Following “a calling,” Oscar winners Loretta Young and Celeste Holm play nuns, who emigrate to a small New England town of Bethlehem from war torn France and attempt to establish a hospital on the grounds of a stable owned by eccentric artist Elsa Lanchester in director Henry Koster’s COME TO THE STABLE (1949). Taken from a story by Clair Boothe Luce ("The Women”), the cast also includes Hugh Marlowe, Thomas Mitchell and Dooley Wilson. A lovely and lighthearted, warm and cozy comedy for the holidays. Yes, she was a hot number and damn good actress in the early 1930s. She was barely 20 years old 1933. Have you seen "Midnight Mary" from 1933? She was gorgeous! Employee's Entrance made in 1933 also was great.

Fascinating story involving Great Depression hard times, crime, and really good acting by Loretta Young. I know Loretta Young was beautiful her entire life, but I have never seen her more mesmerizingly beautiful as she was in Midnight Mary. Hope you get a chance to see it.
"Come to the Stable" and "The Bishop's Wife" are two of the best Christmas movies. The each have a great message that comes across with charm, grace and humor. They demonstrate faith that works with whatever your beliefs happen to be. Its a shame that neither is shown very often.
I bought a bunch of "The Bishop's Wife" and have given them out as presents. I think this one will be next.

"The Bishop's Wife" is my all-time favorite holiday movie. That combination of Cary and Loretta. and the comc skill of David Niven simply can't be beat. I am watching the movie right now. And for me, the tennis scene is my favorite, especially at the end when everyone asks Sister Scholastica ( played Celeste Holmes) where she learned to play so well. The Sister makes the inference that she was on French Olympic team in 1939, but is no longer that person. It is both touching and humbling at the same time.

Steve! Johnny! So nice to settle into 12 minutes and 34 seconds of sanity, where the movies still rule and politics and covid can just go peddle their papers. My father was a Catholic school survivor (as was I, but this is his story.) He was a wiry little Italian/Portuguese/Filipino kid, who tried to overcome his slight stature and swarthy complexion by becoming the class clown. It worked. He was popular both with his classmates as well as the nuns who taught them all. Dad was an altar boy, of course - smart and funny - and could charm the knickers off a nun...until he squared off against Sr. Schoolastica, his fifth grade teacher. She was the Marquise de Sade in six yards of black serge and wing-tip orthopedic shoes. She never missed an opportunity to embarass, degrade, or bitch slap with her ruler any random kid with the misfortune of being within striking distance. My poor dad never got over Sr Schoolastica or her ruler of doom. Happy Holidays!🤪

You inspire me to add to my collection of vintage film posters and Hollywood memorabilia...my most recent addition is a wonderful portrait of Josephine Dillon, Clark Gable's first wife that hung in the Pasadena Playhouse. It was painted in the early thirties by Luvena Vysekal. Its fabulous.

In the last years of Loretta Young's life she daily visited the Desert Hospital Chapel in Palm Springs to visit the sick and then say the full Rosary in the small Desert Hospital Chapel, which is now named for her. Loretta Young's daughter Judy Crane sponsored the dedication event after the death of her mother Loretta Young and was there the day the Chapel was enlarged and named for her mother.
I was fortunate enough to visit there one day and was able to sit in the small Chapel with about 8 other people and say the Rosary with Loretta Young leading the Rosary. She was obviously older but still had the voice and beauty of her youth. If possible, Loretta Young would have a Priest come and offer a Mass after the saying of the Rosary. She never failed in her presence at the Hospital during the week in visiting the sick and ill and for the saying of the Rosary after the visits.
Bishop Fulton J. Sheen told Loretta Young to just say a decade of the Rosary and she would eventually be able to say the entire Rosary which happened to be true for Loretta Young in the last years of her life.
Loretta Young's visits to Desert Hospital certainly made a great many people much happier especially those with serious illnesses and oftentimes near death.
She primarily attended St. Louis Catholic Church in Cathedral City (adjacent to Palm Springs) which also was a popular church with the Sinatra family and also her friend Jane Wyman. Frank Sinatra's mother had a statue of St. Anthony donated to the Hospital, but it later restorations at the church, the statue of St. Anthony was taken down and given back to the Sinatra family. During this time Loretta Young was married to Jean Louis whose death marked the last husband in her life.

I don't know how many people know this, but Lorrettas sister was married to Ricardo Montalban. During the fifties when Loretta had her tv show she had him on alot and it kept his career going.
He married the youngest one, Georgiana. She was gorgeous and they had a very happy marriage. Thank you for watching.Best; Steve

Mom worked for D. Zanuck on this film. She was a script supervisor for him since the late Thirties.
Had nothing good to say about about him, but perhaps because of this film, Mom developed a lifelong respect for the Catholic religion !
I hadn’t been nor yet, but she always revered Loretta Young!
Loretta and he had a prickly relationship at best. Zanuck was undoubtedly a piece of work. How great that your mother was there during this time. It's fascinating for film buffs, as Fox did alot of 'message" movies during this period. Both Loretta and Celeste fought with Zanuck. Holm bought out her Fox contract just after this film was made and then Zanuck, who didn't care for her because she kept going on suspencion rather than do whatever projects he tossed her, had to turn around and pay through the nose to borrow her back for "All About Eve". It is a real treasure.
And while Loretta Young is great in her lead role, to me, the most wonderful aspects of the film are the understated, masterful performances rendered by the numerous talented Characters Actors.
Of course, Stars are vital in any Movie; however, where would "Witness For The Prosecution" be without Elsa Lancaster?
And where would "All About Eve" and "Rear Window" be without Thelma Ritter?

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ For Thelma Ritter, I suggest the movie "Father Was a Fullback" (1949) also starring Fred MacMurray, Maureen O'Hara, Betty Lynn, Natalie Wood, Jim Backus (good comedy, lots of family domestic scenes). Also, "The Mating Season" (1951), in which she plays a more major role (gets more screen time). I personally like the "Fullback" movie best, due to content, even though Ritter is "just" part of the supporting cast. It's one very important part in this ensemble piece (of excellent acting, and good writing), IMHO, and this film doesn't seem to get much high-level professional criticism.

Dear Steve, I've had to wait till the evening to write to you about your (as always) lovely review of this film: the sun is low at this time of the year and hits my computer screen so I can't see anything till after six o'clock. The real miracle about this film is that it manages to avoid being too sweet and sugary, which would kill it, at least for me. The jeep driving is familiar (English nuns are demon drivers), and the attitudes of everyone the nuns meet, from the overwhelmed (always wonderful) Elsa Lanchester, to the sceptical bishop, to the enraged neighbour, make such a perfect contract to the nuns' faith and optimism that I can accept the ending (although I secretly prefer the sublime "Lillies of the Field" which was to come much later). I think Loretta Young was a superb actress and loved "The Farmer's Daughter", but flinch from the swear box. I'm an old lady now (although not "little" - I'm still 5'8") so I'm expected to be swear-free, but I spent too much time with writers and publishers' reps who might as well have had Tourettes; for appearances' sake, I just swear among friends. And incidentally, re "Rachel and the Stranger" (Loretta great again), William Holden was indeed smokin' hot, but he came with the child from Hell. Would you really stick around to end up embalmed with him in the cellar? Because that boy was obviously going to grow up to be the model for the Anthony Perkins' character in "Psycho". Thank you for wishing me well in this Autumn weather, but yesterday was like "Apocalypse Now" because of the helicopters and the marches. Dear Friend Alida; You always make me chuckle. Thanks you for that. At this stage of the game, I think we have earned the right to swear as much as is required! So...bitch away! As to this film, I think the fact that it's from a story by Claire Boothe Luce, who wrote "The Women" helps it. Thoiugh Celeste Holm makes me break out in a break in a rash a bit. I tend to veer away from movies about nuns....except for "Black Narcissus" , which is a mad nun dream come true. I loathe " Going My Way" and " The Bells Of St Mary's" .Leo McCary's catholicism and piety works my last nerve. Even "An Affair To Remember", which I liked better as "Love Affair", has that sickening song, those ugly Hollywood kids sing, which makes me automatically run for the loo. I probably would feel that way about " The Song Of Bernadette", except that I love nasty old Gladys Cooper' s bitter nun, and gruff old Charlie Bickford ''s skeptical priest.Not to mention the fact that Linda Darnell is the Vision which also makes me laugh . But, then again, who better? I love "Rachel and the Stranger "and ,to put things bluntly. I would have traded that obnoxious kid to the Indians for a spare teepee and a possible three way with Holden and Mitchum. Sorry, but.... " Can't help lovin' those men of mine." As for Loretta, also known as " The Steel Butterfly", I've found that it's often those who have the most to hide that hide behind self-rightousness. I suspect her guilt over raising her's and Gable's illegitimate daughter as an orphan she adopted, had more than alot to do with her behavior. It's getting cold here and Halloween is upon us. I'm set to watch; " The Haunting", " The Innocents" and my next TOQ episode is " The Day Of The Triffids", don't look now, but my Brit influence is showing! Have a wonderful evening. Steve

Steve, the HBO Max series Ghosts has a wonderful episode exploring an unexpressed gay love story during WW2, which is intensely tender and sensitive, as well as beautifully performed and very cinematic. The whole show is lovely and charming, but worth checking out for that ep in particular. I know your show is dedicated to movies, but I feel you'd appreciate how well this was done.
