  • Kirk Douglas, Edward G. Robinson, Claire Trevor and director Vincente Minnelli bring their considerable style and expertise to Rome for a look at the wild Italian film scene of the early ’60’s in TWO WEEKS IN ANOTHER TOWN (1962). Big, colorful, splashy and highly melodramatic, it’s an inside look at the wild life and dirty deals that make up the movie business. With a sumptuous score by David Raksin, it’s the perfect summer escape.

I had always wanted to see this and it came up here on YT.
It is the stupidest movie that Minnelli ever made.
Robinson and Trevor were wonderful in "Key Largo."
Here they are, at best, as a couple of screaming, sad bores.
Besides the interior of The Excelsior Hotel where
I stayed many years ago, it was almost incomprehensibly
      vulgar.

Could you do a review of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton? Have you thought of doing Nicholas & Alexandra (1971)? N&A is the last of the big scale 1960's epics produced by Sam Speigel. The score by Richard Rodney Bennett is spectacular (Oscar nominated).
The cast alone is worth a revisit- Michael Jayston, Janet Suzman, Tom Baker, Harry Andrews, Timothy West, Jack Hawkins, Sir Michael Redgrave, Eric Porter, Michael Bryant, Irene Worth, John Wood, Ian Holm, Brian Cox, Julian Glover, AND Lord Laurence Olivier!

Also, this movie kinda became a prophecy for Minnelli's own career didn't it?
Vincente and Liza's "A Matter of Time" would wind up in crisis, executives skimped on the budget, the casting was in chaos, they filmed in Cinecitta and Vince was getting old and hard to get his ideas across to Italians, and eventually the movie bombed and he never directed another movie.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  Před 2 lety +1

He had similar problems with all the films he made after "Gigi". This one was yanked out of his hands and re-edited, as was " Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse" right after. They had a big turn around at MGM at this time and the new heads in the front office decided they wanted only family fair. However, even in the films that werent as successful, there is always something gorgeous to see in every Minnelli film. Sometime, when you have a moment, go to CZcams and watch his Oscar accetance speech where he ...seemingly unwittingly...keeps giving the finger to the establishment throughout. It's hilarious and you know was no accident. Happy Summer! Steve

Lee Grant is a fabulius New York city based actress who camne from the stage to Hollywood, recfreating her original role in 'Detective Story" that she'd done on Broadway. She won the Cannes Film festival Best Acrress Award for Detective Story as well as an oscar nomibnatin for "Best Supporting Actress" , she lost to Kim Hunter for "A Streetcar named Desire". She was then Black Listed during the McCarthy Era witch hunts of the '60's and din't make a comeback until she won an Emmy in the mid-60's for the TV version of Peyton Place. She then got back into movies with " valley Of The Dolls" and " In The Heat Of The Night" and subsequently earned another three Oscar nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress in 1975 for " Shampoo" as well as a Best Documentary Oscar. She is now 94 and lives in New York. I've talked wih her on the street occasinally and she 's still very sharpe and outspioken. Her Memoir " I Said Yes to Everything" is one of the best showbiz autobiographies. Love Lee Grant.

Hey Steve, I’m trying to remember the name of the movie about a Jewish man who was ashamed of being Jewish. I thought the actor was Gregory Peck. I remember that his name was Greene, but he shortened it as he didn’t want people to know he was Jewish and I think his real name was Greenbaum. It wasn’t Gentleman’s agreement, as that story is in reverse and I’m unsure if the actor was Gregory Peck. I would love it if you could give me the name of that movie. Thanks. 😃😉👍

The clash between Claire Trevor's Clara and E.G.Robinson's Maurice Kruger is deliciously trashy.
One minute she's clucking and he's nonchalantly brushing her repeated phrases off and pointing out misused words, another minute she's still cluckling and HE's cussing up storm, and immediately after this she tries to overdose on sleeping pills to kill herself and his reaction? "We'll just have to have your stomach pumped again; you know how sick that makes me", so she's done this to a routine!
He clearly cares enough about her to keep her from the worst of breakdowns, but doesn't care enough to stop his affairs.
EVEN BETTER, later when they're sleeping and he's suddenly dreading his future, and she cuddles him and gives her googly sweet talks as if he were her baby child!
This whole dynamic where they cannot just talk facts to each other anymore is SO sick and I love it.
