    I have owned three different Hobie Pro Angler 14 kayaks. They are great boats and tremendous fishing machines. If you love fishing and want unfettered access to every place the fish live, then the Pro Angler is an awesome choice. However, no matter how great it is, there are always things that can be improved. As an experienced Hobie Kayak Fisherman, I layout the truly problematic items with this kayak. Hopefully this list will help you make the best decision for you. Also, be sure to check out the 10 Things I LOVE about the HOBIE PRO ANGLER 14 as well.

    I own the exact same boat, Mike Iaconelli red shark. I love this boat, I am 6’4 and weigh 250 pounds and it is soooo stable. The peddle drive allows me to peddle all day long and not get tired. I am 57 years old and can fish for hours in this thing. Yes it is heavy, but I own a truck and just slide it into the bed with little effort. I have fished four tournaments this year and managed to load and unload the yak by myself with little difficulty. Have had zero issues with the 360 drive, so far, love the drive. Never had such a maneuverable yak before, can turn on a dime. Would definitely recommend this boat.

      I totally agree. Without the 360 drive, there is no such thing as a quick turn from a dead stop. With the 360, I can essentially neutral steer or rotate the kayak without having to build up any speed.

    For horizontal rod storage the only time I use all three on either side is going offshore. It’s east to turtle in the surf. You won’t break rods if their horizontal. Also, I carry rods when I’m trailering. When I launch I have most of them in rod holders.
    Now that I’ve used the PA14, every time I get in my Outback, it feels cramped…almost tiny.
    I put the large rod holders in the molded in rod holders. Then water is not an issue.
    Every trip I spend time minimizing my load. It helps.

    I bought a Brooklyn Co kayak 13 ft and I'm very close to 150 lbs if not more. I have a trolling motor (under $200 to replace) where the foot peddles go the whole thing was $1600 on Amazon. Instant forward instant reverse swing it for any direction as well, so convenient and my jet ski trailer converted effortlessly. I also modified a swimming noodle to fit perfectly in the rod holders one push shoots out all the water when I get back and I have yet to find a drop of water in the sealed section and I found I don't need scupper plugs plus I installed a lovely rubber bottom that looks like teak and feels like a dr scholls insert. I have 11 rod holders none horizontal and I use floaties (stabilizers) behind my 48qt yeti cooler in a metal frame tied down behind my 5 and 7 gallon buckets behind the seat for cast net and bait well with bubbles. Your thoughts?

    Some thoughts from a previous Hobie PA 14 360 owner to go along with some of these points. If you have a truck bed and the scupper cart and also are a capable person loading and unloading this thing is pretty easy without a trailer. Also as far as it leaning to the right or the left by default, same for me and i was under the impression that was just the way these are. Rod storage is only manageable with small baitcasters / rods with small eyes if you are going to use all 3 per side. 100% agree about the paddling, this thing will straight up anger you if you paddle it due to the hull design. Reverse on the 360 is damn near instant even though you use your hand to do it, almost never did i get frustrated with the reversibility compared to a Sportsman 120. True this kayak catches the wind like a sail, granted the 360 drive almost negates the wind. Use a regular kayak with paddles or a prop drive if you think wind is still frustrating in this compared to other setups. The molded rod holders should have drainage, simple as that. Always take the paddle just in case the drive breaks but as long as u have room in the back the paddle will sit there without much frustration unless you bring your whole shed with you and if you do just buy a big jon boat.

  • @rogercollins3
    @rogercollins3 Před měsícem

    For the rod storage, just get the horizontal holder for the h-rail and put the butt your poles in that and strap in. Works great, but I only use the holders to keep an extra rod really handy, everything else goes in the h crate behind the seat. I like the cockpit to be clear of everything. Good review, I do agree with the rest of what you said. It's expensive, it's big, and it is heavy. I don't mind weight and length, but I do wish Hobie would knock some off the MSRP on these things. I'm running an older PA12 but really want the PA14. I don't think I'll get the 360 though, the 180 is fine for what I do, and I'll be putting a motor on it to boot.

      That's what I like about my Knarr, with their rod holders that work with the rid tube's it's much easier to nicely store the rods and keep them closer to the sides to keep as much deck space as possible

    Good points to consider before buying this kayak but I'm not hearing a lot of true cons. I know, they're just things you personally hate about it and that's fair.
    For the horizontal rod holder, there's an accessory that holds the butt end of each rod separately which sounds like you'd want. Even without it though, I'd rather have the holes up front to keep the tips apart than nothing at all, no?
    About the reverse issue... I think the pros of the mirage drive 180/360 far outweigh the lack of instantaneous reverse in traditional pedal drives. It seems like a nit pick to me to have to pull a cable or turn a dial.
    Price is definitely insane for what it is.

    • @attiumeyami417
      @attiumeyami417 Před 2 měsíci

      bro the price and weight are enough to steer most people away. 5-6k is a down payment for a new car or 5-6 months worth of rent thats quite a bit for a plastic kayak. only kayaks that usually reach that price range are carbon or composite kayaks made for expeditions or long distance paddling. the weight is huge as well. although hobbies tend to be on the heavy side but the pro angler is insane. as a guy who is in his 20s and fit I can say that to me it is a decent annoyance to throw this yak on the roof of my car. but for someone who is not fit like me or on the older side or has shoulder injuries..... this kayak basically becomes something that is gonna chill in the garage and gather dust. also it being a nightmare to paddle is hudge especially with the 360 drives that are known to fail......
      like imagine ur out in the middle of nowhere and the mirage drive breaks down.....yup ur gonna know what hell is when u got to paddle back and if ur in strong wind or current ur better off just attaching a line to a tree or anchoring and waiting for Mother Nature to stop being angry.

      @kobayashimaru8114 Před měsícem

      @@attiumeyami417 Yea I mentioned the insane price in my comment. I was mostly talking about feature-wise.
      Weight is certainly a potential issue for some but for able-bodied folks not a big one. If I can paddle my loaded canoe solo then I can handle a chunky kayak.

  • @user-eo1qq4xz8w

    I bought the PA14 in 2008 when it came out. Had three more since plus a PA12. There are quarries in my area that I couldn’t get the 14’s out because of weight. Tried the 180 drive on a lighter outback and it sucked lemons, plus it was a wet ride. Did my research and bought two Old Town Predators/bigwaters 132 with the PDL drives. Instant reverse rocks plus they are fast hulls. Caught a great sale at Austin Kayak. Loved the Hobies PA’s, hated the weight, and no reverse at the time. Love the Predator PDL’s. Been a few years now. Both drives are still rocking with original propellers too. Its a true fishing machine.

    Great video Thanks , I’m in the market for one of these , my main question for you, since you’ve owned three, which is the most reliable ?
    I’ve been told the 180 drive with turbo fins is the MR , on like a 2020 0r 2019 hull , I think it was , what are your thoughts ? Thanks

    • @MrBassTV
      @MrBassTV  Před 8 měsíci +3

      The 180 mirage drive is practically bulletproof. You will have fewer problems with it over the 360 drive. I wish I still had the 2019 hull. The newest models seem to have the most quality issues.

    Price and weight got me looking elsewhere for kayaks. I'm still looking though. Might settle with a Vanhunks Sauger 12' tandem. I have my 11 yr old who I want to take out with me. Not many brands making tandem kayaks for fishing. Hobie does have their compass duo and oasis, but they are too expensive and heavy.

    • @attiumeyami417
      @attiumeyami417 Před 2 měsíci +1

      if it dosent have to be a pedal kayak get a perception tandem. I had that one before I sold it to buy my adventure island. and it holds up just fine. if it has to be a pedal kayak just buy a used adventure island (half or less than half of what the PA costs) and u can put trampolines on it (sometimes owner sells the trampolines with the yak) and ur son can sit on the trampolines. with the added bonus that u can sail it. AI is heavy but dosent weigh anywhere near as much as the pro angler and its manageable.

    When you spend six thousand dollars on a kayak, you would expect to have a worry-free piece of equipment. I believe Hobie is just trying to push these out as fast as they can and making changes to quality/quantity of materials to save money. Profit margin thinking is their bottom line. They should take a look at Canadian canoe companies that put out top notch product 99 percent of the time. I was seriously looking into Hobie (ie. why I'm watching this video review) but I believe I will be looking somewhere else.

  • @attiumeyami417
    @attiumeyami417 Před 2 měsíci

    as someone who owns both a pro angler and adventure island I can confidently say that both can be roofed on a sedan sized car...... but ur gonna hate ur life. best way to roof the pro angler is to utalize a kayak cart and utilize ratchet straps to strap it down to the trunk (other wise cart will slip off) and place a mat or piece of flat plywood under the cart to evenly distribute the weight on the trunk before ratcheting it down. this will greatly decrease the risk of denting the trunk. then take the kayak and put the bow (front of the boat) on the cart and use the wheels to get the kayak on top as u push from the back of the kayak. this will work on most sedans that have a traditional trunk however if u have a trunk that resembles an egg or oval shape ur kinda screwed.
    I do not recommend this boat for anyone that isn't willing to deal with the main 4 issues this man mentioned especially the weight and transportation part. cause ultimately the price is somewhat negotiable u can just buy it on craigslist or buy a pro angler 12 (much cheaper) but theres nothing u can do about the weight and transport. u either got the muscle and youth to put it on top of the car or u got a cargo van or trailer to transport it. for anyone not meeting either of the requirements I would definetly steer them to a revolution or outback. shure not as nice as the pro angler but atleast you can use it and won't be just a fancy toy gathering dust in your garage

    lmao ! i love my pa 14 and yes sir its heavy but it is so slippery on metal. i have a short bed with a load extender to haul it and i had to wrap the cross bar with foam so it would stay up there while i went to the rear to push it up on the truck but absolutely after a long day of fishing i dread having to load it! I am considering getting a trailer, but my only complaint is i bought the railblaza ctug if i had to cart it to the water and let me tell you i don't care how tight i get it just doesn't perform if it hits a pebble. i dropped kicked it into the brush and had a friend help me carry it. might still be there on the trail down to emerald bay on Tahoe if someone wants it.
