Today's generation is so lucky to have and experienced the finest that this life could give. When I was in Seoul in the early 80's, the imprints of the past (like this one) in some parts of the country still visible. Their economy started to boom right after the Seoul Olympics in the mid 80's. No one could speak of other languages than Korean and some Japanese. I saw through the years how their country changed from being poor to the one of the riches in the world. Their hardwork pays off
I heard back in the days, everyone on the street would stop walking if they see a foreigner and watch them because they were so rare in Korea. You would have been one of them
@@shapalife6926 that's true. Walking past people made them turn their heads and treated you like a celebrity. I am a musician and performing at Hyatt Seoul those days. Even tho I lived in the hotel, for a year of being around there, Korean employees were still amazed of our encounter whether it was in the restaurants, shopping malls or the amusement parks. I remember eating ramen and drinking soju with korean friends when the owners of the ramen shop and the bar gave me free food and drinks. They even asked me of an autograph. Those were the days of simplicity and respect. I can tell the big difference of the then and now.
@@mariasimone1231 Oh haha asking for an autograph sounds funny to a Korean like myself who didn't experience that time. If you have a video you took back in the day, maybe you could upload it to CZcams. Many Koreans miss the 1980s which was an era of big changes, growth and chaos.

@@slyninja4444 It's up to them not me. To be honest wearing traditional attire is something that has relatively reduced in a lot of places not just Korea. The most simple answer to this would be comfort and ease for majority. I feel they all take a huge toll on time taken to wear so I feel gradually people stopped wearing them that often.

Hey everyone! I think there’s some confusion regarding what year this film was shot. This was filmed by Burton Holmes, an American traveler who coined the term ‘travelogue’. The footage seen here is a mixture of 1901 footage and 1913 footage: Holmes visited the Korean peninsula twice. The footage of the dancers from 3:33 were in 1901, as stated in Holmes’ timeline of Seoul. All other footage was a mixture of 1901/1913. Hope this helps!

Thanks for uploading this. I love those glimpses into the past. And it's completely ok to comment on why the video might be from some years later, especially if you give reasons. But it's disgusting how many trolls are spreading their hate here... Nor were people in Korea or anywhere else in the world "happy" all the time. That's a ridiculous myth as well 🙄😑!
Whatever. Are you too sensitive? Let it go. People have their opinions. And saying that people were more happy back then can be supported by the incredibly high rates of mental issues we have in society nowadays, serial killers, psycos... the trend of higher mental issues rates is something that tells a lot about how society is doing. Free market and enterpreneurs bring in innovation, we have better technology, but culture? Good luck trying to say scientifically that one is better than the other when you exclude technology and economy from the comparison.
I agree with you, people just say people back then were happy without knowing any context. In this video, I highly doubt anyone was happy because they lost their country to Japan due to the progress of the Japanese annexation. (1910)

This video is a really interesting historical time capsule. For example, I think it definitely speaks to the traditionalism of Korea at the time directly before Japanese annexation that an archery event was filmed and not a rifle marksman event.
@Babushkiable The travel film archive places this video in the 1900's decade, meaning 1900-1909, which places it still before official annexation in 1910. As far as I'm aware, major Japanese-led infrastructure projects and resource exploitation of the country didn't start until after the official annexation in 1910. This doesn't mean that the Korean Empire wasn't strong-armed by Japanese diplomats into hiring Japanese contractors to complete smaller infrastructure projects between the Treaty of 1905 that made Korea a dependent protectorate and official annexation in 1910. There is also a possibility that some telegraph and telephone lines were installed by the Japanese Imperial military in strategic locations throughout Korea to aid them in long-distance communications in the Russo-Japanese war between 1904-1905.
@@momochi9790 korea "free of qing influence" in 1895 all the way to 1905, which is when it became a Japanese protectorate
Oh, everyone. Don't distort Korean history. Japan's victory in the Sino-Japanese War of 1895 only means to remove the Qing influence from Korea. Japan still has to worry about the influence of the U.S. and Russia. Japan eliminated American influence with the Taft-Katsura agreement in 1905. A few months later, they also eliminated Russian influence with a victory in the Russo-Japanese War. This is the process by which Japan made Korea a protectorate, and Korea was not yet their protectorate. Japan finally made Korea a protectorate with compulsory Korea-Japan treaty on Nov. 5, 1905. Then, five years later, in 1910, Korea became a Japanese colony.
However, Korea's introduction of electricity facilities has nothing to do with Japan. Korea's electricity facilities were completed in 1886, and Asia's first electricity generation in 1887 to light up electric lights. This was promoted by King Gojong of Korea. It was done through direct exchanges with the U.S. And this was before the Sino-Japanese War even began. At that time, there were no electric facilities in Japan yet. I don't understand why Japan is mentioned here.
Annyeonghaseo. Korea, a great people and culture. The Korean people are respectful and easy to get to know. Lovely people. Kamsahamnida. Noho ora mai Korea (Be well Korea) from Aotearoa New Zealand.
I believe that the uploader has screwed the chronological data on this film. The film shows many Jintan ads with its iconic logo on electric poles. Jintan is Japanese candy that went on sale in 1905. For those who cannot read the language, it's hard to convey how strange it feels to be presented with a film alleged to be from 1900 and yet showing Japanese ads all over the place in the film.
This film is likely taken after Japanese annexation in 1910.

You can see Jintan(仁丹)'s electric pole advertisement at 0:08, 0:15. A similar advertisement can be seen in Japan around 1917. This film is obviously from the Japanese era.
Imports did exist in this era, and the Korean Empire had essentially been a satellite state of Japan ever since the First Sino-Japanese War, so it could still be from before Japanese annexation.
This is not 1900 but when Korea was Japan (1910 - 1945). You can see Japanese advertisements on telephone poles.
It's wrong! This 3-minutes film footage was made by Burton Holmes, An American explorer and writer who visited in Korea in 1901 and 1912. This is the oldest surviving film footage that contains the scenery of Korea. The telegraph pole ad video must be one of the 1901 or 1912 photographs taken by an American explorer, so to be exact, it must have been taken in 1912. And some of them are images from 1901.

1:15 What is he doing?
This old man is waering Hanbok, the traditional korean outfit.
Here he shows how you have to be prepared to wear the "gat"
He is preparing to wear (and did) his Gaht (a formal hat for the scholar/aristocrat class). He is old so not much hair but still he made a small topknot. It was a taboo to cut their hair because it was given by parents, hence every man had topknots. You can see how skilled he is since he had been wearing one for decades.
@@grandmestredespoulpes2435 gat made horse tail
He is tying his hair before he puts on his hat. Korean men tied their hair like that and wore a hat on top instead of cutting the hair short.
This video is not from 1900. At that time Korea no pole no train rail and no modernization.
It doesn't add up.
Korea has modernized since Japan came.
Before colonization, already rail was installed. Korea already had been started to modernized, before being colonized. There were already western schools and modern hospitals. Japanese took Korea by force. That’s all.
Actually Korean brain is much more brilliant than Japanese. But Japanese also have good points. Anyhow Japanese government is not honest in teaching history. That’s all.
I am here to tell you that's incorrect - the first tram line opened on May 20 1899 between Seodaemun and Dongdaemun. Korea was already modernizing before Japanese rule, if you want to learn more research the "Gwangmu Reforms" (I know crazy late reply)
wtf is wrong with the comment section on this video
YOU. ;)
They're gloating about a K drama bringing them here
@Cumulus Humilis those are korean though

This is not 1900 because of Video Quality maybe in 1940s or 50s I think
The costumes were so beautiful just 100 years ago... I hate how globalization destroyed culture and tradition... The creativity in thrse costumes is incredible!
im here after watching Mr. Sunshine. Best K-drama series for me
Nobody cares how you got here, just shut up and enjoy the video
Omg ! Me too
Hahaha me too
Me too xD
I loved that series. Too bad all three male leads died at the end.

The sun makes people so tanned... Incredible...
This is not due to the sun. You will see the "nobles" are very brown too and they didn't work in the sun. The further back in time you go, the darker it gets. If anything, the earth is hotter today than ever before due to global warming. ☺
Aunque no soy coreana , me parece increible su historia todo es un pais que creció desde la nada , impresionante
Japon es mas mejor que corea
You. A 'Oriental'
3:00 what a cute boy, sad to think that what im looking at is dead today
He's way older than you if you think of it.
Its not sad my friend, death is a part of life, without death, life would be meaningless
