thaaaank yooou for the science behind the product. makes choosing the best one for me so much easier.🙂
Super helpful breakdown!
Olaplex SAVED my hair from a disastrous bleaching years ago when it first launched and I’ve sworn by it ever since! I just recently started with K18 and love it too, but it’s so much more expensive, that I’m not going to switch completely, so I’ve been alternating with Olaplex. I will say I 100% prefer K18’s shampoos to Olaplex, but I like Olaplex’s styling products the best, so I definitely use a mix of both companies!
I had a similar situation the first time I tried K18, but I realized that it was because I was using too much. It’s definitely one of those products where less is more beneficial. They’ve updated the instructions to encourage people to use less. I also checked out the CZcams channel and a few others. Well, I thought I was using it sparingly it turned out that I was more than doubling. I’ve definitely seen better results using half the amount.
Thank you for your the shampoo recommendation.
Clearest explanation of both these products on CZcams, ever!
Glad you think so!
Thank you for a great breakdown!
Very helpful video. I used olaplex before and was ok. I just discovered K18. WOW … I love this product.
I have been using olaplex for years but k18 only recently, I use both where I use K18 once a week and olaplex on a different day. I prefer olaplex as I find it suits my hair type better, but I probably need to use k18 for a lot longer. I didn't know olaplex was temporary while k18 is permanent, that is really useful to know. K18 is really expensive so I try not to use it often
Great explanation of the differences between these products! I bleach my hair and have used Olaplex for years... I ordered K-18 and plan on using both Olaplex 3 and K18. Thanks so much for the great video!
How did it go?
Bleaching damaged my hair. My hair stylist suggested using Olaplex No. 3 with No. 1 and Olaplex shampoo No. 4. I didn't see any difference in my hair texture. Then I started using K18 and noticed some changes. The best change is using K18 clarifying shampoo with K18.
After waiting 4 minutes for K18, I apply the Olaplex mask No. 8. I towel dry my hair and use Living Proof. It feels sticky but goes away after I blow-dry my hair. Living Proof has made the most significant difference in my hair texture. My hair is softer and less frizzy after two uses. I also find less is more when using these products.
@ lillychan
What Living Proof product do you use?
Thanks for this video! I have 2B wavy hair and very oily scalp and skin, and I rarely color or heat-style it. So, I'm honestly not the type of person the product is marketed to! But last winter, I started blowing my hair dry daily and I stared noticing more split ends and fly-aways. I've used Olaplex for a couple of years now, and overall I'd say it's great. I prefer the conditioner to the hair perfecter, and use it as my usual conditioner--it brings out the curl and tames any fly-aways. But a couple of months ago I tried K18 hair mask and I have to say it was a whole other experience! The change to my hair was unlike anything I've seen using any other product. The last time my hair looked this lustrous was when I was a teenager! The elasticity of my curls, in particular, just blew me away. Because my hair is thinning, it did make it LOOK oily (though my hair doesn't feel greasy at all to the touch). But otherwise, the overall condition was just incredible. It's a shame the product costs so much! But I can get away with using just one pump most days, so that helps it last a bit longer. And the convenience is a bonus--since I no longer condition my hair in the shower, that's saved me some time every morning right there! I just apply it to the ends and go.
Wow! A board certified dermatologist w/excellent science and presentation. Subscribed!
great video, thanks!
I’m so happy to hear a scientific point of view rather than just “k18 is bad because i’m a hair stylist and i say so.” K18 has been so much better for my hair and as someone with a disability and can’t sit around 10 min etc (even though i did try for months) olaplex just didn’t give me the same benefits. I don’t even have that damaged of hair (not coloured or heat damaged, mostly just from being up all the time and outside etc). Also i’m super sensitive to smell and the smell of olaplex was just making me so ill all the time. Im definitely sticking to k18, I just wish it was more affordable 😅 Now i just need to find a decent shampoo
Amika has excellent shampoos. Not cheap but definitely not nearly as expensive as Olaplex or K18. The Kure shampoo, conditioner and hair mask for damaged hair. If not they have alot of Shampoos. The Redken line is great also. K18 and Olaplex never did bad but nothing good for my hair. The Kure line from Amika always worked the best.
Yeah depends on the client. Most client’s eyes glaze over.
If you have curly hair, I can recommend the Ouidad Bond shampoo and conditioner - miracle is that they are fragrance free! I had an allergic reaction to K18 so tried the Ouidad before attempting the Olaplex. I can say that the conditioner is extremely emollient, my curls finally have some gloss again and they are a prettier shape. You just leave the conditioner on for 3 minutes.
Dr: “This is a mouthful to say”
Dr: * proceeds to pronounce it perfectly and seamlessly*
you are amazing. thank you so much!!! New suscriber here!
Denatured alcohol is used in K18 formulas because it opens keratin's porous structure and helps deliver the peptide to the hair's damaged sites. Isopropyl alcohol is at a very low level (about 0.5%) in the K18 Mask formula. It is part of an ingredient blend, but it is not directly added to the formulas.
Denatured alcohol? That doesnt make sense to me
I have olaplex 0 and 3. It does nothing for my hair. I'm going to try k18 because of you. Thank you!
I’ve been using it about 3 months and I haven’t seen any difference in my hair . I actually love the olaplex bonding cream better
K18 helped heal my hair so much more than Olaplex. I have a base color and highlights, I tried all the Olaplex products and they just never did much for me… but K18 leaves my overprocessed hair silky and really shiny, and I don’t need to use it more than once a month. Olaplex was just a waste of a lot of money for me.
I’ve been using Olaplex lately . My hair was so damaged. It’s completely ruined my confidence. Olaplex took several times of using it before I could see the physical changes. And when I did, it was amazing. Then, I ordered K18. On the first use of K18 I could have literally cried with how much better it made my hair look. Tonight, I used the Olaplex pre-shampoo, then clarified my hair twice, and used K18 after I got out of the shower. My hair is currently drying. I’m eager to see what the combination is going to do for my hair, since I’m only on my second use of the K18. 🙏
How did this go for you, using them together on the same day? Currently thinking of trying this myself.
I tried and corrected every mistakes i made using k18. It doesnt work. My hair is corse and dry and sticky. On the other hand, olaplex has been a miracle for my hair.
Your comment almost makes no sense
@@kristysebs32😂😂 I was also like huh?! 🤔
I have hair thats turning gray, although natural blond, and dry and frizzy (just the gray hairs are wonky for some reason, curly almost). I've been using Olaplex for quite some time now, so so results, I've used the shampoo, conditioner and the number three pre-treatment, but also their "0" product which is basically like water, you spray on prior to shampoo, same bonding ingredient as other products but way more, so I think I am now going to continue with that and add in the K18 at the end! Wish me luck!
I feel K18 works much better than Olaplex, but I rotate between the two because K18 is so expensive. I also like the K18 clarifying shampoo - amazing for an itchy scalp (although it’s actives appear to be salicylic acid and charcoal, which I believe you can definitely find in cheaper products).
I love the K18 shampoos, they’re honestly game changing, and I’ve never thought that about a shampoo!
First clarifying product that leaves my hair completely clean feeling without feeling stripped! Love the detox shampoo so much!
I use olaplex NR 3 and yes its a bit inconvenient to use, but the results were amazing for my hair. Never tryed K18 yet. But its the prize what is holding me back. I have to order it on Amazon because here in Canada they don’t have it on the market drugstores yet.
I’m from BC, Canada. They sell k18 at all hair salons and Sephora.
I always watch yourr videos...Because..i have sensitive oily skin and it's acne prone... I had very embarrassing days far before but now it's a bit reduced...and I'm a teenager i would be thankfull if you say that should I use salicylic acid face wash and benzoyl peroxide gel? ......Please Reply..🙂🙃
Hi! Have you tried tge living proof triple bond complex? Is that one better than these?
Ive only used k18 mask once today (two pumps), totally can see it works, my frizzeled hair has turned into smooth loose curls, my hair has never done that before 😮
What do you think of the living proof bond repair?
I use both!! Ive had amazing results!! I pre treat with olaplex no. 3 for 10mins, then cleanse and apply k18.
Im also a mother and honestly, its literally an extra 10mins. I tend to do this routine once a week at the end of the day. I personally find that easier to incorporate into my routine around my kids.
I had EXTREMELY damaged hair from bleaching. It was super dry and looked horrible prior to this routine.
Also, i use a clarifying shampoo with this routine, meaning i only need to cleanse once every 6 days! But of course, thats just me, i know everyone is different, please dont come at me for saying that 😮
I urge anyone with damaged hair to try this. Oh...and i use conditioner AND a hair mask after k18. I use the Shiseido repair version and you can apply and rinse immediately for those in a hurry! It still works! X
And if that's not complicated enough, for those of you who dont know, Olaplex advise us to cleanse hair PRIOR to using no. 3. 😂 then cleanse again.
Olaplex was so have on my hair to my hair damaged my friends hair so I would like to try a different product.
Olaplex worked better for me and it's cheaper. I tried k18 and didn't like it. thanks for informative video
I love watching your video ,
Thank you
My mom recently got a perm. Would this cause a reverse of the perms effect?
Can you use k18 before and after coloring your hair?
Dr. Liu, I love the K18!!! I have my hair professionally colored - I’m brunette & get regular root touchups & also highlights three times/year. The K18 has kept my hair so healthy & soft. I don’t use a lot of heat treatments. I do occasionally blow dry my hair with my Dyson, yet I typically air dry & can fortunately get away without a lot of heat styling. I do use hot rollers for date nights. Question: how often should I use the K18? I had one K18 treatment at the salon & did 6 washes with it. Yet I’m unsure how often to use it on a regular basis. I wash my hair every 2-3 days. Appreciate your feedback & really enjoy your channel.
Thanks for sharing!!!
@@dr.jennyliu thanks for sharing? She asked you a question? Do you actually read the comments?
@@roddiethehottie5992 I see a lot of youtubers do that. It's happened to me and my first thought is, did they even read the whole comment with a question? That's a little off putting to say the least!
I think I read they recommend once a week after the 6 washes in a row. Once your hair is in good condition, you could probably do it twice a month.
I have been using k18 for approximately 2 years. I used the k18 for every wash for after I get my hair bleached(every 4-6 months) until it feels manageable again. That can be 3-4 washes in a row. Then I got back to using it once a week for maintenance. It’s really helped my baby fine hair grow from a bob to mid back length.
dr. liu can you do a review for coco & eve?
Hi my sister did a treatment in her hair which completely ruined her hair and now it's extremely dry and falling of. The treatment probably called matrix.
Do you think K18 will help. Or anything you'd like to suggest?
What do you think using OlaPlex 3 (step1) as described, and take a shower cleanse only no conditioner (step2) and then use K18 (step3) as described ??? Would it speed up the repair process ???
Hi, I have to use a hair color nutrient mask. The correct way would be: clarifying shampoo, k18 and after 4 minutes applying my colour nutrient mask without rinsing the k18. Should I rinse everything at the end ? What do you suggest me? :) I am referring to the leave-in
My hair fried off almost to the root because of bleach and tbh I’m on my 4th day in a row using the k18 (following their suggestion to do 6 days in a row and then gonna reduce to maybe once a week or so) and my hair has already been feeling sooooo much better 🙌🏽
I did this years ago when Olaplex first launched 3, and it saved me from a pixie cut!!!! Gotta love science!!!!!
Thank you for sharing the 6 day in a row suggestion. I’m In a similar situation.
FYI k18 says to use it for 4-6 shampoos in a row, not 4-6 days in a row.
If you don’t typically wash your hair daily, I don’t think you should do that for this product either. Might run the risk of dryness/ brittleness etc.
@@kamm5280 yes the directions say to use every 4-6 shampoos. i misworded, I have veryyy oily hair and I wash either every day or every other day maybeeeeee every other 2 days if my schedule allows me to without getting toooo oily and the k18 reallyyyy helped within those 4-6 washes for my bleach damaged hair and now i only use it once a week or every two weeks or so since im not using any color chemicals and not as much heat in my hair anymore
Can I use them together?
So if k18 is permanent I shouldn’t have to use it as often. Right? Maybe every two to three months? Also should I worry about protein overload?
I have used olaplex for years as a natural. Since I started more heat processing I find it helps to protect my hair from the heat damage.
Olaplex should be applied after you wash with shampoo once. It helps if you don't have a build up of products blocking olaplex and then shampoo a second time.
That s what I exactly do. It just doesn’t make sense to me to put it on dirty hair.
What's your opinion of the Lóreal Elvive Bond repair products that also work to mend damaged hair?
I personally have never tried but products formulated for damaged hair can temporarily help to coat ends, make them softer and more manageable
@@dr.jennyliu I see , thank you. I think I'll try the Lóreal one as it's more affordable than Olaplex and K18
great to have a real professional discus this topic and i do use both. i would like your opinion on why people try so many days not washing their hair. is their really a benefit to this?>
Since you haven't received an answer, I will give you my dermatologist opinion. At a regular checkup visit she checks the scalp. She saw places of seborrheic dermatitis caused by sebum buildup. I have an oily scalp. I was always one who washed every day. So, I tried to go every 3 days because I read so much on the internet it was not good to wash every day. She told me if you have an oily scalp you HAVE to wash every day, if you have a dry scalp not as often. Although I'm sure she would never feel you should go as long as a week as some do. I hope this helps.
Yes but the concentration of ingredient that makes repair is higher in professional products for both brands than products available to consumers. This is an important consoderstion.
Exactly
can you use them together?
You use it twice a week? I thought K18 said every 3 to 4 washes?
So the first few times I used K18 I used it the way the bottle says, but now after waiting at least four minutes I will put conditioner in like normal, rinse, and then style my hair. I feel like I see the same results, and I’ve read online that k18 claims that after four minutes the molecule has penetrated the hair and won’t come out anyway.
Babe it says shampoo hair only
Use the k18 don't wash out wait 4 min then continue normal styling
Don't wash it off
K18 confirmed that this is correct, it is absorbed at that point and you can condition after the 4 minutes.
Can I use it on the same wash day? that's the 64000 dollar question
I've been using Olaplex (from No 4 to No. 7) for 2 years but I don't think it did much for my hair (except the No. 6, that thing is really good). I've just tried out K18 for the first time at the hair salon and bought one immediatly I got home. I have not used it since (it was just a few days ago) but I'm curious what it'll do. I might restock on Olaplex No 3 and No 6 as well, cause my hair is really damaged atm.
Hey dr jenny i have stretch mark today it's new and red 😢 i'm 24y and i didn't have it before but i just gain weight from 44kg into 63kg in one year i just being in the normal range of weight but i just
Start taking collagen caps 6'000 daily is that's would help ? And what about putting Retin A on them ?
Taking supplements won't help hugely. The only thing that will is time. In the meantime, just moisture the skin well. You can try scar fading creams but ultimately a new stretch mark just takes time to fade into your skin. Try not to worry on it too much, before you know it you won't even see it unless your looking for it ♥️
Massage your skin with oil or cream daily to help preventing more.
@@TracyD2 yes i massage my skin with body oil from palmer's but it's take a lot of time to dry , i didn't find any different's actually it's still pinkish to red .
@@queenkoi thanks for your lovely comment ❤️
Great content, I appreciate your videos, however k18 is not the best offer for the price 😮check b24 mask from Nutree, I already used 1 bottle and super-exited with my results ❤❤❤❤
Too bad non of those products helped me improve my hair :( can’t wait to finish the K18 , thank God they came out in small bottles . From Olaplex I still like the mask though . And I have to use one drop of Olaplex oil when I using K18 since my hair is so thin and fragile and K18 alone causing it’s breakage
I not like olaplex 3 did not work me .I use redken heavy cream treatment it help dry hair from having color it so much better
English on fleek mi lady
Thanks Dr. Liu! I'd love to try K18, but it's just sooo expensive! $30 for Olaplex versus $75 for K18. Am I looking at the right thing?
totally agree
I know k18 is definitely more $. Olaplex can still be helpful. I also recommend using a deep conditioning mask once weekly and try to reduce amount of coloring and heat styling
@@dr.jennyliu Thanks Dr. Liu! I’m trying to be kinder to my hair. I’m aging and have long, fine, thin and breakage prone hair. Over time, it seems to have gotten finer and whispier. 😣 I’ve been at home recovering from shoulder surgery and haven’t been able to wash my hair as often I normally would (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) and am searching for ways to take better care of what I have left! I love your breakdown of K18 and think I’ll give it a try! Thank you!
For me, it is still cost effective to use k18 bc I use so much less each time than I use of olaplex. A bottle of k18 lasts almost a year, I use one pump each time. I buy 4 #3 and#8 each year so it costs me more to use
@@karynnotkaren693 Thanks for that! Great information to have! I have super fine, thin hair, so it’ll probably last me even longer than it does most people. I’ll give it a try next! ❤️
Never felt a single difference with Olaplex even the salon version. With the K18 I immediately notice a difference. Hopefully it's not bad for your hair if you use it regularly, like I hope it doesn't have an effect like protein overload. That was such a nightmare to deal with.
What do you do when you have protein overload ? What are hair symptoms. I May he dealing with that now from keratin tip extensions , I think it fried my hair .. They are out but my hair texture is ruined
@@melissayanez7980 I just cut my hair off because I couldn't fix it. It's when your hair feels completely sealed off like moisture can't get in and it's breaking off all the time. I remember taking a shower and it was like wetting a piece of plastic. You could keep using a clarifying shampoo, get a trim, and see if that helps. Maybe go to a salon and ask if they have a treatment for it.
I did that today , cut it so short and the hair lady said I should shave it off. Use wigs And start fresh. I cried. I can’t shave my head. I’m so scared of that.
My hair feels just as you say. I can’t believe keratin tip extensions did that to my hair
I personally prefer olaplex because of the way it is used. The directions are much easier to follow because I can follow it up with either things. You can’t do that with k18. Not being able to use a conditioner with k18 is a big con for me.
The k18 is like a leave-in conditioner but obviously you know what works best for you and your routine
FWIW, you can use other products after you’ve applied the K18. It just needs to sit on your hair for four minutes first. I wait the four minutes, and then use leave in conditioner with it (and any other styling products I want to use). My hair ends up feeling just about as soft and moisturized as it does having used conditioner with styling products. It might be worth trying!
You can use a conditioner with K-18, after the 4 minutes are up just use a leave-in conditioner in your hair and you’re golden. K-18 is super easy to use, you’re just being overly rigid about having to use a rinse-out conditioner. You don’t. And once you get all the healing benefits of K-18 you’ll wonder why you were so rigid before 😅 I have baby fine super tangly bleached hair, I use K-18 after shampooing, after the 4 minutes are up I use L’anza Trauma Treatment leave-in conditioner. The combo leaves my hair silky and shiny and I have no problem detangling my hair.
I use k18, leave on for 4 minutes and then apply an overnight hair mask on top of it and rinse the next day. This works for me.
Olaplex sucks. I used K18 first through my hair dresser, then at home. To pay less, I tried Olaplex. Not that good. If I had gone from Olaplex to K18, my opinion Olaplex might be better, but I stared with K18. My black hair has been bleached and toned to ash/silver so it’s had a lot of abuse. K18 makes it look so so so beautiful! My professional photo is so pretty! Olaplex didn’t do that for me
How do so many women from South East Asia have beautiful, long, glossy hair without all of these expensive hair products? I'm curious if there are more affordable ways to keep hair healthy. Many of these women would not be able to spend $75 on a hair mask, but have very nice hair.
Genetics.
You are so cute 💗💗
K18 fried my hair. It actually damaged it. When I stopped using it my hair reverted back to its original self but now damaged. I saw no accumulated benefit. That alcohol in it kills your hair. My honest opinion. My hair was in rather good condition prior to using it. So disappointed that I ruined my hair
Sorry to hear about your experience. It can be so personal what works well and doesn’t. I hope you’re able to find a product that works well for your hair.
I totally agree that denatured alcohol as first ingredient in this expensive product does not do it for me
It could be that you used too much product. When you add too much product... you're essentially adding too much protein so it'll dry your hair out like crazy. You're only supposed to use up to 2 dime size amounts of product... that's it.
@@hudaf79 I don’t think it’s the protein. It’s the over saturation of denatured alcohol IF they did apply too much.
Olaplex did this to my hair
Olapex saved my hair than I upgraded to k18....still usinh both
