    Classic Movie Review: Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint are on the run from spies, the CIA and possibly each other in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic cross country tale of suspense; “North By Northwest" (1959). With a supporting cast headed by a suave James Mason as the head of the spy ring, Martin Landau as his gay henchman and Jessie Royce Landis as the comic relief, playing Grant's wisecracking mother, it’s a witty, suspenseful, ride with a fabulous score by Bernard Herrmann, that will keep you on the edge of your seats from beginning to end. NxNW is easily one of the greatest thrillers of the last century. And that crop duster scene is Hitchcock at his zenith; the long, long period of nothing happening (Cary Grant just hanging around by the road) really builds the suspense to a tense crescendo before the action starts. Movies today don't seem to do things like that, use silence and time to create anxiety in the audience.
    Thanks for a fun review, as always ... and a very Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  Před 4 lety +2

      I agree, Eduardo. They don't allow the silence of suspense to build. Everything is baded on short attention spans and instant gritification. Thanks for watching!

    One of my very favorite films I have seen countless times. Bernard Herrmann’s film score was outstanding, especially the edgy iconic overture during the opening credits. Steve, Discovering your reviews has become a bright spot in my day. Watching these reviews of some of my favorite movies is like reminiscing with a friend who loves them as much as I do. Curious to know what your favorite Hitchcock is. There are so many I enjoy, but adore 39 Steps, Rebecca, Shadow of a Doubt, Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho and this one. To be honest there's hardly a Hitchcock that I don't enjoy - with the exception of Under Capricorn. You are such a talent and your love of what you do shows.

      Hey Pete; Happy New Year. Just catching up with my comments due to holiday madness, so please forgive me. I love "Vertigo best". It's also my favorite film in general, followed closely by Poell & Pressburger's "Black Narcissus". Now, back to the Hitchcock's. Over the years, I've become quite partial to what are considered the 'second tier" Hitchcocks. Three of these being ; ' Stage Fright", which I love for the remarkable British cast and for the thing he was critisized for most at he time of release, being the lie told through the use of a "falshback', which I think is an absolutely brilliant concept and so typical of his genius. .I love " I Confess" for the performance of Monty Clift, who I think gave one of the most insightful performances in any Hitchcock film, despite Hitch's not gettimg along with him and disliking the "method" and finally I love love "The Paradine Case', with it's star studded cast, the Selznick glamour and the money that was poured into the production. I also am obesessed with enigmatic Alida Valli in this and "The Third Man". and Louis Jourdan is breathtaking. I liked Hitchcock's work with Selznick, because the results were exactly what you expecetd them to be, high class productions in the grand Holywood manner. Hope you had lovely holidays. Thanks so much for watching and Happy New Year! Best Wishes; Steve

    @alidabaxter5849 Před 4 měsíci

    Dear Steve, I have postponed and postponed commenting on this fabulous film (and your lovely review), simply because it's the last Hitchcock on your website that I have left to talk about with you. I hope sometime you will review an earlier Hitchcock or two ("The Lady Vanishes", which I'm enormously fond of, or even "Foreign Correspondent" - Joel McCrea, and the scene with the umbrellas!) but "North by Northwest" is so incredibly glossy, so slick, from the very first moment of that wonderful score, (and you're absolutely right about the titles - I've never seen anything like them) that you're taken over completely and the film never lets you go. I love the wit of it - Cary Grant, drunk, on the phone to his mother from the police station, "No, they didn't give me a chaser". And doesn't Hitchcock love putting him in danger in a fast car, with Ingrid Bergman in "Notorious", with Joan Fontaine in "Suspicion", with Grace Kelly in "To Catch A Thief". Eva Marie Saint is lovely and sexy beyond belief, and I wish she'd taken Hitchcock's advise to play more roles like this one, because she's sensational. And I'm a pushover for James Mason, who just makes me curl up at the edges, so I adore every moment, from first to last. What I love so much about your reviews is that you're not only so knowledgeable, you're so funny. And funny is difficult. Long ago I was known for writing funny books, both non-fiction and fiction, which got very good reviews here and sold a lot of copies (hence the author tour of Australia), and when a journalist asked my mother what I was like when I was writing she said, "She cries all the time!" Have a lovely Easter and best wishes, Alida

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  Před 4 měsíci

      Dear Alida;
      I simply adore this film. It was so wise of him to follow the disturbing complexities of "Vertigo" with this light, cross country chase. A return to the days of "The 39 Steps". I 've never felt that it got the recognition that it should. I think perhaps because Hitchcock made it all look so easy. This film has everything and it was one of the last collaborations with his terrific production team and Bernard Herrmann. I love sinister, blue eyed Marin Landau ; " Call it my woman's intuition". And, of course Jessie Royce Landis ; ' Roger, PAY the two dollars!" Hilarious. Mason is so suave and sinister." That wasn't sporting at all, using real bullets." And Cary should have been nominated. It's the Cary Grant of all Cary Grant characters! Only Cary coud take this penny pinching, perrenial bachelore/curmudgeon and make him simultaiously sexy and funny at the same time. It's why he's always been my favorite classic film actor, he could do it all and better than anyone. Cary could do it all. The Lady Vanishes " and " Foreign Corrospondent" are both on my list. I tuck them away because I don't want to run out of terrific Hitchcock's. Your mother should have known that the funniest people are often the saddest underneath. I'm currentkly reading a biography of the great Margaret Rutherford, who had such a targic childhood and suffered from mental illness throughout her life. Yet, she was remarkable, cherished and remembered as one of the greatst, natural, comic actresses to ever hit the screen or grace the stages of the world. I always think you are very funny and find myself giggling at your astute obserbations and ever ready wit. Have a lovely Easter as well! Always lovely to hear from you. " Steve

    It's the United Nations Building, not the Gulf+Western Building. The key scene, Grant's character being mistaken as George Townsend's murderer, was set in the UN (well, actually, it was shot on a set, but it's meant to take place at the UN). Apparently, the exterior shot of Grant entering the UN Building was stolen by Hitchcock's crew. The camera was concealed in a carpet shampooing truck parked across the street.

I'm also getting recommendations for videos from channels I also thought had disappeared - YT had also unsubscribed me from them as well. Could it be because of the latest brouhaha about the COPPA thing, YT changed it's algorithm? In any case, good to see Tired Old Queen at the Movies videos again!

    The REAL Mr. Townsend killed at the U.N. is Philip Ober, Kerr's nasty husband in From Here to Eternity and in real life Vivian Vance's abusive husband. Roger Thornhill's secretary in the beginning. If you are a N by NW fan, you know that Roger's secretary is named Maggie and that she is played by Doreen Lang who was one of the robbed Insurance office secretaries in Hitchcock's The Wrong Man as well as prominent (at Hitch's insistence) in several of his TV shows. He gave her her best role as the hysterical mom who thinks Tippi Hedren is 'evil' in the the diner scene inThe Birds.
