Trip to the DMZ | Imjingak + Cafe with a View of North Korea VLOG
VloĆŸit

- Hi everyone! I decided to take a rather long trip from Seoul up to the DMZ to visit Imjingak, which is where you can see a few really interesting artifacts from the Korean War along with the Peace Nuri Park. There are lots of English signs so even if you don't go with a tour, you can learn a lot. It's a great day trip if you've never been to the border. Sorry this vlog was a lot of me talking but I didn't want it to be all video clips of the signs hehe Thanks for coming along as always~

You know, I love hearing about really positive encounters with total strangers. It just fills me up with such happy vibes even though I wasn't there :)
heheheh i love hearing other peoples encounters too!
You go to such cool places I wouldn't even know about otherwise, my Korea bucket list grows everytime you make a video haha
this was a seriously lucky find!
True!!!
I admire your confidence to go out and do things by yourself, I really wish to muster up the courage to do the same
Thank you! It took a lot of practice:)
Very interesting concept having a café right beside North Korea. It kinda feels like a friend sitting next to someone who doesn't want to talk at the moment, but will always be there and wait until they are ready? (very weird analysis lol) but made me happy to see! :')
Tip for everyone who wants to visit the DMZ: take the DMZ train operated by korail! We drove straight to dorasan station and it was an overall really nice experience and cheap as well. We were on a tour bus, saw everything from the 3rd tunnel to the dora observatory :)
yessss!!
i really admire how you always do stuff on your own, whether it be little adventures like going to a coffee shop alone or bigger adventures like this dmz experience. like teach me your ways i can't even go get some coffee in a coffee shop if i'm alone, let alone stay at the place for longer than the time it takes to order haha
thank you!! it took me a long time to get to this level hahaha
Iâve never seen footage from the border of North and South Korea thank you so much for sharing Cari! đđ»
thanks for watching^^~
I went to Panmunjom when I was in Korea in 1974/75. I saw the Bridge of No Return. Memories.
I love your Korea videos. My father was stationed in Korea 4 times with the first time being during the Korean Conflict.
Thank you so much, and wow! Weâre thankful for his service!!
Your Father is a hero. Thank You for Your father and Wish you and your family luck. Greetings from Seoul.
I admire how you created this video, it wasn't too serious and it also wasn't touristy or not taking it seriously, so props to you as alwaysđđŒâșïž
I totally agree :)
thank you!!!
Next year when I go study abroad in Korea, I will definitely check this place out! This semester I had a course called Modern Korean History and it was so interesting, especially how North and South Korea came to be and the role of international forces etc, so the DMZ is a place that is definitely on my places-I-want-to-visit list :) oh and thank you for recommending locations at the DMZ that are a little bit less crowded, since a very touristy, crowded place would probably not give me the same/full experience as less crowded areas would probably do, so yeah thank you!
there are a lot of really interesting places to see that require a tour guide which i do recommend but its great that theres a free option as well :) hope your time abroad is amazing!!
Imagine you work in a cafe and have to look at that fence that divides your country all day long.
It amazes me how they still manage to create such a friendly and light atmosphere! :)
Also, have a great trip to America!! :D
i agree! and to see people from all over the world come to look through the fence :/ thanks for watching!!
This should NOT be demonitized. It's respectful and relevant. This site is symbolically crucial to Koreans in each side of the border. Learning a bit about is helpful to visualize the reality of such a unique political issue. It brings Korea closer to us viewers, nothing wrong about it.
luckily they took back their demonetization but yeah, i wish 'north korea' wasnt an automatic trigger word. gah!! thank you so much!
the pinwheel part with the kids and the photographer made me smile :) such a cute and fun video!!
I saw a BBC piece about the DMZ a couple of years ago and since then it has been high on my to visit places when I go to Korea! Iâm so glad you got to go and film for us. Thank you!!!
i love the time you upload, when im eating breakfast and open youtube and see you got a new video for us, my day gets 300% better
omg yay!! hope the day was good :)
It's so weird how it seems so different to other places I've been to or seen in Korea. Thanks for taking the time to film. It's great being able to see a different side of the DMZ to what is usually filmed and available on CZcams. I truly appreciate the fact that you seem to always find quirky places or at least, out of the real touristy spots.
Aww, taking a picture with the little lady - that's so sweeeeet :D I love those kind of encounters.
thank you always! im bummed i didnt ask for her photo too hahah
I remember those beautiful earrings, what a perfect day to wear them! You make an uneasy place seem so serene and kind.
thankyou! and yeah, that cafe did a really amazing job at making an odd situation a little more calm.
It's midnight here in England and I am going to keep this video for tomorrow morning because watching your videos when I wake up always make me so happy! Thank you for all your hard work! đ§Ą
wahhh thank you! sweet dreams!!
I'm korean. It looks meaningful travel! Thanks for your visiting and S. Korea is very peaceful country and has a lot of things that you guys can enjoy!
thank you for watching!
Your videos always bring such joy in to my life. Never stop making them.
The history between North and South Korea just seems so interesting and complex and sad đą This was really cool to see!
exactly :/ its great that this section is all focused on peace!
@@caricakes I agree! Seeing the field of pinwheels especially was making me emotional...
So interesting and yet so complex. In my humble opinion, N. Korea deserves more tourists coming in to see the country as it is, as it was labeled 'most harmonious place' on earth; especially with the decades-old U.S. and Western sanctions which caused over a million N. Koreans deaths in starvation in the past. I like to see peace and prosperity that the country richly deserves. blog.chinadaily.com.cn/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=785423
I need a âCari cakes visited this â list for the next year when Iâll move to Korea!
Your videos are always so soothing. Watching them is like drinking a huge mug of tea. Perfect way to start my day!đ
thank you always!!
Another great travel story! Honestly; the concept of "Cari goes to the DMZ" cracked me up just seeing the title. But the first stop was a Café, and everything conformed strongly from there on. Both comforting and slightly disappointing:-) For some reason the concept made me crave Cari-vlogs from Afghanistan ie "Kabul CafÚs" and "Tea with the Taliban" and such. Lovely! Would be a killer concept! But safety first:-)
the lovely encounter you had with strangers at the cafe really warmed my heart! such a fascinating place to visit, thank you for showing us some of it đwonderful vlog as always!
thank you so much!!

Itâs really funny you filmed the kids. One time I was in korea this spring, took a lot of nice videos in a park, and there was this super picturesque moment of kids running around in the park, and just as I was about to film them and the scenery, I realized how weird it looks from an onlookers perspective to film kids in public. So I didnât but it they look so happy and pleasant in your videos.
i try not to show close ups but i figured a stampede of kids is okay~ they're little blurs hahaha
Loved this vlog! Itâs so awesome that thereâs so many activities for foreigners to do there, and the fact that they add English translations puts a smile on my face :-)
thank you!! and i was really happy there was so much I could read there hahaha
How amazing to have a cafe at the edge of the dmz. When I visited in 2009 we were told we had to take an American army organized bus to get the tour and see the JSA. It would be so nice to visit the area without a huge group!
i agree!! there are still a lot of places that are tour-only but i love that this is easily accessible!
omg all these precious running BABIES SO CUTEEE
A big part of editing film is recreating the world as you see it and your take on Korea is just very different, and very "you."
Thank you so much!!! Iâm not sure when weâre heading up to LA but i will keep that in mind!!
Wonderful and very interesting vlog. Thank you. Maybe, it was the separation of one country in two countries as a parallel to the history of the country where I live or it was the atmosphere, but it made my cry, even though you tried to make it as joyful and light as possible. You can really catch the atmosphere of the surroundings in your videos and move sensitive people like me. :)
The story of the president gives me a very bitter sweet feeling. And you travelled 3 hours one way for the park! Inspires me to go GO exploring Switzerland too. :)
yes gooo!! do you know inky cherie? she lives in switzerland and just took a road trip to vienna - so jealous!
@@caricakes Nooo...I don't. I'm new to both youtube and Switzerland đ Will look her up
Love love love! So beautiful. Your positivity and brightness inspires me so much! Thank you for showing me Korea! Love from Texas.
thank you so much!!
Hello! I'm heading to Korea by the end of this summer and your vlogs are really helpful. It was just yesterday when I was looking information for de DMZ, so (for me) it has been a really cool coincidence that you just post that vlog. I really (really) enjoy your content of your channel not only for de korea vlogs, but mostly for the way that you are and how you see the things around you. You really inspire positivity all over the place. And, I also enjoy your point of view through the camera., so yeah, keep doing what you do, as long that you are happy :)
thank you so much! i hope you enjoy your trip and that you get a little taste of autumn weather too ;)
I've been catching up on your last videos and I realised you've been a great inspiration to start doing things like travelling abroad or even going to cafes on my own so thank you so much for that đđ It's so great to see that you're still finding super interesting things to see even after a few years in the same country (and that you always end up in the coolest coffee shops everywhere you go what kind of super power is that ???). I wasn't expecting the DMZ to be so beautiful and I didn't even know much about it ! I'm so glad you're sharing all this history and culture with us, so until I'll make it to South Korea and see it all for myself, thanks Cari đđ
thank YOU so much!! and the cafe thing isnt a super power, its just that korea is overflowing with aesthetics hahahaha thank you again!!
I hope the issue with YT silly demonetization policy is resolved! Awesome video such good cinematography!!!!
same!! and thank you!
Such a nice video! The Café seems to be very cozy and it definitely has a interesting location. Gotta have to check these places out when I'm back on Korea in summer! :) thanks for taking us along
thanks for joining me heheh
the way you talk and feel about living in another country and the experiences youâve had with its culture remind me so much of myself. love this one! â€ïž
đđđ
It makes me happy to watch your vlogs! â€ïž
thank you so muuuuch!
Your videos are always the best. I always have such a warm feeling when I finish watching them! Sorry if you get told this a lot, but please consider doing a Seoul meet up in the Summer season. I know a lot of study abroad students who would love to meet you, including me! Thank you for brightening my day, Cari! âĄ
Amazing place!âš Even divided, Korea is such a beautiful country, filled with incredible history! Canât wait to visit one day.
Definitely will visit ìì§ê°!
thanks for watching!!
Iâm just now catching up on your last few videos ahhh Iâve missed watching you! But omf those lovely people at the cafe đ I really enjoyed this vlog as usual!!
thank you as always!! i wish i got a photo with them hahahha
What a wild time you had at that cafe!! đ These kind of interactions are truly priceless and unforgettable. LOVE the song choices for this video; your content is always so interesting to watch - I learn more and more about Korea with each upload, and I couldnât be more grateful for your channel.
Thank you always đ i was genuinely scared i was going to have a caffeine overdose hahhahahha
youâre so adorable!! you have the greatest personality. i sooo look up to you!! iâm so glad iâve found your channel, such great content i didnât know i needed! youâre so positive and happy and it radiates âš
oh my goodness thank you so much!!! ahh!!
This is a great video that I think will inspire people to visit the border for educational purposes, even though itâs hard to think about North Korea. You did a great job showing how to have a peaceful day reflecting on the history between the two countries. â€ïž
its definitely more complicated than i can even imagine but im so glad there were so many resources here to learn from!
Thanks so much for sharing! The cafe looks great, the park looks lovely and you can learn many things!
thanks for joining hehe
that cafe is awesome! free drinks yay!! ahaha the view from there is beautiful but at the same time it makes me really sad... :(
the dmz is definitely a place to visit!
there was soooo much coffee hahhah and i agree, really complicated feelings :/
I think its amazing that you did this video just now because I'm currently visiting Korea the first time (i commented one of your previous videos not so long ago and asked what to wear/how is the weather etc) and I just came yesterday from that exact location! đ± Was so nice to see the places again from your beautiful and calming video while enjoying my morning coffee đ I was on a booked trip and we also went to the 3rd tunnel.. And few days ago i also went to the Seoul Forrest but i had already seen your picnic video from there đ
omg thats awesome!! its fate hahah and arent the tunnels crazy?! i went in the middle of summer and when we got to the bottom we were freezing!!
I absolutely love your vlogs
Hi Cari! Only found your channel recently and i'm flying through your videos!! đ€© I'm so fascinated by Japan and Korea... And really interested in learning more! Thank you for your videos
I love how subtle you are pointing at the history of the two Koreas, yet showing the beauty of the country that shouldn't be overlooked.
It's getting hot here in Europe, too. A little too hot for my taste... lol.
thank you! and yeah, its officially becoming to hot for me hahah
Thank you so much for such a calming vlog again đ
thank you always^^~
Your videos are so pleasantly calming đ
thank you so much!
your videos just make me happy
Thank you for another amazing vlog!! I had no idea you could even visit the border so this was really cool to watch ! If I ever visit Korea this would definitely be on my to-do list :))
Thanks for watching!! You should definitely visit!
How is it possible that all of your videos are sooooo peaceful, easy to simply watch and enjoyđđ
You're doing such a great job, plz continue making such nice videos!
thank you so much!!
Iâve never heard of this place! Have been trying to think of things to do before leaving Seoul. This seems like a better alternative to visiting the DMZ meeting rooms that people usually think of. Thanks for sharing!
This is so enlightening. Also the bit at the end with the South Korean president... So intriguing! So surreal.
Cari, your videos make my day đthank you!!
thank you so so much!
I loved watching this! I got to see some details I missed out on when I was there. I visited the DMZ in April but it was all organized by this tour organization and it was sooo rushed. We only had a short 30(!!!) minutes at Imjingak. I just quickly took some photos of the main highlights like the freedom bridge but I would've loved to actually sit down and have a cup of coffee there and, like you did, talk to some locals. I didn't get to see the park either ă ă ă Next time I'm just gonna go there by public transportation!
my tour was totatlly a blur too, im so glad they opened this up to people without a tour guide!!
thank you for all of the signs!!! i paused every single one to read (and wow! the history is so interesting!!)
Im so glad!!!!
The history between Korea. It just seems so interesting and complex and sad but this was really cool to see!âșïžđ„ș
You always takes us places to show a different bit of Korea every time! It looked beautiful specially the 'wind hill' with all the paper windmills!
P.s. i hope your thumb is okay. I saw a bandaid or...?
thanks for always coming along :) and it wasnt a huge deal, just a hang nail or something i didnt want to keep hitting so i threw a bandaid over it haha
Those pins that they had of the South Korean flag with the flag of another country were so cool (My brother wants one as do I đ)
i loved how they had so many countries!!
I donât get why CZcams ainât treating you right, but we love you and your videos. The stranger story was so cute! The DMZ and North Korea is definitely something that gives me weird feelings as well. Also, I love how âbabiesâ can be such a vague term, but no matter the accuracy they fill me with joy!
thank you so so much!!! and omg im so bad with ages for kids so if they cant speak full sentences yet, they're babies hahahha
I love your vids there both calming and funnyđ
I love your earrings so much! I can't stop looking at them! - also envious of all that coffee
I love them!! Thank you heheh
@@caricakes you're welcome!
Thank you so much for this vlog! When I was in Seoul I didn't have enough time to visit the DMZ and I thought that it was only possible with a guided tour đ So next time it will definitely be on my to-do-list!
i totally thought it was only by tour too so im glad this is more open to the public :)
I learned soo much from your vlog! They are also always peaceful to watch haha
im so glad!! there was so much to read i didnt even film half of it!!!
I need to do this next time I visit. Seeing the kids run down the hill was so cute!
they were the stars of this vid hahahhaa
beautiful video as always cari â„ïž thank you
thankYOU!
korean history is rly interesting and i would love to take a tour of the places :) as a korean i would love to learn more about my history as well :D
i was really happy they had so many free resources around the area because usually to see other parts of the dmz you need a tour guide (paid) - this is a great learning opportunity for free!!
The interactions you had with the cafĂ© owner as well as the photo lady... so cute! đ Watching your video brings back memories from when I went there. ⥠I agree that there's such a particular feeling being there near the border between South and North Korea. It's kind of bittersweet, to me at least.
definitely bittersweet, especially with all the peace monuments. thanks for coming along!
Best present after finishing my exams đItâs interesting how just a simple fence separate both countries so different one from another. By the way, love your earrings
i agree, its a really odd feeling - and congrats on your exams ahhhh!!!!
Soooooo cozy and peaceful
đđđ
The best content in CZcams
gah! thanks hahah

Thank YOU!!
Always so informative. Thank you.
thanks for watching!
When I went to Korea last summer I didn't go to the DMZ with my friends because it gave me a weird feeling ??? but watching your video I kinda want to explore this area now !
Also I love how everyone is really nice to you, I think it's because of your positive attitude :)
yeah its a lot to take in but theres so much to learn!! thank you!!
Giving me so much travel inspo for my move to SK this August! Such a cool vlog đ
yay!!! hope your trip is amazing and the rainy season ends before you arrive!
cari cakes aw thanks! Iâll be there for 13 months so will get all weathers thankfully!
your occasional ramblings were so funny (like the parking lots in america... so true)! i went to imjingak and dorasan last summer but i didn't have time to go to the peace park so it was cool to see that!!!
hehe thank you! i was a really pretty park, im so glad the made it!
Loved this video!! You are so positive and happy. It made me happy too (-:
Also, I never thought Iâd be this person but I bet you will be such a sweet and precious mother (or if you donât want to have kids then possibly aunt to other kids in your family)!
Iâm about your age and people always ask me when my fiancĂ© and I are going to have kids and it always makes me feel weirdđ I donât mean to be weird you just act so cute when you saw the kids at the parkđâ€ïž
Hope your time back here in the States is going wellđ
Omg hahhaa yeah Iâd def want to be an aunt - i love kids but not my own pls đđđ and thank you so much!!
Pleasant, informative video! Thanks, cari! And don't worry abou the numbers, what matters is that you have a loving audience and your message always reaches usđ€ I'm planing to visit S. Korea at the end of the month. I think DMZ will be on my list alongside Murakamis book cafes (I think he'd appreciate the weird junction I just did heređ )
thank you so much always ahhhh and omg YES! peter cat is the best!!
sweet~ adding this to my next solo trip to korea, love learning abt korean history âĄÌ
you learn a TON here!!
I love your channel âĄ
thank you so much!
Such an interesting place to visit! And I love how its not just a militarized place its so beautiful. I postponed watching your video for today because again I was up at 2 am when I saw your notification! đđ
Edit: The windmills though â€ïžđŹïž
i really love how focused on peace it is, its a great place to visit!! and ahhhh thank you!
The kids are so cute!
Loooooooove it! đđđ
thank you!!!
I visited the dmz last time I went! I went into that underground tunnel and it was so freaking steep. Literally thought I wasn't going to make it back up, so embarrassing huffing and puffing my way up haha
omg yes!! i went during summer and when i got to the bottom of the tunnel i was FREEZING hahahahhaha
Always so happy watching your vlog... that photographer though.... lmao đ€Ł
he was cracking me up!!
I buy my dad a magnet everytime I travel somewhere :) so he has magnets from many different countries and cities on his fridge :D it's our thing ;)
they're fun gifts for sure!!! there were lots of magnets here too~
@@caricakes It's nice bc my dad gets a little present to say that I thought of him, and it releases me from a craving of buying souvenirs for myself :P With all my travels over the years I ended up accumulating too much useless crap lol. No more!
Hey Cari! Loved this vlog! Where is your cardholder with the key chain from? Love from Germany! :)
Thanks for showing us other side of Korea.
Such lovely people in South Korea ..
I'll be traveling to Seoul this October for a layover on my way to japan and I'm going to book a tour to the DMZ
Hello mam ceri thnk you for vlog in imjigak im planning to go here via bike from gimpo..hope to see here in korea godbless
what a happy start of my wednesday, thank u cari!! xx
im finally planning a trip to south korea in october but i cant for the life of me never understand the climate there around that time. what do you recon? i am from finland so it's quite chilly that time but i guess i need to binge watch your videos again from october ^_^
omg october is my favorite time!! it will start becoming chilly but i think by finland's standards it might not be that cold hahah it only starts getting really cold in november!
Hello from Los Angeles~ nice people surround themselves with nice people lol.
hi from san diego hehe im visiting family right now so we're neighbors!!
My parents didnât let me go to korea this year cuz they are scared of it and I think itâs partly bc of North Korea but look at how peaceful everything is... amazing.. but here I am living in Miami Florida the state where a school shooting happened, XX got shot, and so many more dangerous things... those who donât know will never understand South Korea, the beauty, the peace, the safety much respect this is what makes me like korea even more not the Kpop or Kdrama
exactly, daily life here is so much safer than that at home in the us :/ so sad
Riya South Korea is a very safe and incredibly developed and literate country. A lot of older folks have a hard time understanding this, but one of my favorite things that Cari mentions is that she noticed that she has never experienced catcalling in S. Korea! And look at how often she wanders around in public on her own! NK and SK are two very different places. I hope you are able to find information that helps your parents understand this! I would start by watching K Dramas on Netflix that are subtitled, to give them a chance to see that their world is very similar to ours, and itâs a pretty fun way to introduce people to Korean pop culture. My favorite one to recommend is called Letâs Eat. Iâm pretty sure itâs on Netflix right now. Itâs kind of a drama/comedy. Anyway Iâve been rambling now but good luck!! đ
Mall_rat 3000 thank you so much!! Yes I watch Kdramas as well but itâs hard to make the elder generation understand.. South Korea will always be painted a certain way. And I canât change that :( I hope my parents understand and I get to go soon.. thanks again for the tip!!
cari cakes and it eats me alive every time I hear my mom say â if I send you idk if you will come back aliveâ Iâm sure I have more of a chance coming back alive when in in Seoul compared to downtown Miami where prostitution, drugs, drunks are chilling literally you can smell weed as you walk down the streets.. I hate that they judge :( I envy you!!
