- This is Part 2: Led Zeppelin at Live Aid Continues...
Any requests? Whatta Whole Lotta Love!!
This clip has been cleaned up: the green hues from the 20 yr old + tape has been removed, the brightness & contrast have been balanced out.
The audio has been synchronized to the FM broadcast captured on an old cassette tape. That audio was pretty messed up & had lots of dropouts, hopefully the results are satisfactory.
Watch in HQ with headphones if possible. - Hudba
Not often you see a stadium show and the impression you leave with is, "damn that's one mighty fine bass player!"
shit😂😫
I love how nobody complains about JPJ!!!
A true legend.
Nobody Complained on Page Plant Either
cause these iPhones can’t really hear him, so there’s nothing to fuss about 🤣
Cause he doesn’t know how to mess up
he was not there or was he? I saw Willem Dafoe instead
It sounds like Saturday afternoon at my local Guitar Center
Me:Mom can we have Led Zeppelin please?
Mom:No we have Led Zeppelin at home
Led Zeppelin at home:
DUde I laughed pretty hard at that!
Firefall
i have a better version:
son: mom can we buy the Led Zeppelin live album ? (shows to mother how the west was won album)
mom: no we already have Led Zeppelin live at home (takes the live aid DVD)
What do you mean
@@lucasnn2008 too wordy
Just came here from the 1970 Royal Albert hall show. Fuck me, what a difference 15 years make. Going back to that year.
In my opinion any Zep is better than no Zep. It was great to see them together again for this cause. I wish they would do a reunion tour they would sell out. Instead of being a critic I am grateful to see them together once agin. Great memories from a great band. Thank you very much for the music.
And it was on this day that the musical genre known as "Grunge" was created. Led Zeppelin, ahead of the pack, as always..
More like Rape Zeppelin amirite?

So true, Jimmy Page’s tone sounds very grungy on this particular day
The most beautiful train wreck ever. I loved this from the day this was live and always will. I just love when page goes into his own thing at 4:07 and starts getting his swerve on. I don’t recall any bootleg or official live recording of whole lotta love that contains that guitar playing.
At least it was better than Justin Bieber.
@@a.t.m873Well Justin’s music is for snowflakes so of course it’s better lol
Led Zeppelin is led Zeppelin no matter what!
Susan Boyle on lead guitar at 0:30. No wonder why it was a disaster.
funny, the crowd seems to be getting off on it, the tv sound was no where as near as potent or as close to what the audience was hearing very loudly, and it would have helped of either of the two drummers kept the right time and groove
Ive been laughing at this comment for 10 minutes straight.
Should have had Susan Boyle on drums too!! Phil Collins was just being himself, AWFUL!
Thats one Susan Boyle that got tons more pussy then any of us! Even in that stage
How they got through this mess is nothing short of a miracle...imagine them having to go backstage and face their families, friends, and other musicians...wow! No wonder they were loaded!
any live zeppelin is solid priceless gold
They should've just had Tony Thompson on drums, Throwing Phil up there just for the clout factor( he was THE MAN in '85 ), set off a chain reaction of confusion, panic and all around uptight vibes. You can have two drummers in a band but they need a lot of time playing together before it locks in and is an overall plus to the sound. Put it together a few hours before the show and it sounds like a whole music store being thrown down a flight of stairs.
musicalchairs777 he was the only musician on stage that day
@@justinlarsen2281 Phil's a great singer, songwriter, drummer, piano player, producer, etc. But he, along with everybody else were in a tough situation and weren't prepared for it. You can throw an extra celebrity guitar player up there and just bring them out of the mix if they're lost. Can't really do that with drums. If you don't like mushrooms, you can pick them off the pizza. If the crust is bad, that complicates matters.
I agree. I think he and JPJ were the only musicians on stage that day

I large part of their sub par performance.they really didn't have a lot of time to rehearse. They were told Phil Collins knew the songs.various other mistakes.now consider the comeback at the O2 arena. They had a whole lotta timeti get ready , of course Jason knew the songs. A very good fill in for his late father. That O2 show was a premium grade performance.
I think his looks at the time are a big reason as to why the show is hated so much
UGH 1:46 I LOVE JIMMY DOING THE BACKUP VOCALS so adorbs
as Plant looks at him and smiles (which I love about Plant..he has a sweet side) .. Page obliviously dribbles.
Man every time I watch live aid footage of Zeppelin I go back to watching the version they did at Msg 1973 to remember how it sounds.
exactly it’s like they were different people; MSG is fabulous
Me too. This one's s train wreck
Robert was past his prime i n 73 too...I mean it was far better than this but not prime plant.
I see a lot of people blaming Phil Collins for this entire lackluster set and here is my opinion: if Collins could be blamed for ANY song of the Zeppelin set it’s this one, Whole Lotta Love. You can clearly tell he doesn’t know how to or when to play the drum fills between Page’s solo. Besides that, he did his job as a backup drummer in Rock and Roll and Stairway. The rest of this set that fell to shambles is on Jimmy Page. Plant can only be blamed so much, his voice being strained only adds to the low quality performance, but it can’t cause it. Jimmy’s playing absolutely causes this whole thing to sound like trash.
Page said Phil Collins only rehearsed for 2 hours before the show.
I've read Phil Collins's and he addresses this. He agreed to do a few songs with Robert Plant it became a Zep reunion and the others had been rehearsing for two weeks without him. He agrees itcwas terrible and he should have not done it but they insisted he would be fine.
Yeah absolutely doesn't know when it's the ending, he tried to end that during Jimmy's epic ending he plays every single time which obviously Phil Collins had never listened to like a waka waka waka waka waka waka waka waka waka waka waka Waka waka waka waka waka waka Waka, oh now it's over wackawaka
cocaine is one hell of a drug lol
Tony Thompson (RIP)-The drums killer, Best studio drummer ever He is played with Madonna, Dawid, Bowie, Power Station, Chic...
Digan todo lo que quieran, ellos son Led Zeppelin 🙌
Alot of criticism was thrown toward Phil & Tony for not drumming properly during the Zeppelin set. But Phil said in a 2010 interview that it was actually Zep who were the ones who performed badly. He said: "They weren't playing very good and I was made to feel a little uncomfortable by the dribbling Jimmy Page." "If I could have walked off, I would have - but then we'd be talking about why Phil Collins walked off from Led Zeppelin. So I just stayed there and bit my tongue."
I love Zep but after watching this, I'd have to agree with him cuz they weren't too impressive. Plant was off key in some parts & Page's playing was just plain sloppy. But even mediocre Zep is better than no Zep.
KoolCat ! Phil Collins is the best drummer ever and his adaptability to almost anything is 100%. It sounds like Led Zeppelin had a really bad day!
Still playing better than a lot of bands today
They also sound pretty alright 🤷♂️ Plants voice is not breaking too much and Jimmy is at least hitting notes in the key scale
They hadn't played together in awhile either
Not even mediocre Led Zep
Page was intoxicated 😵
tony thompson was one of the best 10 drummers of all time. he was formally invited to join led zeppelin right after live aid in 1985 but reluctantly declined because he had to take care of his dying father.
never heard that before , interesting comment
3:02 this voice crack should've been included in the original
Damn they were good sometimes the good Lord puts people together and it's just amazing they were great I could watch this all day
These guys didn't rehearse, or so goes the legend. Song 1 (Rock n Roll) was sloppy but by Song 2 (Whole Lotta Love) Robert's voice had settled down and Jimmy's swagger kicked in.
It was nice of the rehab center to let Jimmy out to play.
😂😂😂😇
That was harsh....but Mr. Page deserved it, I'm afraid.

@@goncalosantos496 I don’t want to get into a huge debate over this but Bonzo could wipe the floor with Phil.

@@velvetwatermelon2647 not really - both great but different (try listening to some Brand X). This was unrehearsed and Tony T had no interest in cooperating - Phil was just trying to stay out of the way.
It was neither age nor is lack of practice. It was simply that his voice rapidly deteriorated in the mid-70s, probably from overuse and abuse, chain smoking, etc. Cripes, you can even see him smoking a cigarette just before he begins the show! The only reason he could continue doing songs like this is that he was very musically talented, so he was able to improvise singing lower notes with less power. But unfortunately, it was his original power and range that was the appeal to songs like this.

I love Led Zep but this performance was NOT Phil Collins' fault.
Why was it anyone's fault? I think its pretty damn good considering.
Take into account they just rehearsed on the flight from England into NY...
several hours before that they were just relaxing at their homes. They obviously weren't in shape...and Collins did suck
The guy did NOT even know the songs! He certainly didn't help matters, that's for damn sure.
Jimmy forgot his own fucking song, and Robert was off key. Phil Collins didn't even have a minor role in this performance being shit.
Yep - Collin's didn't suck. A common misconception but it just isn't true. He'd just played with Clapton and that was all just fine. He had to mime half the time because Tony Thompson decided to let rip and not play with Phil properly. In fact, they were all well rehearsed except for Phil.
- Plant didn't even warm up his voice so didn't know if he was going to reach the first note or not (he couldn't) and was hoarse through the whole thing.
- Page was in a bad state anyway and hadn't yet realised it's a bad idea to be drunk on stage.
- JPJ almost didn't get to play because Plant just wanted Jimmy.
Led Zeps favourite song
And this is why John Bonham still is the best drummer ever
And people wonder why Robert Plant never wanted a full reunion tour......
He is doing good with his band actually

Es considerado uno de los más grandes, influyentes y versátiles músicos y guitarristas de todos los tiempos.
80 AÑOS.
God I remember Live Aid - a lot of legendary perfomances that day. We all gathered round our wee telly and watched this. Poor pagey though, he was completely fucked up on heroin. Amazingly though, he still pulls it of - because he's Jimmy flippin page!
Alex Simpson Poor Pagey? The dude gets completely fucked up on herion and God knows what else, and then has the audacity to put all the blame on Collins? Fuck that. Maybe if him and Plant took their giant egos out of the equation and actually rehearsed, then the only bad thing about this performance would have been Plant's voice shot to shit. Phil Collins should be the one getting the pity, not that junkie asshole Page.
I love Robert Plant's matured voice.

I agree
When stars believe the hype and think they can wing it. (yeah, I get it, their last toe nail clipping has more talent than me, but at least I know my limitations)
I wish I never saw this

this is one fantastic band is awesome.
Just amazing
I notice Page & Plant barely acknowledge John Paul Jones is onstage with them. Were there tensions between them at the time??
cardman880 I know nothing at all completely. But I saw another comment on this vid say that Plant wanted Page not JPJ to play... Idk tho
Collins fan that I am, I have to defend my guy! I believe he tried to play more honest to the recordings, especially coming right off the plane & with no rehearsal. But they also had the late great Tony Thompson (Chic, Power Station), who was playing everything too fast--and maybe that was by design as he probably didn't want Phil stepping in and taking away his lead. Then of course, Jimmy Page was zonked out of his mind and maybe Plant was a bit too. If Phil had his way, he would've played for everyone that day, and in the 80's he did play for just about everyone with excellent results. I just wish he had let these guys bomb on their own, but is there any rock drummer who would say no to playing with these guys if offered the chance?
Bentom86 me too!! He is number one on the top 10 singing drummers of all time and Roger Taylor, from Queen is number five. I like them both. I just love them dearly and they are so funny and darn good.
I think the sound was probably a little better than what it comes across as here. I would love to see a better version. Do they all seem really wasted? If not, they look wasted. I get the feeling they had been on the beach in Cabo for 10 years and hadn't played much ...
Actually, Tony did indeed join LZ in late 1985/early 1986. He apparently did 8 new tracks with LZ at Bron-Yr-Aur studios with them but Jimmy decided to shelve the project after Tony was involved in a car wreck later that year. Jimmy still has those master tapes.
Page is drunk.
Plant's voice is shot.
Phil Collins was the best one there, and that's not saying much.
John Paul Jones absolutely solid as always
JPJ was the best one there. Phil Collins wasn't great
True JPJ was decent but there was no need for 2 drummers. Most fills were terrible.
Collins and Thompson both kept missing ques. That second solo from Page was not intended to be a solo, that was supposed to be the final rave up to end the song, but when he realized they weren't with him on that he played it off like it was a solo. At that point, they were in a bit of trouble - the song was supposed to be over. Plant just vamped with "oh yes..oh yes..oh yes..finally Page turns completely around to both drummers to indicate to them emphatically that this final bit is the END! This is not a solo!
Plant looks decidedly haunted of expression going ooh ooh yes at the end.
I don't think he knew where the end of the song was, Phil kept going having a whale of a time until Jimmy turned around as if to say that's it.
It's like watching a pretty good Led Zeppelin cover band.
it's hilarious you said that because I saw a cover band called Zoso 2 years ago and they didn't even do Whole Lotta Love!
@@blutomindpretzel1735 Zoso is a great band, back in the 90s a local bar would have open jam night, me and a handful of musicians would play, one night a terrible snow storm was happening, these long haired guys come walking in the bar, I got talking to them, it was Zoso, we talked them into getting up and playing a few songs, it was killer, you never know what a big snow storm might bring.

Phil Collins - "It wasn't amazing to be there, I have to say. They weren't very good. And I was made to feel a little uncomfortable by the dribbling Jimmy Page. If I could have walked off, I would have. That day the tempos were all over the place, and it may have seemed like it was my fault, because I was the one who hadn't rehearsed, but I would pledge to my dying day that it wasn't me.
