I just bought a used 70-200 2.8 is ii and noticed the lens was wobbly, under the zoom ring. I was panicking and then found your video, seems to be a common fault? Thanks so much, it’s made the worry go away
This video saved me. I bought a used 400 2.8 L IS and was experiencing the same issue you mentioned. The screws were completely loose. Now the problem is gone after I tightened them up. I really love all your videos. Really Informative and entertaining. Cheers from across the pond.
Hi Travis, that’s great news that you’ve sorted the problem, brill. Back to nice sharp frames again. Thanks for watching and the kind words, appreciate your support👍🏻
Keep 'em coming Mark!
Thanks Nick. Certainly getting the creative juices flowing!
This is great, thank you so much for posting. Worked perfect for me!
That’s great👍🏻 Thanks for watching
This is something I leave to the pros, I'd probably do more damage than fixing stuff. Brave man, another great video! :)
Go on David, be brave! It’s pretty easy as I did it ok🤣
@@MarkKerton :D
Just lubed my 300mm 2.8 .... what a difference! Thanks again
Ah great stuff Stewart👍🏻
If only I’d known this 10 years ago 😂😂😂 thanks for this brilliant video, my lenses are going to get some attention now 😀
Thanks for watching. Glad the video has helped👍🏻
Really loving the videos, hope you get more subs soon!
Thanks Mika. Appreciate your support. Stay safe👍🏻
Thanks Mark, I just tightened my 70-200 f/2.8 screws. Wobbles are gone.
Brilliant👍🏻
Looks like you are more busy then when you have assigments. Thanks for all the videos!
Hi Rene. Trying to keep ticking over a much as possible. Thanks for your support and stay safe!
Great video you do forget your gear dose take a hammering through the season I got the neoprene from Lens Coat and have that on my 400 lens it gives it some good protection stay safe
Thanks William. I went on Lens Coat’s site yesterday to grab a link and they’ve temporarily shut it down! Not to worry, when guys need to buy a coat they’ll hopefully be back open again. Thanks for your support William and keep safe👍🏻
Very inspiring and helping out keeping your camera gear in top notch condition.
Thanks for your support👍🏻
Mark Kerton Quality deserves to be recognized
MANY THANKS😁👍🏻 Top subscriber right there!
Mark Kerton Thanks very much and hoping like yourself to get back to the sporting events.
A Th 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Massive thanks Mark, had an issue with a pretty new 70-200 is iii with had lost its depth of field on the out edges. So surprised when I checked the screws, all were proper loose. Should be much sharper fir the weekend 👍🏻👍🏻
Ah that's great David. Pleased the video has helped in some way. 99% sure that was your problem! Let us know how the weekend goes.
great one here
Thanks Sila👍🏻
Hi Mark, just subscribed! Great video and thanks very much for making it easy to follow!
I have a 500mm f4 L IS mark 1. (Similar build to your 400) The barrel is slightly loose. After removing the 6 screws and removing the small white barrel section and tripod foot in your video, it reveals 6 more screws on the black section of the lens. Do they tighten the barrel? It’s loose on the section between the tripod collar and the focus ring.
Thanks for the shoutout!
Ah you’ve seen it Sean. THANKS for the great tip. Just need to use the 400 now! Stay safe Sean👍🏻
Just watched your video - and I've now got a nice tight 70-200 thank you! My on old mki 400 2.8 the tripod collar assembly where the foot adjoins the collar is a bit loose, but looking at the screw heads down a very deep hole, they're not crosshead, but maybe some Canon-specific star type. Suppose I'll have to contact Canon for advice. Great video as always.
Hi Pete. That’s great, pleased it’s helped. Let me look into the 400 screw issue, see what I can work out👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Just managed to do it. Thanks anyway, Mark, for your offer of help. After fiddling around taking off tiny plate screws on the bottom of the tripod foot - they did nothing at all, and seem to serve no purpose. In the end, I just thought I'd try a small allen key and it worked a treat. Nice and tight. Imagine carrying a heavy 400 2.8 around on the monopod as you do at football and have it fall off!! Doesn't bear thinking about. Cheers .
Ah brilliant Pete, nice one👍🏻 Thanks for letting us know too. Time for a brew now then😉
Good stuff!!!
Thanks Stephen👍🏻 Hope your keeping well!
Mark Kerton can’t really complain... well, I CAN, but... lol... Same to you and yours!
Trying hard NOT to complain too Stephen! It’s certainly getting my creativity warmed up, which has to be a positive! Stay well👍🏻
Hi Mark, I have a 400 f2.8 and was going to do the same as you have done. But after taking the first cover off the tripod collar will not come off. I removed the ID plate and under that there are 4 screws/lugs that have what look like little rollers. Would I need to remove the 4 phillips and rollers to remove the foot ? Thank you in advance Ray.
I thought my 70-200 was toast, hello over $2k in replacement costs, nope!
Thank you!
Hey Mark! What size screw does the 70-200 take? I just looked at mine after watching this and have one missing!
is there specific brand of nail varnish you would recommend? This makes me nervous
Hi Mark. Where do you order your replacement screws for your Canon lenses. I'm needing a few for my 400mm lens hood but can't seem to track them down anywhere?
Hi Chris. I order screws and bits from Fixation as a rule. However, I recently replaced both 400 hoods screws with a pair of screws from an old remote controller I had in the garage! Did the job nicely.
Great instructional video and maybe after this virus is under control to combine if possible a live sports action class & video software tutorials for Photo mechanic and Photoshop.
NIkCan that’s planned definitely. I’m now expert but combined with all you guys we can collaborate and try some great techniques I’m sure👍🏻
Mark Kerton Worth making the trip to meet up with like minded individuals.
NIkCan Definitely👍🏻 Pencilled in the diary!
I know what I’m doing this afternoon... 👍🏼
Hi Pascal. Brill, good to have a check round your kit every now and then👍🏻
Mark Kerton don’t we all know but just forget or procrastinate until the lens disintegrates. 😁
Very true Pascal. We’ve no excuse at the moment have we. EVERYTHING should be tip top condition, our houses, cars, bikes, whatever👍🏻
I have a bit of zoom creep on my 24-105, I tried gently tightening the screws under the rubber grip, but there's still a bit of creep. Can I tighten them again? I don't want to strip the thread and unsure how far them can go before that would happen. Your advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for watching. It’s vital when tightening the screws that you have a good fitting screwdriver and don’t damage the screw head. I add good pressure to the screwdriver, you’ll know when to stop turning👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Thanks! Any idea if it's possible to strip them or overtighten? I won't hold you to your advice :D. Right now I'm using an elastic to hold it in place when I'm not using it.
What type screwdriver is recommended for this? Can loctite be usedon the screws?
I’ve just got a small watch driver set, nothing special. I’d avoid loctite to be honest. A bit to strong for such small screws. Thanks for watching👍🏻
Hi Mark great vid thanks I've got the same 2.8 400 with 7d mk2 but the autofocus keeps stopping if I undo the body and reattach it, its works for short while then stops again. I've cleaned the contacts with an alcohol wipe. Can you or anyone help. Cheers.

@@MarkKerton thank you much appreciated.
@@keytools197 How is your 400 lens performing now? is it back to normal?
@WJ_RAW no doesn't work with 7d2, works fine on r5 with adapter. Mystery?
Great video, I have the same lenses. I had to tighten the screws on the 400mm mount the other day but now I will use nail varnish ( hard to explain to my daughter what I want it for ). Just a suggestion, please reduce the music volume on the video and add a bit more light as it looks dark. Keep up the good work and let's hope we get back on the side lines soon
Thanks. You must be a mind reader😁 Just been setting up some lighting in the “cubby hole” Not sure if you noticed in yesterdays video also, the auto focus was knocking badly, so I did raise the music I bit. That will be back to normal next time as just received a better remote mic! This CZcams is getting serious🤣 Thanks for your support, really appreciate it👍🏻
@@MarkKertonNothing else to do, so keep it up! You will soon get to 1,000 subs !!!
Thanks👍🏻 Never caught your name? Yes I guess it’s a positive all this down time, helping to grow the channel and what not! 1000 subs hopefully in the next few months. What they don’t say too much is that I tubers also need to get 4000 viewing hrs! I’m currently at 1,900 so a bit to go yet. It’s not all about the figures though. Just enjoying catching up with all you guys to share our tips etc👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Yannis, I do a bit of sports photography for Focus
Hi Yannis. Ah right, I know of Focus. Hope you’re keeping well👍🏻
Hi Mark My 400mm orientation locking knob is very tight so I cant even tight my lens how to open it or repair it ??
Hi Pankaj. Sounds like the adjuster screw has ceased!? Perhaps try a little bit of WD-40 if you have some available?
My canon 70-200 F4 doesn’t have the screws exposed under rubber 😢
This is great, any pro should know how to work on his own gear. I will say, get some loctite thread locker. Vs Nail polish, it it's just a better way to go. And slightly more manly. Any autoparts store/hardware store. Blue 242.
Thanks Nordburg. Mirko mentioned 243 earlier today, not sure if he ment 242 blue? I’ll have a look into that. Yes, it’s good to look after our kit. I trained as a mechanic after school so have a little bit of knowledge on repairs. Thanks Nordburg👍🏻
@@MarkKerton 243 is medium strength, 242 is medium strength removable. I've always used 242 but that may be because I'm a hobbies as well RC cars etc. It may be the same stuff in the bottle, just trying to appeal to the right group of geeks.
Righto Nordburg, great advice👍🏻 might be some time before the 400 comes out again! Will get some 242 ordered. If it’s ok for those tiny RC screws, sure it’ll be fine for camera gear. Thanks Nordburg👍🏻
@@MarkKerton A small bottle should last 20-80 years. :). Don't feel like you need a big one.
Fancy posting a few drips over to me Nordburg🤣
Hi Mark. I get my neoprene covers from www.wildlifewatchingsupplies.co.uk I find the very good & not a bad price too. Cheers Jim.
Hi Jim. Brilliant thanks, I’ll add that to the link. Hope your keeping well👍🏻
Sorry but you doing it wrong, the front (70-200mm) you dont pill that way the rubber it will lose the elastic.
And about the screw you use loctite czcams.com/video/6pn3C5QVcu0/video.html do not use to much, and no way glue.
Good luck!
Loctite 243 NOOOOOOOO! Great for mechanics but not on theses tiny screws! The 70-200 rubber seems ok after rolling it back on but I will take that into consideration. Thanks Mirko
@@MarkKerton oh yes, google it.
loctite blue :)
On it Mirko👍🏻
