Attaboy!👏👏 A rasp, blade, file, saw and sandpaper is what I use. A bench vice is very handy. Failing that a lap board is a good substitute. Make some holes in a board side by side with a gap between them. Thread some paracord through the holes and over your work. Tie loops in the ends and slide them over your feet. Pulling with your feet frees up your other hand and keeps the work in place.
As a time saver I set the fork height before I skin off the bark. Plus it saves wear and tear on the blade.
I highly recommend thick gloves if you're holding the piece while using a rasp. Running it across your knuckles seriously hurts.

Its so satisfying to make something totally with your own muscle power!! and yes, the rasp hurts

@@TheSmoShow1 agreed. You can flatten the back and front using a saw to rip cut it. It's a ton of work and simply not worth it in my experience. I do rasp the back of the lower fork flat. Having a right angle gives my thumb a better grip.

What do you use for the finish? I’ve just started making my own forks and have no idea with what to use for a nice finish, thanks

Awesome brother.....I can't wait till I get myself a dremmel tool and get some oil thinking of getting linseed oil to treat my Natty's with also I been watching online a few people cap the bottom of there catty with brown colour horn cap so I thought I try to make a natty with pinch grip groves for pinch grip as that's my favourite grip and I'm gonna really sand it well going through the grits to a high grit if there's any minor splits I will address it when n if it happens with supper glues n fine saw dust or some else suggested glue and coloured chalk dust etc ? It's all new to me but I have a vision of my perfect natty catty I will band it with simple shot black .60 mm latex and I will cut taper 24/18 I can see it in my mind's eye you guys got me so hyper all I dream about is catties when I'm walking I'm keeping eye out for great forks when I'm walking I'm mooching constant ha ha what have u guys done to me man lol great sling shot awesome....stay blessed from the uk

Good job! I make my naturals just like you with simple hand tools and lots of elbow grease. I have many different rasps and files, but the one tool that I've found that makes the job a lot easier is an Iwasaki 8" half-round carving file. You can find them at highlandwoodworking.com or similar sites.
