Olaplex and K18 the truth and your not going to like what I say.

- the hype has been around for years over Olaplex, but is the new kid on the block K18 taking its title. i hope so, i have never been a fan of Olaplex and you probably wont like my answer.

K18 saved my hair, my previous hairdresser destroyed my hair and it was snapping off at the root. I couldn’t even brush my hair, it was awful. I tried K18 and although my hair wasn’t perfect, it saved my hair significantly. It hardly snapped after and meant I can now grow the damage out instead of shaving my hair off 😅 definitely worth the high price tag
I totally agree with you. My hair got messed up and K18 saved the rest what is left after highlights i got 😮
Me three! I wish I had bought K 18 sooner! A girl on a random IG post about color damage suggested it to me! It saved the little hair I had left!❤
I’ve used both products. To me, Olaplex did a better job at helping my hair. K18 feels more like a leave in conditioner. I haven’t noticed results that stay as long with K18. Olaplex made my hair have less breakage and felt stronger. K18 gave me less tangles and lovely shine. So I don’t know… I like them both. But are they miraculous and do they totally repair hair? No. Absolutely not. They help. But they are not miraculous wonder products. Washing my hair less and using leave in conditioning products have helped with the appearance and feel of my hair just as much as K18 and Olaplex. 🤷🏼♀️
thank you cuz olaplex worked miracles on my hair, and ive been researching k18 .
I’ve tried both and am liking the K18 over the Olaplex. My hair feels stronger and looks fuller at the ends. So far, so good.
I’ve used Olaplex 1 & 2 as a standalone treatment for a long time. It only seems to really help if it’s used regularly. I’ve also tried K18 & I’m not so sure this is doing anything for me. I steer away from keratin products as I’m terrified of getting a keratin overload & causing more damage. Would love you to do a video on keratin product usage 😊
I have used Olaplex 0 to 8 and liked it. I am always on the hunt for something better, I think I have found the Holy Grail in K18. I heat style and colour my hair. I have used K18 twice so far and for me it is a Miracle, my hair looks and feels healthy and strong. I am looking forward to seeing the results after the 4-6 treatments.
Beyond helpful, thank you for posting. I used Olaplex 4B shampoo only, once a week for 8 weeks and lost 1/2 my hair. The hair that remained was like a rats nest. I had clumps of hair sliding down my back in the shower, beyond horrifying.
I had nice hair, although it was highlighted and a little dry, so I wanted to take care of it. I wish I never used Olaplex, my skin became irritated on my face, dry and blotchy. I understand about the bonds and breakage, but don't understand why I had the massive hair loss. I didn't have Covid, or a change of health or stress, nothing to explain it, other than when I stopped Olaplex, the massive hair loss stopped. One year later, most of it has grown back it.
I appreciate your speaking out, it takes courage as most others blame me and say it can't be the shampoo.
Have you tried the Joico AgeDefy? It is a bond builder too
I also had damage hair after few olaplex 8 ised and i threw it . I think natural products are better
Thank you for sharing. I had exactly same problem. My hair was falling out so much when I used olaplax. .
I experienced same things as you did , my hair was falling out in clumps and I used Olaplex diligently , the only exception was the professional salon olaplex that my hairdresser used it yielded great result
So for my personal use I have switched to Kerastase
pretty sure you are allergic to something in it, ecpecially if you say your face was irrated. Used Olaplex 1 and 2 for years and no irritation anywhere
I use both products and alternate between the two. I use K18 once or twice a month and the other times I use Olaplex. I only use Olaplex 3 and 4 on regular basis as I found the other Olaplex products was more hype for my hair routine. I love the Olaplex 4 shampoo...a little goes a long way and my hair does not feel stripped after using. Sometimes I will follow with K18 or just use another deep conditioning mask.
Thank you, I'm with you!
I've tried k-18 and it does its job as you said only when you continue using it. I'm more a fan of made individual treatments depending on hair structure and needs🤗
I use Olaplex as a stand alone treatment. I saturate my hair completely and leave it on overnight with plastic hair caps. I've tried No. 3 with amazing results (as in, it visibly reversed fried ends), but now I'm using the No. 1 and 2. I also just purchased the K18 shampoo and mask, and have used them just once, so I cannot attest to the K18. However, the fact that it is supposed to be a leave-in treatment and that we need to use such a small amount does not sit well with me. With Olaplex, I get my hair drenched in the product from roots to ends and have no doubt I have it on every single strand. But with the K18 mask, I really had to use so many pumps to feel that. I know they say you only need a few pumps, but even with my chin-length straight hair, I could not be sure I was covering everything. Long story short, I hope K18 comes up with a treatment too. By the way, I always use Olaplex on freshly washed damp hair too, never on dirty hair, to get the most out of the product. So, washing the hair before treatments is not an issue for me.
Olaplex damaged my hair both times I tried it a few months at a time. The first time I stopped after a few weeks because my hair was off and started breaking and "self trimming". This led to damaged ends and an eventual cut. So went back to my normal routine. A few months later I decided to try it again because of all the hype and the same thing happened! At first it seemed to work beautifully but a few weeks later my hair just got brittle and dry and breakage ensued again. I'm back to my usual hair care and my hair is slowly recovering, but appears much better.
that's what I've heard the most. just like that curl line that got a class action lawsuit for making people's hair fall out
I never experienced breakage with Olaplex I've used it many times.
@@marilyndoll2929 Same. Olaplex 3 is frigging wonderful on my dry, damaged, color processed, curly hair. Amazing! It works so well, it's restored my hair back to how it was in my twenties and I'm in my fifties now. The stuff works.
@@vaskylark unfortunately it doesn't work for everyone. olaplex is causing breakage i've never experienced before :/
@@angelina-aisha same for me I thought I was the only one not liking olaplex
Olplex never did anything to my hair. Meanwhile I started using curlsmiths bond repair lotion. It has protein in it, besides repairing the bonds, and I love it. I guess it’s probably just the protein, to be honest.
I haven’t tried the K18 yet, my hair has little damage so if I do I probably won’t be the right person to judge it anyway.
I'm glad you are saying something. I'm not a hair stylist but it seems that a lot of brands are coming out with their own versions of bond repair products. From what I'm told you can't repair hair, you can strengthen weak hair. Damaged hair has to be cut off. I could be wrong.
I've used both and I prefer K18 by the 4th treatment my hair completely transformed. It feels like I never fried my hair. It fell like virgin hair plus the breakage and fallout stopped as well. I'd still use OlaPlex if i lighten my hair. But K18 is amazing I'm in love with it.💜
the Sh stands for synthetic human ('h' should be lowercase as per biochemistry nomenclature).
78 refers to the type of gene it was spliced from. for instance, Sh-Oligopeptide-1 is the synthetic human epidermal growth factor (Sh-EGF).
pronounce it as: oligo (many) + peptide (nascent pre-protein molecule).
so it's 'synthetic human oligo peptide 78’.
Is it possible to know the names or what to search for products that contain the same peptides? I know there might rules against sharing names as it sound as advertising them but it would be really helpful.
I LOVE MIXING the Olaplex #6 with a few drops of #7 Oil as a leave-in!! It's MIRACULOUS & even works on my fine thin hair! I have to be VERY careful not to use too much but my daughter- with TONS of LONG yet fine hair can LOAD up the bottom 3/4 of the shaft & it looks AMAZING! She always gets offers to be a hair model- no one can believe her hair is REAL! (for reference I have long, highlighted, fine hair)
Not sure what it's worth, but I used olaplex a few times and also their other product that you squirt in your hair while it's dry and leave it on for I don't know, 10 minutes or so? I don't remember exactly what it's called but I put that in my hair first and then put the other number something or other on my hair and I really feel like it damaged it pretty bad! I did this once before and it was probably a year since I've done it and I just did it again a few months back and it was just as terrible! I tried the K18 now twice and it seems like it made a huge difference! I can definitely tell the difference in the way my hair dried as it didn't absorb all of the water like it normally does and becomes frizzy. I waited about 5 minutes after I applied K18 and put in some leaving conditioner and a curl conditioner type stuff and it actually allowed my hair to retain the moisture, unlike any other time ever in the past! Normally my hair gets so dry and super frizzy no matter what I put in there! I was pretty blown away that it actually looked pretty darn good after only a second use. So for whatever it's worth that is my opinion for now. That could change in the future but we will see... Hopefully not!
Hi, I have to use a hair color nutrient mask. The correct way would be: clarifying shampoo, k18 and after 4 minutes applying my colour nutrient mask without rinsing the k18. Should I rinse everything at the end ? What do you suggest me? :) I am referring to the leave-in
The thing for me is that K18 made my hair fall out ... like A LOT in clumps - it did seem to smooth my hair and make it feel softer, but at a pretty significant cost. I'm not sure if my hair could handle whatever kind of processing it was doing. Olaplex seemed to make my hair a lot thicker and it felt stronger, but after not using it for a week or two it was completely back to its original state - I also noticed my hair felt MUCH dryer on olaplex and needed a ton of extra moisture. Not sure either product works well for me.
hello what kind of hair do you have?
Which products are cheaper and contain the same ingredient?
I’m interested to hear the other product names you mention that have a similar effect or similar ingredients as the k18?…
K18 is amazing and works soo well to repair damage in my hair but the price point is ridiculous. Olaplex I still think is quite nice but I only use the No 8 sometimes and I do notice that I tend to get sort of curly unhappy ends after I use it.. I have to say washing my hair with Matrix Rebond shampoo and Kerastase Therapiste Resistance shampoo followed by Wonder water or lamellar water followed by Matrix Re-bond pre conditioner, followed by Kerastase Absolut Blonde Mask works better than anything else I have tried. Luckily I work for L'Oreal so I get these products for cost price :-).
Have you tried Olaplex 4 in 1? I found it extremely hydrating. One bottle lasted me a year!!! And that's with 2-3 pumps per wash 😊 my hair is almost at my navel, for length reference
I used K18 and lost the volume of my curls. I used it 6 washes in a row and by the 3rd wash, my hair was flatter on my head. My split ends were even more noticeable .. I reintroduced Olaplex 4 in 1 and my bouncy curls volume came back! My ends also looked more moisturized. So now, I am going try K18 once a month with Olaplex 4 in 1 together and the remainder of the month just my Olaplex. When I colour my hair i always used Olapex 1 and 2. ❤❤❤❤
Been using K 18 for over a yr with highlighting and now no highlighting. Use as directed and hair is healthy and strong ❣️
I've used olaplex both on myself and on clients and while I did notice less breakage vs not using anything I wouldn't say that it lived up to the claims at all. When I researched it further I learned that the molecule they used is too big to fully penetrate the hair. It does get under the cuticle but is too big to enter the cortex. So it's essentially working as a bandaid to hold the hair together at its weakest points which is how it prevents breakage. With that being said though because of the way it works overusing it is possible and may cause the hair to become more brittle and eventually snap (think overuse of protein treatments). It may also mess up curl patterns when overused. K18 I've researched the science behind pretty extensively when I first found out about it. The patented ingredient they use is a synthetic polypeptide chain that is so similar to the very polypeptide chain our body naturally produces to create hair. Because it's so similar and because polypeptide chains are so small it's able to fully penetrate the cortex where it blends and bonds with our own polypeptide chains. Once those bonds are formed the way they break is the same way our bonds naturally break (heat styling, chemical treatments, excessive friction, etc), thus eliminating the need for maintenance treatments/products (olaplex 3-9(?)). K18 does make a home treatment but I only recommend it for clients who I know heat style frequently
As I get long normal, not too thick frizzy hair, my hairdresser destroyed my hair detangling them breaking them nervously with his comb ! 😢😅And he told me I should cut them...I have made research by myself and I discovered K18 and it was a very good surprise for me...But as regards the price, I have tried olaplex too...Now I think that the results with olaplex is that the hair keeps the frizz but after several utilisations it gets a little dry....With K18 it doesn’t t go dry but the hair is less frizzy. But both work as regards the beauty of the hair. But I think I will use k18 instead of olaplex in the future...❤
I think what is being said with olaplex it’s a bond treatment and k18 is a protein keratin treatment they’re offering different treatment which offers different benefits and results. So it helps to have a hair analysis whether ur fine, curly, relaxed, damaged , low porosity vs high to choose the right products.
You can use both brands together for your specific needs. I wouldn’t use whole line of both too often maybe just use i.e 0& 3, 8 like 1x wk or 2 but use 6,7&9 for styling and definitely clarify at least once a month
I love both but definitely prefer k 18 but i bleach and so see a big difference… besides the science my hair definitely looks and feels so much better hands down
What are some other products that contain the active ingredient in K18?
HMM... An actual 'explanation'- what a refreshing perspective!! WISH I had found this BEFORE investing in a bathroom-full of Olaplex! I DO LOVE the #7 Oil mixed with #6 as a leave-in though! (for reference I have long, highlighted, fine hair)
I'm in the process of diagnosing the cause of hair loss (heredity, nutrition, hormonal, auto-immune response). I used Olaplex 3 on and off over the last two years & stopped highlighting my hair during this period. It was during this period, however, that I noticed a severe thinning & loss of hair density. I've recently come across a handful of videos discussing a lawsuit against Olaplex where some of their clients are alleging hair loss caused by the product. Would you be able to discuss any more detailed information that may be available on this topic?
What can you reccomend in place of k18?
I never used Olaplex. I love K18. I can now comb through my hair - despite some damage from 'frosting/highlighting' and coloring it. So glad I found this product on youtube. I bought the shampoo and conditioner after using the Leave-in Molecular Hair Mask. Thank you for a great explanation of both products. The cost is not a problem. The products are very robust, require very small amounts.
What are the other cheaper products? I have used K18 and experienced exactly as you say, hair reverting after discontinued use and I do not have the funds to continually use K18, Olaplex or the Admino 18 mentioned below. Thanks for the video :)
I'm asking the same question.
Also what to know!
For bonding I use curlsmith bond repair. I also tried Inahsi bond repair mask, shampoo and leave in conditioner.
For protein alone, I love ecoslay matcha treatment. I have fine wavy hair, medium to high density, for reference.
Redken came out with their own line of bonding products. A bit cheaper.
I'm also wondering this, as the K18 peptide is patented
I have an issue with how K-18 should be used: as leave-in on unconditioned hair. I feel that my hair lacks moisture with only K-18 and no mask or conditioner. Yes, they say you can use a leave-in conditioner after you have applied K-18 and left it alone for 4 minutes. But leave-in conditioners weigh my fine hair too much down.
In this regard Olaplex is much more convenient to use as you wash it out and can use a normal conditioner or a mask afterwards.
K18 has recently stated that you can use conditioner after k18. First shampoo, and then towel dry. Apply the k18- make sure to keep it in the hair for the full 4 minutes. After the 4 minutes you can actually jump back in the shower and apply conditioner afterwards and then style as usual. Just no conditioner before the application
Yes but can you Watch your conditionner after applying the k18 mask after the 4 minutes can you jump in the shower after the 4 minutes I am not so sure and of course how many times do you apply k18 4 times or 6 times
@@celred1344 can you wash the conditioner out ?
@@madisonwinters7994 yes - rinse out the conditioner like you normally would :)
I literally use K18 under the shower, after shampoo, before conditioner like a pre-conditioner for 4 minutes. Otherwise I couldnt get it distributed in my curls lol
Loved your video. I personally don’t think anything works to repair broken and damaged hair except a good ol haircut 😂 tried them all and they all just seemed to make my hair worse so 🤷♀️
safer to just grow your hair out
I get good results with olaplex, I used k18 too, it made my hair soft but I got more results with olaplex
Olaplex 3 has totally destroyed on side of my hair I have tried everything to fix it but nothing helps and it is costly, I hope that this is the death of olaplex
Olaplex made my hair go very straw-like and shed a LOT! Never again
I was an Olaplex user for many years, never had any problems with the product. Tried k18, yes it was good, but then switched to another product called admino 18, fab results, easier to use, totally ditched the Olaplex & k18! 👍
Thanks I’ll check it out. 😃
Does K18 prevent relaxed hair from breaking off? I want to loosen the curls of my hair with thio or calcium hydroxide. But I also want a minimalist relaxed hair routine. 1 shampoo, 1 conditioner, & 1 leave in so I can just grow it to my bum and finally be happy. 😊🎉😂. Also, the compound in k18….what other cheaper leave Ins or products is it in?
Iii try amino 18 after I’ve used up the other 2
Olaplex 3 has made my hair grow longer than it could without it for sure. I'm not sure about K18, I really don't like the hair feel it gives after using it but it has not damaged my hair. I prefer an Olaplex mask like No8.
This is the second time of six times I will use it, as it was recently introduced to me. The effects have been promising for repairing my professionally color-treated hair. I am curious, though, to compare K18 to the Olaplex mask as well as the Epres line other influencers like yourself are discussing.
You didn’t mention at the start if it was Olaplex or K18 you used.
Can u use both on one wash day?
I’ve used both and olaplex has transformed my hair and has made it so strong. Like my hair has grown loads since using it and the health of my hair is like silk. I think some people like olaplex and some like k18 it depends on the persons problem with their hair.
Also olaplex shampoos & conditioners contain a lot of oils not just the patented ingredient. So
Olaplex fried my hair 😢I went in to get my Virgin roots done and like you said the whole strands were fried. I wish I would have known about this issue sooner 😭
My hair is relaxed now and k18 seems to be really helping my hair feels really strong. No split ends!
The truth = IDK. You’re welcome.
Hello you said there were cheaper alternative to K18 that do the same thing. Do you have any names to provide?
Yes the k18 is expensive but it's really not when you think about it in terms of how much you're using and how many uses you get out of it. most people should be using two pumps which means the $75 bottle will give you 25 uses and I used to use olaplex it did help my hair but this K18 repaired my hair better and faster than olaplex.
I felt like I used K18 incorrectly. I followed the instructions. Used it twice and it ruined my ends. Snapped off. My hair looked like it had protein build up. I reached out to k18. They told me to continue to use it for the required 6 uses. I did two more time. It got worse. I stopped. It has taken MONTHS to repair my hair. I now use Amika Kure and Olaplex leave in products (#6 leave in and #9 oil)
you may have put in too much.
Yeah, try looking up Keratin overload, it sounds like that is what happened.
you should make tiktok about this. and they told you to continue...
@lf9341 With how expensive this is, I wasn't applying it too liberally. I would emulsify it in my hands, section my hair off and use it from mid length down.
I have been a long time user of olaplex and love the 0 and 3 together. It was a recommendation of a s Sephora consultant to ad in the k18. I will have to give it some time before I have a solid answer. I will be back l
What are the other cheaper products that contain this ingredient of which you speak?
I have been using Olaplex in all my high lighting formulas for many years and I love it.
So many celebrity colorists use it in their celebrities clients formulas and they also love it as far as K 18 I love it just as much as I love Olaplex, number six Bond smoother
They both make the hair feel great.
I have also been using it since 2015 in all my highlighting it has been a game changer for me and my customers
Try MIXING the Olaplex #6 with a few drops of #7 Oil as a leave-in!! It's MIRACULOUS & even works on my fine thin hair! I have to be VERY careful not to use too much but my daughter- with TONS of LONG yet fine hair can LOAD up the bottom 3/4 of the shaft & it looks AMAZING! She always gets offers to be a hair model- no one can believe her hair is REAL!
i use both but after watching several videos on this by professionals seems like K18 wins wish you would say what other products contain these ingredients
I’m glad I couldn’t afford olaplex since now all these women are losing their hair because of it
K18 saved my hair from severe color damage literally a WEEK after I used Olaxplex 0-5! I wish I had known about K18 sooner!
thank god finally someone making sense. Used that olaplex once or twice never liked it, didnt see the hype. Didnt make no difference to my highlights it actually made it worst as its make the colour performing less. To be honest i sell both olaplex and k18 in my salon i find the k18 is olaplex on steroids for me it works better. They do sell great. But as a colourist i find the K18 working alot better and quicker on the hair. The pricing is a bit off to be honest, my salon is a round london chelsea where you can sell anything at any price, money is no issue but these k18 and the shampoos even rich people confuse why do they have to pay so much for it :D
Thanks for explaining this so thoroughly 👍 👏 😊
Id be interested to hear what other products do the same thing as kq8 but cheaper that may have been the very best thing i heard in this video!
How about epres?
I’ve used olaplex for 6 months shampoo, conditioner, the cream and the oil. It helped me grow back my hair long shiny and beautiful. I stopped using it only because it made my hair heavy and flat (almost oily) and I wanted more volume. K18 mask smells super bad and im not really liking that
K18 Only works when used Correctly
Anyone saying they don't feel a difference may want to re-read the instructions
Which other products contain the K18 peptide SH-OLIGOPEPTIDE-78? I have yet to find any.
This is K18 chemical name for the combination of all 18 amino acids that make up the complex. Other brands have the 18 amino acids but use a different chemical name as they have come up with differentt formulas and would be accused of ripping of K18. Which is not true a number of companies had this technology before K18. If you like K18 and are happy to pay the price then ok.
Naming the other brands with a similar product would have been the most helpful response here.@@HairTutorials
I never had a problem with breakage until I used Olaplex for a long duration. At first I thought I was getting new growth. What a scary thing to realize the Olaplex products were causing my hair to break at the scalp.
👌❤️
I have been using Olaplex for more than 2 years now (using n, 4 and 5 at home once a week, and doing the full treatment at the salon once a mont) what a waste of time and money. It never worked for me.
Olaplex made my hair shed like crazy. As far as I am concerned, it's trash.
No K18 yet, because the price point is ridiculous...😮
Can we use both at the same time?
I heard you can.
@@lf9341 I use both 🤷♀️
Olaplex did nothing from me. Using k18 some hairstrands felt hard and dry. Proteïne overload? I do have to say my hair is weird. The majority of my hair is almost straight and thin. The rest are weird crinkly and have a roughe texture. I always thought it was damage but maybe I just have weird hair. :/
I use them. Of course not together and love both.
K18 say to use k18 4 to 6 times and ongoing too..
This is the best video on K18 Iv
I wonder if he is talking about products like Joico reconstructor.
Olaplex is An Amazing product, I use it all my highlighting formulas, just work perfect , and many Colour technicians will agree with me
I also feel it is an overpriced moisturizer haha. i think our bodies are extremely complex, i think eating really really good food is the key and yoga...i mean i am not sure if olaplex will continue to work if you stop using it!
Did he actually say anything???
K18 is far superior for my hair over olaplex
Olaplex ruined my hair 😢I hate that stuff I don’t see how it could help anyone, but everyone is different! K-18 is wonderful! I have had great results with that and I can finally run my fingers through my hair, it is shiny and my ends are healthy! I’m happy😊
Olaplex had a law suit...so hmmm
Olaplex has been sold and reformulated . There are complaints that the quality is not the same.
Olaplex for me. It works great.

You could crop the video to have only your head and shoulders.
I stopped using conditioner and replaced it with a single pump or 2 of k18. So much easier and less product used. I no longer get split ends, hair is always shiny light and bouncy. After the olaplex debacle I’ll go back to regular conditioner and use k18 once a month 🫠😅
What other products contain this ingredient? Tried doing a google search and didn't find anything.
Ive tried both ollaplex and k-18, both as standalone treatments and prefered the ollaplex, probably because the directions for k 18 say to not use a conditioner, leaving my hair frizzy and dry.
You can either wash the K18 out after the 4 minutes and then condition or use a leave in conditioner after 4 minutes. You just don't want to condition your hair before using the k18 and before the 4 minutes are up
