Honestly, as an actor observing Shia's career, seeing interviews of him etc. I always respected his dedication to his craft. He hasn't always been liked or understood by the media, or the public, but if you look at his work, the choices he's made as an actor, you can tell he is continually challenging himself. With blockbusters like Transformers or even Indiana Jones he could have easily gone more in that direction, but he didn't.

Shia LaBeouf is the first actor that has captivated me for his humanity so clear in his work. The first thing I saw him in was Holes, but I saw Honey Boy right after that, and I've had the perspective of that movie to influence how I see all of his movies. Definitely with you, not all are good, but I love the way he is his own artist, his own man, and won't let Hollywood boss him around. One movie you didn't talk about, which is perfectly understandable, is The Greatest Game Ever Played. I thought his ability to portray raw thought and emotion without a lot of dialogue is so compelling, and that was one of his first movies. He has this way of just letting the audience know exactly how the character ticks, cause he really combines with the character. He really goes all-in for his roles. Definitely one of my favorites I've seen of Shia.

i wouldn't say honey boy isn't 'not hard to get through.' it absolutely IS a struggle to watch, but due to its realism. it's a movie i recommend to people only with the warning that it may be triggering for people who were abuse victims as children specifically because of this nuanced, in-depth depiction of an abusive father. it's done absolutely stunningly with the best performance i've seen from shia, the movie is emotionally visceral, and i'd say the only reason it's not hard to get through is for how well-made and gripping it is.

Lawless. I have to say Peanut Butter Falcon moved me. It’s a touching film and his performance was so genuine. You’re right he became more serious and reflective after his DUI’s and “I’m not famous anymore” phase. That was his transitional time. I think he needed to process and bring his wounds to the surface through his art in order to help heal himself and give others inspiration. Deep down he knew being a bankable superstar for Hollywood would crush his soul and he’d be too controlled, so that would’ve caused his wounds to manifest in destructive ways. He made himself transparent and vulnerable to the world almost as if he’s going through his own therapy right before the public’s eye. He’s an interesting man and super talented.
