Brilliant memories. Gateshead born and bred. Moved around UK for work but home now. Soon be 60. Back then we had nowt to show of except respect, local pride, family love. Gateshead of today with its huge changes bigger but not better. I would take those days back again no problem. I am a proud working class lad from Gateshead ....that will never change. Thank you for the memories sir.

My mate worked in Butterworths butchers shop. I was born in a house right next door to what became the Aventine club. The Five Wands became my local pub. The Ping On Chinese takeaway has been there forever. I got married in 1980 in St Cuthbert's church I'm still married to the same woman. Ah sweet memories.....

Gateshead grew exponentially in the 1800s as the coal trade built up, bringing in other industries too. But it's been a long and slow story of decline, starting from the late 1800s when Britain was overtaken by the USA and Germany. Once the coal went, Gateshead lost much of its reason to exist. I wonder if many of today's young people have any idea of all of the buildings and houses that used to stand, like the massive CWS building that used to be in Dunston.

We need to go back in time because the future is looking so very grim. Personally I’m old and glad to be because your future isn’t for me. Not fit for anyone as it’s close to 1984 and that book was horrendous.

@@Gunnar_Gunnarson Yeah, childrens television series by Tyne Tees. Filmed in late 1970's. You get to see all these streets that no longer exist, mixed in with things that are still there now, that give you a sense of where it is. Storylines sometimes leave a lot to be desired, but its charming.

I was there in the 80s. This was the nadir. Some of the shots show land where the Metrocentre was built. It’s also before the Council started putting sculptures all over the place which eventually led to the Angel of the North, the Sage etc. Given what they had to work with and the meager resources, the Council did a fantastic job. It’s not easy trying to regenerate a place like Gateshead
