  • I pulled this dresser out of my son’s room last week and now it’s time to give it a simple makeover and pass it on to it’s next owners. It’s got a slick factory finish on it that has seen some wear and tear so I’m going back to basics with this flip and keeping things beginner friendly. Follow along and learn how to tackle a project like this with just a few simple tools and no experience.

    This is very similar to how I upgraded my bedroom dresser. I used Bayberry on the drawers with some black wax lightly on the edges and black chalk paint on the top and frame. Almost identical drawer pulls too! Great minds think alike!!

    I love the color and simplicity of this piece! I've contemplated trying my hand at flipping furniture, but have been reluctant because of inexperience and not knowing if there's a market for this kind of thing in my area. I really enjoy watching your videos - you make furniture flips look so easy!

    Great work as always Katie. I like to use TSP because a strong solution will actually etch the existing finish so to ensure even better adhesion. That is my 2 cents, before inflation.
    TSP is also one of the few cleaners that you can mix with bleach, Dawn even says not to mix with bleach on the bottle. I live in a humid climate, so just in case you have any mildew odors.

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  Před 2 lety +1

      I do use TSP quite often but I’m moving away from it because of how hard it is on the environment. For a beginner DIYer Dawn is easy to grab and will get the job done.

    • @rockshot100
      @rockshot100 Před 2 lety +1

      @@salvagedbykscott You are so correct about that. Something like dawn or simple green is fine for most cases. A common situation like this doesn't require overkill. BTW, I usually do not like green but that shade and the brass completely changed the mood of it.

      You can get a big ol bottle of Floetrol for like $8…Use it with water based paints for a smoother finish.
      All painted furniture, unless done with high quality sprayers and coatings, and in the best environment, will look like painted furniture. Them’s the breaks BUT there are tools and tricks to minimize these as much as possible! 👌

    It’s like you know exactly what I’ve been struggling with and then make a video about it! What I thought would be a quick project has taken me two weeks! I like fusion but wanted to save a few extra dollars and wanted a custom green color so bought Behr chalk paint. I primed it and rolled the first coat. All was going great…then I decided since I was cutting everything in with the brush I would just keep brushing it on. However I was painting outside and the wind kept drying my paint out. So I got the spray bottle and would spray the peice and my brush alternating. Well I was left with major streaks! I’ve painted it three more times first full strength then twice watered down. Got it looking pretty good but when I went to brush on the topcoat, BOOM streaks! All over the place. I’m so fed up. I was hoping this around be a quick flip and use the much needed spending money. Guess I’m going with fusion from here on out. Question for ya: after buying their primer, paint, and wax how much profit do you think you could make off this piece if you were to sell it, considering it’s flat pack construction?
