Today, in another episode of Chase uses himself as a test dummy, we're taking Yamaha's MT07 for a day of highway riding to see what it does to my body! Will it be terrible? Most likely. Are there FAR better motorcycles for the job? Absolutely! Does any of that stop him from testing it? Definitely not!

i was always worried about the caution people shared with naked bikes regarding the wind, but once i finally hopped on one i realized the wind doesn’t bother me at all :) i hope anyone who takes that as it’s only flaw tried it out before dismissing it as their new baby
Yeah, most people complaining about wind and buffeting, are people who own a windscreen. The wind itself is fine. The buffeting is caused by badly designed windscreens...
What I’ve realised on the mt07, is that after 3-4 hours you butt no longer feels pain since the pain in your lower spine surpasses the pain you feel in your butt two fold
The one dislike is from an R7 owner
Wish we still had a dislike button
I ride 10+ hours / day every other weekend on a stock MT07. Honestly think it's comfy and I don't think it "sucks on the highway".
It's only boring (feel slow to be exact) on the highway when you ride with immature friends that speed and cut thru traffic for no reason. That's why I prefer to do solo missions. I slow down when I want to... and pop a random wheelie or two, or ten lol.
How in the world do you ride 10+ hours every day O.o
@@irelax8595 he said 10 hours / day every other weekend. Most likely some weekend long ride jaunts he does every fortnight... not daily.
@@dinocangeles probably could’ve worded it better tho lol
Having ridden a 260lb dual sport on highways and found it was bearable, not ideal but manageable I feel as though a bike like this would certainly be far superior on the highway.
Never get tired of looking at the mt07, thank you feel free to make more
Stop looking at it, it's naked !
OC: I have this bike now, have it for a month and been commuting on it 1h a day on the highway (+-120kmph), I've got the sport screen that yamaha offers and it offers some protection from the wind, but not very much, it gets the wind off my stomach but still chest and head wind.. But not turbulent though, still a clean wind blast :)
What’s “OC” mean?
@@vissla8084 Outro Crew, chase's name for people who watch 'till the end of the video :)
OC: Haha thanks😂
Thanks I'm getting one next week
So basically the screen helps little to nothing. But could you lean into it and be fully covered for some quicker stretches?
OC: Thanks for taking one for the team! Still like the MT07! Will look at wind protection and seat options!
Just got back from a nice ride in 45 degree temps. I love riding my 2021 MT07. It's like riding a young colt. So spirited and strong. I just installed a Puig touring windshield and had to test it. It did well at 60 keeping the wind off the chest. You still feel it on your shoulders and around your helmet but it isn't a turbulent wind.
I just bought this bike and I can't wait to get a small windscreen for it. Great video as always.
Note to all... don't ever try to wiggle your handle bars on the freeway, lol. Very bad idea, you can throw your bike into a wobble and go down. That MT-07 I'm sure doesn't have a stabilizer, that's why it's easy to throw it into a wobble.
When he quit wiggling the bars the bike goes stable. Obviously the bike is stable, Chase, not so much. Yes I do own a 2022 my 07 and it has never had anything even close to head shake.
@@davidleonard8369 I was stating that for all the new or semi new riders out there. You should never purposely wiggle your bars. That goes for any bike. You can throw any bike into a wobble that way.
@@iambigryan I’m not sure what you are talking about. I totally agree with what you stated. Chase was doing something that is not too safe. My point is that the motorcycle is not inherently unstable and Chase clearly demonstrated that by trying to induce a tank slapper and getting away with it.
@@davidleonard8369 Ahh, I see what you are saying. I think we mostly agree. However, he wasn't trying to throw it into a wobble or a tank slapper. That would be really dumb, because if he was wrong, he'd go down and die, lol. He gave it a little wiggle to judge the reaction of the bike. That's my whole point. I don't want people to think that, it's a good idea to test that yourself, as you stated as well. But, I also don't want people to think that any bike is wobble-proof, because that is not true either. I had a 2015 FZ-07 and I had a slight wobble one time. It was no big deal and I didn't go down, and it had nothing to do with bad engineering or anything. It was just one of those things. But, if you've never had that happen, or you are screwing around and are inexperienced, it could be a bad day for you.
obviously you never owned an MT 07.. it does not need a stabilizer
WoW ! what a great review , i’ve seen multiple reviews of this model but this guy pointed out All of the Important information that a rider (new/experienced) needed to know about how this Bike feels in his experienced opinion. Great job my dude👍
Aside from riding through downtown to work, my mt07 is always enjoying the seaside highway to the mountains. No complaints on the comfort, the wind is expected on a naked. The sound I make with a full exhaust oooo love it. It's going to be hard parting with my first bike, but I think I'm down for the mt10 redesign whenever it comes out.
Did you get an MT10?
OC: You had the right idea when you propped your elbow on the tank. You just needed to scoot back on the seat (almost onto the passenger seat.) That relieves alot of butt pressure, you'll know when you get it right. I have been on 500+ mile ride days, it works. Yes the suspension is soft, esp if you are over saayyyy 200lbs. Can't beat the bang for buck though.
Another great review. Thanks Chase! OC!
As an Fz-07 owner this video makes me happy 😂
OC, still going to buy one in the coming months thank you for the video and suggestions
5:11 a piece of advice, if you're going to do highways on a naked, invest into windshield, it's cheap and it's a major comfort improvement.
I love watching a video describing my neck of the woods regarding motorcycles.
I ride mine on the highway mostly everyday and zero issues. The wind did suck, so I put a medium size windshield on mine and it made a big difference. I will change my seat out so I can ride more than 4 hours.
Your videos helped me on my decision to purchase a mt07. Thank you
I added an air hawk seat cushion and a windshield and can ride 500+ miles in a day without a problem. I also added a Corbin seat, but I think the air hawk made more difference. I have been on a few long trips with my 2017 FZ-07 and plan to do some longer trips soon. I'll let you know how they go!
Airhawk DEFINITELY makes an immense difference. Like riding on a cloud haha
What air hawk cushion did you get? This is my first time hearing about them and I don’t know what one fits the 07
OC: I’d love to see a follow up video where you made the suggested mods and ran the test again just to see how much of a difference it would make
I'd like to see a follow up video where everyone who has ever ridden a motorcycle longer than a year suggests Yamaha stop fucking around with the suspension when they sell these bikes. It's not a matter of cost, the spring rates, oil thickness, and shim sizes are wrong. That costs literally nothing to fix at the factory.
@@aluisious well at least it’s inexpensive to remedy. 15wt fork oil and pvc pipe.
I take the stock seat off my bikes and add gel and padding to the areas needed for each bike, easy to do and safe a ton of money. It's as good and even better than most aftermarket seats. $500 or $45. Thats a lot of gas or extra parts.
Chase, thank you for your service. 🇺🇸 🏍
Like anything else, you adapt. I can live with the highway fatigue. The comfort seat helps. It does raise the seat height a little. A true windscreen would solve the fatigue problem but it does detract from the look of this bike. It is challenging riding an MT-07 in cold weather. That's when you absolutely must wear heated gear. One thing you didn't mention (in this video?) was how adept the MT-07 is at turning at low speeds especially hairpins. Every fault you pointed out about the MT-07 is true but overall, I wouldn't trade it in for a super sport. I'm having a ton of fun riding this bike at high speeds AND low speeds. Highway riding is more a nuisance than a detraction.
Great video...
I think your right, with the comfort seat and at least a flyscreen from Yamaha it would make all the difference. Would be interesting if you took that same ride with those two accessories.
OC: I have a 2017 FZ07 and I don’t mind it on the highway but yes, it’s definitely not the best and I love it anyway.
Really considering the MT line. This 07 is impressive.
OC: I love that it exists for folks who want to do hooligan stuff but for me fun and highway comfort are 1A and 1B.
I owned one of these, and I absolutely loved it! Only downside in my book was the soft forks, with no means of adjustment. Otherwise, it´s short wheelbase, short rake, so it will feel more nervous at high speeds than bigger bikes, and most bikes of its own size. The speed is no problem, it will easily do 100mph, which is way above what you should do anyway.
The plus side of this is extreme agility when the road gets a bit wiggly - you can feel it wanting to get into the fun twisties!!! Wide handlebars means you should be careful not to rest on them, though - tiny inputs means great results... The seat is a friggin´ treat! Wide rear to rest your ass, and narrow front to reach the ground easily for short riders.
I really disagree about the highway winds conclusion - getting a windscreen for this bike that fits even the average biker, would mean a screen about 2´tall!!! That just looks ridiculous, and you might still get buffeting from the sides. I tried a few screens on this bike, I am a short rider and thought it looked hideous with even a 1´screen + it didn´t help me at all, it just made it worse. Naked bikes should stay naked. If you need a screen, get a car!
OC. Still one of my favorite mid size bikes. I'll own one of the gunmetal gray ones soon.
That faceshield goes so good with your outfit and fits you well
Well if you don’t want to be doing scary speeds it’s good to feel the wind as it enhances the sense of speed
Picking mine up tomorrow!
OC. never finish a 200-mile trip on a single motocycle before but i can feel the pain that chase felt :))))
OC - Totally still dig the bike even though it sucks on the highway, not every bike is good on the highway and that's juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust fine.
Mine doesn’t suck anywhere. It’s not super quick at the drag strip but that’s what my sportster is for.
I love seeing CZcamsrs where I live
Got the new MT-09 and it’s not nearly as bad as I expected. It’s better than my Harley with a saddlemen seat on it. I was riding for over 5 hours a couple weeks ago. The bike was still brand new at that point so the seat wasn’t broken in yet and it wasn’t terrible. I had to stand up here and there and I stopped a couple times for 5 minutes to stretch my legs. Overall I wasn’t completely beat up by the time I got home. I did something similar with my Harley before the seat broke in and I really struggled with walking for almost a week. I don’t think I’d be as comfortable on the MT-07 though. I’m a US size and I don’t think that suspension would treat me too well on a NJ highway lol.
OC: get the windscreen and use it for in town commuting rather than long highway shadetree surgeon style rides.
Flying to Kansas city this Friday to pick up the only MT09 I could find and will be riding it back to Texas. So this video is very well timed even with a different displacement.
Where in Texas makes a big difference haha. And just Yea... Take plenty of breaks. Seriously even just a ten minute stop to stretch can help.
@@jeffbrownme2 San Antonio lol 😂 oh yeah for sure. Gonna be the longest ride I have personally been on. I looked everywhere and everyone was sold out! And I couldn't justify a $850 shipping cost that would take a month to get my new bike >.
@@JohnnyTwos It's insane that nobody has any bikes. I am guessing they're all stuck in containers out on the ocean somewhere.
Picking up the one at LCC?
My Yamaha 550 Vision was notorious for handle bar wiggle on the highway.
For those who are considering buying one. Just buy it. Its fucking amazing.
should I put a windscreen, back rack , and airhawk on it ?
My 2020 tuned by 2wdw, wind screen, exhaust, and snorkel delete still gets 51-53 under regular riding. Yes above 60 mph or if windy it can be brutal.
To alleviate any sense of narrowness, the MT-07 features a new tapered handlebar that is 32mm wider and 19mm taller and offers improved feelings of control and comfort for a wider range of rider sizes. From their site , new for 2022 so they must have agreed it was an issue to be fair to Chase .
The 21 is when they did the handlebar
I have the 21. Didn't like over 80 before I got the windscreen. I have the puig touring. It's amazing! I hated the seat. I bought the bagster luxe seat for about 270 bucks. You can ride it all day.
I got the 2021 all black love it
OC: A great bike for those who have a naughty side but also want to behave on the commute Monday through Friday.
Commute or not, I never behave
I have a Benelli Leoncino 500 Trail, and love it. BUT, I also like this MT07... I'd like to build one into a scrambler. The first thing I'd do is put on a wider set of bars... Those look pretty narrow to me.
OC: I still want to get one... Thanks for the review.
Thus is so funny this. Ame up today. I'm going to dallas , about 2 hours from my house on my mt07. This will be my 1st trip
OC. this compared to the mt10 for extended highway use? I am currently on a 21 MT09 and looking to get a sporty bike but should I upgrade to the MT10 before I buy a sporty bike?
I had one of the early Fz07's like a 2015 so can't compare exactly to the new model. But I really didn't like the highway performance on my fz. I agree with Chase it feels very wobbly and unstable above like 80. Feels literally like the front wheel is just going to fly away.
Sure it's a 650 naked but like... My wife's SV doesn't react like that. Just really that front suspension needs a serious upgrade if you ever want to do highway action.
Is the sv 650 naked or does it have a bikinis faring. Aerodynamics is does greatly affect ride ability. It's like having a sail on the bike when the bike is naked.
Don't worry the "new" mt07 is just a styling exercise 😂
@@williamrainbow4115 It's the naked one. Don't get me wrong the wind still beats you up on both bikes. But the sv at least feels like it'll stick to the road. The fz the front starts feeling very loose at higher speeds.
Hey Chase, can you review the old MT01, would love to hear what you think?
I was considering buying a Mt07 but after sitting on one I noticed with a short inseam the foot pegs are right where your put your legs down. I doubt a rear set peg install would put them out of the way enough.
I was finished with CZcams, but nooooo. Have to watch that mountain ride now...lol
I purchased a new 2016 and put a little over 11,000 miles on it in a little over 2 years before selling it. It has to be one of the best “around town” bikes ever made. On the highway it’s horrible. The engine that’s so rambunctious feeling under 40mph completely runs out of legs above 70 mph. The wonderfully light weight and sharp rake really works against it above 80mph. Suspension is a sponge. Some of that head shake/ death wobble is probably from wheel alignment. Use a string to align wheels, don’t trust swingarm marks. 100 miles on that thing and I was ready for a break. I didn’t like it on the highway. I think the MT09 is a much better all around machine that still has it’s own problems.
Positives
These things sound incredible with an aftermarket exhaust. Lively, fun and easily do u turns in a single lane. 60+mpg if you can minimize wheelies and hamfisted riding.(good luck with that because that’s where the 07 shines!)
I think all the super naked has same problem with the wind. I had 4 of this, but no problem.... not more that most expect.
OC: I just got the 2020 MT07 and the windscreen is going to be the first thing I put on it other than the tank bag I already had.
This bike is the best bike yamaha make in his all history, this is a jack of all trades, i love this bike so much.
RD350
Seems like a great bike. Just not the best for the highway. The speed wobble (albeit self induced) seems concerning. I can do similar on my SV650, and it’s just lively. Not concerning at all. But TBH, I feel like I really need this bike…: too.
Don't buy a fairing less bike unless you can handle wind noise lol. That being said, it's honestly not that bad if you wear ear plugs with your helmet. And especially if you play some music too 👍🌶️
It's a naked bike, you're supposed to feel the wind, but yeah, over 70 mph gets uncomfortable.
I wonder how much they pay for the insurance about per month. Can someone help me answer it?
the only thing I wish is the R7's OEM quick shifter to fit the MT07 too
It does
Do they make any type of bar stabilizer for the mt-07?
I wrecked an fz8 at the beginning of last riding season and have been trying to decide what to get as a replacement. Would I be better off getting another fz8 or this mt-07?
Definitely need a Windscreen, handlebar risers & airhawk seat cushion. Front fork improvement.
Chase, there's no inventory available. I can't get my hands on an MT07. I* would've already had one!
I’m trying to get a2 license and is looking if MT-07 is the right one for me. I hv to say I’m thrilled.
Jesus start smaller, fuuuuk
This bike is great on the freeway. You just have to downshift to a gear where you are in the power band if you want to accelerate quickly.
Drop a gear and disappear is the motorcycle acceleration motto, so this isn’t a deal breaker at all
@@FluxMT Correct. I'm aware. It's just, you're not going to disappear on the MT-07. Quite frankly.
OC: Chase you have got to get an exhaust on that thing! Riding it without an exhaust should be illegal.. lol
Pretty sure it's just a loaner bike
Wonder what would be more
Comfortable at 70-75mph freeway riding mt-07 or vulcan s???
Corbin seats might help
Did you ride the cb650r? im confused which one should buy mt07 or cb650r .. any advices?
I been commuting on my 03 636 for the last 3 years and for high school my gsxr750.... I’ve always always always wanted a fz07 for commuting ( i do construction across SoCal ) and I was always told the fz07 suspension is Ass for highways ... I rode one once but had race tech goodies on it but on local streets and felt nice ... once they but some r6 suspension on it or fz09 forks on it I’ll get one . As for now , nope ... even the gsx1000 and z900 have sport suspension .... cmon yamaha
Can u test ride the rebel 1100 if there available? Thank you! I would love to see ur opinion on the bike.
if you add a windshield to the mt07 could it be better or there is no way you can make any trip with the bike?
A steering stabilizer will help with the wobble. But it’s not that bad
Not trying to purposely induced a wobble really helps. I have the same bike and it never even thinks about shaking it’s head at any speed. Yes I can do the same thing that Chase did but the instant you stop shaking the bars the bike goes stable.
Kind of seems like a perfect bike for me I would prefer a fairing or atleast a small wild shield
r7
OC another problem solvable by bringing the tracer 7 to america.
Has any of the 2021 issues been corrected in the 2022 model?
Rumor has it the Smort Helmet is MT07 compatible
Love it like I use to? Hell no!! I love it more, I really appreciate the cockpit view in this video so yeah I love it more.
dude how do you get those camera angles!?
Nice to finally see some high speed reviews of this bike. It's beautiful, to be sure and a warrior - but I had honestly suspected that most reviewers were hooning around neighborhoods and urban streets only. Living in TX, everything in this state is spread WAY OUT compared to other parts of the country and high-speed travel is a must to get anywhere but the grocery store. Thanks, bro. Seems too impractical (disappointingly) for my needs - but it's to be expected. Definitely NOT a Texas bike. I'll keep looking.
I'm in Houston, came to the same conclusion. Still looking for the right bike
Was/is considering it as well, ~220 lbs, 6'1'', this doesn't seem like it would work for me either. Now considering the Mt-09, only problem is this will be my very first bike and the mt 09 is rather powerful.
@@claqyagami6914 I was looking for my first bike as well, but the MT-09 is (as you said) is an aggressive bike. I've looked at a number of reviews and the throttle mapping/padding is pretty violent as well and a lot of riders complained about its temperament. I think the newer versions are less aggressive in the throttle than the original, but it's still not a refined and tamed bike by any means.
I love the look of a naked, but the Versys 650 (touring bike) seems to be a capable, flick-able, and adaptable go (almost) anywhere bike that gets a lot of praise despite its less than sexy appearance.
@@marrowdreign might still go with the with the mt09. Imma eventually want to ride the highways and with Texas highway speeds I wouldn't feel comfortable on an mt07. Plu the wonky suspension for someone my size is another negative. Already have my licence, but will redo my MSF course before getting any bike and keep doing lessons to get my skills up. I already have someone who i can practice with so imma bit more comfortablestarting off on the mt09. But, might eventually change my mind
@@claqyagami6914 You're a big framed guy, so smaller bikes you'd definitely outgrow fast. I can understand where you are coming from. You're training, educating and practicing. That's a good mindset, in my opinion. Just don't get complacent and stay safe! It's like we say in the oilfield - keep your head on a swivel and don't do stupid shit. ✌️
No windscreen is brutal at highway speeds
I have a 2019 MT-07, and this right here is my biggest criticism of the bike. It's a great bike to learn on and have lots of fun with, but it really does not like the highway.
you should add some small windscreen
What are your favorite naked bikes for highway use?
Oc. I had a fz 07 with a wind screen and i dont remember having wind issues on the highway. And i may have maybe gone over 85
Hopefully they upgrade that seat, and the suspension
the've had along time to update it. they still havent.
Put on a after market exhaust and yll literally feel the difference
Please do a Diavel 1260 on the highway all day 😳
6:59 I'm completely new to motorcycles. Would a steering damper solve that wiggling?
That's more of a wheelbase and rake issue. All bikes will wobble a bit if they are induced through input by you or the road, I wouldn't worry about it.
Get a use one slap a r6 front end and call it a day, sound like a plan to me.
Do not add a windscreen to a naked bike. I own this bike & commute no windscreen needed just change to lower wider handle bars. My chest now leans more into the wind with no strain.
How do you get those crazy far third person angles?
i bought a mt-07 as my first bike! i posted the first time i ride the mt-07 if people want to see...
i will keep posting some videos!
You can get tall wind shield for these? My cbr500 is a bit rough on the high I’m also6’3”
I was looking at this bike too! More for in-town not so much highway stuffs. Question though, how do you find the riding position? How tall are you?
This bike is perfect for in town riding. While I don't have the newer model, I can speak for the older model (2017). I'm 6ft tall and the bike is a little on the shorter side but noneless comfortable to ride. The siting position is very upright and more relaxed compared to my aggressive sitting position on my cbr600rr. So it definitely takes off a lot of stress off your lower back lol.
