocals though. A lot of people don't really understand the inner dynamics of Genesis. People often assume, rightly or wrongly, that whoever does the most singing does the most songwroting and bosses the rest of the band around. That was never the case with Genesis.
A video about something that happened nearly 50 years ago, the facts of which are well-known and well documented. Why imply that this is some kind of new revelation? (excuse the pun).
Genesis was way better and more successful with phil collins that invisible touch album sold that most out of there early stuff phil collins was the better singer to more successful solo artist to
Always felt the opposite personally, I really dislike all the post-Gabriel music because I just love that early prog sound that they had and am not keen on the pop aspect. Glad Collins was able to take control and do the music he wanted regardless, all while Peter Gabriel could continue his own path.
@@matty4351 Phil did not take control. Phil, Tony, Mike, and Steve continued Genesis without Pete. Those 4 wrote & recorded 2 studio albums. Never has a band been so blessed by two fantastic front men.
AC DC?
He was at the genesis of Genesis 😂
Well that was Gabriel, Banks and Rutherford

I think it was more than Tony Banks, but I'm sure the Rutherford, and Hackett were probably relieved in some fashion .
So can you confirm you heard Peter's voice on "Take me home" along with Sting's, please?!? :-?
Two of the greatest Frontmen ever
‘I can’t take a piss without hearing Phil Collins’
Peter Gabriel, sometime in the 1980s.
Lmao 😂
Creative differences are common but parting on good terms and maintaining a relationship over the decades is something to be acknowledged
I like that he’s not jealous of Phil’s success. Trick of the tail and wind and the wuthering were the peak of genesis
I wish I could meet Peter Gabriel in person!! That would be a bucket list moment for sure😢
Love them both beauutiful singers ❤❤❤

I mean, Phil and Peter did work with each other again in Peters Melt Album Phil providing drums for songs like Intruder and Biko

Why do we need highlighted CAPTIONS??
Just b4 and just after "Abacab", by mind, I thought they'd go under! They ralied! I was so proud!!

Always liked Genesis!! Peter Gabriel's solo work tho is really strong, but his song Sledgehammer is ridiculously good & underrated imo

didn't Phil play on Melt and other Peter Gabrial material? Pretty sure they're are cool both are masters

I like both.

Phil was invited, didn't know what he was getting into.
I only wish Floyd could've gotten along as well as Genesis. Very similar transformations in both groups but one was cordial and the other adversarial.
Gabriel should have took the mike for the last ever Genesis tour. That would have been worth seeing 😊
Phil was great with Genesis but nothing will ever replace the original Genesis Peter Gabriel years. If you were listening to UKProg at this time, you know exactly what I mean. From America 🫶🏻
Peter Gabriel was the centre of what Genesis was. Phil Collins made something else out of it. Different band.
Gabriel's Genesis is the only one I listen to. Collins' Genesis; with the exception of maybe 2 songs is pop catered to the masses
@@tortoiseslayer8that's a very ignorant and one-minded reasoning

Peter's Genesis is great! But, I like Wind more than Lamb.
Yes, Gabriel was there on their tour, but he didn't have the balls to get up there and do a song!😂

The otherworldly or ancient chronic sound was Genesis

all old news
Peter Gabriel looks like trey Parker
Why I HATE P.C. ! EVERY TIME I WON'T TO LISTEN TO PETER GABRIEL, I HAVE TO HEAR P.C !!, (🎉 He's just Peter's drummer ! ) 😮🎉
P.C. had more success with Genesis and as a solo artist.
What Happened to you Music, you use to be cool...

Well if you measure the quality of a musical band by the sale's numbers than Bad Bunny is the greatest of all! 😂
Never liked the Gabriel version of Genesis It's just too weird for me.

I ❤ the entire career of Genesis from 1967 all the way to their retirements.
Too bad Gabriel's latest record is utter shite.
Phil Collins went throuh Epstein Island
Are you sure about that?
FYI.... I am anything but a Phil Collins fan.... could never stand the guy and have always thought his music was overrated.
