      My player is Region A, so it wouldn't be able to play the 4K edition's bonus features (which are on a separate, Region B blu-ray). Do you think that its 4K disc version is still worth choosing over Criterion's blu-ray in that case? I'm not sure if the 4K is a big enough visual improvement over the Criterion to be worth sacrificing the bonuses.

    I’m surprised they didn’t release a 4K of The Servant I got the Studiocanal version last year it’s a great restoration Criterion are using the same source as they have a partnership with Studiocanal , Bogarde is brilliant in it, it’s definitely Gilliams year so far 3 films in six months. The Pasolini box set is exciting.😅

    • @DmitryAbrakhmanov
      @DmitryAbrakhmanov Před rokem

      Yeah, looks like they proposed Gilliam to upgrade all his films to 4k with his participation while he's alive and well. Can't wait for Brazil and Fear'n'Loathing 4k and maybe some new Gilliam releases like 12 Monkeys or any of Monty Python movies.

    Excited for the box set for sure! And I am also fine with the set not being more of his films. The Trilogy and Salo are already in the collection so I’m fine with them being excluded.
    Since Rules of the Game is my favorite Criterion, I’ll be glad to get the 4k upgrade but a little disappointed no new features. Glad they changed the artwork because that has drove me crazy on some of the 4ks

    I’ve been trying to purchase most of the criterion 4ks and putting my faith in their selections. So far, they haven’t let me down. Gutted that Inland Empire didn’t get a 4k but I suppose you can’t win them all 👍

    I myself am not at all impressed with The Rules of the Game cover. It sits in the same category I have put the Citizen Kane cover in "MEH" with one of Alan Tudyk's disgusted faces from "Resident Alien" next to it. Also, Momma Roma is in the collection at spine #236

    Hi Elliott. I have Criterion’s 1st release DVD of “Rules of the Game” from 2004. Though I will probably do the UHD upgrade for the restored picture, it is disappointing that the supplement package hasn’t changed in 19 years.

    Like you Elliot I already have imported the 4k Studio Canal of The Servent so won't be needing the Criterion but I think I'd like upgrade my Criterion Time Bandits Blu ray to 4k. I don't mind the 60s focus of the Passolini set. I already have The Trilogy of Life and Salo anyway so I'd rather not have doubled up. I wonder if they are planning further Passolini sets for different eras or if this is simply a one off.

  • @medikoo
    @medikoo Před rokem

    "In the Mood for Love" 4K release differed from other 4K upgrades, that also a blu-ray disc was different from one in previous Blu-ray release. It may explain the change of the cover (but that's just a guess). Still that suggests that for "Rules of the Game" we may also see an upgraded Blu-ray inside

      Would you mind elaborating on this? I don't want to be crass, but we see this same comment each month.. for years now.. and even on a month with a 9 film boxset. By what logic is a 9 film boxset with 8 new to the collection films and 2 additional stand alone new releases not "anything new"?

      @subaquaticencountersofthed8515 Před rokem +2

      @ChrisJ Fox what does that have to do with anything? Jake claims it seems like we're not getting anything new. During a month with 10 new films announced. I guess it's just me... im the crazy one. :)
      The labels serve the entire market. Not you. There is literally no such thing as a bad month. Every single month, they announce a list of titles that represent their mission statement, according to their subjective sense of what that means.
      I simply wish people would use logic in their complaints. Jake could have stated "I don't like Passolini and I have The Servant in a more premium format, Ill bet they don't give a lenticular slip for the Time Bandits upgrade, which I missed on the first print, The Rules of the Game cover, imho, is worse than the old one AND it doesn't have HDR. At least the Barry Jankins film is coming out."
      But no. Jake said, "It seems like we're getting re-releases instead of anything new."
      So.. let's count. 13 films this month. 3 are re-releases. May: 5 films, 2 re-releases. April: 8 films, 2 re-releases. March: 4 films, 1 re-release. February: 8 films, 4 re-releases. January: 7 films, 3 re-releases. 2023 so far: 45 films, 15 re-releases.
      Sorry, Jake, but this is what it looks like running a successful, pragmatic home media distribution label. In fact, I found it far more logical to complain when they weren't re-releasing titles. Both in the DVD-Bluray transition and again in the Bluray-4KUHD transition. Film is a visual medium. They could have, at one point, did, and should always stay up to date with the best way of representing that.
      As an appreciative customer base, we should bring an effort of logic and good faith to our critiques. If we can't do that, what chance do we have of them being heard?
      45 - 15 = 30 new films. In 6 months. 2 per month. Plus bonus features. I'm incredibly jealous of anyone that has so much disposable time that 2 Criterion produced releases (amongst the huge list of competitive boutique labels) per month isn't satiating.
      But carry on... xoxo

      @chrisjfox8715 Před rokem +3

      @@subaquaticencountersofthed8515 not sure why you felt the need to write all that. My point still stands. It's okay for someone to be personally disappointed for a particular set of releases if it isn't anything they want. It's natural. No one said a set of announcements had to revolve around their desires.
      I wasn't speaking on the factual reality of what is and isn't new, I was speaking on preferences..regardless of what his point was or wasnt.

    • @Crashking416
      @Crashking416 Před rokem

      @Subaquatic Encounters of the Dub Kind Jesus Christ, try writing a more petulant response. What I mean is that Criterion seems to be emphasizing 4k upgrades of films that already exist in the collection instead of adding new ones. Yes, the box set is a decent start, but this entire year has seemed a bit light in terms of new additions. In fact, other boutique labels are suffering the exact same issue. So excuse me for offering some criticism instead of effusive praise like everyone else.

    If an order from Criterion contains pre-orders, do they make you pay separate shipping for them? I've got a wishlist going in preparation for a big haul, but I'm wondering if I'll get free shipping for the pre-orders as long as the total order exceeds the free shipping threshold.

    • @medikoo
      @medikoo Před rokem

      On Amazon you can group pre-releases with in stock items, and you'll get cumulated shipping price (even though all will be shipped in different times). That's at least how I get the new CC releases from US (I'm in Europe). It's also worth to note that if you have a registered business account with Amazon, you won't get any extra VAT or custom charges for any orders below 150$.. you just pay for shipping which goes between 20-30$ for such order

    • @ModernPlague
      @ModernPlague Před rokem

      @Mariusz Nowak - The Criterion flash-sale is coming soon, and I think that's only for items bought on their own website, so I don't think I'll be using Amazon. I'm just wondering what the Criterion site's rules/policies are---I'm guessing pre-orders don't get included in the free shipping since they'd ship separately from the rest of a big order.

The fact that they just sent out $10 gift certificates to channel subscribers is another give away-that tends to happen when there is an imminent flash sale. I’ll be absolutely shocked if the flash sale isn’t on Tuesday the 21st at 12pm EST. I’d have said the same thing if you’d asked months ago, when they finally announced the date for Inland Empire, which I’m sure they anticipate to be a big seller based on the constant demand (and the fact that David Lynch titles are obviously all big sellers for them). I mean… the last Criterion flash sale was on October 11th-the day the Lost Highway 4K was released. Not a coincidence.
