Did you just use them the way they come from the factory? I’m gonna go buy the bolts to put them on today. Thanks for the info in the comments and on your videos, definitely helps out someone who is new to this.

Been using a custom engineered system similar to this since 1989 for SCCA race cars. Our trailers have been inspected by motor carrier cops in several states with never an issue. The only problem we have had in over 30 years was a flat tire that allowed the strap to slip off the tire. No harm was done as the remaining three straps did their job.

I have the same system for the exact same reasons. Only difference in technique is I have both ratchets facing each other technically pulling the car into the center of the trailer.
On a few occasions in the past, I have found that despite how tight I ratcheted the strap and how many wraps around the drum, the strap worked its way off of the wheel. At that time (on a different SxS) I solved that problem using a bungee cord to hook onto the strap at the top of the tire and ran it through the wheel and hooked it to the other side of the strap keeping it centered. Basically pinching the strap between the hooks of the bungee cord. I later moved to using adjustable size wheel bonnets.
In the end, it's a great way to secure your side by side and let the suspension of your buggy do the work to suspend your trailer. Especially if you have a solid axle with no leaf springs.
Ps. If you have finally gotten that larger trailer, I hope you kept the small one for the times you want to go out with just one buggy.

I use the same system but have made a few adjustments over the years.
    1. have at least one complete wrap around the drum of the rachet otherwise the strap can come lose
    2. use a rubberized sleeve or 2-3 smaller sleeves that the strap goes through and rest against the tire to create a bit more friction to prevent any possible strap slip

Only problem with that Erickson setup and others like is if you use your trailer for more then just trailering your atv/sxs it’s nice to have a flat floor to be able to haul things like plywood or drywall. I do the same thing but with 1/4 inch drings from amazon that has a bracket with two holes to bolt to trailer floor .I place one dring in the front and rear of each tire then put a ratchet strap over the centre of each tire and tighten each strap down . My method does the same thing and allows me to fold the dring over and still have a flat floor

I have 2 other larger trailers that I usually use. This week I picked up some barn siding and it would have been nice to use my smaller sxs trailer but I didn’t because I didnt want to have to put boards in so that the wheel chocks wouldn’t dent the siding. I think next time I will go with the flat adjustable track. I like the chocks because it does hold the machine in place better and really helps loading but I would like my trailer to be more versatile.

One thing to consider is to lock the suspension from moving. The suspension moving while towing is essentially wear and miles on your shocks. Maybe it's no big deal. I'm sure there is controversy over it. Lol

    • @FilthyKnobsOffRoad
      @FilthyKnobsOffRoad  Před 2 lety

Thank you! Yeah I think it’s easiest on the suspension not to have it compressed when strapped down. I’m sure the suspension moving might cause some wear though. When they ship new units they are strapped down pretty tight. Who knows I guess.

  • @TheOutdoorAdventureTeam

I just use them on the rear tires. Sometimes they bounce off the tires but my sxs never moved with it being chocked.

I had one bounce off recently but the other 3 held tight. I noticed this happened when I lined the machine up poorly in the chocks and the tire was a bit off center. Yeah when I got everything bolted on and I stood back and looked. I quickly realized that my trailer was now useless for anything other than hauling our toys. This would be a stand alone system if they put the wheel chock on a hinge, and if not in use, you could lay it flat.

I have not had any issues with them. I have made probably 20+ trips with them so far at about 3 hours per trip and they have worked really well. I have had one come off recently but it was due to the latch not being properly clicked in. I have heard some issues with over the wheel straps but I believe the chocks help keep the wheels in place and having all 4 tires tied down instead of 2 as the kits intend helps keep the strap on the wheels. I do wish that they went around the wheels on each side like a basket style over the wheel tie down to make it just look safer.

    • @FilthyKnobsOffRoad

I really dont think so. The YXZ is around 64" wide and if the trailer is actually 5ft (60") wide then that is definitely too narrow. I believe the trailer length is too short short as well. The yxz is just over 10ft. It really depends on the actual measurements of your trailer and what it has for sides or railing. My 6x12 trailer is about as small as I would want to go. It is really tight around the gate opening of the trailer and there isnt much room on either side of the yxz so you have to be pretty precise driving up on the trailer.
