    I don't see why everybody's panties are in a bunch about this vid. Yes, it's not a steel "plate" and more a steel "sheet", but this video isn't about the tensile strength of the katana as much as it is the skill of the person wielding the sword. Virtually any blade can cut through it with enough strength behind it, but the ability to swiftly, decisively cut at the proper angle with little to no wasted or misdirected force is impressive. Sheet or Plate, this guy could lop your head off with a stroke, kudos to the skill and dedication to this martial craft.

    • @vivil2533

      +Chris Stalbe i know right this video is not about the sword its about the man weilding it.
      I would say let him do it with another sword but im sure he needs to use a katana for such a feat since that is what he trained with. I bet if he used any other sword everyone would complement him rather than complain about the sword...

    • @andrewraslan5348
      @andrewraslan5348 Před 8 lety +15

      +Chris Stalbe You clearly don't understand how weapons work, then.
      You can't cut clean through medieval plate armour with a sword. And it's not just about the metal of the plate armour, but the angles at which it's arranged. A metal sheet? Yes.
      As for his ability, nobody is denying that. The problem people have is that weeaboos will get their panties in a bunch about a Katana being a magical weapon when in fact it is just a sword adapted to its military context, and this feat could just as easily been achieved with an Arabic saif or a German longsword, for instance.

    • @jacobblanton5179
      @jacobblanton5179 Před 8 lety +9

      +Andrew Raslan The only people I ever see getting their panties up in bunches about Katana are the people who keep yapping about how shit the weapon is and how annoying these "Katana Weeaboo" are that I rarely see, IF ever, and whose opinions shouldn't be of much account to anyone truly serious about history in this fasion anyway.
      There is no such thing as a Katana cult, but there is a strong counter culture of bigotry as of late towards the East and Japan in paticular that is far more obnoxious and zealous anyway.

    Have any of you guys actually worked with sheet metal? .4mm is thin, but with sheet metal, that is a hell of a lot sturdier than you guys think it is. When you work with it and cut it, you can't just cut it by hand, you have to use an electrical or mechanical device to cut it. There is a reason it's commonly used for a number of items. Those that keep saying, "I could cut that with a pair of scissors" go try that and watch them break. That he cut that sheet metal clean in half is far more impressive than you people give him credit for.

      not anyone, when the blade hit the rod, there's a chance of the blade might rotate due to impact if the user doesn't has enough grip but if you're using too much power on gripping,your arm will go stiff and that's pretty much make the sword slower with lower power. The katana wielding is more than grab it and hack it,it's 2 hand sword style and you have to use arm to swing it down and hand to make the momentum to increase the power but yeah, the sword is one of the factor. When I started kendo, I got scolded on using too much arm power for sometime.

    Guys, It's just a style of sword. The Tamahagane used in traditional Katana (Or so the sources I found state) is pig steel/iron, and it's folded 10 times to make it harder and sharper, but it's still brittle. Plus, the guy who just cut that plate has also cut an airsoft BB and an arrow out of the air. It's... really hard to question his skill and at this point it feels like you're just trying to discredit the feat rather than enjoy how clean that cut was.

    No matter the quality of the katana, chainmail was much stronger than you think. Butted chainmail like in Cold Steel tests will obviously break easily, but rivetted chainmail, with the proper padding and protection underneath won't fail under a katana blow. After all, there are some accounts of chainmail protecting soldiers from arrows, which would cause much more stress on the chainmail than a katana blow.

    Mild steel, the pipe is thin section also. Mild steel can be cut with ease. Up to 1mm you can go with tin-snips, beyond there are shear tools for cutting up to 8mm by hand, and there are hydraulic version of shears for up to 20mm. For 0.4mm you can go with regular household scissors. The pipe seems like 0.5-1mm

    • @TruthNerds
      @TruthNerds Před 6 lety +4

      This is quality steel, not aluminium, it is very elastic and continues to vibrate many seconds after the strike. Aluminium has almost no elasticity, once bent, it stays bent. Even low grade stainless steel will deform plastically much rather than elastically. Just goes to show that you don't know anything about the most basic properties of common metals rsp. metal alloys.

    Katana is famous for foreigners, but in Japan guns were also used.
    In 1543, portugese marchants brought the first guns to Japan.
    In 1600 Japan had 500,000 guns. Japan had the largest number of guns in the world then.
    After 1600 Japan had few civil wars and the guns were banned by the government.
    Samurai class (they were soldiers, policemen and bureaucrats) continued to use katana.
    Katana has got improved until WW2. In Russo-Japan war, artisans and engineer developed cold weather specificated katana. In Palau, a tropical pacific ocean island, scientists invented katana for southern islanders to combat with pirates.
