The Fugitive is an American drama series created by Roy Huggins. It was produced by QM Productions and United Artists Television. It aired on ABC from 1963 to 1967. David Janssen stars as Richard Kimble, a physician who is falsely convicted of his wife's murder and sentenced to receive the death penalty.
En route to death row, Kimble's train derails over a switch, allowing him to escape and begin a cross-country search for the real killer, a "one-armed man" (played by Bill Raisch). At the same time, Dr. Kimble is hounded by the authorities, most notably by Police Lieutenant Philip Gerard (Barry Morse).
The Fugitive aired for four seasons, and a total of 120 51-minute episodes were produced. The first three seasons were filmed in black and white; the final season was in color. The Fugitive was nominated for five Emmy Awards and won the Emmy for Outstanding Dramatic Series in 1966. In 2002, it was ranked No. 36 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.
TV Guide named the one-armed man No. 5 in their 2013 list of The 60 Nastiest Villains of All Time.
The series premise was set up in the opening narration, but the full details about the crime were not offered in the pilot episode, which started with Kimble having been on the run for six months, being on the way to the "Death House" when the train crash happened, after 18 months in prison, having exhausted all appeals. - Zábava
"The Fugitive" is my favorite television show of all time. I taped the entire series commercial-free in chronological order when the reruns were shown on A&E many years ago. I cry for Richard Kimble in the two-part episode called, "The Judgment," when he finally catches up with Fred Johnson, the one-armed man, who is shot and killed by Lt. Gerard. I love the ending when Dr. Kimble leaves the courthouse, shakes hands with Lt. Gerard and watches a parking police car, knowing he no longer has to fear the police. "Tuesday, August 29th...the day the running...stopped!"
"The Fugitive" was one of my favorite TV shows from the 60's. I never missed an episode.. Television was really good back then.

It needs to be said especially now with the world completely different than back in the great 1960s and the young people who aren,t familiar with this historic television show, that The Fugitive television series and not the movie was The greatest drama series of all time and made A B C a major television network like N B C and C B S Period !!!!!

GREAT theme song. Excellent show. Never get tired of watching it. David Janssen was so perfect for the part. I can't imagine anyone else playing it so well. One of the most unique dramas ever produced.

Im 60 years old and remember watching the fugitive as a kid maybe 8 years old at the time and thru the years watching til this day this unique show , as we all know David made the show , he was a perfect fit and played the part so well , Im here still watching this great show , The Fugitive !

I adored this TV series and David Janssen. I remember watching this as a kid and feeling sorry for Richard Kimble when the episode was over every week. David Janssen's performance as Kimble was so convincing, you really felt the character was real. I just wished for him to stop running and have a happy life !...lol

I agree with you wholeheartedly now as an adult. I liked the show and character as a younger lad. But, it was beyond my full understanding, as this series was intended for an adult audience. David Janssen is exceedingly convincing as Doctor Kimble. I always wondered, how did he prepare for the role? I saw the so-called overblown movie reboot with Harrison Ford. Frankly, it did that appeal to me. Richard Kimble as an "action hero??" Come on. Best regards to you, June Lynn!
Yeah David Jansen did an awesome job But you know what I never saw all of them so what happened did he find his one arm now or did he get caught or what happened.

This is so true, I watched the entire series (120 episodes) in 95. It was top notch television.
I remember watching this when I was just a little boy in hospital recovering from operations and my dad taped this show on video in the sixties good times

I get to see it on ME TV. It comes on every Sunday night.
Call me cheesy if you like, but in my mind this theme song has come to epitomize hope and perseverance in the face of adversity.

I knew if the movie in the 90s when I was around 13. Then I found out about the show on THIS or ME TV. I heard about the finale being the most watched of all time till MASH. I watched practically every episode every sunday night with my parents and absolutely riveted.
The unmistakable voice of the narrator is William Conrad, who later had his own TV series in the 1970s as the star of the detective show Cannon in which he played the popular, overweight P.I. Frank Cannon.
Cannon also was Marshall Matt Dillion in the original Gunsmoke series of radio. And to top it off, he narrated Rocky & Bullwinkle, too!

Oh, I don't know about that. Shakespeare was very much of his time, and most of his plays were well written soap operas, full of overblown characters and absurd situations. If he was here, writing in modern English, he'd probably have several hit series on TV.

Every Tuesday night at 10p.m., the nation stopped and watched this outstanding drama. David Janssen was the perfect lead, and Barry Morse was excellent as the 'sinister' Lt. Gerard.

While hearing this theme song after all these many decades, I was hit with a powerful wave of nostalgia. It was almost palpable. I recall how me and my friends would discuss each episode the next day. This was a superbly developed show, and all the episodes ended on a very bittersweet note; Richard Kimble escaped another close call...

Barry morse was gerrard in the series(english actor),and bill raisch was the one armed man(who lost it in the korean/us battle!).
He had a natural gruff voice and his son appears in an episode and the final one!

Watch The Fugitive growing up with my parents & brother. It was my Mom favorite program. I recalled our neighbors across the street when they went on vacation.vthey saw the man who played Lieutenant Gerard. The neighbor wife told him he got the wrong man. Doctor Richard Kimbell is innocent.
Along with the theme, Composer Pete Rugolo was commissioned to score only 50 minutes of original music for the entire series, the other music used were stock CBS music cues (though the series was broadcast on ABC), but they are equally as memorable, reason that fans (myself included ) were so up in arms when they used those stupid replacement cues for the original DVD release of the series, glad that was remedied!
To those of us, fortunate to have been old enough to see television like this, we remember. Today, I do not even own a television and if it's not on my android phone, I do not see it.

The reason that UA did not get all the TV rights to _The Fugitive_ was because of the special contract devised by the show's creator, Roy Huggins (he had this idea after Warner Bros. Television had denied him his credit as the creator on shows like Maverick and 77 Sunset Strip).
UA's rights were thus limited, under this contract, only to the original broadcast run. Syndication by ABC Films (Worldvision Enterprises from 1973-1999, Paramount Domestic Television from 1999-2006, and CBS Television Distribution since 2007) and Warner Bros. as the studio for the 1993 film (and the 2000 TV series) were covered under those same special rights Huggins wrote in his contract.

It is that rare TV series that featured the the grittiness, the desires, the imperfections and the nobility of the common man. It was a series for serious, mature people open to moral instruction and moral reasoning. Made in a time before chain establishments, and before our imaginations and sense of reality were corrupted and stunted by too many video screens. A truly unique and remarkable series.

The funniest thing is that I was born in the 70s and had no idea that the 1993 film starring Harrison Ford was based on a TV show until I started reading reviews!
If I remade this series, the one thing I'd change is that we'd never be 100% sure Kimble was innocent. Keep the audience guessing until the last episode.

If you mean the Hulk TV show, then maybe. But Hulk began in the comics a year or so prior to the first season of The Fugitive.
Yep, I came here after someone mentioned the fugitive was the inspiration for 'lonely man'. I can see the similarities. I prefer the lonely man 'rewrite' much more. This piece has some splendid parts however. 3:05 for example is wonderful.

Some outstanding production elements have been lost. I like the impressionistic art work at the end has been lost in the TV production world today. And William Conrad's voice no more. Alas. I like Pete Rugolo's music. I like the original FBI theme a lot better though, It might be a theme and variations suite.
Ongoing narratives are the norm for modern television. In fact, it's a rarity to find a drama in episodic form, like The Twilight Zone or Star Trek. Back in the day, if you missed an episode, you could easily tune in the following week and not miss a beat. It had to be that way without recording devices. The Fugitive boldly asked - demanded, really - audiences to tune inevery single week. Yes, it told a different contained tale each episode, but the ongoing plot with the One-Armed Man and Lt. Gerard keep viewers on their toes. The network was initially skeptical to even try such a concept. It blazed a trail for similarly structured shows like The X-Files.

To any boomers curious about anime, I recommend the series "Monster" by Naoki Urasawa. It's way more like The Fugitive in tone and subject matter than something like Pokemon or Sailor Moon, etc. Monster is a classic Crime, Mystery, Psychological thriller, but animated.

We never missed an episode, although the ending was disappointing.
At that time, most of the Japanese loved Kimble's personality. However, when Japanese company invited David Jansen, he kept saying money, monay, money, really disappinted. I liked Barry Moth (spelling correct?), as well.

The timeline in the series is 6 years between Kimbles wifes murder, or 5 years ( length of series) or mentioned in the last season episodes of 3 years or 4 years?
Gerard said in interrogating the one armed man in the last episode that Mrs. Kimbles murder happened in September 1961. Trials usually take a year to to occur and months to complete. That would put Kimbles escape in late 1962 and his final freedom in September 1967.
So what is it?

Why can't today's young people and parents of school age kids be made to see this series? What's wrong with seeing quality television and a drama series like this to today's youth? I think that many people would agree that it is a great idea! Not caring about the past, and seeing how the world used to be and how people were is terribly wrong! Television especially from the great 1960s was really that good, but don't take my word for it but it is a proven fact Period!!!!!
Retro TV is an option on many cable packages. There are ways to see these old shows if the parents prioritize it. Most parents don't though. My parents sat and watched the shows that were popular at the time when I was a kid. Happy Days, The Six Million Dollar Man, Chips,.Laverne and Shirley, Kung Fu, Gunsmoke etc.
They didn't feel the need to have me watch reruns of the shows they grew up with. Why would today's parents be any different ?
