- Shading miniatures adds more contrast to them and makes them more readable. Using a wash might be a good idea, but is there a way to shade your miniatures more easily? Today, we will also mention speedpainting methods for warhammer.

Have you ever wondered if there is a way that could be easier than washing your miniature to shade it? Well, using a wash to stack shades in the recesses might be effective when it comes to painting fur, bases, terrain and other stuff with a plenty of texture, but what about that flat armor? Space marines and tanks certainly don't enjoy full washes. Recess shading might be one of your options, but using oil wash or enamel wash for panel lining is also a great idea! Using washes like these will make them go straight into recesses, effectively panel lining your miniature.
Certainly, when I finally paint the entire half of my space marine indomitus box, I will use one of the faster panel lining methods mentioned instead of recess shading.

Very nice and informative, what kind of oil, or products do you put in your beard though? My skin gets very dry and hurts me when my beard gets too long. Then I cant concentrate to paint minis.
@@moxopal5681 haha, I don't use anything special, but maybe you need to use proper shampoo for it
Just saw a video where you mention your from the chech republic just started reading the power of the powerless the chech republic has a interesting history love vaslav Havel and loveing your videos
You should add 'Blacklining' to the title.
@@_Bayul you can make the argument, that blacklining is essentially an approach to shading
Finally someone said it! You don't always need washes for shading, thank you very much sir!
You dont need them.
BUT they are a great help when you just get started and have absolutly no idea how paints behave and just want your army/warband tabletop ready. (1-2-3 done)
@@tristanellis-mascoll1171 true true, I also use washes for most of my miniatures, but the special models receive special treatment 😉
I know this was 3 years ago, but "finally?" By 3 years ago there were tons of videos that said you don't need washes lol
@@Thornspyre81 It was only then that I started seeing some tho, can't compare it with today.
Can you send me some example vids? Always good to see more👍

Dammit, even your "look at my mistake" coffee stained marine looks good, like he's waded through a swamp yesterday. 😆
I thought the effect was intentional! :D
This was so helpful!!! I've watched so many videos and this is the first time I've seen someone explain why my all over wash was failing in my minis which don't have lots of texture. You explained this so perfectly i could sniffle. Doing the lining or just along crevasses makes the mini pop like i want it to! Thank you!
These share a lot with older painting techniques when we didn't have a lot of products made for certain processes. Thanks for bringing back a lot of good solid technique talk! :)
I am glad you like it!
Thank you for your continued effort to publish useful content. Even with 20 years experience in model building under my belt your videos are both educational and very entertaining.
This one is certainly among the funniest. Love it! Keep them coming!
Excellent work - and I'm not talking about just this vid - I like the short/straight to the point format, tight narrative and punchy storytelling, without compromises on delivering key takeaways in clear visual form. I personally can't stand a 35 min tutorial on the subtleties of wet blending for instance. what I need is a few pointers to get me to try and that's exactly what you provide without the fluff. Keep it coming and I'm sure your audience will grow fast!
I'm discovering your channel, and I really love your minis, the paint jobs are amazing! (and great tips for newbies like me are much appreciated of course!)
Your painting tutorials are amongst the very best on youtube. Very professional, concise and clear. Bravo !
Thank you!
Thank you for doing this series my painting has improved significantly and its all because of these guides
This makes me so happy, actually seeing that it has impact is so great!
Thank you for the time you have taken to articulate this - exposure to one major presence in the mini-painting world has ingrained this “basecoat-wash-highlight” method to the point of becoming a Sacred Cow that is not to be questioned... until one has the epiphany that replicating the box art examples from this same company will never be achieved using this method alone.
Ninjon has a great video on replicating box art jsut using the colours listed on the box - it involves lots (and he means lots!) of glazing. And to be fair, even the Eavy Metal team admit that they don't just basecoat, wash, highlight when they do their work.
I need such Shovels for my Kriegs's Man, They need them. Truly.
Sweet video! Super comprehensive explanation on all the ways to shade!
Thank you!
Thee 5 minutes videos are amazing. I learned more in these 5 mins than some 20 minutes videos with info all over the place.
I really enjoy your 5 minute videos, they offer a lot of value in a short period of time and you talk at a decent enough speed that I don't wander off and get bored. Very engaging :-)
Exactly what I am aiming for! Thank you
Thanks for posting.I have been using the all over wash technique for everything with very mixed results, mostly not very good. Your video convinced me to improve and use better techniques. Looking forward to learning how to do some glazing with your videos : )
Hi, I always appreciate the accuracy and quality of your vids. So much quantities of infos in short vids is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you find them helpful!

I need more videos like this. Short and to the point. Explained more in 5 minutes than others hour long videos.
There is plenty on the channel! 👌
Great short video with GOOD info, AND he's FUNNY too!
Excellent and clear explanation; very helpful.
Freaking fantastic! As always Zumikito!!! :D Thank you so much!
Eyyy! Thank you for watching
Thanks for this awesome tutorial!
Dude, the amount of truly useful information you can put in 5 minutes, makes you one of my favorite painter youtubers.
Every video I you show something so obvious, so natural, that I may have also experienced it, but I don't see other YT painters discussing this...
Like the wash thing, Idk if it is clear to everyone else so it is not discussed, but to someone like me that can't find a painting community where I live to share this kind information, it is awesome.
There is a lot lot of value in this work. Congratulations, sir!
Seriously, I have learned a lot from CZcams and FB communities, but there where points that did not connected.
Like, shading with wash, shading with layers, is the same? When use which one? How they compare to each other?
And BANG, Zumikito has a video about that.
E-VE-RY video, I end it with a epiphany about painting :D
Thank you! I often mention obvious things, because I assume people of all skill levels watch these vids. Thank you for watching!
Awesome video mate! Very complete and I also appreciate a lot your humor 😅
Glad you enjoyed it!

Nice! I like the shotgun format of this video - BAM - informative and concise.
Thanks, very helpful video!
Love your videos so so helpful
Cool man thanks for the video!
You made me invest in a wet pallet, some nice brushes and new paints, so thank you 🙏 love your videos
I'm so glad! I hope they will serve you well
good tutorial, thanks for the help!
I like to use the pens for drawing designs on my space wolves shoulder pads, I find I can get them more accurate that way. If I need them darker or have to hide the pen lines, I then use that as a template to paint over after matting them down.
loved this video!
Hello. Another down to earth, clear and precise explication. Great. I paint in oils so dont use washes or dry brushes and shading is done easily wet on wet. But i'm an painter who started in the 90's before the acrylic boom. (yes, i'm ancient). that said i realy do enjoy watching the amazing results and techniques used by more modern (and much younger) painters than myself. All the best.
Thank you! That is such a nice comment. I have tried working with oils myself, but somehow don't feel as confident with them, might have to give it another try!
With every new video I like your content more and more 👍
I am glad to hear that :)
Just found your channel, but goddamn, if this isnt the best miniature painting channel on youtube. Well done sir! Looking forward to more content.

Using pens for recess shading...this actually blew my mind. I have to try it, before messing up the next power armour again.
the "bold assumption" have made my day XD... thumbs up and left an abo.
O' CZcams god, pls gives a blessing to this channel.
diki, toto bolo velmi poucne video, dost mi to otvorilo oci ako zaciatocnikovy
Jsem rád, ze pomohlo :)
Never tried shading with those Micron pen, but I will give it a try! I usually use them to freehand scribbles on purity seals, books or other text.
One trick I came up with was using a needle to do fine detail and get paint into recessed areas it acts like a quill and often prevents spill over also if able bend the tip to prevent gouging if you lack a fine touch hope this helps.
For textured species like dragons, I find that applying your shader colours before the colours you actually want it to be is much easier than using a wash. Especially if you're like me, and really enjoy doing colour gradients on their wings or belly that make applying a one-size-fits-all wash a nightmare. It does require a bit of planning beforehand, but its better than having to repaint entire sections because you misjudged, believe me
Cool thanks Dude
Gracias por tu vídeo.
Thank you
I'd love to see you paint some Imperial Guard or some Tempestus Scions
A mira, consejos sanos para seguir aprendiendo a pintar.
Black/Grey Contrast paint is also a compromise between washes and oil/enamel paints for recess shading. The contrast paint does a better job of flowing to the crevices of the model than washes. It's still not as precise/good as using an oil paint, and certainly more expensive, but it's less frustrating to use than a wash, and saves you from having to get into oil paints if you don't particularly want to.
Thanks!
Thank you!
very nice tutorial, perhaps a tip use acrylic ink for washes instead of oil paint and a flow medium all can be found in regular art materials and cost far less than specialized model paints…
I've seen calligraphy pens used to do panel lining and seen one on Amazon for gundam models
Great video! Any more info on those micron pens? Are there different sizes/would I still have to varnish?
Hi,
Found your videos and they are AMAZING. Straight to the point easy and simple. THANK YOU !
P.S. what is that blue miniature monster from the video?
It's drukhari beast, but can not remember which one
As a hobbiest with nearly 30 years of history. At first I disagreed- then i realised I agreed. This modeling legend is able to put it in better words. You just need to decide, am I painting a unique model or a unique army.
your content is amazing I'm surprised your subs are so low. Time for me to comment more to feed the algorithm
Haha, well the sub count is increasing to be fair! Thank you for your support
That beard, accent, sense of humor, damn I love this guy!)

Thx 👋😇

Great video! The only thing I would change is on several pictures and short clips of you showing something, the exposure time of what was being shown was extremely short and I had to go back to see it again or pause to look at it. Just a thought :)
Thank you! You are 100% correct, but since voiceover is recorded separately, sometimes it's not really solveable. Either way, I prefer to make it shorter rather than longer since you can come back to it
Excellent tutorial as always. What is your opinion of using India ink for recess shading?
Thank you! Never heard of that method actually, will have to reasearch that. But it all comes down to speed and staining the area around it, if it performs in both aspects, why not!
nice
Great video. Great explanation!
But I would like to know which brushes do you prefer and recommend for recess shading.
Oh sorry, missed this comment, they are the same ones as my precise ones, so Da Vinci Maestro series 35 (or 10 for shorter bristles)
@@Zumikito
Mucho thanko. Ordered one. I can't wait to try it.
Do you have a video about the difference between a medium and water for thinning paints? Or about the medium in general. Because I still don't understand exactly what happens to paint when adding water (or thinner) or adding a medium.
Hi Zumikito! What is that kind of brush you used in 3:07 for apply the oilwash? Thank you for your videos friend :)
Hey man, that is from the tamiya panel liner, it comes with the pot :)

How about a tutorial about cell shading effect?
thank you for the great video! is there a tutorial for the paints used on the grey soldier with gas mask?
No not really unfortunately, but which parts are you interested in? I can type them out

Oh cool, gundam markers *shot*
I found acryllic ink makes a good was tok.
u get a sub just for ur glorious beard sir
I use contrast paints for darklining
which gloss varnish should i use. A normal acrylic varnish? Will that resist against the white spirit?
When you use gloss varnish to prepare the surface for oil. What comes after that? Do you make another layer with matt varnish before the next acrylic layer?
Correct!
When applying the gloss varnish - do you allow it to dry first, or do you apply oil wash wet-on-wet?
I caught up to this mystery of selling water with paint before video I noticed it was just more water then paint i stumbled on it because i had been painting my figures on dry paper instead of a wet palette lol sooo yeah you can create your own shaders and bottle them in the same little bottle they sent you makes sence I think but there still useful to buy since the custome the paints for you
What do you think about full washing something like Necrons? Necrons have much smooth surface like the Space Marines. I full wash them because it takes care of the shading and makes them look less shiny and new. Your take on this?
Your minis, your style, your preference. If I wanted to keep them shiny, I would put oil wash over metallics however (no need for gloss varnish over good metallics really). If you like them a little rough and used and you like the result, sure!
Do you have the DKK guy with the shovel as a tutorial I’m struggling with dark greys for a space wolves 30k army.
Can the wash made with white spirit and oil paint be stored in a plexiglass jar?
