  • This is Part 2: Led Zeppelin at Live Aid Continues...
Any requests? Whatta Whole Lotta Love!!
This clip has been cleaned up: the green hues from the 20 yr old + tape has been removed, the brightness & contrast have been balanced out.
The audio has been synchronized to the FM broadcast captured on an old cassette tape. That audio was pretty messed up & had lots of dropouts, hopefully the results are satisfactory.
Watch in HQ with headphones if possible.

Instead of being a critic I am grateful to see them together once agin. Great memories from a great band. Thank you very much for the music.

They should've just had Tony Thompson on drums, Throwing Phil up there just for the clout factor( he was THE MAN in '85 ), set off a chain reaction of confusion, panic and all around uptight vibes. You can have two drummers in a band but they need a lot of time playing together before it locks in and is an overall plus to the sound. Put it together a few hours before the show and it sounds like a whole music store being thrown down a flight of stairs.

I see a lot of people blaming Phil Collins for this entire lackluster set and here is my opinion: if Collins could be blamed for ANY song of the Zeppelin set it’s this one, Whole Lotta Love. You can clearly tell he doesn’t know how to or when to play the drum fills between Page’s solo. Besides that, he did his job as a backup drummer in Rock and Roll and Stairway. The rest of this set that fell to shambles is on Jimmy Page. Plant can only be blamed so much, his voice being strained only adds to the low quality performance, but it can’t cause it. Jimmy’s playing absolutely causes this whole thing to sound like trash.

Alot of criticism was thrown toward Phil & Tony for not drumming properly during the Zeppelin set. But Phil said in a 2010 interview that it was actually Zep who were the ones who performed badly. He said: "They weren't playing very good and I was made to feel a little uncomfortable by the dribbling Jimmy Page." "If I could have walked off, I would have - but then we'd be talking about why Phil Collins walked off from Led Zeppelin. So I just stayed there and bit my tongue."
I love Zep but after watching this, I'd have to agree with him cuz they weren't too impressive. Plant was off key in some parts & Page's playing was just plain sloppy. But even mediocre Zep is better than no Zep.

It was neither age nor is lack of practice. It was simply that his voice rapidly deteriorated in the mid-70s, probably from overuse and abuse, chain smoking, etc. Cripes, you can even see him smoking a cigarette just before he begins the show! The only reason he could continue doing songs like this is that he was very musically talented, so he was able to improvise singing lower notes with less power. But unfortunately, it was his original power and range that was the appeal to songs like this.

Yep - Collin's didn't suck. A common misconception but it just isn't true. He'd just played with Clapton and that was all just fine. He had to mime half the time because Tony Thompson decided to let rip and not play with Phil properly. In fact, they were all well rehearsed except for Phil.
      - Plant didn't even warm up his voice so didn't know if he was going to reach the first note or not (he couldn't) and was hoarse through the whole thing.
      - Page was in a bad state anyway and hadn't yet realised it's a bad idea to be drunk on stage.

Alex Simpson Poor Pagey? The dude gets completely fucked up on herion and God knows what else, and then has the audacity to put all the blame on Collins? Fuck that. Maybe if him and Plant took their giant egos out of the equation and actually rehearsed, then the only bad thing about this performance would have been Plant's voice shot to shit. Phil Collins should be the one getting the pity, not that junkie asshole Page.

Collins fan that I am, I have to defend my guy! I believe he tried to play more honest to the recordings, especially coming right off the plane & with no rehearsal. But they also had the late great Tony Thompson (Chic, Power Station), who was playing everything too fast--and maybe that was by design as he probably didn't want Phil stepping in and taking away his lead. Then of course, Jimmy Page was zonked out of his mind and maybe Plant was a bit too. If Phil had his way, he would've played for everyone that day, and in the 80's he did play for just about everyone with excellent results. I just wish he had let these guys bomb on their own, but is there any rock drummer who would say no to playing with these guys if offered the chance?

Actually, Tony did indeed join LZ in late 1985/early 1986. He apparently did 8 new tracks with LZ at Bron-Yr-Aur studios with them but Jimmy decided to shelve the project after Tony was involved in a car wreck later that year. Jimmy still has those master tapes.

Collins and Thompson both kept missing ques. That second solo from Page was not intended to be a solo, that was supposed to be the final rave up to end the song, but when he realized they weren't with him on that he played it off like it was a solo. At that point, they were in a bit of trouble - the song was supposed to be over. Plant just vamped with "oh yes..oh yes..oh yes..finally Page turns completely around to both drummers to indicate to them emphatically that this final bit is the END! This is not a solo!

If I could have walked off, I would have. That day the tempos were all over the place, and it may have seemed like it was my fault, because I was the one who hadn't rehearsed, but I would pledge to my dying day that it wasn't me.
