    This project is so much fun to follow. It's the big kid version of hacking my Playmates tricorder in my parents' workshop decades ago, but with real computer and sensors. Thanks for documenting the progress and sharing your enthusiasm! LLAP

      Haha, about 8 years ago I *finally* managed to get my hands on one of those. Cost me a bloody fortune to buy from the UK, almost 100 eur w/ S&H.

      I finally found one, along with a phaser. The tricorder suffered awful battery leakage but a bit of time in the electronics lab I managed to rebuild it

      @tra-viskaiser8737 Před 12 dny

      @@compwiz101 oh I still have my playmates tricorder and phasers. And I know they are all over Ebay.
      I meant the mk-I that some science lab produced in the early to mid 90s. It came with a CD to link it to a pc. And could read temperature, barometric pressure, magnetic field readings and a couple other things they squeezed into it. It looked like some prop off tng, but was sort of prototype-ish in look. Flat, non folding and shaped a bit like an old 1800s coffin.

    Holy crap... this is the most 'my childhood come to life' moment I've had in a LONG time. As a trekie, a RPi hoobyist, and someone who wants to get more into creative 3D printing, I can't help but be super inspired by your work. Subscribed, and can't wait to see the future iteration(s) of this project, or what you create next!

    Very nice job. I always had an idea of making my picorder prototype more clean and integrated like this. I also considered the 3D printed case and I really like the integrated sensors on the top panel - that's something I would have loved to do.
    I considered updating mine, especially as the ZERO 2 is out now as well...... not sure I can face all that soldering again though!

    Awesome build! I love it, I've always wanted to make something like this! :D
    Possible idea to make the OS more multi-threaded. I haven't tried this but I'd imagine running the python scripts all separately and having them write their latest data to files.
    Then having the python script controlling the screen read those files when they change (check modified date every loop/few loops?) and show the latest data from those.

    You're using Threads instead of forking the process with Python's Multiprocessing module. You might get better performance using Multiprocessing instead.

      Incredible project! Your passion is inspiring too.
      Can you recommend and good learning resources for understanding multiple threads or processes?

    • @ralphclark
      @ralphclark Před 3 lety +1

      Unlikely. The whole point of multithreading is that it consumes less resources than multiple processes do. The real problem here is that the CPU on these pi zero boards is pretty weak, it’s the same one used on the original raspberry pi. But that said, python is not really suitable for performance realtime apps and coding up the whole thing in properly optimised multithreaded C would probably yield a much better result

    have you looked into using a interrupt for the door open signal ? if the door and screen timing was the bigger issue, leading to this performance loss; then doing so would better fix the issue.

  • @SianaGearz
    @SianaGearz Před 2 lety

    Aaaaah that soldering... i guess main thing, it works, but i'm a little surprised that it does. Also what looks like uncleaned solder sputter all over, which is... fine, probably too small to cause any damage.

      Thank you! It's been a tough winter so far. I've been very busy. But I have acquired and installed a Pi Zero2 which has brought SIGNIFICANT performance improvements. Also there is new functionality and features I've been adding, as well as working on the older picorder as well. Expect an update in a couple months or less!
      Thanks for asking!

    I think you'll have 100X better graphics performance, battery life, and mental health if you switch to the raspberry pi pico instead of the zero.

    • @gabrieldarcy9067
      @gabrieldarcy9067 Před 2 lety

      With a Pico, all the sensors would be more or less plug-and-play. Would make building one of these much less of a headache I think.

  • @Maximxls

    you really should move from zero w because this thing NEEDS more cores. pico probably would make an enormous difference if you do menu and screen on another process (because of GIL threads wouldn't use two cores efficiently)

    Have you thought about using a compute module 4? It's faster(If you're still using a Pi 3), smaller and you wouldn't have to use a hat.

    • @obso1337
      @obso1337  Před 3 lety +1

      I've thought about it, but for this project it was a little too involved. Having direct access to the GPIO header was pretty useful and I'm not sure it would have been as accessible for someone at my novice level to integrate that particular SBC.
      Maybe for a future build?
