    When I had to sell my Ranger I bought a Hobie PA 14 360 and in my opinion they are the best. And you got the right color. The drive is amazing. The storage, stability and much much more. You made the right decision.

    I almost bought the Blue Sky Boatworks pro 360 just for the over all deck space but this is so much more practical for fishing tournaments for me. The 360 was big but I love the horizontal rod storage. There is not much you can't love on this kayak.

    I'm not a good fisherman and I don't get out much anymore but I've gone through a couple of kayaks (Vibe and a Feelfree Moken) and I was just modifying them and spending money and finally I just sold them and I was thinking I might just get a boat but now I am thinking that a boat may be way off in the future, so I am thinking of getting a Hobie. The PA looks like it is everything a fisherman would want. Thanks for sharing!

    Great camera work, good editing, very informative. As far as the money and is it worth it. Time will tell if spending that much is worth it. For those that bought Hobie many years ago and it is still in great working order then there is the real story on value to me. Considering the resale value then that sets Hobie apart.

    Love the new Kayak, I am in the market for new kayak, currently fishing a Jackson big rig but as you said age is moving in, my biggest problem is getting from the seated position to the standing position, can’t find any seat height risers so I was wondering on the 360 how is it getting from the seated position to the standing position? I’m like you I’m 6.3 about 260 and it is a pretty good task getting from the CD position to standing so stable ability and ease of standing would be my next two main concerns in buying a kayak . I appreciate your detailed review of this kayak. I am 6'6 and 270 and not sure which kayak would be best for me. From looking online and looking at many pictures, it looks like the kayaks with a trolling motor in front of the seat have the most room for my super long legs. Thank you for the information.

  • @the45er
    @the45er Pƙed 3 lety +7

    This is a great review. I own an Old Town Sportsman 120 and love it. If someone was going to GIVE me the OT or THIS Hobie, I might take the Hobie. However, the only thing I really, really like about the Mirage drive over the PDL is it's ability to deal with weeds. Obviously, a propeller-driven drive is a hindrance although I've found that it takes me less than 15 seconds to free the prop when it does get fouled. This Hobie does have some great features for sure. However, it costs MORE THAN TWICE AS MUCH as my Old Town. I personally can't see that much advantage but that's just me. I'm also very curious about your statement about being tired after 4-6 miles peddling your Predator. I'm 71 and I know I'm not in as good a shape as you are and I routinely fish in my OT for 8+ hours and paddle 5-6+ miles doing it. I've never suffered any fatigue in doing it. Oh well, like I said, you've got a great boat there. Stay safe and tight lines!

    • @chuckgilbert2035
      @chuckgilbert2035 Pƙed 2 lety +2

      I am replying to this because of the statement of the author being tired in the 5 mile range. I am 69 years old and going to do this to keep mobility. So for those of you that know is it his seat height in the OT pedaling bicycle that cause the physical problem or is it really easier to pedal the fin type drives long term? As for the 360 drive from what I have heard it is more complex therefor problematic and costly to repair. I do not own a kayak yet so not expert advise just questions. answers welcome.

    • @hardrockminer-50
      @hardrockminer-50 Pƙed 2 lety +2

      @@chuckgilbert2035 I'm 71 and have a heavy 12 ft Malibu (I would not recommend it)PADDLE kayak. It's about 80 pounds without the seat. I can still load it on top of my pickup camper by myself. A 2 mile paddle at 2 mph is a good workout.
      I'm considering getting a lighter weight sit in for touring around with Wifey. She has a 10 ft Pelican. Cheapest Costco had several years ago. She out runs me. I can throw her kayak over my shoulder and carry a paddle in the other hand.
      If you're just getting into kayaking, I'd suggest renting a few, if you can, to see what fits your strength and ability and waters you will paddle. This Hobie weighs well over 100 lbs and probably needs a trailer to transport it. It's just a notch below a jon boat...

      Buying multiples is a common theme. After using an Ocean Kayak tandem for fishing with my daughter for awhile, she finally proclaimed she wished her own boat. Having found ourselves off shore a number of times, I had confidence in her track and x-country legs to get her home with the then new Hobie Mirage peddle boats. Walked into the dealer intending to buy one for her, walked out with two, pricey at the time, but the enjoyment of the numerous trips we’ve had are amount the memories of my life and the expense would have been worth it even if doubled or tripled.

      After two tournaments, a river float, and a couple of plinking around trips - it is still as awesome as I thought it would be. Mirage drive is so silly efficient, it feels like your peddling a kayak half the size. 360 is clutch, you can do some crazy stuff with it. Make the kayak move in ways I didn't think kayaks could move. Down side it is one heavy mug. I think a lot of that will be remedied when my H-Cart comes in.

    To give folks a perspective on someone who has had a Hobie for a while, I have a 2017 Pro Angler 12 that I estimate I have over 600 miles on (200+ in 2021 so far). The Hobie gear is expensive, but one big plus in my book is that it is all very well engineered and constructed. All the little details in the kayak are well thought out and rugged. I think you could beat the crap out of it and have a hard time breaking anything. The stability and comfort is also great. Other than the cost, the only other downside for me is the weight. I exclusively use mine from my dock where it lives full time and don't spend any time hauling it around. If you were trying to load this onto a car top all the time, I suspect it would get to be old pretty fast.

    Love the new Kayak!! Congratulations!! I haul my Old Town kayak in back of truck. How difficult to get in and out? Is the wheel setup convenient when coming out of water? Why 14 vs 12? Thanks

    • @AlexRuddFishing
      @AlexRuddFishing  Pƙed 3 lety

      It's heavy but actually lighter then my AP. Waiting on my wheels. They are on back order. I went 14 because in my experience you always regret going smaller then bigger.

      @@scottquesada4697 you wouldn’t be disappointed with a Titan 13.5 either in terms of stability, I mainly fish out of a Slayer Max 12.5 myself, and I’m a middle aged fat guy and can stand while fishing with not issue. The Titans are more stable than it. The biggest advantage to the Hobie kayaks are the fin drives don’t tangle up with weeds and grass easily like the prop style drives do.

    360 drive is great but it is a relatively new technology and I've had some issues. Hobie took care of the issues, but I had two 360 steering failures. I think I had some bad belts or something. Been working well after the repeated repairs and part replacements, again while under warranty and they were on it.

      I would think the big difference would be the seat. Hobie has so much more adjustment for comfort , I love the idea of the autopilot , it can also store fishing holes or even take you back to launch point if you do not know the area. With spot lock you have 360 steering too , just do not have to pedal

    I like my Old Town 106 PDL. I like a lot of the aspects of that Hobie but the price is just not justified imo. I struggled to justify $2K on my Sportman 106 PDL. Before haters say I can't afford it, I have NO debt and can afford it. Maybe if I lived somewhere like Florida and fished daily then I could justify it? Currently I live in MI and 6+ months out of the year the water is covered in ice. I do like the 360 drive and how you can move your yak any direction a lot! Nice boat!

    It looks like a great fresh water kayak for a river float with the 360 drive. I guess pulling the drive up when hitting small rapids is not an option, just have to careful where you take it. It has an awesome hull design, and could really work well off shore just like the Predator PDL. Time will tell. No you did not waste 5000. bucks as long as it does what you want it to do.Tight lines bro!

    I've had a pa12 360 for a year and it's an awesome kayak, but...I've already broke a belt for steering the 360 drive and now the drive fell apart, the bearing rods all fell out and now I'm waiting for a drive replacement. I'm not sure the drive is of the highest quality or design, but it's awesome when its working correctly. I do not abuse or push the boat hard, but I have fished a lot of hours in the year that I've had it. I'm hoping Hobie has made some updates to the 360 drive, because I've read lots of comments online with other people having the exact same issues with their drives and belt. Hope your kayak holds up.
