Thanks for watching!
To everyone saying get a camera strap: 1) pro-level video cameras don't have straps 2) straps often get in the way when shooting video. Great video! NYU film pride. Managed not to break any lenses in my 4 years, but often removed the front filters because they seemed to muddy up the beautiful lens flares you can get with high-quality glass
Sean is such a low-key awesome dude. Im sure this will help far more people than the previous (two?) videos on repairing lenses. thanks!
Matt Youngs he is also baked.
Sean is really methodical! Adam probably just wanted to use his bandsaw to remove the filter so Norman could have a heart attack. LOL! I really loved seeing Norm's frightened face every time Adam went to his bandsaw. Where is Simone?
Had a stuck filter on my old 18--55 kit lens for years. thanks to your gentle tap while flat on the table its now free. thx peeps. :D
great tips guys. awesome job ! I managed to open the front of my canon 35mm f1.4 using your video so BIG THANK YOU !
The problem I've run into after purchasing some old film slrs is finding a spanner small enough to accommodate removing the wind levers. The lens ones don't close down enough. I ended up having to diy with a dowel and 2 tiny brads. But I'd love to find the actual tool. Surprised it's so difficult.
I habitually use a strap, and generally dont use filters due to flares. However, I probably should use filters. Straps arent going to save your lens every time.
For example, before I ever had my own camera, my dad was the photographer of the family. One time he told me to go grab his bag so he could change lenses. He didnt told me it was unzipped, and I assumed it was closed. Second I picked it up, his nice telephoto fell out on the asphalt. He used it immediately though since it looked fine. Come to find out, I ruined a few of his photos... Because the filter on the front was cracked.
... Basically, the filter saved his lens. And it fell out of a bag, a camera strap wouldng have saved it in that case.
PS, I've taken my own camera into places where a filter probably should've been used. Lots of ocean spray, or blowing sand. I'm honestly surprised I havent seriously scratched my lenses or ruined my camera.
As they said in the video the filter can protect the lens itself from things that could cause damage. For those who play airsoft for instance something like a filter could be used a what I call a sacrificial lens.
This is really useful to know these tools for camera. I have broken the UV camera filter on my camera once before in the past.
I find it helpful to remove filtler with the old rubber grippers used to open jars, or an oil filter wrench with the rubber strap. Both have worked great for me anytime my filters have been stuck, I keep the oil filter wrench in my camera setup as it worked best, folds up compact, I actually bought specifically for taking off lens filter.
Great segment, good knowledge to get. Thanks.
Youall went all out on this one!
I have never seen most of the tools in this video before. Where do you buy the lens wrenches at? Do they very based upon type of lens you own?
MORE OF THIS PLEASE!
Very well done.
get a strap. i use a sling style and i love it. hangs nicely at my side and easy to raise up for shooting.
What I wanna know is how you got this camera angle
I have a tamron that the focus ring unattached from the body on. I can slide it around on the lens and snap it into place and I am able to focus but it moves off the correct place very easily.
Great info guys. Thank you
Great talk
Where can i buy the lens thread file?
if i dont have a clear glass filter but i do have a UV and a CPL. which would be better to leave on? I also have and FL-D but something tells me its not going to be a preferred choice.
I love These Spacesuits in the background
Sean turned out to be a really cool guy
concerning the Rubber mat recommendation, McMaster CARR offers 5 different hardnesses...30A(Soft), 40A(Medium Soft), 50A(Medium), 60A(Medium Hard), 70A(Hard).
Sean said something about the mat being really soft, so I ordered the 30A Soft.
Also, As someone else asks ... where to purchase the filter thread file??
Same questions here....
Great tips thanks. Graphite ftw.
my canon 70-200 IS ii has a dent on filter thread. i can't even put the front cap as easy as before and i can't put filter as well. a lot of technicians told me that they going to open the whole lens just to fix and charge me that much, but as i watch in youtube it is not that how they'd fix it. I want to buy a wrench lens to fix it by myself but I'm scared. can i remove the first layer of the lens before use the wrench to avoid damaging it?
Any ideia if there is an online curse ? I really wanna learn how to fix lenses and cameras.
This comment section: Ten thousand people who, for some reason, think Norm won't damage a camera if he has a strap
as in he physically can't drop it if it's stuck to his body?
crazy.
There are far more ways to damage a camera than dropping them, and Norm always seems like he'd be very good at finding these ways.
Where did you get that black thing that you called a lens wrench, the thing that Adam didn't use the right way... I just can't find it anywhere
i don't even have a camera why am I watching
Because you´re a video head, like the rest of us
Or, instead of just relying on the filter, use a strap. I don't like using them myself but it's saved me from buying thousands of dollars in camera glass over the past twenty years.
Is that an old Angenieux 12-240mm Lens that you are doing your demonstration on? Isn't that lens terribly expensive?
No need for notifications when your always on youtube
Jimmy Eaton no need for a toilet room when you have a shitBucket

What's the parameters of thread file You are using? I mean what are the universal thread file parameters for lens threads?
I'm curious... why does that guy keep calling it a "Filder" ??? Example at 2:12
Aren't there glassless filter rings, maybe with a rubber bumper or something?
Im a novice prop replica creator and I have a few questions for those of you who are more experienced than I. I am trying to make a 1/2 scale replica of the doom sphere and I don't know what material to use or how to mame the exo skeleton. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
How about for compact cameras?
Filders
Filder.
No sledgehammer? You still have a lot to learn.
didn't adam pretty much do this exact video?
Wow
how i can get the tools sir?
Please I would want to replace the glass on my wide lens
everyone saying "get a strap so you don't break your camera" is basically saying "get a helmet so you don't crash your bike"
Does anyone know how to fix my Sony NEX-5R? When I turn it on, it goes straight to USB Mode (even when no cable is connected) making it unusable. This happens about 90% of the time I turn it on. If it doesn't, it will eventually after a couple pictures are taken.
Not knowing much about that camera, I do have played around with stuff that switches state dependent on usb connection.
So this is just a guess for a very simple issue that could cause big problems:
If your usb port on the camera is damaged so it shorts (or unshorts) a specific pin, the camera will think something is plugged in, and throw itself to a usb mode.
The fix for this would simply be to replace said port and make sure the connections internally to that port has no damage.
A hack to be tried is to get a cable that fits your camera, whatever usb connector it uses, and cut off the cable stuff and exposing the internal wires. Then you can proceed to plugin said connector to the camera, and cross different wires to see if the camera expects certain shorts. If you find out it does expect such, you can basically create your own dongle hack, which you can plugin to make it stay in camera mode.
This is all suggestions for if you don't want to send it to a camera repair dude, and making the assumption it's on the connector end where you yourself possibly can do something to fix it.
Also you may also be as lucky that cleaning the inside of the connector with a cotton stick and some cleaning alcohol will work.
Talks about auto focus on lenses and grabs the lens that doesn't have auto focus 😂
Usefull video I made my lense correct by this idea u ppl can try it guyz bt carefully
Lol as a chemist those rubber cone grippers are filter flask adapters.
Who has replacement parts. My Nikkor threads are really bent. The lens wrench.....lens vice. Could push it back out but it's pretty bad. It may need to be replaced. Who has parts. It's a Nikkor 50mm 1:2 lens from the 1975 -78 era.
get a strap that attaches to the bottom of the camera. Not a traditional strap. But then you wouldn't have material for a couple of vids...
You should just have 2 filters on, the first one gets destroyed and the 2nd one will act as a buffer between the first one and the lens :P
what about stuck polarisers, you're boned then
Use a linear polarizing filter instead of clear helps reduce reflections which protecting the front glass of the lens.
I question the statement of not using a UV Filter. Prolong exposure to UV can cause the lens coatings to separate from the glass and the your your lens is tost. Also it can prevent lens fungus from forming inside the lens. A simple UV Filter is a must on all my cameras lenses.
Umm... UV light kills fungus...
Easy solution. Wear a camera strap and stop dropping expensive cameras!
nICE ONE
So....yep my suggestion was correct on the original video... (smug look) :D
Who else thought Norm finally broke his expensive camera lens? ;-)
This video is not about repairing a broken lens filter. It isn't worth your time so just stop watching now.
Stop breaking cameras !!! Jesus !
Please don't! - camera repair guy
Where are closed captions for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing??????????????????????????????
Just warm the lens filter with your hands about 2 min, working every time.
stop messing about and just get some stilsons on it
Filters are for noobs.
If you have dropped your lens - it is probably not okay. Even if the glass did not break, it it took a knock - it will affect the sharpness.
Deja vu??!! Mandela effect
I can't stand this guy! constantly smacking his lips (tongue)! it's ridiculous!
I'm baked too.
Don't use one and you will save some money :)
.. or, first of all Don't use a filter and 2nd don't drop your lens!... not that hard... ;-)
FILDER
not first
no views...first
This advise is way too complicated, point one....good, point two and onwards are just way more involved than it needs to be. I've instructed you guys 'how to' on the previous videos you've made concerning broken filters but you fail to listen.
Am I.. first?
First
Norm, quit being an aspie. From, an aspie.
