Episode remastered, extended, and edited by me. This episode originally aired on September 17, 1963
This tv series tells the story of Dr. Richard Kimble, who is wrongly accused of murdering his wife. Although he maintains his innocence, he is found guilty and sentenced to death. Dr. Kimble manages to escape a prisoner transport train that was delivering him to his place of execution. Relentlessly pursued by the well-meaning police lieutenant Philip Gerard, who handled the murder case and brought Dr. Kimble to justice is convinced of his guilt. Dr. Kimble, for his part, is now on the hunt for the real killer, a one-armed man whom he saw fleeing the house when he found his wife dead coming home.
Across America, Dr. Kimble's escape leads. He never rests and cannot fully trust anyone due to his perpetual fear of being discovered. Because of this, Dr. Kimble has to constantly use new identities and never stay in any one location for too long. And in addition to the support of friends, Kimble also meets strangers who help him in his adventurous search for the one-armed man.
Extra: On the day this pilot aired, possibly the most famous election in Iranian history took place, where the secular, pro-Shah New Iran Party won 140 of the 200 seats in the Iranian Majles. Convicted of killing your wife, and sentenced to death...while witnessing the actual killer who got away. Wow! Not just anyone could bring these dire circumstances to life on the small stage. David Janssen did, but he also brought the fragile nature and driven urgency of a man desperate to live long enough to catch a killer. It's 2023, I've seen all these episodes, even several times...I still come back to this show and start all over again. This puts The Fugitive in some of the rarest air a TV show is possible to exist, in my humble opinion.
Although, I watched the series as a child. I really did not understand the adult complexities of the episodes. Until I rewatched it as an adult. And I became very empathetic with Richard Kimble. David Janssen was a master of his craft. R.I.P. respectfully!! Thanks for posting this extended and remastered pilot episode!!
Thank you so much for uploading this video!! I remember sneaking out to watch it with my sister because it was past our bedtime. My Mom would usually catch us and send us to bed except for the last episode in which she let us stay up to watch the ending:) That was the year my Dad had his 1st tour in Vietnam.

How did The handcuffs get off Gerard
That bothered me too, and I can only think Kimble lifted the key off Gerard after their thrown from the train. Then we see Kimble collapsed on his own, where I guess he is still in shock from the wreck..
This is being shown in reverse, yet the sound is o.k..
Brilliant storyline, still watchable nearly 50 years on.

It was almost more than 50 years ago, and I was addicted to this unforgettable TV series as a teenager. Why? It appears to me now is that David Janssen had got that melancholy look that few processed to perform, not even Harrison Ford.
I was 11 yrs old when this came out. My parents loved it. It takes me back to my childhood. But I get very sad to think David died so young. 😐 rip David you were a wonderful actor and very handsome too.
I hadn’t ever seen this first episode, because my parents didn’t start watching this series until about episode 5 or 6. I was a teen, so I was allowed to stay up and watch it too. Nice to finally watch the very first one....... thanks.

I never saw the actual pilot for the fugitive which has an extension of his trial I saw every episode right up to the last one where girard realizes ther really is a one arm man thanks for posting this
The trial backstory was in “The Girl from Little Egypt” episode with Pamela Tiffin.
I enjoy it more now than before when I was just a kid not understanding adult issues
I first saw The Fugitive series in my early 20s just in time before its 30th anniversary was celebrated with the 1993 movie. It was great drama and both David Janssen and Barry Morse were excellent.
As a sickly little asthmatic little kid, having been treated by so many kindly doctors, this show hit me hard. I didn’t watch this episode but once I was allowed to watch it I hardly missed any episodes. Those I did miss was due to me either being too sick or being hospitalized. And the hospital had strict rules about bed time hours for kids.
David Janssen was so handsome!!
He got the sort a Clarke Gable look, but I think DJ is the better actor💕
Although I saw most of this supreme series in the late 60s & early 70s, the pilot wasn't one of them. And so it has given me great pleasure to view it now for the very first time, in a long time. Many thanks for uploading this & I shall eventually be sharing this one on Facebook to bring it to the attention of those keen fans of the great actor's work who might otherwise miss it. It seems hardly possible that David Janssen could have been gone over 42 years, but he has, & should serve as a stark reminder that life is short & death is long. If anyone had suggested to Janssen during the making of this that he'd have less than 17 years to live he'd no doubt have laughed; unfortunately, it was no laughing matter. RIP DJ.

To be accurate: This isn't the 'pilot'. It's episode 14 and episode 1 of the series as aired. Episode 1, which begins 'in medias res', did air on Sept. 17, 1963. Episode 14, which presented the backstory of the series, aired on Christmas Eve, 1963.
A 'pilot' (as the term was used then) was a test episode whose purpose was to sell the concept to the network. Pilots were often shorter, without music, and with a trial cast that might be changed later. In some cases they were reworked to become an episode of the series. Rarely were they the first episode aired, as the network would usually choose a stronger episode as its initial exposure to the public.

They showed the Pilot on A&E back in 1989. Remember it well. Had just discovered Fugitive. Discovered Combat 1988. Best human dramas of all time. Gerard was to Stupid and Lazy to really look for Fred Johnson. Was born early 1970,s and had never heard of these classics.

I remember the very end of that episode, 2 weeks past my 15th birthday. Kimble is outside and sees a cop nearby. He gets nervous, maybe starting to panic, then realizes he's safe. Relief floods over his face. Never forgot that! Janssen was that good, I was caught up in his tensions all the years he was running, and when it was over, such relief and joy I felt! 😂👏👍👍

@@nancyhowell4505 Nancy I remember it so well too. I was aged 8 and the next day we were all talking about it in school - did you see the Fugitive we asked. This was in the UK; it was very very popular here too. Not sure if it was maybe just a bit later over here - but it was 1967 for sure. I was so pleased that he was free. A childhood memory I will never forget. He had become a kind of friend. I remember he walked free arm in arm with a pretty girl - which was played by Lynda (?) Baker.....well I know her surname was Baker; I didn't know if she was his sister or a girlfriend...well I was 8.
Timeless series and one of my very favorites. The show’s premise has its antecedents in the David Goodis novel “Dark Passage”, published in 1946.

When I was a kid < 5 years old, I looked David Janssen as an old man. But today when I am an old man >60, I looked David Janssen as a young man.
I never saw this pilot either. I always felt so sorry for him
One thing I like about the series is how it shows the narrow-minded fanatisism of bureaucrats with their stupidity and perseverence, ie Philip Gerard, the fanatical policeman who cannot admit that the law could condemn innocent persons. I think Emerson or Thoreau said A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, beloved of petty statesmen. Speak what you think now... I think this is found as well among the sorts of politicians we see in some administrations of state and national governments.
When I was a young girl of 6 and 7 years, once a year I was sent for a month to live with my daddy and grandmother. My mother and daddy were divorced so that was what the court allowed me to do. I remember so well, my momma taking me down to the Grayhound bus station. The smell of it and the sounds of the bus 🚌 pulling into and leaving the station. I could close my eyes 👀 and recognize each stop that the bus would make to load or unload from Sherman , Texas passengers to Saint Joe, Noconna and Vernon, Texas. 😊😊😊😊😊😊

The main thing that was missing from this excellent series was progress toward finding the one-armed man. Perhaps Kimball could have been pursuing the one-armed man and gaining some slight clue each episode.

Well KuznVinny that's a good point - but I feel the producers and writers etc saw a long road ahead ideally so Kimball was meant to have adventures while on the run, to get involved in peoples lives, in dilemmas etc and then escape and move on just as he was about to lose his secret. Its become a staple of US drama - the wanderer who moves from town to town and is trying so hard to find his resting place, or his goal. This applied to Kung Fu and also to the Hulk. Also to Branded. Maybe others too that I cant quite recall just here. For some reason, maybe its "frontier mentality" but it seems to be a big part of ongoing US drama series.

I never saw this… I saw the first episode back in the year and have all the DVD’s.
As long as you were adding scenes that were not in the pilot, you could have given the frog a closeup, a couple more croaks, something.
But the frog croacked.
The one legged frog who got away with the murder and framed the one armed man.
I believe the frog never wanted anything to do with the show after having his scenes shortened in edit. He was never payed as much as the fellow (human) actors.

Of course right at the start for maximum sympathy they tapped the score from my favorite, most sentimental episode of "The Twilight Zone," "Walking Distance" by Bernard Herrmann.
This is NOT the “Extended Pilot.” All someone has done is taken the flashback scenes filmed in June 1963 for “The Girl from Little Egypt” and tacked them onto the beginning scenes shot half a year earlier (in late Nov. & Dec. 1962) for the actual pilot, “Fear in a Desert City.” No hospital, courtroom, or extended escape scenes were filmed until after QM knew that ABC had approved the pilot to proceed for production as a new series.

Doesn't really matter as long as everyone knows what it is: I was 6 or 7 when episode 1 was aired, so it doesn't really matter. :-)
I thought it was a reconstructed 'pilot' from missing scenes, as I thought S1E1 was missing a 'beginning', so seeing the 'stolen' clips later on will be fun!
The actual Ep 1 looks very modern & fresh: looking forward to the series, both as nostalgia and appreciative of timeless good drama. :-)

this is the 1st TV show Glen A Larson wrote. he went on to create, write, direct, produce or write the theme songs for loads of TV shows which include Quincy ME which he created wrote directed and produced. Knight rider, 6 million dollar man, Buck Rodgers. Magnum PI Battlestar Galactica just to name a few of his most popular shows.
He didnt start writing the scripts for the Fugative till 1966. but the show went on the air in 1963 so he took over from someone else.
I'm impressed. Not sure how you were able to not get a strike from YT. They hit me already for a show that wasn't very popular.
This proves my point even though i have started upgrading to blu ray there are some old shows that were remastered on dvd that even look amazing fugitive high chapparal gunsmoke perry mason andy griffith leave it to beaver twilight zone come to mind and many others
Why is it that at 9:40 a witness says he also saw the one armed man but yet Kimble is still convicted? Surely that throws the prosecution case out the window and at the least provides reasonable doubt.
Not only that. His actual testimony isn’t until years later while Kimble was on the run.

No, you’re thinking of a Season 2 episode, “Escape into Black” where Kimble has amnesia. The witness didn’t show up until Season 3’s “Trial by Fire.” That’s why this fake “extended pilot” is deceiving.
The real pilot never had any flashback scenes. They all came later.
@@clugul In the UK they are playing the series, one episode a day Mon - Friday. I missed the first episode but they are now replaying them all again so got it this time. They're on CBS Justice. Great series, great acting, great music, great stories, and GREAT CARS. You Americans have been so lucky in the past to have the most beautifull cars ever made. Even the compact ones. I wonder if we'll ever see such beauty on the roads ever again. At least bring back chrome and white walls.

Thanks for uploading this. Nice work. Over the years, I'd seen random episodes of this show, and loved what I saw. But until just now, I'd never seen this pilot. And it did not disappoint. Janssen was brilliant in this role, as was everyone else, including Brian Keith. Terrific writing, directing and photography as well. I need to pick up the DVD set I think, but am unsure as to which set. Apparently every release had problems according to Amazon reviews (wrong music used, defective disks, etc.). Does anyone have a recommendation? The least expensive set is listed at about $45. Would that one be okay? The next step up appears to be $120, which is a bit high for me, and that set apparently had its own problems. Can anyone tell me their buying experiences? I'd appreciate it.

There was never an extended pilot & there was never any footage of Gerard in the Kimble home. The quick shots of Coroner personnel removing a body are NOT from any Fugitive episode. It’s deceiving to have inserted that footage. Gerard knew all along that Kimble was innocent. He was just too gun-ho as a detective to carry out the directive of the court .
Also Lt. G felt sorry for Dr K and respected and kind of liked him.

In the four years "The Fugitive " ,was on ABC-TV from 1963-1967 , I was surprised these 3 prolific character actors did not make any guest appearances on this classic series.Simon Oakland, Nehemiah Persoff,and Harold J. Stone. Do you agree? I await your reply.

While it’s only a TV Show, the main character Kimble who claims to be innocent, commits numerous serious felonies over the shows 4 yr run. Hypocrisy to the extreme.

I had worse luck, I am in prison because my boss who died was poisoned.
We had a loud, very loud, vocal shouting match, a vocal fight that day over fiduciary responsibility being neglected at our for- profit zoo company, and I stormed out after lightly pushing my boss to get out of my way, in front of other zoo board of directors who witnessed that.
Later, after I cooled down after taking a walk over by the hippo pond where I saw a floating baby hippo, I returned to my boss's office only to find on the way nearby, that the cage of poisonous South American tree lizards was open. Later, I found out that the zoo attendant, had forgotten to lock it back before he had to go off in a big hurry and use the bathroom. Anyway, after the argument, I had earnestly come back to speak to my boss and clear the air, but when I walked in, he was slumped over his desk, deader than a doornail. When he did not look like he was breathing, I called the police. Later, when my lawyer and I read the toxicology report when I was on trial, I found out my boss was killed with a poison none of the medical autopsy medical doctors could identify, until they snapped and mistakenly said it was a strichnine derivative.
Wouldn't you know, I had bought some of that poison shortly before that to quell a rat infestation at my weekend farm.
Well, at the zoo there were no witnesses.
But, they would not believe me when I told them I saw something in that office that made my blood chill, one of those poisonous tree lizards with a strichnine-like poison in their bite, it turns out, from the Amazon rainforests apparently had gotten loose. I called on my cellphone for the zoo attendant from the lizards' cage to come and get the creature immediately after I saw it, but he took so long to get there, the creature had crawled away, back out of sight in my boss's office, and..back into its cage.
However, the attendant trying to save his own skin, made up a story that this Amazonian tree lizard had only strolled a few feet from its cage when he found him.
Meanwhile, I had forgotten that they were poisonous, and the police never asked because they did not know. I mean a harmless lizard, c'mon.
The police also did not believe me when I also said it had damaged areas on its body.
Later, when I was rotting in jail, it dawned on me and I remembered that we had had a monitor lizard in that cage two days before my boss died, and that big monitor lizard had gotten into a fight with the very tree lizard that I had seen, and had just savagely attacked and tried to eat the tree lizard, the latter survived, the worse for wear, but survived. They had to move the monitor lizard to another zoo in the next town over.
But, after my memory was jogged and I appealed my case, I had rotten luck. It turned out that when they went back to see the lizard, it was no longer damaged.
That's right thanks to regeneration they couldn't find any damaged tree lizards, see the tree lizard's ripped off arm had grown back.
Damn one-armed assailant, and just my luck, a one-armed lizard.

I'm sorry, but this is absolutely horrendous. You've done a very skillful job of butchering television history. The story was told the way it was originally told, for a reason. You've changed all that. Sadly, people watching this video of yours won't know how you've rearranged scenes and episodes, and removed very masterful narration that helped make the series what it was. Just because technology makes it possible to do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD. What you've done is an absolute disgrace, and disrespectful of the original work.
