Geraldine Fitzgerald is one of my all-time favorites. As a kid, I first saw her 5-minute cameo in the movie "Harry and Tonto." Her performance as a woman with Alzheimer's blew me away. Baby Queen that I was, I immediately had to know all about her life! So sad that she died in 2005 age 91 in NYC, following a long battle with that very disease. 👃🏾
Wasn't she wonderful? I once sat next to her on a bus and thought to myself; " There are a thousand questions I'd like to ask you. What was it like working with Bette Davis, John Garfield, Laurance Olivier and most importantly, Sydney Greenstereet and Peter Lorre?" Instead I said; " Lovely weather." And in that ever so slight Irish brogue she replied; " Isn't it." I love New York! Happy Summer! Steve
I love this movie and the fade out at the end is worth every teardrop. Oh, and the Davis impersonations are always on point.😂

Two years ago I was very ill and was at the hospital for a month. My friend came over and was very concerned. I told him I want to go like Bette in Dark Victory. Music, lighting and all. Silence. Then we laughed and laughed.
We’ll it didn’t end that way, so there. I’m still here, doing fine and watching (not so) Tired Old Queen at the Movies.

I think that Dark Victory was the beginning of the film period where Bette Davis began to act like Bette Davis. With her Bette Davis eyes, mannerisms and overacting camp style. Bette Davis was much loved by gay men, impressionists, and female impersonators and this film shows her Bette Davis style on screen which made you either love her or hate her. Her last Oscar was won just the year before and there's a reason why she never won again.
@@michaelverbakel7632 Yes, but not for the reason you imply as witness her subsequent performances in The Letter, The Little Foxes, and Now Voyager among others worthy of AMPAS recognition. I tend to agree with Pauline Kael's description of Dark Victory itself as a "gooey collection of clichés," but her theatrical style here serves her well. I also remember reading somewhere that after All About Eve, she never had another great movie, but she did have great scenes; I found her sequence with the doll before the mirror in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane to be amazing, as well as her emotional breakdown as an embittered mother not exactly welcoming back her dying daughter in one of her later TV movies "Strangers" opposite Gena Rowlands. Unfortunately, she was her own worst enemy wounding her career with ego-and money driven poor judgement while alienating too many in the industry. No, she never won again after 1938, but it was not because she was incapable of subtlety or nuance.
Oh, Steve! This brought back memories…..in the 1970’s, in Houston, at the old River Oaks movie theatre…..every summer there was a Bette Davis Film festival. They always presented Dark Victory and Now Voyager back-to-back. My best bud and I always went and took a box of Kleenex! Talk about flowing tears!!
River Oaks, it doesn't get any better in Houston than this neighborhood.
My first day in New York when I moved here in 1976, I spent at the Thalia revival theatre watching a double bill of "Laura" and "All About Eve". There was no going back!Happy memeories! Steve

A few years ago, my friend Mark invited me to watch this film as part of the TCM Film Festival, and it was screened to a packed house with the younger Carradine actor as host, and he praised Bette Davis as his favorite and supreme actress of all time, and it made me wonder, what the possibilities were with that! 😂 Anyway, many young people were there, who had never seen a Davis film, and we were seated next to a few women and men dressed to the hilt, 1940's style with jewelry and hats, won't forget that! When the final couple of minutes of the film arrives, the fire alarm begins to scream, the film shuts, and we're all herded like cattle outside, and all those young people were screaming " What Happenned, anyone tell us, please ". It turned out a false alarm, and all I screamed back was "Rent or buy the DVD, It's worth it!" Fabulous film, but what an experience! 👍

"Dark Victory" is my favorite Bette Davis film, too. She plays every emotion in this one, from flippant socialite to that great "Prognosis Negative" scene. I love that moment gardening when she senses the end coming on. I also always loved the underscoring in her films, especially this one, and never knew she didn't. Ronald Reagan is a hoot, though I had trouble accepting Bogart as Irish. A wonderful film.

I’ll always think of my late mom whenever I watch the wonderful “Dark Victory”. It was her very favorite Bette movie, and years ago after my first time watching it with her on a Saturday afternoon with both of us in tears at the end, it remains my favorite Bette performance always. IMO she was at her most beautiful here, as well. The woman had class, class, class. Love your dishy background stories on the film, too. As always, a fun & great review, & your Bette is 100%! Oh my goodness. I haven’t seen this in years. When I was a boy in the 1960s, these melodrama would be shown on tv locally on Saturday afternoons. Mom and me would be crying by the end of Dark Victory (I was a sensitive boy 😁). Such great memories for me. Steve, you can imagine the bawl fest when Susan Hayward exclaimed “I want to live!” in the film of the same name. Bette was a hoot. I always look forward to your reviews.

Her films from this period are iconic. For me, I would put this at #2 after Now Voyager as #1. But I'm a die hard fan and watch them all whenever they are on TV.

This review gave me such a lift! I think its Ronnie Reagan's best film. He is always great as 'someone's friend'. As a matter of fact when they told Daryl Zanuck that Reagan was running for governor, Zanuck said "NO that's all wrong, James Stewart should be the governor and Reagan his best friend."
I think "Kings Row" is his best work, He was perfect as the town rascal, sexy, funny and fun, then he and Ann Sheridan break your heart at the end. Steve
Of course you are right, I just can't bear to watch Charles Coburn's sadistic role - it is monstrous, terrifying and miles ahead of its time.
@@poetcomic1 He was far worse in "Kings Row" as a sadistic turn of the century doctor who performs unnessesary operations on people without anesthesia. Then he could turn and give the most delightful comic turns ike "The More The Merrier". I always loved him! Thanks for watching! Steve
I like Ronald Reagan in this film much better than Bogart, which would be a shock to say in any other movie. Too bad they badly miscast and wasted Bogart - the only flaw in an otherwise superb production.
@@beechnut8779 His role was meant to be drawn and acted in broad simple strokes. It is a secondary role but his particular straightforward pash for her and his appreciation of her character is a nice touch unlike anyone else in the movie.

I have always loved this movie, even though it makes me weep at the end. Second to this one I love Now Voyager. I think the costuming, the sets, and the wonderful Miss Davis are perfect in this film. NOW VOYGER is my all time favorite. Such a good story even if over the top. The final scene when DAVIS resolves all the tension makes my heart feel warm.
And Claude Rains was among the finest actors in the 20th Century, I think. I love his acting in 'Deception.' That dinner scene...😌
@@1313Siemens my father as a kid got one of the prop bikes from INVISIBLE MAN through my grandmother who worked at COLUMBIA. Claude Rains usually a supporting actor was just the best . everything he did. And that reminds me of FREDERIC MARCH another bbiiiggg star of that era

I love almost any Bette Davis film, the over dramatic style of her early films was the style of the day. I love one of her worst films IN THIS OUR LIFE ( where she famously says Peter ), but Now Voyager is my all time favorite ! ALL ABOUT EVE has to be her best of all though! Just between you and I, I love "In This Our Life" as well. High melodrama always appeals. My favorite Bette's are the three she made with Willie Wyler; "Jezebel", " The Letter" and "The Little Foxes". I love Gene Tireney too.Thanks for watching! Steve
I actually like her film In This Our Life! Her over the top performance suits the character she plays which is rotten to the core! She does not care who is hurt as long as she gets her way. There also is a hint of insestual feelings of her uncle towards her which she tries to take advantage of when she is in trouble.

Dear Steve, I adore watching your brilliant performances as Bette Davis. I remember seeing the interview that you quoted, when she refers to "Little Ronnie Regan", and although I agree that I'm not sure, either, whether he's one thing or the other in "Dark Victory", aren't most gay men more intelligent than he was? I'm not getting at American politicians - you could use our lot in England to make fire by rubbing two of them together. But back at this excellent and very touching film, I think it gives Bette Davis a huge range of emotions to express, the opportunity to show the development of a character from that of a spoiled girl to a very brave young woman, and she does it superbly. The ending breaks your heart, and it's so perfectly underplayed that you care all the more. Geraldine Fitzgerald is marvellous, and I'm only uncertain about Humphrey Bogart, because I don't know where that accent came from. (By the way, I'd love to know what you think of "Stand In" which is an old favourite of mine - Leslie Howard, adorable Joan Blondell and Humphrey Bogart.) Incidentally, re your experience of sitting next to Geraldine Fitzgerald on a bus and not saying all you wanted to say, I completely identify. I had a huge admiration of Chita Rivera because I'd seen the first London West End stage production of "West Side Story". Out of the blue, when I was in my thirties I found myself sharing the car with her back to our de luxe hotel from a terrible chat show in Melbourne, Australia, and all we could do was to agree that we'd never been as cold or as tired in our lives, and we cried on each other's shoulders! Melbourne's climate is like the Antarctic, and Chita Rivera kept wailing, "The trams, the trams!" The hotel was on a sort of Park Lane and traditional trams ran up and down outside all day and all night. So I didn't say all I normally would have, but I loved her all the more for being so human with me. Very best wishes dear Steve from Alida
Thanks for the sweet/ funny anecdote about Chita. As for "Little Ronnie", when it came to gay characters at thet time, you were either the Clifton WEbb acerbic type or the Edawrd Everett Horton beduddled and curmudgeonly. One of the few exceptions is the delightful rex O'Malley in " Camille" and " Midnight", who is wise, caring and funny. like Reagan in this because he walks a fine line so you don't really know what he is, except that he's a beautiful , drunk who will probably be taken care of my either rich men or women for as long as his looks lats and then will probably end badly. I've known many of them gay and straight. Alcoholism= makes no distinctions, exceptions and takes no prisoners. "Dark Victory" is Bette at her jumpiest. She can 't sit still. She was that way in " In This Our LIfe" as well. I like it , but it's not one of my favorites. I like Bette with fire in her eyes and revolver in hand. Happy Holidays! Always nice to hear from you. Interesting observation about Reagan because I just read an article today on Politico about his queer ring of advisors during his presidential campaign, the near scandal and his own potential indiscretions. Anyway, great review! Dark Victory was my first of many Bette Davis films, and what a way to start!

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I understand you were talking about his character and I agree, it's just with that article and then your video popping up in the same hour led me to connect the two. I've always been sus about the old Gipper, from his long history in Hollywood and especially in that era, his performance in this and King's Row which both seem kissed with a touch of sugar, his freak out when Ronny Jr started being perceived as gay before he officially came out, his White House handlers forcing him to dress up like a cowboy to butch him up in publicity photos, his slow move to acknowledge the aids crisis because "you can't help the gays without being one" paranoia, calling his wife Nancy "Mommy" and on and on.
I actually came to know Bette Davis through my research I was doing on Reagan for a play I was writing about pop culture politics and the Right's deification of him. The dots are there if you're willing to make the connections. Check out the article, it's a long but fascinating read. Anyway, that's just my take. Have a good day! Steve - I've only recently stumbled on this channel, and I'm hooked - I binged about 12 of your reviews randomly and will certainly keep at it. Great insight, and the imitations are spot-on. I haven't browsed your extensive library yet, but there's a handful I'd love to see reviewed - Joan Fontaine in "Letter From an Unknown Woman"; Fontaine again in "Born to be Bad"; Fontaine yet again in "Ivy"; Stanwyck in "Strange Love of Martha Ivers"; Davis in "Beyond the Forest", many many more. Maybe you've already done some of these, but I'd love to see your take on these terrific films if you haven't tackled them yet.

Steve, this is a wonderful review of one of the BEST movies ever made! There are no flaws whatsoever in DARK VICTORY. Miss Davis deserved the Oscar for that year, not that little English upstart in that Civil War flick. I love the comments about the future President Reagan. But my favorite supporting character is Michael O'Leary, played by my man Humphrey Bogart. By the way, you do Bette Davis better than she did herself.

I was wondering if u like Esther Williams films. I especially like watching them in the summertime when its super hot out ( all that splashing water cools me off )

@@egriffinj I've never done "The Petrified Forest" , though there are many Bette Davis movies I prefer over that one. To settle the wager, yes, I do an impersonation of Joseph Cotton in "Hush...Hush , Sweet Charlotte." I love his bad southern accent . I don't do him in what I think are his best films; " Shadow If A Doubt", " The Magnificent Ambersons", The Third Man", "Love Letters" "The Portrait Of Jennie" or " "Niagara" ...though, with that one, I bet I could. @@STEVEHAYESTOQ Remember THE GREEN YEARS(1946) featuring dean Stockwell and Charles coburn. MGM release I think. I found a copy of the book after years of searching. The film is hard to get maybe with streaming its available. This is one of the most lovely story adapted to film. Maybe not worth a review everyone should see thus picture once in their life.

Ann Sheridan and Bette Davis became friends when they worked on "The Man Who Came to Dinner". In fact, when Joan Crawford bowed out of "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte", Bette Davis offered Ann Sheridan as her replacement but, sadly, she was considered not box office by 1964.

He directed 2 of my 100 favorite movies- The Razor's Edge and Nightmare Alley. I've heard or read so many times how he would act out the parts as he wanted them done. I would love to have known him.
