Football was quite different those days and European teams could not rely on South American footballers, definitely Latin American leagues were the strongest ones during Pele's time. Palmeiras, for instance, won against Real Madrid twice, one of them in 1969 without too much effort 2 x 0 in Spain. The best clubs and players were in South American, even in 90ies I watched spectacular matches in Brazil with Rivaldo, Romário, Djalminha, Cafu and Roberto Carlos. Football was quite different those days and European teams could not rely on South American footballers, definitely Latin American leagues were the strongest ones during Pele's time. Palmeiras, for instance, won against Real Madrid twice, one of them in 1969 without too much effort 2 x 0 in Spain. The best clubs and players were in South American, even in 90ies I watched spectacular matches in Brazil with Rivaldo, Romário, Djalminha, Cafu and Roberto Carlos. honestly, I am a die hard messi fan, but its true Pele is the greatest and he will always remain the greatest player of all time. Its like god has choosen him for only football
guisuper 23 - true but Messi is at least in the conversation - along with Maradonna.. Hard to compare eras because nowadays attacking players have it easier (better protected and have better equipment) - but Messi is certainly the best of the past 25 years and defies logic in the current game.
