Remarkable, and fun. And I just love your presentation style. I feel like I've been educated, but also entertained by a magician. Looking forward to the day when you hit 100k.
dude no bs i love the cheesy yet professional humor its on point :}
Ruben you rock thanks pal
Thank you for putting all of your gear with the links in the description below...It really helps.
Great video, loving the brisk pace. Straight to the point with all the details and settings included, awesome.
Brisk! Refreshing, thank-you Greg
your timing of dropping the ice cube and the triggering is AMAZING!
Too kind of you! So glad we have connected. (:
Thank you Dustin, great reminder to put the ISO higher and keep the speedlight at its lowest setting
Love this, Dustin! We are fans!
Beyond Photography Thanks guys! More great photography tutorials on the way! (-:
Dude, I love your videos! They're informative, and concise. You have a great way of explaining things and making them accessible. Great video!
Greg Cahill Informative and concise is the goal! Thanks so much (-:
wow, so much to unpack in this video. this is so awesome. really does such a great job of teaching the ins and outs of capturing such compelling images.
Thank you my friend
One of the few greatly explained workflows.
Wow thanks!
Fantastic stuff as always Workphlo, great video!
Glad we could help, thanks for tuning into workphlo.
Another EXCELLENT video! Thank you.
Thanks Bradley, photography tutorials are a passion -- glad you enjoy.
Genio! lo haces ver tan fácil que animas a hacerlo!!!!👍
Amazing video!
Super Amazing!!!
Oh bud! Thanks
Finally! A great tutorial channel that is both informative and beautifully filmed. Well done and keep up the good work. Happily subscribed.
Wow, thanks for the kind words we appreciate it! Glad you found us (-:
Great tutorial, thank you!
Thank-you Lincoln!
Excellent as always, thanks!
Cheers Alejandro, we appreciate it!
Excelente trabalho!
Cheers
Loved it. You nailed the splashes easily. Really helped to understand how you used the black sheet to reflect on the rim of the glass. I hope to see more done with just 1 light and composites, and maybe something on posing the products later on !
Hope I win those ice cubes !
Thanks Bruno! I appreciate it. I personally love 1 light composite approaches, I'll have to make something soon. Good luck on the ice!
Really really great content!
Thanks Brandon, I truly appreciate that.
Great video again Dustin. Very informative and gives me some great ideas for things to try. Would also love to see some more post processing videos.
Thanks as always Chris! We are making some fun post processing episodes that are on the way! Hope you enjoy
cool!
Thanks for letting us know what your table setup is!
Also, would love to see how you would shoot cut glass/crystal glasses. Dark field?
No problem. I will try and address that interesting field!
The best of both world reference was legit, haha! Great video.

I love it..coz im too lazy to bring heavy lights set up...♥♥♥
You are amazing
One of the best photography channels on CZcams I must say.
mp4podcastDOTcom Means a lot - Thanks! 🌟
What I like about your channel is its about education. Gear reviews are fun and I do like them. But there really are not a lot of channels like yours then teach people for free. I'm not saying selling workshops is a bad thing at all. But I think its really nice what you are doing.
Thank-you so much, I have had fun watching various CZcams channels teach photography, and sometimes it's mixed with "Entertainment" but I do prefer straight-to-the-point teaching styles!
I absoluty second that!
Super!
Wow, thanks Oleg!
It's my mostest favoritest comedian/photographer!!!!!!! wuzzup Dustin. I'll have mine 'Shaken not Stirred"!!!!
I love the energy in your response, thanks for tuning in eh :)
Wuzzup Dustin!!!!!!!!!!!! You present these tutorials in a very simple and direct way. No muss no fuss!!!! No extraneous BS!!!! And your allegories, I actually find very amusing and humorous. " My name is Dustin....so I know something about dust"!!!!! - CLASSIC!!!!! lol
Superb!! 💦 I'd been looking at including some splash work in my own shots so this was perfectly timed thank you. Your videos get better and better and you can tell your confidence and delivery improves in leaps and bounds too which is great to see. Yours is one of the only channels I always get excited about when I see a new video is up 👍👍 awesome work Dustin!
Enigma Vapes I appreciate reading your insight, you've been a loyal friend! Thanks so much
Enigma Vapes Good luck with your splash shots.
workphlo you deserve a following that sticks with you and supports your growth. You have a fresh and interesting approach, I love your condensed yet detailed explanations and it's so nice to see someone as passionate about their photography as much as I am! Let us know if there's any way we can help support your social media growth 👍👍
Enigma Vapes Wow thanks! Social shares are always appreciated! Been seeing a lot of traffic from that lately 😎🍸
Muy buen vídeo, gracias por compartir tus conocimientos, Saludos
Thank-you!
"Like Hanna Montana.... And I already regret saying that" Haha
Love your tutorials man!
Haha thanks!
I love watching your videos, so simple and effective.
How are you doing the composites on the fly so quickly? Did you do a tutorial on that?
I use floating tools to perform basic adjustments, anything mask-based I switch out in post and make notes after filming. (-:
Dude, you're amazing. Thanks so much for these videos. Please make more of them.
Can you please make a video explaining how you get to trigger both your camera and your flash? thanks much.
Have I mentioned that you're amazing?
Thanks VI. I use a wireless remote and set my Nikon D5100 to Remote-mode in the shooting menu
What great content. thoroughly enjoyed watching-subed thx
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for subscribing.
thanks for video...
Anytime
Awesome channel. Keep it up.
Thanks Ektor! Cheers dude
A good ideia would be dropping the ice cube from the opposite side of the speedlight!
Beron, that would have been great to realize at that time. haha thanks
Nice work! Did you weld the plate to the stand yourself or can I buy that on Amazon somewhere? Keep it up, love your videos.
Great
Thanks Ramina

cool video:)

You the best!
Great video! Thanks for the information. Could you please explain why you use such a high ISO setting?
High ISO allows for a lower flash setting. Lower flash powers have a briefer flash duration and freeze motion better. So that is one factor. Thank you!
Thanks for making this video. How did you prevent the glass from moving everytime you threw the ice cube into the glass? And is there a specific liquid viscosity you use?
TetsusaigaDrgn No problem, thanks! Just water here, though water+glycerin mix would work for a more viscous result. No trick to making the glass stick, though you could use tack or double sided tape!
Great video. How dark is the room where you shot the splashes?
thank you for the great tutorial bro! just one questions though, why dont you just stand on the other side of the table to drop the fake ice so you don't cast any shadow on the background?
Hi, you are awesome, very good at passing us knowledge. Thanks man, and waiting for the next video, if you like, i will be happy to see some "lego" photography, i think its a bit of challenge, but i think you can handle it. 😄😄
Hi there, thanks for checking out our lesson! Hope you enjoy future installments.
Thank you for the video! where did you get the ice cubes? I have found the cheap ones and a very expensive one
I don't have the link but these were very inexpensive ones!
I love your videos and have been learning a lot. My only question is what are you doing when you wave your remote in front of the camera before each shot?
Hi there, that is me using a Nikon Remote to trigger the camera. I do this to avoid shake.
This photo is beautiful, you have a video where you explain how to get the white background ?
hi i am using yn speeplite too.. may i know pls what remote do you use for your trigger? do you have video for that?
Hi workphlo, I was wondering what zoom setup on these Youngnuo flashes works best for this type of product shoot? Btw loved the video, keep it up!
Hiya! I often just use the widest zoom settings, all were set to 24mm here. I barely ever adjust the flash width now that I think about it, maybe I'll have to utilize that function... thanks!
Dustin, where did you get that metal plate with the TIG welded into a nut? Very cool. I couldn't find it in your list. Thanks.
I made it! If you would like to receive an update when it is available for shipping sign up below. www.subscribepage.com/workphlotable
What is it you are doing when you wave your hand in front if the camera before each shot?
I've got a question. The ice cube has to be shaking the glass a bit each time (thereby rendering the initial shots useless or at least more challenging to be layered in). Taping the glass down, perhaps?
That's a fine idea! Since the glass is cylindrical-symmetrical (does that make sense?) the minimal-shaking wasn't too big of an issue I found. Next time I'll try and post the post-production!
Can you suggest or recommend a good quality camera (specs and all that) for product photography?
The Nikon D5100 and kit lens!
*YOUR HANNAH MONTANA REFERENCE GOT YOU A LIKE* 👍
Bless!
You got great DOF with such low flash power for short duration. What was your f setting by the way?
Cheers Unal! I think f/13 which was not too bad for this splace. Sometimes they get pretty wild though, cheers mate!
I really want to thank you for this work, and I was just trying to do something about it. I have a very critical question..:) I have only one speedlight Godox V860II , is it possible good result for this splash shooting? Thans for answer...
I believe so! Godox makes great speedlights. Research the "flash duration".
What shutter speed were you using and how did you get it to work over the max shutter speed for flash?
I am using 1/200 shutter speed and low flash power which is as fast as 1/250,000 which fits inside the max shutter speed for flash sync.
Best of luck!
Great job keep it up, Do you have any compositing tutorials as well love to see them, cheers :)
Osher Ezra A great compositing tutorial coming up next! Stay tuned
whoooo hoo thanks for the quick reply appreciate :)
Is this a standard diffuser? Can i use a translucent paper or a plexiglass sheet to get the same result?
Haha the Hannah Montana line!
Haha thanks! maybe it's good I didn't edit it out, it was hard decision but I erred on the side of transparency.
workphlo that cracked me up too 😂
Yeah you did the right call to leave it in :)
Thank you for the awesome tutorials. You have great information and present it well. Have you ever considered a simple device above the martini glass with a trap door? You would set the fake ice over the trap door which slides to the left or the right and drops the ice. This would eliminate your hand shadow...but may at the same time introduce some lighting issues. Don't know.
It was just a thought I had...Thanks again for the great work.
Also, looking forward to my approval into the FB group. It's been pending for awhile. Thanks
Hey there, welcome to the group! I think that's a great idea with a mechanism to drop a splash, I've seen people do this before and it is great for consistency! Looking forward to connecting, thanks for tuning in
... or a simple clamp with a solenoid to open the clamp. Pair that with an adjustable timer circuit to trip the flash.
Fine tune the timer so the ice cube is exactly at the point where you want it when the flash goes off.
Dustin...just discovered your channel the other day. Incredible! Very impressed with your work, as well as your tutorial-technique. Well done! May I fire off a couple questions? 1) I've had my eye on a macro lens for my 5d Mark II. Based on the 9 or 10 vids I've watched so far, is that a necessary purchase? Would a 50mm lens work for this kind of photography? 2) I realize that I REALLY need to up my Photoshop game. Is the 'CreativeLive' tutorials collection something you'd recommend, or do you have other PS tutorial recommendations? Thanks so much. Keep up the great work!
Hey there Matt, thanks for watching our speedlight tutorials! 1) Macro lenses are beautiful and good glass makes great sharp photos, though it is definitely a bit of a "luxurious" purchase as 90% of the overall look ends up coming down to lighting & post. I normally shoot with my kit lens around 50mm so compression-wise I still have a ton of freedom. 2) I'd just keep shooting and practice like crazy. Here is our full playlist of episodes featuring photoshop: czcams.com/video/xbZuK9aqTL4/video.html Have a great weekend!
I really appreciate it. Thanks!
No problem man!
do you have a link for the ice cubes
hi! do you use trigger or timer?
and curious how you focus?
thanks and more power👌
I focus on a pen in the glass before hand, I show that in my recent whiskey glass video. I set the timer on my Nikon menu. Cheers!
Nice one. In your final images the background is looking more dramatic, whites and shadows. Can we keep such backgrounds for other product photography?
Absolutely
I have been trying to do splash photography in a glass but I get glare my camera reflection in the glass. How can I get rid of that?
Can you post a photo to our group? Facebook.com/groups/workphlo
hi thank you for your tutorial video.i wanna make samething photos. but i don't have camera and lens anythings.if i buy sony a7m3 it is possible?i wanna make a cosmetic product photogrphys. and use water splash together.could you recommend camera and lens?thank you.
That camera (a7m3) will serve you well, it is a lot better then the camera we use here. Go for it! A lot of this comes down to understanding light. Thanks for watching
Can you do a tutorial for capturing product photography of a can? I've been trying to do it but hard to light it up evenly. Please make a tutorial for soda/beer can photography (any metallic beverage can), thanks ♥️
Yes!
@@workphlo thank you very much 😁
Hi There, I have found your videos really helpful for my product photography work. I have one question, what is the stand that you use to place your products on while shooting? I'm struggling to find something that compact. Thanks Matt
Hi there we custom made our stand. But search for a baby-wall-plate
Can you tell me a good shutter speed for photos like yours, 1/120 is good?
It's good, I use 1/200 mainly as when you are using flash the exposure is ideally pure black before the flash is introduced. Cheers
Can you show how to shoot products with natural light?
Yes I can! Will deliver on that asap. (-:
Did you use a higher iso so you had a lower flash power = short flash duration??
YES! Exactly. I aim for 1/32 as the strongest power to still have a brief duration. So if going to 1/32 leaves me at f/11 ISO 640 1/200 that is OK vs increasing flash power and dropping ISO
Hi, I am a student and I am doing a photography assignment. I am using tv mode, as per teacher’s requirement. Can you guide me what is the recommended shuttle speed and iso etc? Thanks
Dude i cant find a corresponding Photoshop tutorial, im having a hard time with the composites and layers. do you have a editing tutorial also?
I don't, but our Facebook Group loves helping out. facebook.com/groups/workphlo
Oh and what power was your background light set to out of curiosity please?
Enigma Vapes I believe 1/64 power 📸😎
workphlo thank you 😊
Hannah Montana?? I swear you're the cutest😂
could you please explain how do you trigger the flash, could't understand. What is the shutter speed used.
I use a remote to do it... remotely! Link in description, I used 1/200th of a second. Cheers
@@workphlo thanks.
Dude when you press the remote shutter release there is a lag ! did you set any timer or something to click?
Ram Iyer I think here it's 2s, so I can anticipate the splash
Thank you what was your iso
Hi, how are you setting? NICE
Great! Thank you
Hi. not sure if your channel is still active, but I have just come across your videos and find them very informative. Thank you for that.
My question is this. How do you shoot coloured liquid in a glass (be it bottle, wine glass etc) against a black backdrop and still have the colours come through? Perhaps you have already covered this on a video that I have yet to come across,. so my apologies if the tutorial already exists. my goal. is to shoot an "appletini" really just green food colouring as you have done with this shot but on a black backdrop with the ice cube splashing
again, thanks for your video tutorials. Very informative.
Reflecting light in the back of your beverage is needed! You can get reflective cards from the art store and place them behind, cut out in the shape of your bottle!
Best,
@@workphlo Thank you. Do you have a video tutorial on this that I could watch?
Did u use high speed sync flashes to freeze the motion ?as camera limits to only 1/250 of seconds only
Very important question -- you DO NOT need HSS (High Speed Sync). When we shoot a frame at our max sync rate (1/250) the frame appears black. The freezing of the motion is only limited to the FLASH DURATION of your flash unit (lower power = briefer flash) -- your shutter speed doesn't effect the motion blur at all 1/250 will look the same as 1/100 as long as the frame is BLACK prior to introducing your artificial lighting. It sounds counter intuitive but everyone runs into this questions at some point along the journey. I hope this helps! (-:
workphlo thank u for replying sir but i tried couple of shots yesterday didnt get good result with 1/250 speed so thinking to buy hss flash and try it with 1/1000 of second to freeze it better ...what say?
you need to play with your flash power! It should be on a very low setting on your Speedlite! As Mister Workphlo said: low power = short flash duration. Also, you need to use the shutter speed that makes YOUR scene appear black without the flash, not some random shutter speed that somebody else used! Besides, if you wanted to use HSS you would most likely need to use the maximum shutter speed of 1/8000s to freeze the water like in the video and that means that you would need a Speedlite capable of HSS up to 1/8000s aswell as flash triggers with the same capability. Lastly your camera would have to be capable of shooting at that shutter speed. Low end bodies typically only go up to 1/4000s. Since you seem to already have a regular Speedlite setup why not try to go with that? I can assure you there is plenty of freezing power in a regular Speedlite at the LOWEST POWER setting! I'm sure you'll get it done ;)
highvoltagett6 thanks a lot for the info..👍
no problem! And make sure to adjust the brightness of your exposure with the ISO setting and aperture if you notice that your exposure stays too dark due to the use of very low flash power. For reference: Mister Workphlo mentioned that he was on 1600 ISO in the video to be able to use an aperture that gives reasonable DOF...
Hello! I'm using YN560IV flashes for still life, but I'm still getting some motion blur. It's set to 1/128. How do I get rid of that?
Hello Devon, what is your ambient exposure with no-flash looking like -- pure black? The motion blur could be from ambient exposure blending w/ your flash, if the ambient exposure is not black prior to adding studio light. I use 1/200s ISO 100 f/8 as a starting point!
My apologies! I should have been more specific. I'm using a 6D with 100mm macro IS . I also use a soft box with the lowest power being 1/16. The settings I usually run are 1/125, f/8-f/13 ISO 100. I use two YNIV flashes at 1/128 but still manage to get motion blur.
Hi bro, great video, always using your video for my references, may i know how many speed light do you use in this video? Thanks in advance
Thank you, and 2!
What do you think of shutterstream? I shoot a lot of product in one day and I need a quicker method
Never heard of it, what is the idea? :)
workphlo I purchased it and ended up having to get a refund......the quality of the outcome was NOT what I expected.
Hmm, good to note! I'll have to look more into what it is
Please tell me, How to doing you fixing table on the tripod?
Try searching for something called a baby wall plate
@@workphlo i found it thanks!
Nailed it...except that one drop..that was awful lol. JK. You seriously have helped/inspired me and have gave me new approaches to photography.
Once again, Keep it up!
Yes, that last one was not magic! Not too bad for eyeing it on the fly, so happy we've inspired you. Keep shootin!
Best dry delivery jokes.
My man
I might have missed it but what was his shutter speed? It must have been 1/200, no?
You got it 1/200. So the frame was entirely black without flash.
Actually, the flash is your shutter speed.
so at 8:11 how many people saw the splash look like a man jumping out the glass!!!! ( go look il wait) #creativeeye #like
Nice eye
Do have splash photogaphy online class?
why did you use dead lime))))nice video)
Haha, just as an obstacle! Best,
How, or could you re-create this with a black backdrop?
See my latest whisky tutorial, we can do a black background too
