  • The Teddy Boys or Teds were a mainly British youth subculture of the mid 1950s who were interested in rock and roll and R&B music, wearing clothes partly inspired by the styles worn by dandies in the Edwardian period.

I think that the Teddy Boys and the Skinheads were the only true working class subcultures of the UK .

@@Gunnar_Gunnarson You had Mods and Rockers in the sixties , Basically motorcycle riders influenced by Brando and others and the racing motorcyclists of the time

This shows real Teddy Boys as we were, not the 70s cartoon clones like Mud and Showaddywaddy. We wore pegged trousers with turn-ups....not drainpipes as often reported. We wore black oxford shoes or Chukkas....rarely creepers. The original creepers were thinner and more stylish than the later comical ones. We mostly wore grey, light blue or black drapes, sometimes herringbone, flecked or striped. Waistcoats or tank tops were the standard. Drapes were usually second hand jackets that were too big and we got them altered at the tailors bit by bit each week. We wore Slim Jim ties or Riverboat Gambler ties.....bootlace ties were unheard of (or at least I cant remember them)
We were so different from the cartoon 70s Teddy Boys who wore bright drapes, no waistcoats, skin tight trousers that were too short, luminous green socks, ear-rings, tattoos and mutton chops sideburns and hair past the collar.

Never liked them. Quite a few of them carried flick knives.

Few of them did.....newspaper fodder. All we wanted to do was look good, chase the girls and have fun.
