This was one of the essays that got me accepted to Harvard in 2012! You guys heavily requested that I make this, so here you go! (Please forgive the fact that I'm not the best at applying lipstick.)
This essay is called "Oxymoron", and I submitted it as a supplemental essay to Harvard. It was just a normal essay--not a video essay--I just made the video so it would be more fun for you guys to listen to. I also submitted a Common App essay to Harvard, but I haven't made a video for that essay (yet!). Originally, "Oxymoron" was written in response to a prompt for Berkeley. The prompt was something along the lines of: "Explain your aspirations in life, and how your life shaped what you want to do." I liked the essay I wrote for it, so I used it for Harvard's supplemental essay (which didn't have a prompt). Those were the only two schools I submitted this essay to, and I was accepted to both of them.
The video behind the essay is a collection of semi-random shots taken around Madison, Wisconsin. I figured you guys might enjoy watching a variety of pictures as opposed to just my face, for 5 minutes.

wow, that was beautiful writing. I find it so weird that you have to write things like this to get into university in America! I would've been so stressed and probably would've cried if I'd had to do that when I was 17-18.
Most colleges here don't need anything this well done. Harvard, though, is one of the best universities in the entire world. It's a little different for that. :)

I promised myself when I get the rejection letter I will buy for myself a luxury makeup product (since I'm obsessed with makeup) as a cheer up treat. I advise to do the same if your essay looks hopeless compare to this

Isn't this kind of a bad idea? It's alright to cheer yourself up once in a while especially if you've been let down from something you really wanted but you've basically already convinced yourself that you'll fail, and even make it seem like failing is something rewarding. Fail can be rewarding if it means learning from those failures but buying yourself something nice each time comes across like encouraging poor behavior. It would probably be better to motivate yourself into believing you can do it instead of having a safety net for when you fail.

holy crap this is literally so good! As a person passionate about art but also science i love how you weaved your love of art into this and made it the reason for alot your success rather than just presenting it as another extracurricular to add to the list.

i repeated those exact words i my head after i heard them.
Although I get good grades in school, and although I've only had to write simpler, more formal essays essays, this video has showed me that I need to rethink my writing style.

I think the best way to learn how to write well is to, at first, imitate your favourite writers. I've started to do this and I've noticed how my style has changed drastically.
When doing so, keep the same sentence structure; keep the same 'voice'; use some of the vocabulary to see how you can apply it in future writing.
By doing this for not only one writer, but many writers, you will start to mould a very unique style, combined with these new writers, and your previous style. This will shape your writing.
Although it will take some time, it will certainly be worthwhile in constructing more thoughtful essay responses.
I had piles of essays due to submit for my college application but here I was, watching some CZcams videos and chilling just because I was not feeling moody enough to work on them. But watching this video of yours just made me feel like I need to write something. Not because I want to get into a college so bad but I think I realized I was pushing away the thing I loved to do. So I watched this video a few months back wayyyyy before beginning my college apps. Only a week before early action was due, I had written 3 harvard supplement essays that I worked on a ton but for some reason I just felt were not right. Spring actually sent it a timely manner this time (as opposed to when I was trying to get it sent to an address in Europe few months ago).
It took me three times to understand the meaning and once I did I was blown away.
I thought my college app. essay was decent enough until I watched this video... literally made me "Be Humble". What an amazing essay :D !!!
