    Thank you for demonstrating this! The only way the ATEM soundinputs work acceptable is when you put them to line, which gives you a consumer type -10 dB stereo input. Feed that with the right signal and you're okay.

    We simply connect our external sound board to the ATEM input - after using the Atem config program to change from mic level to line level. It’s simply the much better way to go. An external mixer offers much better control over each channel and you are limited only by the number of channels in the mixer. Plus there is no need for special cables - which is helpful if you get into a bind and need to find a spare cable.

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  Před 3 lety +3

      Oh, absolutely. I am 100% in agreement with you on that. I always use some external mixing device for live streams. Currently with one of my side gigs we are using the Allen & Heath DLive console.
      This video was merely a proof of concept, and to show that it can be done if needed.
      Thanks Scott!

  • @delcanvideoproductions4895

    The ATEM is not intended to drive dynamic mics like the Shures you are using because these mics have a very low output. The ability to split the two mic inputs is useful if you use lav mics since BOTH the tip and ring will deliver power to the lav mics (about 3v) and they will supply enough output to satisfy the ATEM pre amps. So you could have 4 lav mics running from the ATEM audio sockets. If you have cameras with mic inputs you could split those in the same way - potentially giving you 12 audio inputs !
    Obviously an external mixer is preferable for ease of control but generally* audio mixers don't provide the 3-5v required by lav mics (you would need more expensive mics with phantom power adapters to drop the 48v phantom power to around 5v for that). But mixers are ideal to drive professional 48v condenser mics and will often have enough gain to deal with dynamic mics (at least 65db). But external mixers can also produce hiss if they have cheap pre amps or if you have to apply most of their quoted gain to a dynamic mic.
    Some ENG mixers like the SoundDevices MixPre's do have a splittable 3.5mm 3v mic input as well as XLRs and good clean gain for dynamics but they are a bit expensive.

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  Před 4 lety +2

      That makes complete sense! I guess what I was targeting is people who want to stream their podcast and didn’t have an external mixer. I’ll have to test it with multiple lavs to see how it works.

    • @artkarp
      @artkarp Před 4 lety +4

      Both Deity and Rode make a XLR to 3.5 mm adapter that takes 48v and drops it to 3v for lav mics. So that gives you another option for a crazy audio chain. I would use it with a mixer or Rodecaster Pro. 😁

    A headphone out and headphone volume would have been a nice addition to this ATEM Mini. But not a deal breaker. Using an HDMI audio extractor on the ATEM HDMI output. The 1/8 stereo mini inputs also a weak link but it's a small footprint so there isn't room for individual say 1/4" inputs. I was surprised bringing externally processed audio sounded as good as it does. So the audio inputs are usable.

    Your video shows some interesting workarounds, but makes me doubt that we can get professional quality audio streaming through any model of the Atem Mini. Main concern is live streaming (while recoding) live classical chamber music concerts is to be able to continue to use our Blumlein-paired Neuman KN184 mics, preamped through our Sound Design 232 while switching and possibly PIPing between two, (rarely 3) fixed and a mobile camera, rather than any camera, or the Mini's preamp. The lack of XLR, BNC or even standard phono inputs is concerning, but we really can't justify spending yet more on equipment which obsoletes quickly, and may become unnecessary in the near(?) future. Operation also has to be as simple as possible to minimize disruption to musicians and audience from the front-row position the historic and acoustically very live necessitates. The ISO model, with its retention of separate RAW streams and possibility of further post remixing is attractive. I surmise that the sound quality is essentially the same as the "pro" but better than the base modes.

      @@RyanKnowsNothing So my setup is this, and please correct me if wrong. I have a Sony FS5 MK2 that I send to Epiphan Pearl 2 with 4K add-on. I use that to record in 4 K and to stream live to CZcams via 1080p. So I run a Rode wireless mic from myself into the transmitter. If more than 1 person then it’s 2-3-4 mics that go from Rode Filmmaker’s Kit to the Zoom H6 then I connect the Zoom H6 into the camera via balanced cable so that I don’t have to do any sync in post. Should I connect to the Pearl Instead? Next question is I want to add multiple camera and then add a splitter like a ATEM Pro or a Roland to do switching better than what the Pearl has. Would I keep the same and just run all cameras in to the Roland. The Rode wireless mics all the Zoom then the Zoom into the main camera and then Roland out to Pearl and Pearl can record and Stream or should the Audio go the Roland Or the Pearl? Can’t you just save the ATEM Mini Pro settings, including the audio, into a file via the ATEM Control Software? And also tell it to save your config as the startup config? Once you save the settings for one channel, you can copy/paste/edit the XML in the appropriate section of the saved config file to duplicate the settings for the other channels, load the audio config back into the ATEM (having saved it as a discrete file), & then save the edited config files, including startup config, again.
    FYI, I use an app called iMix 16 Pro 64 on my iPad to play video and audio into the ATEM Mini Pro.
    Thanks as always for your educational & entertaining videos!

      I'll have to check out that app. I use Q-Lab quite a bit, so it just felt natural to go there. Thanks for the advice!

    Please do not call it "unbalancing" when you short a cable that came out a microphone or mixer from which a signal could be balanced. "Shorting" or using "one of the two signals" is not the same as "unbalancing". When you short it or use one side, the "balancing" just never started in the first place. The way you connected this can also go wrong if the tip, ring, sleeve of the mini jacks is in a other order connected to the 2 female mini-jacks. There are cables with on one side the stereo mini jack and on the other side have two female xlr plugs. These cables are made for this 'strange' connection. If you want the cable to be balanced, then you can use a transformer/decoupler/DI box (preferable in a 1:1 ratio) to do proper real unbalancing. For short cables balancing/unbalancing is not really needed. However a decoupler(transformer) can be wise to prevent other unwanted shorting.

      It’s pretty much as simple as plugging it in to the mic input and making sure you have mic level selected in the ATEM software. Hearing it on the other hand is the difficult part. You either have to run it to a monitor that has a headphone out, or get a box from Amazon that splits the audio from the HDMI signal. Luckily the ATEM Extreme had a headphone out. Just wish us poor people that can’t afford the extreme had an easier time of it.

Great videos you produce, straight with no nonsense jibber jabber.. keep up the great work. !!

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  Před 3 lety

      Hi Art,
      Again, sorry for the delay in my response. I think on those cameras it is a mic input. When you monitor through the Atomos, is it distored, or only when you send to FB Live? If it is only on FB live, then I'd look at your audio volumes on the ATEM Software Control. See what the meters are outputting. If they are hitting the red, then you're definitely distorting the audio being broadcast. You can adjust the gain of the level coming from your camera inside the ATEM Software Control panel. It's the rotary knob at the top of your HDMI 1 input channel.
      If you are hearing distortion from the Atomos, I'd check the wireless receivers and make sure their gain settings aren't turned way up. I've had that happen one or two times.
      I hope that helps! Let me know what you figured out.

      Hey Hassaan!
      Sorry for the late reply. I took the last month of the year off from CZcams.
      That is a great question. I've been able to bring in video and audio from an iPad, but I don't thing the ATEM will support a mix-minus feed as it only has the main program audio out. I think in this case you would have to split the audio from the Skype/Zoom call and route it into a mixer or interface. I'd prefer a digital mixer of some kind to take care of that. You may also need an audio interface specifically for the iPad/iPhone to get pro connections in and out of it.
      It'd have to be something like this amzn.to/2Xmyq3Y from PreSonus where you have the line outs in the back to bring into your mixer, and line inputs in the front to send back to the device. I hope that helps. Do you have a setup you are trying to put together?

Both these sentences (so with or without the mis-speaking and correcting) are strange to me. Amplifying and balancing are two separate things that have nothing to do with each other. So I do not understand what you are saying here. balancing and unbalancing is a method of transporting signal over a usually longer cable to cancel out interference that the signal could pic up during the transport. A pre-amp is simply an amplifier to boost the signal from microphone signal strength to line level strength. So balanced or unbalanced signal have absolutely nothing to do with the pre-amp. Very technically said the signal going into the pre-amp is an unbalanced signal because the un-balancing is done before the signal goes to the pre-amp. If you really understand what balancing is then probably that is what you meant to say I guess. But with how you said it, it sounds to me that you are combing the pre-amp with balance as being one.

    Is there a que app for the iPad that allows you to cue up both audio and video clips and cues?

      I don't know for sure. I know QLab can do that on a Mac, and I think they have a free control app for QLab. So you could potentially do that, even though it's technically running on the Mac and not your iPad.

    how would you connect the mixer to the atem? trying to figure that + audio interface connectivity out ~

    • @RyanKnowsNothing

      I think I covered this in one of my streams, but I use either a dual 1/4" mono to single 1/8" stereo cable, or a dual RCA to 1/8" and make sure the ATEM is set to Line level. The interface is similar, but you are running through the computer which can cause latency, unless you have a direct monitoring option built into your interface.

      @@RyanKnowsNothing depending on if you are trying to use a monitor output or headphone output, it should also work by using a stereo 1/4in TRS to stereo 1/8in TRS. Right?

    I appreciate your knowledge, but you really need to stick to the main topic and stop with the tangents. Present your topic, do it, then, add the extra material as needed (or, add cuts for those that want the main info). Please.

    What are you using to convert the Ipad to HDMI into The Atem?

      I am just using the Apple Lightning to HDMI adapter. It’s simple, a little finicky now and then but overall pretty solid.

      I use one that my local audio shop makes in house. That may be completely wired different than others, so I would say try a couple from Amazon and see which works best. Then you can return what didn't work. Start with this one: amzn.to/38tmjZV
      It is an amazon choice product and has decent reviews.
      Hope that helps!
