Best Concrete Topping for Large Areas + Floor Leveling Tips

  • Topping or resurfacing large areas with trowel-applied screeds or self-leveling compounds each presents unique challenges and considerations. Understanding these differences is crucial in selecting the appropriate material for your project:
Application Method and Skill Requirement: Trowel-applied screeds are manually applied and require skilled labor for even spreading and leveling. This method often involves more precision, especially for small to medium-sized slabs, and is essential for finishing concrete with a smooth, durable surface. On the other hand, self-leveling compounds, due to their automatic leveling properties when poured, require less manual intervention, making them more suitable for DIY projects and less labor-intensive applications.
Thickness and Area Coverage: Screed is typically used in thicker layers, ranging from 15mm to 75mm, and is well-suited for larger flooring projects. It provides a strong and stable base, enhancing the durability and longevity of the final floor. Conversely, self-leveling compounds are applied in thinner layers (2mm to 15mm) and are more efficient for smaller areas or when only thin leveling is required. This makes self-leveling compounds a better choice for minor leveling adjustments or smaller projects.
Drying Time: A significant difference lies in the drying times. Screeds can take several days to dry and cure fully, which might delay the completion of a project. Self-leveling compounds, in contrast, have a much quicker drying time, often becoming hardened within a few hours. This faster curing time is advantageous in projects where rapid completion is necessary.
Ease of Use and Finish: Self-leveling compounds are easier to use, particularly as a DIY underlayment, due to their self-leveling nature which requires minimal tooling. They are also better suited for covering radiant heat tubing. However, if not finished with tools, the surface won't be as smooth and crisp as that achieved with trowel-applied screeds. Troweling, while labor-intensive, is crucial for compressing the top layer of the slab and adds strength and a durable finish to the concrete.
Cost-Effectiveness and Durability: Traditional sand and cement screed is generally a more cost-effective solution for leveling floors, especially for larger areas. It also tends to provide a more durable base compared to self-leveling compounds, which are more suited for less demanding applications.
Specific Use Cases: The choice between these two methods depends heavily on the specific requirements of your flooring project. For instance, self-leveling compounds might be preferred in scenarios where a uniform finish is needed despite varying pre-existing conditions, like in spaces with slabs of different ages and textures.

For screed, you use Level Up 403 but needs to apply first the Cement Grip in order to connect old and new flooring cement, right? But when do you use Epocoat MB and Epocoat FCH?

Gawa kayo ng self-leveling concrete na mataas ang flowability gaya ng tubig para di na kailangan ng spreader. Tawagin niyo Buildrite Level Up 301. Para sa mga small areas lang about 10 square meters or less na may hahabulin lang na konting area. Kung kaya lang naman ng mga chemists niyo. Pang foot traffic lang.

Hi, thank you for your inquiry. No, sir. New concrete will not adhere on old concrete so you need to use a bonding agent to avoid delamination.
