The thing I'd like to point out is that the guy's question ("Have you gone off the rails or chosen your own direction?") is highly disrespectful and emotionally abusive, and yet this guy thinks he's being merely smart and quirky. This, I think parallels how celebrities constantly deal with a faceless crowd that feels entitled and knowledgable about celebrity lives.
LaBeouf, when first hearing the question, forces the guy to repeat himself - probably to make sure he's heard the question correctly, but also (I believe) because he senses the guy is doing some sort of power play as a way to show off to his friends later. Then, LaBeouf answers the question with 1 sentence ("A little bit of both"), refusing to indulge the guy's hope that his controversial question will launch LaBeouf into some inspiring monologue. Instead, LaBeouf answers his question point-blank and cuts off all momentum from his question.

my personal opinion is that it usually takes a traumatic event for people to be introspective. this has been my experience

I’ve loved him since even stevens. He’s super honest, and verbalizes what he feels so articulately, on top of having this, almost what feels like, relatively small view of himself. It’d be cool to sit down with him one day and just hear his inner most thoughts. I feel like his mind is always going full speed.
I've always loved him as an actor from the days to even Steven to now. Awesome
