The lost pubs of London
zhlédnutí 101Před měsícem
In the last 40 years, London has witnessed a significant decline in the number of pubs. This trend is driven by various factors, including changing social habits, rising property prices, and stricter regulations. The smoking ban implemented in 2007, along with increased alcohol duties, has also contributed to a decrease in pub patronage. Many traditional pubs have been forced to close or transf...

During the 1980s, Birmingham, the United Kingdom's second-largest city, faced a period of significant transformation and challenge. This era was marked by industrial decline, particularly in manufacturing sectors that had once been the city's economic backbone. The loss of traditional industries led to high unemployment rates and social tensions, culminating in the Handsworth riots of 1985, whi...

The 1979 United Kingdom General Election
It reminds me of when British people loved their country before it was given away by the government
This brought back some memories. Back in the 1970s, a trip to a Berni Inn was considered a good night out. Steak was regarded as a luxury item then.
It still is a treat for many people. I had some doubts about this video. I wasn’t sure that it would resonate with very many people.
Happy, simpler days. I remember them. Thanks for uploading this video.
They most certainly were.
Thank you for the kind words. Tbh, I never visited a Berni Inn, but they seemed very much “of their time”.
Some of those are just punk rockers
@@user-nl9mq1ey7d isn’t that the same thing as new wave? '
@@Gunnar_Gunnarson No. lol.
@@user-nl9mq1ey7d it looks like I’m showing my youth and inexperience. What is the difference?
We made far more cars over here than this selection of typical British Leyland cars and Ford were outselling them by the late seventies. Also Peugeot Talbot and Vauxhall had factories over here in the eighties and were joined by Nissan in 1986. The Ford Cortina was the best selling British car of the seventies and was stylish, looked excellent in E ot Ghia trim, was fairly reliable and was very easy to maintain.
The ping on chop suey bar, i used to like the chicken curry until i had a piece of chicken that still had a clump of fur on it, i am yet to see a furry chicken.
I first came to work in England in 1983 (although I had also lived there as a child in the late 60s, early 70s) and a lot of south London was still like this. I noticed a huge change though between 1983 and 1987 (Local barbers and corner shops were no longer owned/run by English people, things like that) and a further huge change between 1988 and 1995 .. and after that? well, let's just say 1000 years of history was demolished in a single decade.
If it wasn't for planners, trendy architects and their love of concrete we'd now have one of the best beautifull, classic cities in Europe.
Many of the photos from the early 1960s, not the 50s, as some have already said. But not all. It's an era I remember well.
Proud of yourself Tony? Totally rubbed our noses in it did you not?
Everywhere looks so grim and poor.
Keep voting Labour , it'll get grimmer and poorer - and it's never Labour's fault!
With all the migrants now it looks like this
A once beautiful city 😢
I was born in nineteenth forty nine and I remember this well
Those really were the days. Regards, John
The earlier shots don't look like England to me🤭😂😂
It is, I think, Brewer Street, Soho. There were some Italian restaurants there in the 1950s
If you liked this take a look at a website called ‘Spitalfields life’ . Photographs and stories pertaining to the area. Great website
I will check it out. Thanks
It was so incredibly boring then . Life is so much better now !
So, back when England had an actual, cohesive society. Enoch Powell warned us.
Leeds in the 1960s lost several historic elements, including notable Victorian architecture and traditional markets, due to modernization and urban redevelopment. Iconic buildings and old neighborhoods were often demolished to make way for new commercial and residential projects, altering the city's historic landscape and community character. This period of change marked a significant shift in the city's architectural and cultural heritage.
Many pubs in London have closed in the last 20 years due to rising property prices and rental costs, changing social habits, and reduced alcohol consumption. The 2007 smoking ban and increased competition from trendy bars and restaurants also contributed to the decline of traditional pubs.
South Wales in the 1970s was a region experiencing significant industrial change and social upheaval. The decline of coal mining and heavy industry, which had long been the economic backbone of the area, led to widespread unemployment and economic hardship. However, this period also saw a strong sense of community resilience and activism, with many locals engaging in efforts to revitalize their communities and preserve their cultural heritage. The era was marked by a blend of challenges and transformations, shaping the modern identity of South Wales.
The city is so different today.
Is that really Britain. Where did it go?
It was a different country. I don’t recognise it
Massive emigration of the talented and the plucky to the America's and the Commonwealth countries. Wasn't much place for a man of talent in this society.
Easily recognised a few of those places, and some were even taken where I lived a kid and near to where I live now! Even good to see The Dead Man's Arch getting a viewing as well! 😄
Can you list all their names
Definitely no!
R I P Birmingham like all other city's ,I was born in Liverpool 18 in 1945 in the 60 I had a and went to the cabin the birth of the Beatles served my time at fords and in a great union supporting are brothers. And sister in strikes but far better times life was easier trams great music I bought a house with my wife in 1971 now decades later the rot has set I love my city but it's getting over run not through vermin but in other ways it's a shame thanks to decades of badly run government starting with Blair opening the flood gates I feel sorry for the very you kids growing up they will have no life Christianity almost gone I wouldn't be surprised if the take over a great 2 cathedrals over the catholic and the protestant wat a city it was but there are still great Liverpool people here who will always make any one who comes here feel welcome ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The very last image of the video is Dowlais Top Merthyr . If you look closely you will see the sign “ Fish Bar” That was my brother in laws shop, I spent a lot of time there in the 70’s. It was indeed gloomy but I also have fond memories of better days back then. Thank for the video , much appreciated.
What was the fish and chips like
@@Gunnar_Gunnarson Outstanding!! Although it was quite gloomy, the people eluminated the place. Honest hard working with principles. Earthy , which quite easily could be misunderstood for rough but quite the contrary . These people and the era of have long since disappeared unfortunately and have been superseded with what we have today…………… in my humble opinion not even a pale reflection. No rose coloured spectacles, it’s just time and change. Inevitable really , but oh how good it was! Happy memories for me at Dowlais Top back then even though the video would give a completely different perspective. And to cap it all, the best fish and chips you could imagine. Once again thank you for the video, iv have saved it to my favourites. Hope you in return have enjoyed my memories of my younger days.
@@TS-bn7zt I assume the chip shop is now closed. Like a lot of these traditional establishments, such as pubs, they are all going by the wayside. I’ve done a few videos on the pubs of London.
@@Gunnar_Gunnarson Yes I believe the shop closed down some years ago. The building is still there as is the shop shown in the same frame but as you said so many pubs and small businesses have closed down which does diminish the social fabric of an area. I spend some time in London with work and have seen so many of the old cafes and pubs shut down. Sign of the times. I have subbed to your channel , many thanks 👍
I know it wasn’t all rosey then but it was definitely a better place than today even the back to back houses with neighbours all chipping in toilets and the washing done in the yards gas lighting ha, well things move on .
0:58 My first ever boss in civil engineering was a Sikh highways construction senior engineer...I did check this pic & it's not him, but he was brilliant, a gifted engineer with so much respect within the company...He would go out on site, & everyone would always want to stop & talk with him, all the plant men, foremen & gangers...A brilliant man who overcame so much with such dignity & reserve. 👌
I'm from Leeds. I loved it and love it now
It was better in those days
Did you live in those days like I dis as a child, if you did you woudn't make such a silly comment
An English city that was 100% English, not the shit hole it is today with many parts unrecognisable
What I lovely country this used to be, a shit hole now
Better then to what it is now a complete shithole you think you are in a foreign country now.
Born in the UK in 1950 these pictures are so relevant. Thanks for uploading them . ❤❤ Gymslips and school blazers. Mods or rockers.
Glad you like them!
Anyone notice there’s no rubbish in the streets and no cars cluttering the place up
Despite the bombed out bits and the obvious poverty it was a still a lot cleaner and nicer looking than certain bits of the east end nowadays.
You can't put a union jack flag up any more in London. The immigrants would be very upset and that's not allowed

Councils should learn from the philanthropists such as Robert Owen, Titus Salt, George Cadbury and Lord Leverhulme. They all built model villages that are still standing today and either UNESCO world heritage sights, or desirable places to live.
