JJ Abrams has made Star Trek movies and Star Wars movies, and yet I find his early TV work like Alias and Felicity to still be his most interesting stuff. In this video, I talk about what I wish he'd get back to.

JJ ruined Star Trek and Star War, I mean that’s kind of impressive. He has to be the most overrated director ever in Hollywood hands down
TBH I felt disappointed. I LOVED part 1. Part 2 felt rushed. Also, in part 2 I was left feeling Chalamet was wrong for the role. And the ending scene? Sorry. I left shaking my head. Maybe I had unrealistic expectations. Whatever. I was left with a sense of “Meh”.
This is mostly an extension of the "boring" tastes of people. By-the-books stories are consistently rewarded, and often showered with the largest rewards. Risk-taking is rarely rewarded, and even in the best cases often doesn't even provide the largest rewards. Those instincts (the balance of whether we can Crazy/Innovative stuff vs. Familiar/Safe stuff) are unlikely to change. So there'll always be extremely successful individuals in many genres (films, games, books, etc) who play it safe constantly, because that's just a good strategy for success in our culture.
J J Abrams turned down directing star wars multiple times. Because he didn't want to up route his kids. He could have directed all three of the sequel trilogy. From every interview I get the Impression He regrets doing it.
JJ is so derivative he takes whole scenes from other better movies, gives them a 'twist' and calls them 'homages'. They're not, they're outright plagiarism. He figured out that if you overstuff a movie with pointless action scenes, three quarters of the audience will be so stimulated, they'll gush about the movie when they first emerge, even though the movie will soon disappear from memory like yesterday's hamburger. How many iconic scenes from TFA can movie goers remember? I can't remember a thing. The JJ Abrams Star Wars scene that gets the most replay (and it isn't even from TFA), is the cringe 'they fly now' clip. He's so unoriginal he even looks like another, better director. He and his Bad Robot minions have been an absolute disaster for so many beloved franchises.
He really is one of the last great TV actors.
It was all down hill after Regarding Henry.
Still can't believe they put Mr. Road To Nowhere in charge of writing Star Wars.
Cuz the movie ducking sucked?
The channel Just Write did a really interesting video on Abrams and his trappings, and I feel like it's heavily related to a lot of what you point out-but man, hearing you point out that he's essentially never done a non-franchise film (other than Super 8) still took me out. Is there any other director with that kind of resume?
I'll say this much for The Dial Of Destiny: it's better than The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
I just got through washing Dune part two really like the first one and was bored to death in the second one even though I could say it was a good movie, but I was bored
the music playing in the background at 0:30 is the exact same tune that plays in the background of a video i shamelessly frequent on p*rnhub, i had to pause and check i didnt still have a rouge tab open LOL
The risk-avoiding nature of J.J. Abrams is exactly why the studios have kept calling him to direct blockbuster features. He stays inline and is able to apply the same boilerplate formula to any high-concept production that, in the end, guaranties delivery.
Haven't watched the video yet but...Seinfeld is, imo, the greatest sitcom ever made and since they were released I've always felt seasons 7-9 were the best. It's Seinfeld firing on all cylinders. It's wackier, quicker, wittier, and just more fun to watch. Seasons 4-6 have some of the traditional Seinfeld while introducing us to the newer style the show would soon adopt in full. Seasons 1-3 are my least favorite but it's still Seinfeld and like pizza and blow jobs even when it's bad it's still pretty good.
I wanna see None of him ever again, as a Star Trek fan, I knew he was going to screw up Star Wars, its that obvious, He should stick to his Original Ideas, which I will never watch, cause Lost is just boring to me, if you like it thats great, but dont push him on other media
I've been playing a bunch of Remedyverse games recently and it made me realize what's wrong with Abrham's mystery box stuff: He doesn't ever have a resolution in mind and can never pull one off.. but his mistake is he always *promises* a resolution. Where as Remedy's games who set up mystery boxes - they don't make them central to the primary narrative. So they can pay that narrative off and leave a lot unanswered to perhaps tie together later; as a result you never feel cheated out of a resolution. Also they seem to plan things out several years in advance, which is something Abrams is incapable of doing. The man cannot land an ending.
Abrams managed to make the resurrections of two of the most beloved franchises in cinematic history utterly forgettable. That’s really all you need to know about JJ Abrams as a director.
fringe was jar jars magnum opus. what a great show, everything else is just meh
LOST was such a letdown. I loved that show, but by Season 3 it became clear they (Abrams and Lindelof) were flying by the seat of their pants with no clear vision, and by Season 4, it was clear they just weren't going to answer basic questions because they were more interested in obfuscating. I gave up right at the start of season 5.
Some of this reminds me of John C Wright's main criticism of "Harry Potter 7" (he was generally positive): Harry takes a sojourn to the afterlife and gains no new insights from it.
He's a hack. Sure he fan take an existing frachise and put his flare on it but outside of that what does he have.
Say what you will about JJ Abrams career, it’s better than most. That’s all I’m saying.
He’s good at setting characters up and not knowing what to do with it so he leave the rest to someone else.
Because of this clown the one and only chance to have a proper episode 7 and seeing all the 3 original actor in the same scenes for the first time in 30+years got wasted and threw in to the trash Talentless fraud!
JJ is a one trick pony. And screw him for "pioneering" the over the top anamorphic lens flares, that have made a whole generation of 2D compositors and keyers miserable. All you need to know about this director is contained in the shot Ted talk he did with the mystery cardboard box. It outlines his entire philosophy. To tease for the sake of teasing, till the audience loses interest, while never revealing the secret. Simply moving on to the next idea. JJ, Nolan, Lynch are all great when you first see their works, but then you realize, that they've literally doing the same thing over and over. They suddenly become stale.
I’d put season 4 as the best
I really liked the Will Ferrell plot, I like to imagine people really were worried that Deangelo would replace Michael then to get quickly coma’d off is making me smile thinking about it
I wonder who there is in the Unkown that we havent met. Who out there have Wirt/greg not met? if anyone
J. J. Abrams is the real life Barton Fink.
I will never understand how this talent less hack got to make both Star Trek and Star Wars. And he wrecked them both.
You're never happy.
The show "Room 104" sounds a whole lot like an English show called "Inside No. 9" (highly recommend it)
"Glossy and plastic..." Yes, well put, and that's one of the reasons why Disney's shows fail, they're so far removed from any reality that there's no hook for people to get caught on. It's bland, empty calories and entirely neutered.
The whole mystery box thing is lazy since he can’t be bothered to do any work as he just sets things up and then lets other people fill in the blanks as he goes home afterwards. For as much garbage as Rian Johnson gets for The Last Jedi, I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve it, I can’t completely blame him to an extent since Abrams is responsible for having questions set up that he didn’t even answer, especially since he could have answered a few of those questions such as have Luke being in half the film and find out more precisely why he left things in the first place, which was what George Lucas intended to have happen in his outline/synopsis of Episode VII, so the Luke we then see in TLJ wouldn’t be some loser who tried to kill his own nephew and then ran away to die. Luke was a McMuffin that was forgot about half way in and then put in the the very last few minutes so that there would be a set up for the next movie. Star Wars is still 6 films as I don’t see what goes on under Disney’s ownership as Star Wars as it’s just corporate fiction since that’s what the corporation things fans want while with George Lucas, there was a story that existed and even if one isn’t fond of the execution, at least the story is good.
What I've come to realize is that I have more respect for a film like Matrix 4 than something safe and made to satisfy focus groups. Yes, Matrix 4 sucks, it's bad. But for all it's badness it does actually have an identity. It is trying to say something. It has a soul. Many of JJ's films (as well as his colleagues) as well produced and shiny as they may be are just incredibly hollow to me and I feel nothing for them.
Calling Rebel Moon a "massive swing" is a crazy reacg. It's pretty much an AI film made of a combination of other franchises and it has the same visual language and tropes as every other Snyder film?
So cloverfield don’t exist ? You goofy !
Mission impossible 3 did a lot of the franchise. It kicked it into a new era. Aside from that, he does a best-ofs approach of other directors
One of the worst things about the new trilogy is that people have started to talk fondly about the prequels.
He's a hack. He writes mystery boxes because he can't write a complete story. I will never understand why studio heads ever hired him. I hope his 15 mins are finally over.
I personally think he is a very good director, I don't get bored watching his movies, I like the rhythm he creates. He is also very good directing actors. I still think he was the right choice for Star Wars, but the writing process had to be done by different people.
So what did Abrams did with that $500 million Paramount offered him during the rise of skywaker. From what I heard he invested it to other projects not even related to paramount. Sounds very fishy.
JJ's movies range from average to slightly above average. That's it. Studios like him cause he doesn't make disasters, rise of Skywalker not standing cause no one could have made anything good following the last jedi.
Risk is failure. That's been Hollywood's attitude ever since Scott Pilgrim vs. The World flopped.
Oh we’re not gonna talk about Fringe? Really? Okaaaay… Great video. But Fringe tho!
there’s a video patrick h willems did predicting how rise of skywalker would end way back and used the felicity ending for the prediction. verbatim, it was something about how disappointing it was and that none of the payoff would be anything good and yeah! nailed it
I'm surprised Pysch ain't one of 'em since they have the movies there, eh
The Mystery Box is just a buzzword way of saying, "We haven't written the ending to this yet."
Daddy Lens Flare.
