Hawaii Five-O is an American police procedural drama series produced by CBS Productions and Leonard Freeman. Set in Hawaii, the show originally aired for 12 seasons from 1968 to 1980, and continues in reruns. Jack Lord portrayed Detective Lieutenant Steve McGarrett, the head of a special state police task force which was based on an actual unit that existed under martial law in the 1940s.
The CBS television network produced Hawaii Five-O, which aired from September 20, 1968 to April 4, 1980. Currently, the program is broadcast in syndication worldwide. In the U.S., it airs on Me-TV, and via on-demand streaming media from CBS Interactive. (CBS also has uploaded every episode of this show via its CZcams account.)
Created by Leonard Freeman, Hawaii Five-O was shot on location in Honolulu, Hawaii, and throughout the island of Oahu as well as other Hawaiian islands with occasional filming in other locales such as Los Angeles, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
The theme music composed by Morton Stevens became especially popular. Most episodes would end with McGarrett instructing his subordinate to "Book 'em, Danno", sometimes specifying a charge such as "murder one." - Zábava

The young Hawaiian Boy at around 00:50 is my friend Mel Kinney (Rest In Peace). A great, humble and joyful Hawaiian surfer. He was invited to surf in the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational and he was a North Shore surfing legend. We worked together on the new Hawaii 5-0 and many other shows. He was an IATSE Local 665 member. He said he was hanging out near Waikiki/Diamond Head and they paid him $5 to take some shots of him. Mel was the best guy. Miss him.
Thanks for sharing! So many back stories about the people involved in these shows is what really makes it interesting.

I agree, Jack Lord's turn-around scene was the greatest intro to any instant inspiring moment!!!

Here it is October 29, 2021, and I still am enjoying the opening of Hawaii Five-0. I will never stop loving everything about this original TV show. I refused to watch the new version. I tried, but I just couldn't. The original show had everything, the best theme, great actors and actresses, the best story lines, and the best villain-Wo Fat. I visited the island of Oahu four times and I loved every minute of it. I would love to go back some day.
Linda, Jack Lord was my first-ever crush. I was 3 years old! lol. My mom loves to tell everyone how i would kiss the TV screen when he was on! lol. I own seasons 1-7 of the original on DVD and even have a Rick Rietveld 'Book 'Em Dano' Jack Lord t-shirt. The theme song is my cell ring tone as well. lol. I do love the reboot but the original is my fave
@@Stefanie2530 I love your story. Also, you remind me of my cousin when she was either two or three years old. She told her mother and me that she was in love with Steve McGarrett. She said he was her boyfriend because he was so handsome. We loved to get together and watch our favorite TV show.

Mort Stevens, the composer of this fantastic theme, was a man whose musical gifts were exceeded by only his kindness. When I was in college, I had the opportunity to hear Mort speak at a performance program at Walt Disney World. At the time, I was just starting to develop an interest in composition and he could not have been more supportive. After graduating, I moved to Los Angeles where he invited me to attend one of his recording sessions. Over lunch, he shared some of his experiences and thoughts about the creative process. What a special day that was. When he passed away, I was honored to receive an invitation to his memorial service, where I had a chance to share one of his letters to me with his widow. Thank you, Mort and Annie, for your warm welcome. I will forever be grateful to you both.
Thanks for sharing your story. I know you’ll never forget it.
Thanks. What a heart-warming story, indeed. God bless Morton Stevens for giving us one of the most iconic theme songs. What a good, decent man he must have been!

Love this.
This show had THE best opening montage of any show ever. Great theme song, too. Well done. VERY FEW shows even came close to what they did.
Only The Sopranos has such a recognizable theme song and opening montage. I totally agree. I remember never wanting to miss the opening of Five-O. It just set the tone for the entire show. And being in Hawaii which most of us had never seen at that time, made it so entrancing

Most exciting theme music ever!! Makes me remember the great episodes of The Original Hawaii Five O and the original Steve McGarret!! Rest in peace Jack Lord. You will always be remembered.
My other faves include Mission:Impossible and Peter Gunn!
The more I discovered about John Joseph Patrick Ryan (Screen name Jack Lord) who played Steve McGarrett (in the original Hawaii Five O) I very much appreciate being able to watch all the series when I want. Superb theme music. fantastic scenery, lovely weather, beautiful women, great story lines. What's not to like. Jack Lord gave over a decade of his life to this series. No wonder he stayed in Hawaii when it was over. When he was fell ill (much later on in his life) it is said he liked to watch the sunset and sunrise with his wife. I like knowing that. Lovely thing to do.

For me Jack Lord was the best possible actor for the main character of this show. He acted really well, and at times one actually could believe the show was truth. His helper was also good.
Can't think of a better theme and intro than this in all of TV history. I listen to this every once in a while, even after so many years
Lord knows how many millions in tourism money this show and opening theme song/shots brought Hawaii. Many Islanders were concerned when the show 1st debuted that it would be focused too much on the negative aspects of Hawaii but by the time the show ended Jack Lord developed cult like status among the people of the state. They absolutely loved him and the show.
It was a very common popular travel destination in the seventies, that's for sure.

I was attending graduate school at the U. Of Hawai’i and met Jack Lord when he was filming the pilot for “5-0” . We had just become a state 9 years earlier!
@Connie Crawford
When did the filming for the pilot of Hawaii 5 0 take place at?
Mar. 5, 2020 @ 8:40 pm
SOCORRO SILVA Ot premiered on Tv in the fall of 1968 and ran for 12 years until 1980. I didn’t memorize the date because he was a relatively unknown actor who starred in a TV series about a rodeo clown called “ Stoney
Burke” which had already been cancelled but was still running already filmed episodes which had not been shown on TV yet. I actually went up to him and told him how much I liked his series “Stoney Burke “ and he told me the series had already been cancelled. ( Oops!) and he was filming a pilot for a new series about the Hawaiian state Police to debut in September of 1968. Hawaii has warm weather all year round so it was probably Jan- Feb of 1968. The network bought the pilot and ordered more episodes and put it on Tv that September of 1968. In those days, all Tv shows had new and old shows “ debut in the fall and summers were always devoted to reruns episodes of the TV shows. There were no Tsing devices available to the public so, if you missed an episode, you had to wait around until “ summer rerun season” and hope you could catch the episode you missed when it originally aired. The network only did 3 months of reruns from a 9 month of episodes , so you might never see an episode you missed. In those days, we were afraid to leave the house if we wanted to see all the episodes! Lol! Many of our families couldn’t afford a TV until we were in elementary school and then only back and white TV series were available! When color TV became available, our families all rushed to be the first in the neighborhood to buy this “modern technology”.. Do you watch old black and white episodes of “ I Love Lucy”, the Andy Griffith show, etc. Those shows were not filmed in color until the early 1960s or so! We didn’t expect a lot in those “ good old days.”
How was he with you ? I heard he wasn’t very friendly with regular people just those he did business with.
@@conniecrawford5231 Connie, I loved your post. I'm basking in nostalgia. I was too young to see the series when it first started and I can't remember if I ever watched it when I got a little older. It was only a few years ago that someone had posted the whole 12 seasons, here on you tube. I binged watched most of the series, until you tube took them down. I immediately fell in love with Jack. He was so good looking. I've only seen a few episodes of Stoney Burke, but he wasn't a clown, he was a competitive rodeo rider, who was after the Golden Buckle, given to the best rider. I'm not into that show, but honestly I'll watch anything with Jack, in his early years. I find he got sickly looking in the later years of 5-0. I'm so jealous that you met him. Was he as gorgeous in person, as he was in 5-0?
@@conniecrawford5231 totally spot-on post which brings back all memories just the way you put them. I forgot about the way they ran the reruns and all. Thinking about it's takes you back and makes you feel good.

Remains of my childhood. I was glued to the screen each time this score was launched on Sundays... or it was on Saturdays? WONDERFUL!
I was just in Hawaii for a week & that tune kept popping into my head, even the police cars set it off. Went to The Big Chiefs Luau, that guy is a legend.
This theme song has been played by every high school band in America since 1970 and it sounds good when they do it live!
I remember the when our high school marching band marched out onto the field at half-time playing this song when it first came out. The fans went nuts! We followed it up with a couple other great songs, and I think closed it marching off the field to The Horse, by Cliff Nobles. For a brief moment that week band members were the coolest students in school! 🙂
Jack Lord was a very talented actor with the energy of a younger man. He started the series at age 48. I never saw him walk up the stairs to the office. He always ran, even while wearing a suit. The 1st 2 -3 years of the series were the best probably.
I was very very young when Hawaii Five-O was shown in my country. I ALWAYS watched the TV series, and love the theme song at the beginning of the show. And later, when I was in my school band, I loved it when we played the theme song of this series. It gave me energy!
