This is really good...
However you forgot to mention the real reason why Orpheus looked back... He doubted Hades because he can no longer sense the presence of Eurydice... Hades was very dissapointed on him and made a conclusion that humans can't really trust someone...
Edit: Thanks for the likes guys. Now I know that there's a lot of version of this story and that's the beauty of it. ❤❤❤
Well that is only one story of the tale. Same goes for all other ancient Greek tales.
the version i read
they say the reason he turned around coz someone tempted him to turn around
100%. Hades related to the music Orpheus played, and was moved. Hades isn’t cruel to humans, just misunderstood as at the time it was cults that worshipped Hades.
Yeah it drove me crazy, wondering why would he turn around...
there's a lot of different versions with different reasons of him looking back, but all of them have one thing in common. he always looks back because of the love he has for Eurydice
my favorite interpretation is in the play Eurydice, where Eurydice calls out to him making him turn back because she gets scared and wants to stay
The only time Sisyphus ever had a break
Doesn't love give us a break from the endless torment of life?

Hey zeus, ever heard of tetris?
@@legendarydestructor5845 lol
after his death a cult was created in his honor , the Orphic. this cult described the events of greek mythology in poems.
some historians argue that Orpheus may have been a real person.
@Superlogos5 not just that...Orpheus s name is the first name in the collection of pre Socratic philosophers, published in Ancient Greek by German scholar Hermann Diehls who gave the quote showing Orpheus to be the son of Thracian king Oeagrus and the Muse Caliope[beautiful voice]. Pythagoras took over a good number of Orpheus s teachings. Some of these in turn were studied by Plato whose writings contain some Orpheic ideas found in Timaeus and the Myth of Er in Book 10 of the Republic. Proclus wrote On the Theology of Plato translated from the Greek by Thomas Taylor. Taylor translated the Hymns of Orpheus to which he added a Theology of Orpheus at the beginning of the book. Thracians spoke an indo European language discovered written in Greek characters in Bulgaria[the ring of Ezerovo] and on the Greek island of Samothrace[ 3 stone tablets discovered in 1994 by Claude Brixhe of the University of Nancy]. This way Orpheus was the first philosopher on the European continent and the first poet, predating Plato by 1000 years[according to Plato himself]. Orpheus in Thracian vestments very different from Greek vestments is shown on a number of Apullian ceramics and on other pieces. Orpheus is also shown singing while Thracians in their vestments listen to him. So to them at least he was singing in their own language. Thracian customs and vestments survive in Romania, Bulgaria, Thraki NE Greece and Trakya European portion of Turkey.
Wait does that mean that Orpheus was the person to ever create Emo music?
Yes.
Whoa!
Yeah like that blue haired emo protagonist

“Thou art I... And I am thou... From the sea of thy soul I cometh... I am Orpheus, master of strings...”
Persona reference, nice!

My boyfriend once thought he had found a loophole to the dilemma in which Orpheus couldn't look back to see if Eurydice was still behind him. They should have played "Marco Polo" continuously throughout the trip back to the mortal realm. Unfortunately, neither of us realized--despite being familiar with this myth that Eurydice wasn't able to speak back, so this wouldn't have worked after all. It was a cute thought though.
if he could speak he could have told her to just pat him on his back to signify they could move on and continue doing this until they got out.
I think I read a version where he called back to her but she didn’t speak, he only felt her hand, no sounds came from her, not even footsteps
I love this story.
I feel like at the end hades at some point made Orpheus his personal music guy.
well, check out the game "hades" and youll find exactly that, and a continuation of the couples love troubles
@@coryhooper8895 "Hear o' gods my desperate plea, to see my love beside me!"
Getting Spotify... with extra steps.
He actually did; I read on Wikipedia that in some of the Thracian versions of the Myth, (where Orpheus hailed from, and a civilization next to Greece), Orpheus was also a member of many of the Mystery Cults (followings dedicated to Hades, Persephone, Demeter, and maybe Dionysus, can’t remember exactly), and that combined with his trip to the Underworld allowed him to become Hades’ Court Musician after he finally died.
I could be wrong, (I know Wikipedia isn’t the best source in the world) but I still find it incredibly interesting, especially since Thrace was an entire culture and people of their own, complete with their own language and gods
(who were associated with many of the Greek Gods due to them living next to Greece).
So far, this is excellent...
The true reason Orpheus turned around, though, was left out. His inability to see Eurydice's presence had him questioning Hades' veracity. Because of his betrayal, Hades became the harsh realization that people can't fully trust one another.
A fun Fact: After they killed Orpheus, Mah boi Dionysus was enraged and instantly cursed them and turned them into trees, he too loved Orpheus music
The Greek Myth is full of treasure. Always a pleasure to hear all these stories.
So Jk Rowling got the dementor idea from Greek Mythology. And even the 3 headed dog and it going to sleep with the sound of an instrument (harp)
@kek rising yep. Just demetor to dementor.
Severus, stolen from a real Roman emporer’s name. All the spell names are corrupted Latin, making them sound familiar to English speakers.
Rick Riordan pretty much copied these stories into most of his books. Tsk tsk

why did he not just ask Eurydice if she was still behind him?
In All mythological tales and stories,
people just don't listen the instructions.
As Eurydice transitioned to the world of the living, Orpheus couldn’t sense her presence which is why he doubted and turned around.
Eurydice was not allowed to talked
@@celestialhylos7028 Oh so very true!
They were still in the Underworld......A place where the souls of the death exist. So she's basically a ghost whose presence can be neither seen nor heard by any living thing. Plus she was also not allowed to speak.....Such a bummer. 😓😔
I like how he gave a happy ending at the end even though it doesn't exist in the original mythos such a thing
Out of all the sad Greek stories I've read this one is my favorite
Maybe because it doesn't end so sadly after all. In the end, Orpheus and Eurydice were reunited forever.
The art and storytelling are amazing like usual😄
I love Hades the most..
although he is the king of Underworld, he is the one who truly were kind to all 💓🐾
Only because of Her beloved Persephone
Considering he was alright with Zeus taking the role of GOD OF EVERYTHING while he got the underworld even though it is likely he cheated, he was always kind.
@@nkyfongZuse is not the god of everything. He may rule over Olympus but he has limitations he cannot intervene in the domain of other gods.
@@nkyfong From what I heard there are some interpretations where Hades chose to rule the underworld. Which makes sense, he's the only calm and rationale one out of his brothers. Outside of Hestia, he was imprisoned in Kronos for the longest, the one most wronged by his father, the one with the greatest incentive to care about just punishment and rewards. Now he can not only be the warden of his abusers, he can make sure that everyone receives proper judgement. Bad people are punished, at least for a time, and good people get rewarded because of him and his order, and he seems to be fairly forgiving in most cases.
Even if he wasn't this is still the best outcome. Zeus and Poseidon are terrible rulers, without patience or temper, and very little empathy. They'd likely just dish out eternal punishment whenever. They treat mortals worse in a lifetime than Hades does for eternity. And Hades was given an infinite and thankless job, yet still does it well without complaint. Meanwhile Zeus and Poseidon rule over great lands with tons of followers and essentially no work and eternal time, yet still turned out to be so horrible.

This was my absolute favorite story from when i was child!
This is one of my favourite greek myths! Not only that my hometown is lying in the Rhodope mountains, the place where Orpheus was believed to be born ( according to the legend) but also the talant and the courage he possessed to go to the underworld for his lost love! 🖤🖤🖤

And then Orpheus body split open revealing the death god Thanatos to fight againts a strange shadowy creature. After that Orpheus became a servant to an emo Japanese high schoolboy, while traveling in the depth of Tartarus.
Oh wait wrong story....
Seems legit
Excellent job as always.
Hades deep down just wanted to be loved.. Zeus stole Hades's birth-right to be king of the universe and he was put into a position where no one or just a rare few would worship him.. most goddesses, mortals and nymphs fear hades because he is the personification of death, that hades has to kidnap persephone just to be his wife and the most surprising of all, Hades was actually a good loyal husband to Persephone in a time where polygamy was a norm to the gods and goddessess..
He literally reunited in Hades with her in this version, he had no reason to look back....
At least he can be with her forever now.
I named my daughter Elm because of this story ❤ the legend is that an Elm tree grew at the gateway to the underworld.. at the spot where Orpheus looked back.
I have learned so much from you! I love Greek Mythology and obviously, due to my icon pic, I LOVE Percy Jackson, even if not all the stories are correct. Thank you so much!
That’s a great pic!
I love both Greek Mythology, and the Percy Jackson universe, too; I think I must have read those books a fair few times now, and I go back at least once a year to reread them; just wish we could get a really good/faithful adaptation- either film or television would do, I’m not fussy haha.
I’d love to adapt/modernise Greek Mythology, into either a novel, or film/television script; so much so, that, when I was at uni, for my dissertation script (I studied Drama and Scriptwriting), I actually wrote the first half of a modern interpretation of Orpheus & Eurydice.
Never got round to finishing it, when I left university; I tried a couple of times, but, by that point, I disliked what I’d written before (though it got me a good mark, which was nice haha), and it would have been too much of a pain to go back through, and edit out everything I wanted to change; it would be quicker just starting from scratch haha.
Might give it another go one day. 🙂
Anyway, it’s nice to see another Percy Jackson fan in these comments; I always look out for fellow PJ fans, on videos about Greek Mythology, and it’s always nice to spot a couple of us. 😀
I hope you, and your loved ones, are keeping safe, well, and sane, during these difficult times. 🤞😀🤞
All the best. 👍😀

Champs Elysées is the French for Elysian Fields. Orpheus is credited with teaching the Eleusinian Mysteries as well as the Mysteries of the Kabeiroi on the island of Samothrace in the Aegean Sea.

The birth of Joy Division and The Smith's-
We are fortunate and forever grateful.
@Musa Ntasa these are two post punk alternative bands. They play very somber, beautiful songs. Listen to Love Will Tear us Apart by Joy Division and Mother, I know it's over by the Smith's. Then think about the unrequited love between Orpheus and Eurydice. Maybe the distance in time obnubilates the correlation.
Wasn't this posted before??
